Cannes IN or OUT: Julianna Margulies in Reed Krakoff

Posted on May 29, 2012

Julianna, you are instantly OUT for not bringing your gorgeous husband along for these pics.

Julianne Margulies attends “Cosmopolis” Premiere during the 65th Cannes Film Festival in a Reed Krakoff gown paired with Jimmy Choo sandals.

Jimmy Choo ‘Vamp’ Cross-Strap Platform Sandal

Oh, fine. We’ll be fair-minded here.

Julianna always hits the red carpet looking stylish and put-the-hell-together; usually impeccably so. But this dress must be pretty tough to pull off because Julianna’s world-class when it comes to working a frock for the cameras and this one just looks a bit sloppy and askew on her. We like the design – especially the way the contrasting strip of darker red is made to look look like it’s underneath the brighter red – but either this dress doesn’t fit her correctly or it’s just not sitting on her right. Whatever the issue, it just doesn’t look as sleek as it should. And while gold metallics paired with red dresses is all the rage right now, we don’t actually think that shade of gold in the shoe goes all that well with the tomato-ey red of the dress. Combined, it looks a bit brassy and cheap. This was a dress that called for bronzier metallics, we think. Don’t really love the tassle earrings, either.

We don’t think we’ve ever criticized any of her outfits so extensively. Oh, Julianna. Are you as sad right now as we are?

Vote Now!

IN! Oh, come on. She looks fabulous.

OUT! Hot tomato mess.

Angie Harmon’s scary Amazon look was panned by the minions, who voted it OUT.

IN. It looks exceedingly windy in those pics which would play havoc on a dress with slightly floaty tendencies. I don’t care for the earrings, but I hate tassels, whether golden or not. Shoes are OK – BUT – what really makes this  BIG OLD IN for me is that smile. That smile and general demeanor is always an IN in my book.

      • AWS

This is NOT about her smile it’s about the dress.  ~Bitter Kitten #99

        • Kathleen Tripodi

You’re not completely dressed without a smile!

IN.  The smile (and gorgeous makeup and hair) elevates it beyond the fit issues.

        • crash1212

I’m curious. Does/did Bitter Kitten #100 get a special prize?

          • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

How do we find out our Bitter Kitten Number?

            • bellafigura1

I’m just gonna take 6 if that’s ok with everyone.

    • AWS

She looks so happy.   The woman is always so put-together well, as TLo said.  It’s a bit shocking to see her in a dress which looks poorly sown.  That clippy thing should add a waist but does nothing for her figure.

      Sadly OUT

    • BazoDee

IN. First impression was good. Yes on closer inspection there are several flaws, but not enough to bump her into an out. So IN!!!

    • foodycatAlicia

In, although it would be WERQ if it hoiked her bust up an inch or so.

      • Ogden1990

I don’t know if you meant to write “hiked,” but I love the word “hoiked” – because really, when you’re talking about breasts, hoiking is the way to go. And if hoiked was intentional, nevermind.

        • foodycatAlicia

I did mean hoiked – half way between hoisted and hiked.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

OUT, so out that I laughed my way through these pictures. Out loud. Was she untangling her flaps with the extended leg?

    • amf0001

the dress – not so fab
the smile,  the real,  unbotoxed face with warmth and joy – definite in.  She actually looks like she’s enjoying herself.

    • estella_nyc

    • MilaXX

small IN. I don’t mind the earrings, but I think a different shoe was called for. Also please stop with the stop legs out posing people.

      • minnye

I think she was trying to kick the dress out from under her shoes so she wouldn’t trip?

    • Clueless_Jock

      Who is her husband?

      • Ivona Foster

HAHAHA I googled her to find out the same thing and “Juliana Margulies husband” popped up as a suggested search. It’s  Keith Lieberthal, an attorney

      • Lilithcat

You’re not the only clueless one here, Jock!  I had to research it.  He’s an attorney named Keith Lieberthal.  Pic here.

        • newleaf1

Oh yeah.  He’s as cute as she is gorgeous.

        • lordandtaylor

That is her husband. THUD. He looks like Jim Carrey on a bad day.

          • filmcricket

Oh man. That is actually not a very good picture of him (no offense, Lilithcat). His hair is terrible there. He is normally a real cutie, with gorgeous eyes.

As for JM herself, agreed with TLo on the fit, but I dig the gold accessories, they add to the disco-fabulousness of the look. And I can’t not love her anyway, she seems so awesome. In.

        • Call me Bee

Oh what a cutie!  No wonder T & L wanted to see him here on the RC with his sweety.

        • sweetestsith

I don’t love his hair there, but he looks super cute in other pictures…

        • Lisa_Cop

Yes. Julianna’s beauty and smile get this dress to a small in although it really looks like the dress has fit issues. But I apply the same reasoning is why I generally pan K Stewart; her sullen demeanor and schlumpy “I don’t care posture” ruin every dress she wears and usually an “out” vote from me.

    • WordyDoodles

IN, barely. I actually like the tassel earrings with this look. Her hair and makeup, which could have gone so wrong, are well-played. (Extra points for no opaque tomato lipstick.) And extra points for the balancing act on one foot (it’s just silly/funny to me, no matter why she’s doing it).

I’d dock a point for that bracelet because with its heaviness and shade of gold, it’s fighting with the earrings. And wouldn’t a pop of crystal clear green on her clutch have been fantastic?

    • altalinda

    • mjude

IN, love her attitude in the photos

    • kelsita421

she does look happy… but just no. OUT!

    • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

OUT.  Two different colored reds on the dress, plus the red carpet.  It’s a fashion horror movie.  But damn it if she doesn’t look happy.

    • Rachel Goldberg

You didn’t mention that the dress is too damn long.  She is stepping on it in both pictures.  Epic fail on that.

      • Jo Walker

Exactly. It also appears to be wet from where she has already stepped on it.

    • Lisa Dugan

In by a smidge for me.  She looks great and I don’t mind the shoes or the earrings although they’re not perfect.  The dress is a great idea but just not sitting right.  Still, she looks beautiful.

    • Lizzyisi

I like the dress and it suits her, although in the first picture, it certainly does look like is drooping in ways it shouldn’t. Earrings are *hideous*–they look cheap.

    • Gara St. James

Out. That weird thing with the fabric is making it look like her bosom and torso are causing the bulging, which is unattractive, and the darker red panel falling like it is make it look like they ran out of fabric. And the shoes are definitely making the overall appearance of the ensemble look cheap.

    • minnye

IN – she looks great – bust fit, shoes & earrings notwithstanding. Dress is too long but what else is new? Love the two reds on her.

    • TSkot

She’s not wearing that dress, that dress is wearing her.  OUT

    • NatalieD28

IN! I think she looks gorgeous.

    • Judy_J

OUT.  Right off the bat, I noticed the dress is too long….she’s standing on the hem in the first photo, for cryin’ out loud!  It’s bunchy at the waist, and the fit is off on the bust.  Her earrings look like drapery tassels, shoes (although frightfully expensive, I’m sure) look cheap.  Hair and makeup are messy and not flattering.  All in all, she IS one hot tomato mess.

    • Belvane

Okay, $800 for shoes that look that cheap is just…. wrong. The dress doesn’t bother me, but I do miss her curls.

    • tired_mommy

    • Yosa Addiss

Ooh, the poor hem on that dress!  She is full on stepping on a piece of it in the first photo and you can see the water or mud all over the bottom pieces in the other shots.

    • Deborah Lipp

In. It’s tasteful and striking and lovely and many, many things that other gals only dream of. I agree that the wind is playing havoc and that’s not her fault.

    • VioletFem

IN. There are issues, but overall she still loos good. Plus it looks windy.

    • prettybigkitty

Maybe she is doing the hokey pokey?
You put your left arm out
you put your left leg out
and you shake it all about.

    • AlexisPayne

Out, she’s stepping all over the hem and the bust doesn’t fit right, also hate the shoes.
      Julianna, we still love you!

    • Joyce VG

Aww she look great.  Her smile makes her glow and what else does a woman need?  IN.

    • famousamy

IN! I thought she looks great!

    • kim i

it’s too long.  she’s trying to kick it out of her way so she doesn’t step on it — as she’s doing in the first shot.

    • deathandthestrawberry

The top of her dress looks like its slipping down her body, but she looks radiant. She gets an in.

    • DCSheehan

      In. Love this on her.

    • Melanie

IN.  It’s just too long.  Looks like she’s stepping on it.  But it’s a beautiful dress and she looks great in it.

    • Nicole Merrill

OUT. She looks very wide, which I’m sure she isn’t.

    • julnyes

A flawed IN – She looks vibrant, the dress color works for her and her hair and makeup are on point. The only minuses I see are the tassel earrings and slight fit issues with the dress (which she is stepping on in EVERY PICTURE)

    • Sara__B

In, but not perfect. The first impression is a definite in, but the fit of the bodice is out. The megawatt smile and general impression of happy confidence are what I like the most.

    • Susi R

      She looks uncomfortable. OUT

    • Eclectic Mayhem

I kinda like the dress and I’m very much enjoying the fact that she’s – currently – pointing at Becks on your front page.

    • Emily

      In.  She looks awesome.

    • Dhammadina

      She still looks great. In.

    • marlie

It’s an in from me. Not my favorite of her looks, but it still works for me.

    • elleg929

OUT – it doesn’t fit her correctly.

    • Kathy Marlow

Even her smile is “this damn dress” but she looks good here. IN

    • cmb92191

She gets an in for me.   And that pic of her hubby that someone linked… reminds me of Bill Hader on SNL- might be the haircut.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

oh the dress is pretty even though its fit is somewhat off. the hair is too squashed &, for heavens sake, how not to mention why did angelina jolie teach people to stand that way? i bet she know not what she wrought. i usually dont like choo shoes [too airy] but these are okay. plus i think a lot of the problem is that she matches her background entirely too well.

still, have seen much much worse so put me down on her good side.

    • Le_Sigh

In with quibbles.  Though, if she had brought her husbandry eye-candy, my quibbles would have been in smaller font :-)

    • lordandtaylor

Would someone please get that string of hair of her forehead. She is looking a bit unibrow. Where are her people…her handlers? Dress is hot especially with the color panel on one side.

    • drdirection

That mid-forty year old face is beautiful!!

    • jacklaudia

Clearly this is an IN. It’s not on the same block as a WERQ, but it’s at least in a nearby zipcode.

    • Jangle57

I think it’s too long – it looks like she’s stepping on it in the first shot and the bust does look a little sloppy, but no way does it deserve to be in the same remedial  class as say the Angie Harmon house of horrors – IN

    • Sara Munoz

I tried, but I am just not liking this. OUT.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Dress is too long – she’s standing on it, for pete’s sake.  Hate the shoes with that dress.  The dress just doesn’t seem to fit her correctly.  AND, she’s shiny and needs a blotting tissue.  So, yeah, OUT.

    • suzq

It’s a fine dress…provided she doesn’t invoke the Angelina Jolie leg pose.

    • MsKitty

That dress does absolutely nothing for her and it’s a miracle she didn’t trip over that hem which is way too long. OUT.

    • Call me Bee

It looks as thought this bunch of photos caught her struggling to rein in her skirt during a particularly breezy RC.  It’s a cute dress and the color is gorgeous on her, but you are so correct about the shoes.  (I am so over the platform sandals that everyone has been wearing for a year…)  They are clunky and cheap looking.  Love her little bag, though, and her hair and make-up make her look happy and relaxed.  So…IN

    • IraKi

IN because she looks so confident and put together that she makes me not care about the details!

    • Cathy S

She’s so beautiful I hate to give her an Out but I’m going to. The dress looks all twisted. Is it windy there? She’s got a hair across her forehead and she seems to be fighting with her dress. But she’s happy and gorgeous anyway.

    • joything

Whoever said “get that string of hair off her forehead,” thank you.  I wondered if she was wearing some kind of skin-smoothing forehead patch, and there’s a line at the side of her face that seems to demark a border between the smooth front of her cheek and the more, um, textured region near her ear.

I wouldn’t put it past the showbiz beauty geniuses to come up with something like that.

      • Anabag

I keep thinking she’s wearing a huge band-aid on her forehead.

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

IN. Not a huge screaming in, and yes, maybe my affection for her is coloring my perception, but I think she looks good.

    • LongTall_Sally

IN!  The dress isn’t perfect but she looks so happy and confident that I’m finding it easy to overlook the flaws.

    • Judy_S

I think she probably looked IN just before she stepped outside, but I detect not only wind in her hair and skirt but also dampness at the lower edges of the gown. So I give her an IN for smiling and looking pretty great despite the weather.

    • joe_tey83

The tassel earrings look like a joke.

    • Bethany Roullett

IN! Oh, come on. She looks fabulous.  Pretty much sums it up for me.

    • MandyJane

In, could be a bit better but not much. I adore her.

    • enid soto

In, the dress is chic though a bit too long, and plus it looks like it was really windy. I don’t mind the accessories because they don’t detract from the dress.

    • Allison Woods

      Too sloppy. Out.

    • CassieLee22

sadly OUT, i love the idea of it, just not the actual execution

    • CQAussie

Is she posing in wind tunnel?  She’s looks a second away from being blown away…
But IN though.  I love this dress on her – even though the shoes grieve me.

    • MissAnnieRN

In. I like the dress. Out for the shoes with that dress. Cathy Cambridge made them look expensive, they are looking Payless here.

    • momogus

Totally IN. She looks gorgeous and happy. You go, girl!

    • golspie

What? Does she have some flash-coloured tape stuck across her forehead? I don’t get it. It’s extremely visible in pictures two, three and five. I can’t be the only one who sees it surely?

      • Lina_bee

That would be a few strands of windswept hair that seem to be stuck to her face.

        • golspie

I thought so at first but it runs suspiciously straight across her brow and there’s another line an inch above it running in parallel.

          • PeaceBang

            I’m confused by that too.

    • saanrio

IN, though not without a bit of reservation.  I don’t have any issue with the hair, makeup, or the earrings, and I think the tone of the shoes was fine with the dress, I don’t get tacky r cheap at all from it.  The reservation comes in the cut of the dress, and whether this could really fit right on anyone without the benefit of pinning.  I blame the design of the dress more than anything, and I honestly wish the little clasp holding the bright red together on the side had been gold, too…

    • ankali

OUT for the fit in the bodice, especially the way it sags around the darker red. If that were fixed, this would be an IN; I see TLo’s point about the color of the shoe, but that doesn’t bother me enough to think it brings the outfit down.

    • GTrain

    • lesmaha

IN–I think the wind is more the problem than the dress.  She always looks so great.

    • amian3

IN Fabulous all around (except maybe a little too long in the hem and boring platform). But In. Love those tassels, makeup and her face.

    • Lina_bee

SIGH. I love this in theory but the execution has SO MANY PROBLEMS. IN for the awesome INTENT! OUT for the disappointing OUTCOME.

    • Martha Jackson Deutsch

IN. Happy and confident. It may not be perfect, but she looks good.

    • Thom

I’ll call it a tentative IN: Yes, the dress seems an odd fit, what with the garter hook cinching the waist and exacerbating any gaposis in an unintentional way, and yes, I dislike the pale gold sandals (and that they match the clutch), but it’s a striking look on her, at first glance. I like the jewelry, and her hair and make-up look good. Plus, she looks laughably goofy in these pictures, like she had one extra martini at lunch.

    • marilyn

I am on the fence about this one.  I think that dress would look better in motion, than standing still.  It is an interesting use of color and draping.  I don’t care about the accessories because they don’t fight the dress.  I am going to give her the benefit of the doubt and say IN.

    • Lauren

IN, but barely because though I love her to death, you should NOT be trampling over your hem.

I want to reach through my monitor and back in time so that I can pull away the flyaway hair that is stuck above her eyes and below her forehead.

    • kirkyo

      She looks positively radiant here.

    • Valerie Jones

IN. Attitude and great face wins over flaws.

    • TheOriginalLulu

I think she looks gorgeous. I do agree that a bronze metallic shoe would have been better, though.

    • Snailstsichr

I agree with many posters that it isn’t bad enough to be an out, so IN from me. I think it is a shame they didn’t hem the dress before lending it to her. (If that is what happened.)

    • Jessica Goldstein

I love the shoes! But taste is subjective. Dress might be a bit askew, but she looks fabulous, together, and classy as ever. IN.

    • LittleKarnak

I gotta go Out here…just a mess compared to her usual level of fab.

    • Lisa_Cop

    • Eva_baby

IN.  Really liking this on her.

    • littlemac8

IN  I don’t love tassels in general but they show up so beautifully in contrast to her hair, I’m sold.  I love earlier poster’s idea that it was windy and any awkwardness in the dress is not her fault but I must say I I’m now convinced strapless dresses are REALLY hard to wear.

    • mom2ab

In.  She looks beautiful and real and just right for Cannes.

    • sleepycat

It looks sloppy, although the design of the dress is nice, OUT

    • PeaceBang

IN. Because I have the feeling that everything would be more polished if she wasn’t trying to stay standing in the midst of a major weather event.

    • Warrior89

She’s in.  And can I just say, yay for having crows feet.  She is beautiful and REAL looking.

    • RedRaven617

    • butterflysunita

      So, so IN.

    • guest2visits

      I actually love this whole thing; tassels and all.  It fits her so well I can forgive that it’s another strapless gown;
      — just waiting to be hiked up.

    • TieDye64

Ack, that dress is NOT good. Neither are any of the accessories. The smile is gorgeous and it’s so nice to see that her face actually moves. Refreshing. Still, it’s an OUT.

    • trisker

“IN!  Oh come on, she looks FABULOUS!”

    • Sophie Collier

Maybe the problem is she appears to be spinning around for the photogs and the dress isn’t getting a chance to hang right.  Glad to see she’s having a lot of fun, but girl needs to calm down a bit so’s the cameras can catch a decent shot.

    • Eovaai

OUT. It’s too long for her and she’s stepping on it.

    • phrenk

      IN, she looks amazing!

    • MzzPants

She’s peeing on a hydrant.  And while she may be feeling real joy, the look is mediocre compared to the competition.  OUT.

    • PaulaBerman

Can I ask what is going on with her forehead? On my screen, it looks like she has a flesh-colored bandage on it.

    • JaneDC

Is it the light or does she have something on her forehead?

    • Fatima Siddique

In. She looks gorgeous. I blame the high winds for messing with the dress.

    • blondie65

In…just for all her smiles alone. But seriously…great color, fit is ok, gorgeous shoes. In.

    • Laura

Except for the hair, IN. And I blame the hair on the wind. Mostly.  I think she looks fab. Love the dress and the shoes.

    • Louise Bryan

IN  I think she looks great, in spite of what appears to be gale force winds.  Gotta love that smile!

    • amye

Oh, no.  This is an IN.  I think it looks sloppy, because it appears it was windy.  This is definitely her dress, her makeup is fabulous, and she looks free & happy.

    • DaveUWSNYC

It’s possible to be happy and OUT at the same time. I do it every day.

    • jw_ny

She sure seems to be struggling with the length…stepping on the hem and having to kick it away,  The fit in the bust is unflattering to her boobs.  Love her attitude here though, and the color looks great on her.

    • Sunny White

Out, because the first thing I noticed as my eyes traveled down was that she’s stepping on the hem!  Plus, the bust seems oddly fitted and sloppy.

    • NurseEllen

In, in, in.  I think she looks great despite a few cavils about fit.

    • Fifi LaRoux

I am going to say in, because I think it looks like it was windy and therefore causing her some trouble.

    • aristida_girl

In for me, I think her outfit is great, and have mega lust for those shoes…I do agree the fit in the bust is a bit off though

    • Heather

It’s not the greatest look for her ever, but I’m still giving her an IN. She’s totally classy, her hooch isn’t showing, she’s age-appropriate, she doesn’t have ratty extensions, and she looks genuinely glad to be there. Give her a pass. I am worried she’ll trip, though.

    • Jessica O’Connell

I don’t love the earrings but all-in-all I think she looks great. Gets an IN from me!

    • Julie Chase

I love her and her face and her pretty husband and the colors of this dress, but the style and the earrings make me angry. Out.

    • nancylee61

I think she looks fabulous and like she is having a great time!! In!!

    • demidaemon

      OUT. Looks awful.

    • demidaemon

      OUT. Looks awful.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

      IN.  she’s IN.

    • Shawn EH

Out! Kind of a mess. She should try to find her softer side.

    • oohsparkley!

    • glennethph

    • quiltrx

OUT…because I hate tomato red (instant zombie corpse look on me), AND she’s standing on her dress.

Not a lot of effort on the hair, but I actually don’t mind the tassel earrings.

    • bellafigura1

Wow, tough crowd on this one. Major IN. I think her overall look is stunning, including the dress, but agree it could be better fitted in the bust, and two inches shorter.  The earrings are divine — playful, luxe and the right “amount” of bling for the two-toned red and the gold JCs.  And props on the nude clutch.
