WERQ: Scarlett Johansson in Versace

Posted on April 12, 2012

There’s a ton of Avengers premiere pictures in the pipeline for today, but for now, we’d like to single out Miss Scarlett (in the conservatory, with the knife).  We’ve given her a hard time for the past year or so because it looked to us like her divorce had left her floundering, based on her fashion choices. She dabbled in a retro style for a while, but it looked awkward and it aged her a bit. And then there was a succession of clumsy, unflattering and ill-fitting outfits that left us weeping in despair. We never really did understand why it was hard for her. She’s got both a killer body and a killer face.  It’s not exactly difficult to make that look good.

Scarlett Johansson attends the premiere of “The Avengers” in LA in a Versace dress paired with Giuseppe Zanotti sandals.

Versace Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Nadja Bender

Giuseppe Zanotti Strappy Sandals

See, Scar? Not so hard, right? You WERQ that not-so-basic black dress, girl!

Although we would have loved the red shoes paired with it. Oh, and yank your skirt down, honey. Otherwise, our fairy blogsisters are going to employ the “polterwang” dig – and nobody wants that, now do they?

      Modest dominatrix works on her.

    • Joe_Willie

It looks like the same dress Jennifer Aniston had on recently. It was a black and white check and I think it was Tom Ford.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Not precisely a WERQ for me. I just not loving that inverse neckline. She looks good. Hair and makeup, great.  Not feeling the love for that dress.

      • BazoDee

        Exactly my thoughts!

      • YoungSally

The neckline creates the illusion that she is sticking out her boobs.  Maybe it would look better if it didn’t end so close to her clavicle.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

You’re right, I think the arc is too extreme.

      • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m not feeling that neckline, either. But I think, given Scarlett’s fashion missteps of the past year, a LBD is a safe way to begin WERQ’ing her way back into TLo’s good graces.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Our estimable hosts are so gracious, they are giving her a leg up here.  And I commend them for their expansive, loving behavior. (meant entirely without irony, or sarcasm)

      • butterflysunita

I agree–she looks beautiful, but I don’t like the dress at all.  The bodice is weird–almost like a piece of armor.

      • TAGinMO

Totally agree. While this look is perfectly passable, this award reeks of WERQ inflation.

      • kimmeister

The neckline is doing weird things to the proportions of her arms and shoulders.

    • Lochery

      Me no likey.

    • MilaXX

Looks a skoosh tight, but overall pretty.

    • http://twitter.com/FlaviaGPantoja Flavia Pantoja

Oh boy, I really hate that neckline! I don’t think it is at all flatering. Sorry, just don’t think she is WERQ material just yet.

      • Elizabeth Wakefield

Same here, I really hate that neckline! I think it makes her look sort of like a body builder without muscles, or something.

        • mountainFashionista

          Funny comment.  Love your name!

      • Pannyx

I concur. That neckline ruins any WERQness this dress may have had. (Plus I can’t stand her bird’s nest of a hairstyle)

        • DCSheehan

J’agree with all the above. She’s so gorge and yet it all looks … off somehow.

    • CRISTIAN VALENZUELA

She looks good, no doubt better than her last appearances this year. But I wouldn’t go as far as to call this a WERQ. Yes, hair and makeup look great; the dress is cute and interesting. But I don’t think it flatters her that much. I think it looks a little stiff, and makes her look a little more wide than she really is.

      • mountainFashionista

Not only the dress, but also her posing is SO stiff & awkward: “Now… where do I put my hands again?”

    • twocee

Love the shoes, HATE the dress, especially in the close-up.

    • Kyle Crawford

she looks beautiful, but I am reading ” breastplate ” here…. and not in a good way. It seems to do something odd to her shoulders – but not so much in the close up shot.. so I don’t know

    • BazoDee

That neckline is just not flattering. Sorry -no werq for me.

    • deathandthestrawberry

Not crazy about the top part of the dress, but I love those shoes. It’s so nice to see elegant strappy heels again instead of those bear traps that were so popular.

    • Cathy S

I don’t like the dress. But I love her hair, and the shoes, and she looks fabulous even with the awful dress.

    • sarahofalessergod

I love the neckline.  LOVE.  And the shape, color, and accents all work to make it vaguely superhero-reminiscent without veering into kitsch or heavy-handed styling.  Brava.

    • jw_ny

I don’t have OCD, but it may be being triggered by the straps on her right ankle…and yes, smooth out that skirt!  I’m curious if that skirt is so tight that it’s flattening out her butt…flat smushed butts are not attractive.

anywho…Hair and makeup are really pretty.

      • kimmeister

Yes, the wonky straps are making me batty too!  (Plus, the fact that there are just far too many straps on those dang sandals).

        • http://profiles.google.com/ellenbehm Ellen Behm

I really want to run over and fix that strap for her.

          • kimmeister

I initially read that as “I really want to run her over.” Ha!

    • nannypoo

Chest shield, hip wings, non-shoes, messy hair and a big crotch crease. How is this a WERQ?

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/55S5MFHEAUA6KSI3LHEML4HUEY choco

The dress makes her look like a chess piece.

    • http://twitter.com/arodenha Alli

That dress top looks like a breastplate – such a weird look on her. Sorry TLO, not feeling it.

    • ccm800

putting my mind to a young(er) Uma Thurman.

      • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Maybe subconsciously because Uma was in a really crappy movie called “The Avengers” (totally different avengers, apparently) about 10+ years ago?

    • MissAnnieRN

She looks pretty good, but that bodice – it looks like an Easter Egg dyed black and wearing a peplum.  I can’t unsee it.  What is it with peplums these days?  I swear to go, Julianna Margulies is wearing a suit jacket with a peplum in EVERY. SCENE. on The Good Wife.  And they are just everywhere.  I’ve reached peplum critical mass.

    • http://twitter.com/suryasnair suryasnair

Nyet. Cobie was better than her. Grading on a curve, are we now?

    • NurseEllen

I had to look up “polterwang”.  The photos are too dark (at least on my computer) to assess for that particular fashion faux pas, but she looks passably OK to me.  Great hair & makeup but I want to take a razor and slash those wings off her hips.  Sorry, TLo, this is not a WERQ for me.  Cobie Bryant, or whatever her name was, did lots better earlier today.

      • jw_ny

LOL!  Kobe Bryant is basketball player…never seen a werq from him on here.

Cobie Smulders, otoh, looked fab in the feature earlier today.   ;)

and polterwang, per the urban dictionary…”the “phantom penis” effect certain pants have upon the female form.” XD

        • NurseEllen

OF COURSE I know Kobe Bryant is a basketball player……it was a lame attempt at a pun.  You know: Kobe/Cobie?  And you are so right, no WERQs for him from TLo.  Probably not for many professional sports players.  Although God knows the ones in the big leagues have big enough contracts to give them enough money to spend on fab clothing.  I always thought it was odd that in basketball and hockey the coaches dress in suits & ties for the most part.  Why the double standard, I wonder?

          • jw_ny

haha…I should have realized you were making a pun, it’s pretty obvious now…sorry for taking it so literally.  I need emoticons on message boards to help convey the attitudes.  Best I can do here is add a ;) (wink) to let others know I’m making a subtle joke …not sure if others read it that way though.  I don’t think most people get my online humor….not that I care.  ;)

I always think it’s funny that baseball coaches wear the uniform…like they’re actually playing…gonna run a base.  XD

    • msdamselfly

      OUT
      Ugly neckline
      Hair and makeup IN

    • Anathema_Device

Not sure I’m feeling the WERQ here. Although, if we’re grading her on her past efforts, then I can understand it. I’d give her an In if this were an In or Out post. The pulling across the hips and the nearly invisible jewelry bug me. I’d love to see slightly showier earrings or a more dramatic bangle. Otherwise, a cool dress and she looks waaaaay better than she has lately.

    • BrooklynBomber

Miss Scarlett (in the conservatory, with the knife)
Since she’s on my irrational hate list. . . .

But I can be fair. I admitted Zoey D. (who’s on my rational hate list) looked great the other day. But this dress? TERRIBLE. It’s so structured it can’t really fit anyone properly (except maybe a freakishly tall and skinny model), especially if the wearer has to do anything but stand still, because this dress will not move with the body.

    • Judy_J

The red shoes would have been perfect with that dress, but hey, it’s a minor point.  She looks fabulous.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1077090078 Megan Sullivan

I don’t really like it, but that could just be that I don’t like her…

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=49702581 Susan Bullard Mayer

The skirt doesn’t fit!  No WERQ for me.

    • Kayceed

She is shielding us from her formidable cleavage.

    • SignLadyB

Not bad but I’m not crazy about the ‘bib’ bodice. It looks like the church of the unexposed bosoms  modified it for decencies sake. Agree, the red shoes would have excused the bodice.

    • TheOriginalLulu

I like everything except that neckline.
She has an amazing body. I know we say all these celebs have great bodies because they’re thin, but Scarlett is all va-va-va-voom.

    • http://twitter.com/jaythenerdkid Aaminah Khan

Not sure I like the hair. Haven’t we seen that style on her a million times before?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=506473106 Mori Clark

not a huge fan of that neckline in general, but she looks pretty good. also a huge fan of her black widow character in the ironman 2 + avengers, she didnt take shit from no one

    • guest2visits

Dress looks great for her; wish she had chosen some wicked, pointy pumps instead; these aren’t sexy enough.

    • CQAussie

Yeah the red shoes would have been better but I’m really not digging those shoes in general.  Too many straps!  But love the hair, make-up and the black dress =)

    • ballerinawithagun

The red shoes would have made this perfection!

    • MzzPants

If she’d worn the model’s gloves, I’d have squeed with fangirl glee.

      • mountainFashionista

         I covet the model’s boots, myself.  :-)

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jane-Morris/1076502799 Jane Morris

Yeah, I don’t think it’s very flattering on her. Something about that ‘neckline’ makes her arms look big. We know her arms are not big. And she looks like one of those people who has no shoulders. We know she has shoulders.

    • Amy Ellinger

can’t get past the neckline. does it hit her in the chin when she sits down?  an IN, but not a WERQ from me.

      want the shoes. now.

    • EEKstl

She looks great, but would a mani/pedi have killed her?

    • Jecca2244

      Talk about genetic jackpot!

    • http://www.facebook.com/AntoniaDonnelly Antonia O’Connor Donnelly

I don’t like the dress, nor the Bride of Frankenstein hair.  OUT.

    • LuisaNL

she looks really good. not loving the neckline on the dress, tho. I covet those sandals.

    • FlamingJune1967

She’s wearing a too tight LBD that aspires to be unique but just comes across as awkward.   How is this a werq?

    • xokandykane109

I love the dress on her, it’s totally a WERQ– but her shoe straps on the left are setting off my OCD.

    • formerlyAnon

How come she looks like Jackie Warner (if that’s her name, the L.A. gym owner & trainer who had a reality show for a while?) in these pictures? I never saw that resemblance before.

    • Glammie

Don’t adore the neckline, but I think she’s pulling it off.  Kudos for managing a challenging pair of shoes, though red would have been way more fun.

She’s still looking older than she needs to.  I wish she’d lighten it up a little.

    • snarkykitten

what?! it looks like she shoved Captain America’s shield down her dress. That cut is whack

    • Miss_Led

Peplum = BLEH! Blus the weird neckline = No WERQ-y.

    • http://twitter.com/AShinyOConnor A Shiny O’Connor

She looks great but I’m not for those ‘which shape goes in the slot kids’ neckline (Je n’adore pas those square Armani ones). It reminds me of a Phillipe Starck dining chair in a new money mansion.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=27432316 Ally Monge

Really guys? This is a WERQ???… I feel for the lady…she lost Ry Rey, but this is not good. She doesn’t even have a uni-boob, it is like an egg-boob. Her face looks lovely, because she is a gorgeous woman, but that outfit is such a no-go to me. And peplum can be so unkind to we who are not sticks. …. After taking a second look it looks like the bodice is an egg shaped rocket ship taking off from the skirt.

    • ChaquitaPhilly

“Polterwang!” Love it! Would have looked better with those red shoes, though. Good call!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_543JWZNT6UC5FCKPTKDBC2XKTQ cheryl

I love that you two and the Fug Girls all love each other. It’s the same sort of feeling as when one of your best friends from college meets one of your best friends from post-college life and they totally get along and you can all hang out together in a big circle of love and mutually-recognized awesomeness. It also might be similar to how my mom feels when my sister and I get along with each other at holidays.

    • Violina23

Eh, the shape is too odd for me, too “Jetsons”. I like the shoes though!

    • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

Blade Runner clothes. The model is scarier and thus better.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Mary-Stone/100001328135240 Mary Stone

The only thing that doesn’t work for me is that arch at the top of the bustline, the model has a longer neck/greater distance between it and her shoulderblades.  ScarJo is smaller, so I think they needed to edit that extreme arch a bit to be in keeping with her proportions, it looks oddly like a shield that she’s hiding  behind (boob-shield?), but I love the shoes.

      • cleep1000

Exactly. The arch is too high and looks oddly pointed.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Renee-Rohrer-Bomar/100002942684824 Renee Rohrer Bomar

I agree, but… did you just infer that a model was BIGGER?

        • snarkykitten

I think she meant bigger as in taller

    • TheOtherChristina

For once, I think a dress ought to be a mini. I don’t need to see her undercrackers but more leg would really help with the proportions, which are a little off to me. Otherwise it’s pretty great, though, and I’m glad she’s not looking so depressed anymore.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/TAGNQTBUWSQDOYB3QINAE2NDYM Spike

Loved the dress on the runway and, oddly, love it on Scar. Lord knows she doesn’t need a dress to give her curves, and the general rule is that built out hips only work if you don’t come with your own, but this dress on her body seems to defy that logic.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

i think it looks better than it really has a right to look. &/or/but yep, i agree she shoulda coulda stuck to the original red shoes.

    • bellafigura1

Yeah, the bodice kills it, right?  What the hell?  She’s so spectacular looking, it’s almost like she’s working harder to NOT get it right.

    • girliecue

Once a year or so our biorhythms seem to be on opposite wavelengths, dear T Lo. In the past this has resulted in me flinging t-straps at my poor computer screen or marching out of the house with matching shoes and purse muttering, “THIS’LL show them!” Today I’m just wrinkling my nose while scrolling down. Don’t like the dress design or fit, meh about the hair, and wish she chose a more vibrant lip color. Not surprisingly we disagree about the shoes – I love them and am fine with the color. Scarlett falls into the same category as Jennifer Aniston to me. They both feel forced upon the public. I feel like a child whose caregiver is trying to get them to eat their vegetables every time I see either of them. “C’mon sweetie, look at just one more snap. You’ll see, you’ll love her after you take a look at her latest RC appearance! Open your eyes… there’s a good duckie…”

      Blech.

      • Swiftlytiltingplanet

I am inclined to agree with you…except about the shoes. I tend to think of red patent leather shoes as a neutral (I realize that, as with my love of tequila ,this can, by some, be regarded as a character flaw) and try to rein it in, but, in this case, I think they would have added a much needed “pop!”.

        • girliecue

Don’t share your love of tequila (my body keeps telling me I reached my tequila limit in my 30s), but as someone whose wardrobe is 80% black, white or red, I completely agree with you that red is a neutral color. It’s also my favorite  :D

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josefina-Madariaga-Suárez/100002964685796 Josefina Madariaga Suárez

She looks so lovely fresh, IN all the way :D

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

She’s certainly getting her look back on track, but that dress was made red shoes and some statement jewelry wouldn’t have gone amiss.

    • quiltrx

Her shoulders aren’t broad enough for this dress, IMO.  Mine are, but my everything else is TOO broad. Sigh.

    • lilazander

Love the dress and the neckline too (I would appreciate a dress like that being 0/1 size downand d-cups abd road shoulders; I think it’s sexy and modest for a voluptuous lady as S.Jo), b/c it’s different and not cleveage-centered as it woud normally be with her, and we can still admire her assets. Te Zanotti’s, though  sexy in a delicate/rugh way and beautifully proportioned, I would pick the red ones with the black dress, or golden ones (if there are golgen ones to be acquired). I love her look.

    • Bozhi

I just cannot buy into that neckline or whatever it is.

    • Corsetmaker

I think it’s interesting. I’m unsure about the top of the bodice, but I think that’s more a getting used to issue than a real complaint… it’s just different. I do like the hip shaping, you need good waist definition for that to work and she has that.

    • Yael Shuval

You know what, I think one of of the main issues I have with her red carpet appearances is how she stands. I know many people have harped on about the ScarJo pigeon-toed stance, but I am finally starting to get it. She looks beautiful, but the way she stands makes her look uncertain.

    • RzYoung

Meh, I’m not sure I like it. It showcases her arms and shoulders when really she should be showcaseing her fab face, bum, legs and b**bs. Her make up looks lovely. I dislike the tattoo

    • fringebenefit

Absolutely hate this dress. The point on the bodice is such a clumsy affectation.

    • I’ve Got Rocks In My Bed

That hair style is not yankin! and those shoes are not yankin!

    • tsid2012

She does look fantastic here but I HATE with a searing passion that bustline.  Scarlett does wear it better than the model at least.

    • http://twitter.com/BMoke28 Bernadette Moke

She looks like sharon stone here..

    • bitterk

She nailed this one.  She should buy it in 10 colors and alternate.
