WERQ: Taylor Swift in J. Mendel

Posted on April 02, 2012

Oh, all right.

Taylor Swift attends the 2012 Academy Of Country Music Awards in a J. Mendel dress paired with Christian Louboutin shoes and  Lorraine Schwartz jewelry.

J. Mendel Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Kate King

Girl, we’ve given you a fair amount of shit over the years, but there’s no denying that we were right: once you slap some  platforms on, get a little cutout action, and straighten the princess hair, you can look downright fierce as shit when you want to. You WERQ that diva gown, bitch! Snaps up!

    FUQ YEAH TSWIZZLE!

For real, she looks killer, and I knew you guys were going to give her a ‘WERQ’ for this. Well deserved.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=49702581 Susan Bullard Mayer

Points for moving away from the princess look, but that dress is a bit funky.  Very IN but not quite a WERQ, at least for me.  Then again, I don’t have an amazingly popular blog :D

  • Maria Rosenfire

Eh. I give her props for leaving the “twee as fuck” zone, but this thing looks like it was constructed from plastic tablecloths and mylar balloons. Also, tacky platforms will always be tacky platforms, even if they’re Louboutins.

    • http://profiles.google.com/ameliaheartsu Amelia Logan

agreed I can’t give her points for edgy just because she straightened her hair…

  • PastryGoddess

Damn she looks good…and like an adult!

    more please Taylor

  • http://twitter.com/hmbscully WendyD

I still can’t stand her in general, but she does look fierce here. Finally.

  • sarahofalessergod

That’s one dress where the side view is 150% better than the front view.  Kind of a bit of a Jetsons thing going on, but I can dig it.

  • http://heartprintandstyle.blogspot.com Vivi N

    Taylor looks beautiful!

  • http://twitter.com/hdl_b Heather Barkman

When I saw her at the ACMs last night, I was excited to see what you had to say about this. Can’t say I disagree with the WERQ here. She looks great.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I dont’ love the dress, especially how the gold cuts at her knees.  But, overall she looks gorgeous and less twee, so I’ll give it to her.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

    Fierce is right. wowie!

  • TSkot

No, no, the cutouts look ridiculous!

  • allj

Hate the shoes, but the rest of it is amazing. She should straighten her hair for all red carpet events; it’s a huge transformation.

    • RebeccaKW

Agree.  I can understand her not wanting to take the time to blow it out and flat iron every day, but for an event like this, she’s hiring people.  Let them do it.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/J2VE4NE2FY2BP4QD2XOYKJGLPI Laura

Not at all twee. Love it!

  • janetjb

    Gorgeous

Stunning.  So much so that I have a hard time picturing another starlet looking quite this perfect in it.  And this is from a non-fan.  I don’t hate her anything, just rather indifferent, to epic levels.  But this I like, a lot.

    • Adriana_Paula

      I dunno…seems like Gwyneth’s dress to me.

  • Patricia Gillett

Hate, hate, hate the cutouts. She also does not have the figure to pull this off. And why the heck does she wear so much white? Not a WERQ for me at all.

  • RocknLox

The First Lady not only gave her an award, there was also a new wig in the prize basket…….

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

She needs to lock down that hair & makeup gay, because I’ve never seen her look that good.  Just wrestling that sharpie she usually lines her eyes with would have earned her a werq from me; but adding a dress an adult woman would wear?

    EPIC WERQ.

  • Judy_J

I’d like this gown better if it didn’t have the cutouts.  They ruin the fit of the bodice, in my opinion.

    • kittle

Oh that’s what it is.  I was trying to work out if it was an overall fit issue, but you’re right – it’s the cutouts.  They make the lower part of the front bib wrinkle

    • littlemac8

however she still gets an IN from me

  • gabbilevy

Better than fine when she’s working the cameras straight on, but then she slouches and ruins the look. C’mon girl! Shoulders back! Also, hate the bangs and the shoes.

  • http://twitter.com/arodenha Alli

The cutouts and gold remind me of Power Girl’s costume. Don’t ask me why my mine went there first, but whatever.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1523970099 Ana Cedillo

she looks soo good! i love her so much more when she doesnt look like stupid little disney princess. girl looks fierce and soo modelesque

    Stunning!

    Stunning!

  • JasmineAM

She’s on my irrational hate list, but I can’t deny that she looks better here. Not so much a WERQ, but good progress.

  • Laylalola

Never seen her without that super-red (awful) lipstick and weird black eyeliner. Even her hair looks less acidish yellow-blonde when ironed out. Almost – almost — could be a different person.

  • Little_Olive

She looks good. Not sure it’s WERK worthy.

The white shoes (esp the platforms) KILL it for me. They are too white and the platform is too high. They belong in a naughty nurse costume.

  • J D

I think she really learned something (hair and make-up wise) from her Vogue shoot.  She looks almost exactly like her cover photo, and it’s the best I think I’ve ever seen her look.

  • Cathy S

Look, Taylor’s growing up! She looks fabulous.

  • BazoDee

Oh my-is that some personality sneaking through? Lovely dress – she manages to look both amazing and boring  -how does she do that?

  • EditKitten

She looks pretty damn hot here. The hair really helps it, too.

  • poggi

I like this on her, especially posed.  It does not look quite as good on her when she moves (although that may be due to the length and shoes and how she is hunching a bit as she walks).

  • MzzPants

My God, she looks like a grownup.

  • carolynmo

I don’t care for the dress, but over all, she looks lovely.

  • Lilithcat

It would be a lovely dress if it had fabric where those cutouts are.

  • Pants_are_a_must

I’m sorry, I’m just laughing at the huge amount of eyeliner and false eyelashes she has on. Those bangs ain’t helping you look less squinty, but they do help you look like an E! presenter, all tackiness intact.

  • Jessica Goldstein

I hate cutouts but cannot deny that she looks fabulous in that gown.

  • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

Oooooh. Her hair looks SO much better like this! And she is one tall, cold drink of water in that gown.

  • No No

Her hair and makeup are lovely, but all I can see when I look at the dress is a unibrow and a frown.

  • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

my god I could not understand the attraction of this girl with her hair plastered down into marcel waves and raccoon eyes although I gave her credit for succeeding in show business despite being short-changed in the looks department.

now it turns out that all she needed was a make-over.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

Ouch, I’m not a huge Taylor Swift fan and I don’t think she’s drop-dead gorgeous or anything, but I think anyone would be hard-pressed to describe her as “short-changed in the looks department,” especially not to the degree that it would somehow prevent her from succeeding in show business.  And I have never seen her hair “plastered down into marcel waves”–she has natural curls that she doesn’t straighten very often.  I agree that it’s really nice to see her hair straightened every now and then for a change of pace, but I’m all for anyone letting their natural hair fly.

    • http://twitter.com/margs4 Margaret Grace

In addition to what ecallow said, I think it’s a pretty well-known
unspoken rule (that somehow everyone forgets every time Rose McGowan
shows up) that we unborn fawns are only judgey about the things people can
change–their hair, makeup, dresses, fit of the dresses, color of
dresses, strange polterwangs and silly putty shoes. You’ll notice that
T.Lo will never mock a person’s face or body. They will never say
someone is overweight or ugly; instead, they’ll recommend more
flattering cuts, colors, or makeup. It doesn’t matter how a celebrity
naturally looks; it matters how they WERQ (or don’t WERQ) with what
they’ve got. I think that’s what’s great about Tom, Lorenzo, and the
majority of the people who comment here.

      • http://twitter.com/margs4 Margaret Grace

        sorry for the strange formatting!

and now we shall return to our regularly scheduled bitchery.

  • http://twitter.com/chylde bellalozza

I hope she doesn’t try Taylor Swifting in that gown!

  • KaileeM

Heh. When I saw a recap on the news this morning of this awards ceremony and saw Miss Swift in this dress, I KNEW you guys would love it! And I do too! She looks great and not like a princess! Major improvement!

  • MilaXX

I guess this is opposite day for me on TLO . I think Taylor took a sexy dress and made it look boring as hell, complete with bland, blown out hair.

  • oohsparkley!

I saw this on the show and I agree it was a Werq!

  • P M

The dress is far too long. There – I feel better!

  • Rand Ortega

Wow! Can’t stand her music, but that is 1 incredibly gorgeous girl. Loved her Vogue editorial, too! She should play Stevie Nicks in the biopic.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

stevie nicks is maybe five feet tall. maybe.

    • Spicytomato1

No! The one and only time I’ve seen her perform (on TV) was on some awards show with Stevie Nicks and she just butchered the song. I remember feeling mortified for Stevie.

  • alyce1213

I disdain most cut-out dresses–so many go to the vulgar side, but this one’s tasteful (though the dress would be better without the cutouts), and frankly she needed it.
    WERQ!

  • Joyce VG

    MEH!

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Is there no one in the entertainment industry who can hem a garment?

  • Monica Day

I wonder if this is what Jennifer Lawrence’s team thinks her bangs look like?

  • http://victoriapavlova.com Victoria Pavlova

Love the look, pretty and fierce at the same time. And finally, some really interesting dress that is not too harsh or too fussy.

  • formerlyAnon

I’m not a fan of the cut-outs, but even so, it’s a WERQ. Maybe she’s hitting her stride?

  • Spicytomato1

Love the dress, hate the bangs. And the fact that her hair matches the detail on the dress. Not doing it for me.

  • Kimberlini

Now that she’s straightened her hair, I can see that horrific overbite.  Girlfriend needs a retainer STAT.

  • PeaceBang

Too  long + hooker shoes. She’s getting there, but I wouldn’t support the nomination for WERQ status here.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/ZFKRECRF5BOBWB4RXAJGI4D6KA mmc

Miss T looks fab.  It’s the hair and make-up that clinch it for me.  I didn’t even recognize her at first!  Chic!

  • Susan Walker

It helps that she is actually looking a bit more mature.

  • http://twitter.com/HeckYeahHeckNo KC

She looks great. I agree that the dress is a big funky but she’s still WERQING the hell out of that dress. And her hair and makeup look great.

  • Laura Valentine

Is it me, or does her makeup make her look like Lady Gaga?

  • Lisa

Yep, gotta give it to her!  WERQ!

  • quiltrx

She looks great, and she looked really cute on the Kids’ Choice show too.

  • MmmmmmmmK

It’s like she got a Tyra makeover with the darker, straighter hair and the bangs, and now she lookalike a grown-up model.

  • RWtD

    So… a WERQ occurred… at the ACMs?

    The end is near.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1077090078 Megan Sullivan

Wow, she looks fabulous. Love the hair and makeup.

  • ri_dic

    Wow.

  • unbornfawn

Wow. She looks like a WOMAN here! Nice job Taylor.

  • TieDye64

While I don’t exactly love the dress I’ll say she’s WERQing it. Sooo much better than the princess hair and foofy gowns. I’m so glad she’s not giving us so much sugary sweetness. My teeth thank her.

  • sleah_in_norcal

i still say she got either an eye lift or a genius makeup gay, cause i’m not seeing those piggy eyes anymore.  brava.  love the dress, too.

  • http://twitter.com/drnels Nels P. Highberg

    Those eyes. Damn.

  • aristida_girl

Wow, Ms. Swift grew up when I wasn’t looking..

  • nancylee61

She looks gorgeous when she gets rid of that little girl look. Really stunning.

  • Diego!

    She looks simply amazing!

  • guest2visits

Looks like this dress was made for her. And I’m not crazy about cutouts; but here they aren’t too tacky or trashy.

  • http://www.facebook.com/tiyuju Yuju Ti

The dress is OK, the hair and make up are really cool.

  • ccm800

hell no. That last pic tells the real story. Puh-leez

  • frankystein123

Wow, once she ironed her hair out, applied the right eye shadow, and put on some chic cloth, BAM!
