WERQ: Mena Suvari in Tadashi Shoji

Posted on April 23, 2012

This isn’t a particularly tough dress to pull off and the styling is about as expected as it could be…

Mena Suvari attends “American Reunion” Madrid Photocall. Mena Suvari wore a Tadashi Shoji dress.

Tadashi Shoji Fall 2012 Collection

… but DAMN, girl. You look AMAZING.You are WERQing that shit like it owes you back pay.

Love your hair, darling!

I agree!  The dress looks better without the sheer black stockings the runway model is wearing.

    • mshesterp

Hmm…I disagree–I think the black stockings might have made her legs look a little better.  The dress almost seems too formal without them, like it needs to be a dressed up dress and without the stockings it looks like it’s at the wrong event.

I’m happy with her from the knees up.  From the neck up, definitely!

      • guest2visits

Yes!… Mena should have replicated the model; that was one beautiful dress as pictured on the runway.

      • RebeccaKW

I agree.  Especially with the scrapes on her knee.  I would want to camouflage that.

  • tallgirl1204

owie on her knee?  I think it’s a cute dress, but the length is somehow a little wrong.  I think her legs would be better flattered by another inch or two on the hem.

    • oohsparkley!

I agree about the inch or two.  Still a great look and I want that dress so much it hurts.

      • rainwood1

I also agree about the length  The additional tier on the model gives it a more sophisticated look.  Mena was wise not to stick with the runway length because she’s quite petite, but the dress does lose a little something.  Still nice though.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3JSTXMWWVZN2QNP2UEKJMTWD7U Isabel

Disagree! I like the shorter length for her!

          • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Me too! If she had left it long it would have looked dowdy. Putting the dress above the knee improved it immensely.

  • SpcilK

Jadore! Her hair is chic and she looks stylish and beautiful.

    • kimmeister

I just thought about sending this post to my hairstylist for my next hairdo . . .

  • abfidy

Where has she been? I feel like I haven’t seen her since 2003. She looks fantastic though, especially considering that apparently the last time I saw her she was ten years younger.

  • Judy_J

I love this dress in the longer length.  She should have kept the extra inches and covered that boo-boo on her knee.

  • Patricia Gillett

Adorable. And I think the shorter length works on her! She’s not model-tall. And if you’re wearing a diva-print, you need diva hair. That is diva hair! Bravo!

  • janedonuts

    Is that a wig?

  • Sue_Asponte

The skinned knees are adorable too. She’s a girly girl who plays hard.

    • http://twitter.com/TheRedZavodnik Ginger

I totally agree.  As an avid mountain biker, I often come into work with banged up legs and arms.  Dare I say that it’s a badge of honor?

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

It looks like she had it shortened by removing a tier from the runway version, and it makes it the perfect length for her!

  • lunulaoblongata

She’s adorable but that dress is wearing her, not the other way around.  It’s too big on top and needs that extra tier on the bottom.

    • lovelyivy

Disagree about the tier- I think it would make it look like she was playing dress-up in her Mom’s closet- but I totally agree about it being too big on top. I think this is just too much dress for her.

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

That’s a beautiful dress, and she looks really good in it.  Love her hair, hate her shoes.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/XX3UUXUSBZGZQ4MKNADAMYTADE Mrs

I think if she’d left the third ruffle on, the dress would have been more balanced, and we wouldn’t see her skinned knee.

  • alyce1213

I want to like this look, I really do.  The silhouette is great for her and it’s quite flattering, but I can’t get behind that red and black print.  It screams cheap holiday table runner to me.  I’d love to see it in a nicer fabric.

  • MilaXX

Glad you mentioned the hair. It does look great and Mena sometimes leans toward hair styles that look a bit too mature for her. Full on WERQ!

  • BazoDee

I give it a lowercase werq because the length is just off.

  • cluecat

It’s too short.  She should have gone full flamenco.

  • erinbinek

I think the length helps the dress look younger and more stylish.  The longer length looks dowdy to me.  I think it’s the perfect dress, perfect hair.  Is it weird that I thought it was Heidi Klum at first?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bethany-Roullett/100000413803142 Bethany Roullett

No!  I thought the same thing myself.  In fact, I don’t like the hair so much BECAUSE it makes her look so much like Heidi.

  • http://needtherapy.tumblr.com/ skadi1

Aha! I knew there were tailors in LA. Mena Suvari’s stylist obviously found someone to take that bottom flounce out (okay, probably someone at Tadashi Shoji), and the dress is much improved on her.
I like the black stockings. Must be due to my 90s coming of age.

  • Sara__B

She looks fabulous, except for those beat-up blotchy legs. Lovely sheer hose would have made this perfect.

  • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

That is way too nice a dress to waste on such a silly excuse for a movie.

  • ccm800

    nice!

  • Cheri Lee

    She is owning this shit!!

  • bellafigura1

Wow.  GREAT hair, she looks like she’s loving it, and every gesture and move communicate that.  You’re right, the dress is a softball, but So. What.

  • Daenyx

Love the dress!  …and the scrape on her knee, after seeing so much photoshop, is kind of endearing.

  • Kate4queen

Love Tadashi Shoji :) Have lots in my closet. :)

  • JMansm

I feel a deep sense of shame when I disagree with you guys but I REALLY hate her hair. I love that dress (it was one of my favourites from that collection) but I think that that hair looks like it belongs to a 1990′s weather woman and she could use some jewelry and more interesting (not black) shoes.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I thought the hair was very helmet-y – and in keeping with her taste for overly mature looks!

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

OMG ME TOO!  I hate that hair.  And the dress length makes her legs look stubby.  And who allows themselves to have a giant scab on their knee if they are planning to show said knee to photographers?  Wha?

  • DominoEstella

um, sorry guys but she has helmut head.  She looks good except for the hair.

  • EEKstl

Agree except she could have used stronger makeup IMO.

  • another_laura

I love this dress and I like the longer length, with the third tier.  Balances the top. Love the runway look altogether.

For me, not a WERQ but a job well done.

  • quiltrx

This dress is FANTASTIC–and she looks happy and pretty.  If you’d asked me if I thought I’d like a red-over-black lace dress, I would have certainly said no.  But here it is, and it’s lovely.

    • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

Right? Red lace over black instantly makes me think of cheap, tawdry, ugly lingerie. But here it is, looking fabulous.

  • TieDye64

Cute as hell. The hair is gorgeous.

  • Little_Olive

The hair is doing most all the heavy lifting . Kudos to whoever made the alterations because the dress could have totally swallowed her -although I agree that a couple inches more may have done wonders for her knees.
    The shoes make me sad.

  • Terence Ng

The bottom’s okay, but I frickin’ LOVE the top on her. GIRL.

  • DebbieLovesShoes

Love it.  If I had a body like that, I’d wear it to everything.  Adorbs.

  • PeaceBang

I hate the dress on her. It looks stiff and fussy. And her hair looks like a wig.

  • BrooklynBomber

LOVE this on the model. Like but don’t love it on MS. Needs the added length. But, damn, what a great dress.

  • http://profiles.google.com/beckygsayers becky sayers

    Yes “WERQ”ers Compensation!!! :)

  • Sara LaBatt

Appropriate for Spain, looks a little like a shortened flamenco style dress to me.  I think she looks lovely and from one mom with skinned knees to another, “you go girl”.

  • ballerinawithagun

If you have an Owie you need to wear stockings or a longer skirt.

  • http://annequichante.wordpress.com/ Anne

I love when stars look really comfortable in what they’re wearing.  Plus I would wear that dress.  It’s gorgeous!

  • http://twitter.com/Kikishua CMS

I feel as if the shoes are a mite too high, for her and this itteration of the dress.  She looks like she’s balancing.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

    Great dress and great hairdo!

  • pepper76

Love this. I love that she kept the hair and makeup clean and fresh. It makes it modern. WERQ!

  • jw_ny

Love it.  So much better for her, and her tiny frame, to get rid of the extra tier/length.  Busy dress..smart to keep the rest simple.

  • http://twitter.com/BMoke28 Bernadette Moke

I want her hair!!! But I think black stockings would make this look to dark and an outfit better suited for winter.

  • bluefish

Her knee does really look banged up.  Hate the shoes on her.  Stockings needed!  From “American Beauty” to “American Pie.”  Kinda sad.

  • Laylalola

Invest in kneepads, dear. But otherwise, she’s a knockout here.

  • lilibetp

Wasn’t anyone carrying a box of Bandaids in case she fell off the stilts?

  • http://twitter.com/katshimmers Kat Wright

    Awesome!

  • H3ff

Girl is looking like Heidi Klum’s younger twee sister.

  • Annabelle Archer

Mena has that whole multiple personalities dressing style, a la Chloë Sevigny.  I’m always wondering who she’s playing the role of that photo op day.

  • TheOriginalLulu

Love it! She looks head-to-toe gorgeous.
Stand like a lady, Suvari. Otherwise, WERQ!

  • SapphoPoet

I like the runway version better–seems more dramatic to me. But she does look good, minus the skinned knee.

  • TSkot

Great dress, but clearly you’ve loosened your standards for what constitutes WERQ! material.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

She looks fantastic.  Love the hair and makeup, and covet that dress!

  • tsid2012

Huh, she looks pretty but I can’t get behind a WERQ here.  And that hair should look good, it looked good in “Sixteen Candles 30 years ago on the rich cheerleader type.  What was here name? Caroline? And then it got caught in the door jamb and cut off…..

  • http://twitter.com/carelessriver Cassie L

She looks great until the hem of the dress reveals her beautiful, athletic legs. Then it’s like they cut her in two, shrunk her top half, and stuck it back on.

  • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

A-lines always flattering. I like the pink lips, too, better than the model’s blaze of red.

  • http://www.facebook.com/tom.r.markiewicz Tom Markiewicz

i think her hair and make-up look great, but that’s about it; the dress makes her look blocky and thick through the legs/hips, which she isn’t.

  • Sophie Collier

Such a dramatic dress and shoe.  I think the black hosiery worked better than pasty legs.

  • Susan Crawford

GO, Mena! You look so good! Great haircut, fun pose (so tired of the crossed leg potty-pose), and fun shoes. And she smiles! Lovely.

  • KathKo

how original : a flamenco dress for a premiere in Madrid.
Nice, but I lke the runway version better.

  • lilazander

LOVE the dress, and she looks smashing!

  • OneTwoThreeFashion

    very pretty

  • http://twitter.com/KarolFigueroaA Karol Figueroa

    She looks perfect. Great dress.
