Zooey Deschanel for Marie Claire

Posted on April 10, 2012

Zooey is looking more and more like a painting of a big-eyed ragamuffin on black velvet.

Zooey Deschanel featured in the May 2012 issue of Marie Claire magazine photographed by Tesh.

If they poof up the back of her hair a bit more and slap on a little more makeup to make her eyes look even bigger, they might be able to get her down to about toddler age.

Aw, we joke because we (sort of) love. It’s her look. If you’ve got Zooey, some free clothes, and a camera, you’d be crazy not to work that big-eyed mod look she embodies so well. These pictures are great, she looks cute, and the clothes are chic.

But stylists, isn’t it time to try something else with her? The sixties-esque Manic Pixie Dream Girl looks are getting a little stale at this point. Let’s see her done up all edgy-like. Or at least pick another decade from which to draw inspiration. Big-eyed women existed in the ’50s too, you know. Even the ’70s and ’80s. It’s true. We read it on Wikipedia.

Didn’t Taylor Swift wear that same Gucci dress for one of her magazine photo spreads?  It is a pretty killer dress, though.  I can see why multiple stars would want to rock it.

  • quiltrx

Love both dresses!  She looks great, but I agree there are totally different ways to style her for some variety.

  • http://twitter.com/arodenha Alli

I would love to see her done up like a 70’s rocker gf – think Penny Lane instead of the air hostess sister she played.

    • lundibleu

That could be interesting. I’ve often thought that either Zooey or Emily would really suit some of the 20s or 30s styles too… can imagine either of them looking fantastic in some vintage Schiaparelli or Vionnet.

    • TieDye64

Yes, I was thinking something very similar!

  • crash1212

Love her in that Herve Legere and the fact that we can actually recognize her on the cover is a big step forward in photo/non photo shop!

  • nannypoo

No No No! Don’t change a thing!!! She is adorable. And she looks fabulous in these clothes.

  • http://www.facebook.com/charlotte.horseman Charlotte Horseman

That ain’t no plus size model wearing those Gucci pants and yet – she looks HUGE???   How the hell is that possible?

    • Anathema_Device

That picture proves that pleated, shiny, tapered pants are the work of the devil.

      • kimmeister

The boxy jacket on top ain’t helping either.

  • Paigealicious

  • janetjb

    Zooey wears everything very well.

The model wearing the green Gucci jacket looks so blocky, not a flattering look for mere mortals.

    • Pants_are_a_must

Emma Stone wore this look, I think. I remember T&Lo loving it, and the majority of the bitter kittens going “….why?”

      • sweetestsith

I remember it looking much much better on Emma than it does on that poor model. Love the color either way…

  • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

I think she looks better than the model in everything. Brava!

  • UrsNY

She gives me a headache. Twee gives me a headache. The edgiest thing she could do at the moment is act like an adult. I am so beyond tired at grown women aping child-like postures.

    • luciaphile

That’s her schtick. I don’t think she or the people who handle her realize that the shelf-life on that is very very limited. She’d be better served trying to vary up her look. You can only be a manic pixie dream girl for so long.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_64HSRZWCSJ5RBFGCWDLFQOICYM G

She is dreamy looking and would have made a beautiful Snow White.

  • Pants_are_a_must

What’s with the weird overly blue saturation? Someone went a little nuts with photoshop.

    • Jessica Wyatt

       right? very “Dune”.

  • Anathema_Device

Oh, I don’t mind her schtick. I think she looks great here. I do wonder, though, how or whether her style will change as she ages.

    • norseofcourse

I predict she’ll be like Diane Keaton – finding a signature style at a young age and gradually growing into a more sophisticated/less costumey version of it. Diane will always have her hats, and Zoe’s tights are here to stay.

      • mountainFashionista

I saw Diane Keaton in a L’Oreal haircolor ad the other day, and she was so surgeried/Photoshopped/blonde that I wouldn’t have recognized her if they hadn’t put her name next to her face.

  • BrooklynBomber

My god, I felt absolute revulsion seeing the picture of the Gucci outfit on the model. How strange to have such a reaction.  I’ll admit that Zoey, who’s on my irrational hate list, looks good. But on the model the whole thing – outfit with the green jacket + the styling – are horrific. Am I having flashbacks to the decade I’d rather forget??

    • Sue_Asponte

I loathed it too. Ugh. Zooey looks fine…

  • Call me Bee

That 60s mod look is her thing and she should stick with it as long as she can. Those clothes look fab on her. Way better than those scary models…

  • SpcilK

I like it, she is so quirky and awkward. I was expecting something predictable (goofy), but was plesantly suprised by how chic she is.

  • http://twitter.com/herong Heron

    I. Am. SOOOO. Tired. Of. Her.

  • Allyson Wells

Is that the Gucci jacket Emma Stone wore on the RC earlier this year?  I also have to mention that I LOVE New Girl… Of course Zooey is great, and the writing is pretty hilarious.

  • SapphoPoet

I love that black and gold Gucci dress–very Art Deco.

  • ChristySchiff

I love this.  This is the edgiest she’s looked, and I don’t think she looks like a child here…

  • sarahofalessergod

God, she bores me.  And how did she lose 30 pounds like the cover claims?  She’s always been tiny.

    • AlieMichelle

Maybe she got her hair trimmed. It looks like she could still lose another 10 or 15 off the top…

    • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

I think it’s about how she was “fat” as a child.

And I love your username. :)

    • Little_Olive

It’s meant justify the WTFery photoshop of her arms. See? you think they went overboard as you see the cover and a second later you have the explanatory “losing 30 lbs” statement. Someone at Marie Claire is on top of their game.

(Kidding aside, her face does look like she lost some weight)

  • http://twitter.com/jerseyemo Edwina

Gorgeous, harkens back to Almost Famous role. Love her.

  • http://twitter.com/rgmx Mercy

She may be one of the least interesting “quirky” lady celebrities ever.  But props to MC for having zero “how to please your man” or “how to catch a man” titles on the front cover.  I see the influence of the smart and classy Joanna Coles at work.

  • DaringMiss

That Gucci dress needs to be retired.

  • j_anson

*sigh* I was going to say I wish I didn’t find her so annoying so I could judge her more objectively, but, nah. I don’t care enough to have that wish. She’s annoying.

  • Dejah_Thoris

Those are some hella sexy dresses. She makes them not sexy.

  • poggi

She looks cute, even with a chain necklace and studded ankle cuffs.   She is anti-fierce.

  • http://www.facebook.com/foodhussy Heather Johnson

you didn’t pick the best one – there’s a pic of her looking saucy with cat ears!!!!

  • lordandtaylor

She looks great but the 60’s pixie thing can only last so long. Sorry to say, I think the time has come to move on. Nice clothes.

  • Spicytomato1

Love the shot in the black dress. Beautiful.

Really love the idea of styling her for another decade. Something 80s-inspired would be a great, unexpected look for her.

  • buildmeatower

I can’t stand her, but I will admit she looks lovely in these pictures. Wish they’d tamed her hair a bit, but I suppose that’s part of her shtick, isn’t it? One day properly brushed hair will come back into fashion… [says the girl who cut hers off so as not to have to deal with making it look nice every morning.]

  • fringebenefit

I know what they’re going for, but the eye make-up is so overdone, it’s difficult to locate her beautiful eyes in all that goop. If they’d backed off just a bit, the look would have been perfect. And agree with TLo, she’s going to be typecast forever if she doesn’t start expanding her look.

  • RebeccaKW

I much prefer her hair straight like this than the big frizzy curls.  She looks good, but I agree.  Let’s try something else for a while.

  • Sara__B

She’s cute-pretty, and her trademark long bangs accentuate that. I’d like to see something different. A quick internet search brought up very few sans-bangs pictures, but revealed nothing wrong with her forehead. Time for a change, Zooey?

  • Cousin_Rose

Would we know it’s Zoey without the big eyes?

  • TheOriginalLulu

Creepy eye makeup. Very Bride of Chucky.

  • Judy_J

I’ve liked her since “Tin Man”.  And if I were her age, I would want to look like this.  She reminds me of an edgier Marlo Thomas as “That Girl”.

  • rawrgrowlrawr

I find her to be anti-quirky. If kookiness seems painted on, it isn’t genuine, therefore it does not count. She grates.

However, she looks *gorgeous* here. I can’t deny that for a moment.

  • MilaXX

I’m so over Zoe, she is slowly shifting into Stars I dislike land.

  • http://twitter.com/chylde bellalozza

Just try to make “Ms. Twee as Fuck Zooey” edgy. Just try.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I’ve always worried that there’s no crossover from cute to hot, and I hate that she’s proving me right.

    • turtleemily

I think Drew Barrymore can do it. Zooey isn’t exactly giving “hot” face here, though. She’s always more like, “Who? Me?”

    • sekushinonyanko

She’s constantly confused for Katy Perry in public because they have damn near the same face. In fact, that probably had a lot to do with why both of them changed their hair. The only reason we look at her and go AWWW is because she turns up the preciousness in styling and makeup really, really, hard. She can do hot, all she’d need is to get her publicist some smelling salt and get a stylist on a shoot with some gumption.

  • sagecreek

    Twee as Fuck.

  • librarygrrl64

That Gucci dress is to DIE for. *sigh*

  • CQAussie

Looking all kinds of gorgeous in these shots =)

  • http://twitter.com/carelessriver Cassie L

This is edgy for Zooey, isn’t it?

  • Megan Patterson

Well that Gucci dress isn’t very mod, much more flapper. They should have really run with it and given her a faux Louise Brooks. I think she could pull it off.

  • bellafigura1

That green jacket/pleated pants combo is absolutely awful on the runway model.  Looks like stuff I’ve rejected at the consignment shop.  Yipes!

    • 2ndhandchic

I want to know what consignment shops you’ve been shopping at! I love that jacket.

  • NurseEllen

Goodness, that whole line of Gucci dresses has been ridiculously popular.  I could see the Audrebot in that Max Azria number.  And I could see Zooey as a big-eyed ’70s flower girl child, too.  Remember the Scavullo photo of Judy Collins on the cover of her “Judith” album, where her eyes were the size of saucers?

  • http://twitter.com/Goldielox73 Goldie

I love her (and her sister) but her name bugs me.  I look at it and expect it to be pronounced Zoo-e, not Zo-e.  Isn’t that the rule, two “Os” together make the ooo sound?

    • jjfg

You know, I just NOW realized Emily was her sister.  I don’t watch Bones often and I don’t even know what show or movie Zooey stars in (I’m guessing she’s an actor) so it’s just never struck me.

As for the name, I’d think it’s still Zo-e, but given that, above, I’m clearly not the one to ask!

  • granddelusion

    Recalls Ronstadt.

  • fiestyfashionfem

I love that damn Gucci dress!!! I want it soooo bad.  Her eyes look fake – don’t you think?  Not a real blue.

  • guest2visits

Yes! This game of dress-up doesn’t work very well if the celebrities don’t participate.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

EEEEW that first model in green looks like Victoria Beckham’s Angry Mother.

    • cleep1000

      You are so right!

  • http://twitter.com/Eovaai Eovaai

I love her look, as overdone as it is.  She looks fabulous.

  • ccm800

LOVE that second pic of her.

  • Katrina Atienza

I’m getting an “Elvira, Mistress of the Dark (Before Bitterness and Booze” vibe here.

  • Beardslee

Let’s just hope that she’s never made up like the models to look gaunt, consumptive, and nuts.

  • DominoEstella

You guys are just jealous.  I have a big eyed art collection that would make you guys cringe.

  • sid123

you guys are so on here! love the review. love.

  • http://profiles.google.com/ballinger.jl Jessica Ballinger

I just want to see her styled without those damn bangs for a change.  I’m convinced she’s got a bad tattoo on her forehead or something that she’s trying to cover up.

  • frankystein123

I simply cannot stand that woman.
