WERQ: Michelle Obama in Naeem Khan

Posted on April 30, 2012

We need a little breather after that Mad Men post and we’ve got a ton of White House Correspondents’ Dinner (or as DC and media insiders like to call it, “Nerd Prom,” although we prefer “Versailles on Vicodin” ourselves) red carpet pics to plow through later, but let’s single one lady out for being First among them all, in title and in style.

Shelley shut the room down again.

First lady Michelle Obama attends the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in Washington in a Naeem Khan gown.

You WERQ that shit, FLOTUS.

Her hair, makeup and jewelry is so on point. (I have less to say about the dress because I can’t see it all that well, but what I can see looks great also.)

    • HomeOfficeGirl

Yes, wish I could see the full dress, but from what I can tell – FABULOUS!  The colors are gorgeous on her!

  • BazoDee

Really? She looks lovely and I do love her, but I can’t help but feel this isn’t a WERQ – maybe a werq? Some accessories? The overall color pallet of the dress isn’t doing anything for me. Maybe if I saw a full shot.

    • Little_Olive

Yep. And I miss the shoulder treatment -its balances out the skirt and opens the fabric making the print less busy.

      • VeryClaire

Agreed. The strapless “neckline” is boring.

        • Judih1

          My thoughts exactly

      • BazoDee

I wonder why they chose to lose it.

      • I also prefer it with the strap.  Dress is gorgeous.  Makeup is fine.  Hair looks very dated.

      • NC_Meg

I’m not sure, but it seems like she’s done the one shoulder thing before and it didn’t work so well. I like it both ways but I think strapless was the best choice for Shelly.

    • I wish she’d kept the shoulder strap as well, but I love that pattern and colors on her.

      • BazoDee

I see a lot of people do -so I know I’m in the minority. I’m almost the exact same color as her and I can see it looks nice under the right light but maybe I’m just imposing my own reality on the dress.

      • Candigirl1968

Given that she already has had at least two showstopper pieces this year that were one shoulder gowns (that gorgeous red one from the BET Awards, and the Governor’s Ball dress that had the sheer tie at the shoulder), she might have wanted to change things up.

  • guestela

    She looks so fantastic! Beautiful.

  • Callie Thompson

Brilliant of her to eliminate the strap!

    • I actually really like the strap – and I am not a fan of the one-shoulder gown. But I totally agree that on FLOTUS it looks amazing strapless. It’s a fabulous use of print and colour and her hair is so pretty!

    • Sobaika Mirza

I really like the strap, but she has such great shoulders and arms that she looks amazing in strapless.

  • fauxhawk

I saw this photo and could not wait to see what you had to say about it. She’s lovely! So feminine and gorgeous.

  • calimon

I actually don’t know that I’ve seen her look so F’n Fabulous! Ever. I can’t stop looking at her! Can’t imagine what it must’ve been like to witness her live.

  • Patricia Gillett

Love it. Also like that she let the dress shine by keeping the jewelry to a minimum. Making the dress compete with one of her famous statement necklaces would have been a mistake, in my opinion. Hair looks great, make-up looks great, arms on display, all-around WERQ!

  • That print looks fabulous on her, LOVE the hair!

  • colleenjanel

Love her. Simply love her! And so happy that she (her stylist?) got rid of the strap. I’m so over one shoulder dresses!

    • VeryClaire

But it’s preferable to the straight across bath towel look.

  • mjude

  • a couple thin, understated bangles perhaps? in the (i’m presuming) antiqued gold of the earrings?

  • MissAnnieRN

I’m not loving the retro Charlie’s Angels hair.  But man do I wish I had her arms.

  • Beth G

A full length picture would really be needed before I can agree with WERQ.  She does look nice though.

  • Le_Sigh

YESSS!  I saw a snap of this over the weekend and thought how damn amazing her hair looks like that!  LURV the Charlie’s Angels FLOTUS flip-out!

    What a WERQ indeed 🙂

    • Amy Ellinger

Agreed on her hair- its crazy good, and utterly FABulous!!

  • Wish we could see the whole thing, not sure it is werq worthy but she looks good. Kind of wish she had left the strap.

  • Anathema_Device

Absolutely stunning. Even in that (gorgeous) bold, shiny print dress, with its volume, folds, and pleats, you just notice her and her beauty and presence. It takes quite a woman to werq a dress like that and not let the dress wear her.

All the styling is perfect, too. Love that hairstyle on her.

  • Elizabetta1022

I just love her. A good friend of mine actually worked for Shelley O. in Chicago back in the day. My friend said she was smart, dedicated and tough–but great to work for. Barack apparently came into the office sometimes, too, and my friend said they were both “the real deal.”  The thing I love most about Michelle Obama is how natural she is. You just get the sense that the woman is a rock for her family. And yes, she has great style. LOVE this dress.

    • lamireille

Thanks for that fun little bit of inside information! It’s always good to hear that a famous person you like is a nice person in real life, too.

  • marilyn

    Looks perfect!

  • Can’t the First Lady pose as if on the red carpet with a step and repeat and all that? I know it won’t happen but I can dream. After all. she, and her amazing dresses, need to be able to be seen more clearly!

This gown seems so lovely but leaves me wishing for better images.

  • Loved her in this. When she brings it, she puts every other lady in the room to shame. Kind of hoping Obama gets re-elected just so I get four more years of Michelle’s style.

  • MilaXX

    Fabulous, ain’t she? WERQ!!

  • Wish I could see the full length picture. Stunning dress. She looks beautiful.

  • Sobaika Mirza

She really seems to love Naeem Khan, as she should! His work really suits her.

  • The dress highlights her body and her coloring so well, and it’s such a beautiful and unusual print.  I would have liked to see a full shot too, because I bet she rocked it.  I think her accessories are fine; she could maybe have done a bangle, but I like the hoops and cocktail ring.  The print is too busy, and the effect of dress vs. arms-and-chest too striking, to permit jewelry around her neck.

  • piecesofconfetti

Wish I could see the full dress on her, but from what I can see – LOVE! She looks great. And what a stunning dress to begin with.

  • Cheri Lee

Gorgeous dress on a gorgeous woman. The mother of WERQs here today.

  • Stubenville

I agree that she looks great and I’m glad she lost the strap. The Wilma has been done to death; time to move on.

    • Miranda

OK, I dont know if you made it up or its an actual fashion term…but it took me a sec to realize what you meant by “The Wilma”, and I can’t stop laughing. That is too funny to me.

      • Stubenville

I wish I could take credit, but I didn’t coin that phrase.

Eagerly anticipating the style post for this. There were some really good look and a few hot messes. I even saw a few dresses that I recognized from either RC appearances or editorials I’d seen on this blog.

  • I admire the hell out of this woman, not the least because of her style. Never have I seen a woman who can look so elegant and comfortable in her skin at the same time. She’s so CHILL!!

Agree on the WERQ.  She looks beautiful — hair, makeup, dress, everything.  Very well done Michelle.

  • toriadoria

I love me some FLOTUS, but damn, girl, stand up straight. She looks positively depressed in that last picture.

  • I l love and respect the First Lady regardless what she is wearing. She is the best.

  • prettybigkitty

She looks stunning.  One of her best looks overall IMHO.

  • nancylee61

I wish I could find a full length picture of her. Her hair, make-up and top half are flawless. I am curious as to whether she left that drape alone – it looks like she did in the one picture, and I wish I could see it!!

  • nannypoo

She looked so beautiful wearing all those colors, sitting by a huge arrangement of flowers. Spectacular.

  • EEKstl

She looks gorgeous and brava for not going with the shoulder strap.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

she’s all ‘aint no temple garments under here, so bring it, bitch!’

  • Eva_baby

I’m glad she ditched the strap.

I’m sad she seems to have abandoned her love for bangles though.

  • PeaceBang

I never tire of this fabulous woman.

  • siriuslover

I love those colors on her. I think she and Naeem Khan are a good fit.

  • jjfg

Not always a fan of her style, but she sure hit this one out of the park!

  • Oh and the hair! Snaps in the snap cup for you Shelly O!

  • padma sallah

She looks so soft and pretty. Love the hair and the print of the gown.

  • unbornfawn

    What a fabulous First Lady!

  • suzq

We are REAL beltway nerds and watched the whole thing on C-SPAN.  Michelle presented some awards earlier in the evening and looked splendid in the dress.  It’s a shame that her version was strapless because the print is so beautiful.  Just a little bit more of it would have been pretty.  But she easily outshown every other woman in the room…even Sophia Vergara.

  • Judy_J

    Gorgeous.  Simply gorgeous.

  • Fabulous. Smart enough to avoid her normal ENORMOUS necklaces with this busy print. I kind of wish she’d kept the one-shoulder thing, but whatever, she looks magnificent.

  • ErmengardeGreen

So amazing that we have a First Lady who wears a beautiful colorful strapless gown. I want her to stand up straighter and I kind of miss the strap from the runway version, but there is no arguing the fact that she’s shutting it down. Luv huh.

  • MzzPants

Oh M G, she looks fab!  I LUV her hair like that.  Wish there was a full body shot.

  • EmilyMullasWilson

In the last photo, the woman all the way on the left looks like she’s in the middle of the big O.

  • quiltrx

She looks fantastic!  Elegant dress, and I LOVE her hair.

  • Please stop using the word “shit” all the time. There is a time and place for overt profanity and this, as a public forum, is not one of them. It’s off putting and doesn’t associate well with high fashion and glamour.

    • Whever

Seriously, dude? It’s a blog, not a symposium. Calm down.

    • Well shit, we couldn’t possibly disagree more.

      • boweryboy

        You tell him TLo!

  • CassandraMortmain

Stunning dress and hair and makeup are perfect.  But I think it was a mistake to lose the shoulder strap, since most of the images of her from this event were of her sitting at the dais and all you saw for the most part were her bare shoulders.  It was a little odd, almost as if she was naked behind the floral arrangements.  And I do wish she had worn a couple of her signature bangles.

  • jw_ny

Yes, werq that shit!   Michelle looks beautiful and the print, colors, and style of the dress, are perfect for her.  I think the shoulder strap, as on the model, would have been an improvement, but no quibbles about it either…

  • Lina_bee

Hmm. It’s not my favorite thing she’s ever worn, but she does rock those colors and her makeup looks great.

  • She is WORKING it like no body’s business.  That hair and the dress….Beautiful. On point…and blew everyone else out of the water. If you want to see the MOST HIDEOUS dresses ever at a dinner…the NYTimes has the runway pics. Let’s just say, shiny, fluffy, and all around yucky!

  • erinbinek

LOVE her hair.  She should never ever pull it back tight again.

  • Snailstsichr

I wonder if membership in health clubs goes up every time Shelley shows her guns? She is just breath-taking fabulous!

  • Sophie Collier

Woo!  Love that hairstyle!  Keep it, Michelle!  So, is the dress modified or did she just tuck the shoulder strap inside?  I’m sort of surprised she went strapless and sexy.  You go, girl!

  • sleah_in_norcal

who’s the blond?  flotus looks smashing.

    • ASH

  • Lilak

Love this Naeem, esp. on a woman of color, esp. on M.O.  . . .
A pity about the loss of the shoulder treatment (though her skin seems to display a sort of phantom of it?!).  I’d understand if it was to make way for a necklace maybe, but she didn’t do that.

This moved beautifully on the catwalk — the back of the skirt rippled like a dream.

And in spite of the fact that many tiny elves painstakingly crafted this gown, its pattern, the low-key jewelry, the softer hair keep the look balanced in very-beautiful-very-colorful-but-not-threatening territory.  (Election year!)

  • LesYeuxHiboux

Okay, I am far from a breathless Shelley O fangirl but she is killing it here. Great hair, jewelry, dress. My only quibble is that I wish more of the light colors in the pattern were near her face, since her hair casts a shadow.

  • xmixiex

    that dress is TO DIE.

  • Sara-Ann Collins

I am so glad she stopped wearing things that got rid of her waist. She looks like she’s finally figuring out what works.

  • alyce1213

The dress is gorgeous on FLOTUS, but I may have preferred it with the strap. Either way, it is her dress for sure.

I do wish she’d hold her shoulders down and back, and stand a bit straighter.

    • RedRaven617

      Exactly my thoughts

  • TheOtherChristina

Flawless. She was born to wear these colors.

  • TheOtherChristina

Flawless. She was born to wear these colors.

  • Call me Bee

Absolutely stunning, especially the hair.  Well done, Ms FLOTUS!

  • Warren221

Mere sorrow, which weeps and sits still, is not
repentance. Repentance is sorrow converted into action; into a movement
toward a new and better life.

  • Jessica O’Connell

She looks gorgeous! LOVE the hair!

  • SignLadyB

O M Gahhhhh! That is just beautiful! She is just beautiful!!!!!

  • She looks fabulous. FABULOUS. I luv her.

  • Lisa

    BEEEEEYOOOOTIFUL!!!  Go Shelley O!

  • Alyson Lamble

I am going to be a major voice of dissent here and argue that the print overall doesn’t go well with FLOTUS’ skin tone, and she should have kept the strap in order to balance out her shoulders.  Strapless dresses do nothing for her except exacerbate her occasional posture problems.

  • boweryboy

Never mind Shelley…who are those two cuties sandwiching her?

    • Alyson Lamble

That’s Jimmy Kimmel to her right – he hosted the dinner this year.  Not sure who the gentleman to her left is.

    • Derek_anny

I was so distracted by not-Kimmel that I almost didn’t notice seizure lady in the back.

  • AudreysMom

if it hasn’t already been said (and if it has it deserves repeating) Four more (fucking) years.

  • bellafigura1

I love this dress — its killer on the runway — and she looks fantastic, but yeah, she needed the shoulder strap.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

  • she looks AMAZING!! that hair is the BEST, I’ve ever seen!!!
