Andrew Garfield for VMAN Magazine

Posted on May 10, 2012

Here’s your prettyboy for the day. And while Andrew Garfield has a face made to be photographed, he suffers from that malady all boystars do when forced to wear expensive clothes and stare into a lens:

The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield is featured in the Summer 2012 issue of VMAN magazine photographed by Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin and styled by Nicola Formichetti.

Coat, waistcoat and shirt by Prada. Bow tie by Giorgio Armani.

T-shirt by Giorgio Armani.

All clothing by Gucci.

T-shirt and pants by Giorgio Armani.

Shirt by Prada.

His face has frozen into one facial expression. This may be the worst of the guyditorial thousand-yard-stares we’ve seen in some time. The clothes look great and he looks great, but when you scroll through them all at once, it’s hard not to get the impression that he’s wearing a mask or that they simply pasted the same face over and over again on some other model. Andrew, you’re an actor. Act like you’re a model. It’s not hard.

In other Andrew Garfield news, we saw the trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man movie when we went to see The Avengers (which was 2+ hours of fun awesomeness, by the way) and we have to say, we’re completely underwhelmed by him. Tom’s as geeky as geeky gets, but he turned to Lo after the trailer and said, “That does nothing toward making me want to see it.” If you can’t get a geek excited about your Spider-Man movie, you might be in trouble. He just comes off so smarmy and full of himself.

But he does have some amazing hair, that can’t be denied.

He has the kind of face that ages well. He’ll look devastating in twenty years.

    • formerlyAnon

Yes. Time will take the edge off of the pretty.

    • Amy Ellinger

Young Pierce Brosnan, was my first thought.

    • TheOriginalLulu

Agreed. A few lines around the eyes and some silver in the hair will work wonders for him. Like Clooney. A thousand times better looking as a mature man than he was when he was young.

  • Sobaika Mirza

He doesn’t do a single thing for me.

I have no interest in watching another Spider-Man (out of ALL the franchises to reboot are they really just microwaving Tobey McGuire’s and serving it up again?) and the trailer inspires nothing. I’ll hold off until the movie actually comes out, but I may have a male on my Irrational Celebrity Hate List. He has a quality that makes me want to punch him in the face.

    • Donna Lee

For real.  I had no opinion of him in Tron but now he’s starting to make me feel facepunchy in that “the hand wants what the hand wants” kind of way.  And I love Spider-Man.  But not this Spider-Man.

      • khossyouguys

In Tron?  Andrew Garfield wasn’t in Tron… (That was Garrett Hedlund.)

I dunno, I always liked reading Spider-Man (particularly their Ultimate reboot) as snarky and painfully teenaged – so I hope that that’s where this reboot goes (rather than super douchebag).

        • Donna Lee

hahaha oops then apparently I had zero opinion of Andrew Garfield ever before this

    • Gabriella M

Wish they’d do a reboot of X-Men. I want to see Zoe Saldana as Storm. Then she can be crowned new Geek Queen.

      • Sobaika Mirza

Isn’t she already crowned Geek Queen, with Star Trek?

I really liked the X-Men First Class with Fassbender. Maybe she could be a young Storm in a sequel to that.

        • Gabriella M

lol that’s what I mean. Star Trek + X Men => Geek Queen.
I wasn’t sure if First Class was a reboot or just a prequel to the originals.

          • Sobaika Mirza

I think it was prequel. I think they are planning on doing another though? I heard some scuttlebutt about Jennifer Lawrence having to work it out with her Hunger Games schedule.

        • LesYeuxHiboux

That’s an outstanding idea. She has the Amazonian build and fierceness to do Storm justice (sorry Halle).

          • Adriana_Paula

Halle Berry being cast as Storm was one of the great movie travesties of the aughts.  I always thought, had she been younger, it shouldabin Iman.  But Zoe Saldana would do nicely.

    • Jane Patterson

They’re rebooting because Sony has to give the rights back to Marvel unless they keeping making Spiderman movies. Which sucks. So not going to bother….

      • Sobaika

That’s an even shittier reason to reboot than I thought possible.

    • Glammie

Yeah, I feel like we barely finished off the last round.  I mean, when the stars of the last series are only in their early 30s, it’s too soon.

    • skadi1

backpfeifengesicht! german for a face that needs to be slapped. such a useful concept.

  • SpcilK

Oh My Goodness, his mouth is hypnotizing and I’m under it’s spell!

    • Kiltdntiltd

I know! Those lips are crying out “kiss me NOW!”

      • terpsichory

         You just made me blush.

        • Kiltdntiltd

Anytime I can be of assistance in such matters, you need only ask. (smile)

          • terpsichory

Why, Mr. K! Be assured, I will remember an offer as promising as this.  *2’~)
            (yes, that’s my fabulous hat)

          • Kiltdntiltd

            Fabulous indeed!

    • That Was Not Very Raven of You

I could not agree with you more. He is gorgeous to a point that is actually unfair.

  • ecallaw

He does nothing for me, but he has to be an improvement over Tobey McGuire.  In my opinion, Tobey and Kirsten were perhaps some of the worst miscasting in history.

    • AnaRoW

I agree with you about Kirsten but Tobey was perfect, IMO.  Either way, it seems too soon to be rebooting the Spider-man franchise.

      • Gabriella M

Ugh I thought Tobey was awful – more “wuss” than “nerd” for Parker’s personality.

        • Roosevelt 85

I’m sorry. Peter Parker is a morally conflicted nerd mourning the death of his uncle. He is NOT a hipster douche.

          • Gabriella M

Didn’t say he was a hipster, said he was a nerd. As for douche, well, it depends on how you take his pithy one liners, which have been there from the start. What I gathered from the trailer is more of a return to the early Spiderman stuff where Peter comes across as way more of a social outcast nerd and occasional jerk, which I’m fine with. I didn’t really get bro, but that’s me.

          • girliecue

Speaking of douches, Andrew Garfield looks a little too much like David Copperfield in these pics for my taste. But the hair IS gorgeous.

    • H3ff

It should have been Ryan Reynolds!! He has just the wit Peter Parker needed.

  • Eric Scheirer Stott

I had amazing hair at that age….it’s leaving me now.

    • formerlyAnon

I admire the tone of wistful acceptance that statement achieves.

  • LeBarron

I remember watching him in The Social Network and thinking, “That is one handsome man.”  But even that’s not making me want to go see The Amazing Spider-Man.

    • Deitra S.

It’s the same for me!  I loved him in that.  There was a fragility and humanity that he seems to have lost in record time; or at least smothered in a cascade of Eau Du Douchebag.

      • Qitkat

When he played Frank in Doctor Who five years ago, he had that fragility and humanity quality also. That was the first time I ever saw him. I was amazed when he showed up in The Social Network, and I kept thinking to myself, I know that guy, who is he? I’m not thrilled to see him in this spread with the overblown hair, but I think he’s a very talented actor.

        • Marcie Dreyfuss

I fancied him insanely in Lions for Lambs. Nothing after that, unfortunately.

      • WordyDoodles

Oh, it was exactly that quality of fragility and humanity that I loved in him in “Never Let Me Go.” I didn’t bother to keep up after seeing him in that though, so didn’t know he’d lost it. :/

        • Deitra S.

Ugh, I missed that one & REALLY want to see it!  It looks so good!  But yes, one look at the new Spider Man trailers, and it was such a turn off.  *Blech*

          • WordyDoodles

            The last shot of him
in Never Let Me Go just destroyed me. I was done for the night. And I thought he was great in The Social Network. I can’t
even comprehend him as a douchebag. My brain isn’t registering these photos or Spiderman.bleeaaahhhhh

          • That Was Not Very Raven of You

I don’t think he looks like a douche as Peter. I think he’s just playing a teenager and he’s acting like a teenager. I mean who likes teenagers?

          • WordyDoodles

Good point! And I would just like to note how much I love your screenname. :)

  • Eclectic Mayhem

With you on how much fun The Avengers was and on how I can’t be arsed to see the Spiderman reboot.

I want to know what that sound is on the Prometheus trailer and who came up with it?  It’s haunting and beautiful and scary and it REALLY makes me want to see the film despite the fact that I know I’m far too squeamish to deal with it!

  • altalinda

“Smarmy and full of himself.”  Essactly.

  • Rain Jezek

I read that as “But he does have some amazing hair, that can’t be dented.”

    • AthenaJ

With all the product in it, I doubt that hair would move in a hurricane.

    • newleaf1

That hair is just way too Jerry Lee Lewis for me.  I expect him to start pounding on a piano.

      • Spicytomato1

I know, it’s awful. I usually think he’s adorable but the hair in these shots is killing me. It needs either a) messing up or b) buzzing off.

  • RebeccaKW

I do like the next to last shot, in the sleeveless black Armani.  Probably b/c he’s looking down and I don’t see that same expression.

I, too, am not excited about the new Spiderman, and I love Spiderman and Emma Stone.

  • UrsNY

Even though I heart-like-crazy geekyboys, I do not understand the appeal of this guy. He leaves me cold. Maybe it’s that he comes off as calculating, or too conventional?

[geek-ese] Also, the characterization of Spiderman in that trailer was ASS. The mugging clip makes PParker seem like a jock dudebro, which is the opposite of the point of the character (so I’ve always assumed). [/geek-ese]

  • Sara LaBatt

The clothes are nice, as are the arms.  I think when he is looking away from the camera (pictures 3, 6, & 7) he actually has a pretty effective model-like face on.   But when he’s looking at the camera I’m not buying it.

  • UrsNY

(oops! threadfail. this is for Eclectic Mayhem) I agree with you on each of these. So looking forward to Prometheus. That crazy music in the trailer sold me.

    • Eclectic Mayhem

      *waves* hello!

If I do have the balls to actually go see Prometheus in the cinema I just know I’ll be sat hunched in a tight little ball and end up seeing most (or rather less of it!) of it through my fingers.

  • kat89

I’m a middle aged fangurl(and even older than Tom, thankyouverymuch) and I totally agree on both counts. The Avengers movie was AWESOME and Spiderman totally underwhelms me. Batman might be one to watch though….

    • Eclectic Mayhem

I suspect Nolan/Bale’s third and last Batman outing will pulverize all the records that The Avengers just smashed.

For my own part, much as I’ve enjoyed the Nolan Batman there’s something fabulous about what Marvel has pulled off with Iron Man, Iron Man 2, The Hulk, Thor & Captain America all leading up to The Avengers.

Joss Whedon is a bloody genius!  It could so easily have gone wrong; eight lead characters (NINE if you count ‘the other guy’) plus Coulson and Hill in support – how are you supposed to manage everyone’s screen time let alone each individual story arc?  But he did it and it’s not just ‘good’, it is GREAT!

      • MilaXX

Agreed. I now geek out waiting in anticipation for the last few mins of the Marvel stories just to see what the latest sneak peek will be.

  • Judy_S

Reminds me a little bit of George Hamilton. Apparently he’s a good stage actor, though.

  • Athena Bast

I am more underwhelmed by The Dark Knight Rises than I am for Spider-Man.

  • MilaXX

Worse case of one-itus I’ve seen in a long time. Shame cause i think he’s pretty.

  • TieDye64

  • Judy_J

    He DOES have amazing hair.

  • KaileeM

Oh, that’s a shame about the Spider-Man trailer. I thought he was so great in The Social Network. He’s extremely photogenic, but definitely not a model!

  • Karen Stephens Bassett

  • formerlyAnon

    Too pretty.

  • hughman

If only this Garfield was as interesting as his feline counterpart we’d be in business.

    • Sara Munoz

This is Andrew’s “I hate Mondays” face.

  • Gabriella M

I dunno, Peter Parker in the comics often comes off as smarmy and full of himself. Seemed about right to me. Also, Garfield can pull off the pencil-necked geek better than McGuire ever could, in my opinion.

  • Sara Munoz

    He is pretty. Pretty vacant.

  • Jessica O’Connell

“Andrew, you’re an actor. Act like you’re a model. It’s not hard.” Awesome.

  • ZnSD

If you think he’s got nice hair, you should see mine, darlings.

  • bellafigura1

He looks exhausted, bored, bony and condescending to me. All the time.  A little joie de vivre + humility (well-played or authentic), kid, goes a very long way.  Take notes from Clooney, RDJ, Springsteen, etc etc.  Even RPatz knows how to shuffle and shuck when he has to …

  • Lorena

This is the best he’s looked…ever. He actual looks like a full faced man, not a thin little boy, as he looks in most films and photos. Anyone buying that ‘relationship’ with Emma Stone? I sooooooooo am not.

    • That Was Not Very Raven of You

He and Emma are definitely a thing. They have been spotted holding hands, kissing, etc every day for six months and they live together.
If that’s a fake relationship they are on some Seal-Team-6-style deep cover.

  • turtleemily

These just make me want to see him in a movie where he’s ZQ’s younger brother.

  • HeyMrPhipps

I’d hit that all kinds of ways and pre-order a ticket if I could. I just thought I’d throw that out there to buffer some of that hate. Sheesh, girls. Unclench a little.

  • Dr Skylaser

No, there’s nothing that makes me want to see that Spider-Man.  You know what would, though? Donald Glover instead of Andrew Garfield.  THAT, I’d get excited about.

    • Dejah Thoris

Spider-man and Abed in the mooorrrrnin’!

  • Dejah Thoris

That’s distressing to hear. I was kind of looking forward to seeing how he was in it.

Hey, why aren’t you guys doing movie reviews? I would LOVE to hear what you have to say about The Avengers, and a million other movies as well. I’m such a nug when it comes to appreciating nuance, but I love learning about it from your perspective and then going back and appreciating the show with that perspective.

Please do movie reviews, please?!!? Especially, SCI-FI movies. Prometheus is coming soon as well, and the metric ton of pretty in that movie is NOT for the faint of heart.Video blog or podcast would be the cat’s prada pajamas!

  • Roman000

Don’t blame Andrew, blame I & V for their stale photography (Seriously what happened to them, they used to be so good, now it’s the same B&W stale lifeless bullcrap).

  • Athena

I’ve seen and liked AG in the things he’s done. He is very pretty and a decent actor to boot, but these photos are really really boring. He’s partly to blame, but yeah, the editorial team needs to take some of it too. Still, act like a model is always good advice for these things haha.

  • AnaRoW

Honestly, I think these actors ARE acting like models. Or at least they’re doing what they think models do, which is nothing.

  • skadi1

I do not like him. He really rubs me the wrong way. Pretty hair or no, a douche is a douche.
More upsetting, though, is that my opening weekend showing of Avengers did not have the Spider-Man preview. Guess I’ll go see it again. OH DARN! :)

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

he was heartbreaking in one of my favorite movies (based on one of my favorite books), ‘never let me go’.

  • Pamela

His hair is no better than the mane Hugh Grant sported when he was thrust into the spotlight.  “Four Weddings & A Funeral”, anyone?  Love to run my fingers through THAT head of hair!

  • guest2visits

I’m liking that third photo with the Armani bow-tie… because his wonderful head of hair seems less poofy. He’s looking
like a thoughtful young man; less boyish.  Of course it’s not his fault he appears so young, he just is.

  • snarkykitten

Tobey Maguire came off as smarmy & full of himself, too, imho

oh sorry we’re supposed to be talking about the photos.

  • jeeplibby02

    Looks bored.

  • Ajuna Ariel Fenty

Do Inez and Vinoodh ever change the premise of their photo shoots? it’s the same thing over and over again *yawn* I’m not a fan of Garfield but he is a good actor and that’s what matters so yeah.

  • Vera

The Spider-man trailer did nothing for me either. Gosh, what beautiful hair.

  • ccm800

the casting in the Spidey reboot is just awful.

  • Amy Ennis

This is the first time I’ve ever thought he was mildly attractive. Mildly.

  • RzYoung

I got that impression from the spiderman advert too, also I think I’ve got Spider fatigue – where does this new film pick up? Or does it all start over again? or is it a prequel or sequel?! Can’t be bothered with it. Avengers was so great though!

  • Verascity

I’m sorry, I started laughing. He’s very pretty, but that frozen stare got to me.

  • mrspotts66

in the photos of him NOT looking at the camera, he looks amazing!

  • TheOriginalLulu

Shame about the one facial expression, but man is he a cutie. For some reason, I thought he was the super-skinny type, but he’s got himself some nice arms. The hair and eyebrows are ridiculous on this kid.

About the Spider-man movie, your news makes me sad. I’m not very geeky, but I’ll admit I completely geeked out when the Spider-man movies with Maguire came out. So much fun! I was really looking forward to this new one.

  • John Watson

Andrew Garfield won me over in The Social Network. And in Never let me go. And in the Imaginarium of doctor Parnassus. And in the series Red Riding even which was kind of confusing and ridiculous on so many levels.
And then i made a vow to stop watching his movies because they always make me cry. haha

But seriously, i love him and im stoked to see him as spiderman. Me and all my geeky friends have certainly gotten excited about the movie and about him as Peter, the trailer got me legit excited opposed to just being excited that he was going to be in it. I think it looks amazing.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

Blimey – yes!  Fabulous, thanks for posting.  How cool is that, I wonder how the sound was created.

  • quiltrx

He has such a great face…too bad he’s not using any of its muscles here!  He looks like Jeff Gordon’s bored little brother in these pictures. (and from me, that is really damning!)

  • fursa_saida

Shockingly, despite the fact that he looks like a mouthbreathing simpleton here, I also find him really hot in this editorial. Normally those two things don’t go together for me.

  • Lilyana_F

Awww, man, I’ve loved this guy ever since “Boy A”, so talented and looks so dashing here

  • That Was Not Very Raven of You

He is obscenely, absurdly beautiful. Y’all crazy.

On another note, it’s about time he picked up that Prada from the cleaners.

  • That Was Not Very Raven of You

AGREED. He is an incredible actor and I can’t wait to see all the work ahead for him (including Spider-Man).

  • T G

I’m not at all interested in Spiderman because I never have been but I saw him on Broadway as Biff and he was freaking fabulous.

  • Utpd

Sorry, but He is a mediocre actor and his face is so irritating.

  • Brian Adams

He looks like a young Jeff Gordon.  I know, I am a redneck.  Still looks like him….
