WERQ: Leelee Sobieski in Jil Sander

Posted on April 18, 2012

We doubt we’re going to be met with much agreement on this one, but that’s never stopped us before.

Leelee Sobieski attends the 11th Annual Tribeca Film Festival Vanity Fair Party in Jil Sander.

Jil Sander Spring 2012 Collection

Very few ladies could reasonably pull off wearing this dress without attempting to zhuzh it up with belts and jewelry, but this kind of dramatic starkness works really well with her. We’re a bit annoyed that she copied the runway hairstyle exactly, but we have to admit, it goes with the feel of the dress. It’s a strikingly simple look that suits her to a T.

You WERQ that “Little Nurse on the Prairie” shit, girl.

Nurse on the Prairie!  So true.

  • Wait, and you called Elizabeth Olsen a Sister Wife?

  • Bride on the bottom, housewife on the top, and a stain waiting to happen from collar to hem.

    • TheOriginalLulu

Man, it would take me about 3.5 seconds to get some sort of stain on that dress.

      • Sam

A dress like that, just looking at it causes a stain to happen on it.

      • formerlyAnon

Only one of many (many, many, MANY), reasons why nobody’s ever going to make a buck selling my photos to the papers.

  • lilibetp

    Where’s the veil and bouquet?

  • I like everything but the hair, it does nothing for her.

    • TheOriginalLulu

Me too. I agree that this dress is hard to pull off, but she looks good. Hair and makeup are terrible, though.

  • I love it. She looks fresh and light, as if the wind might carry her off at any moment.

  • Sobaika Mirza

WERQ! So striking. I can think only of Tilda Swinton as being able to make this happen.

  • Fancy nurse.

  • Nurse at Prom. HATE the hair. but you’re right, girl can pull it off.

  • MilaXX

Like the dress, not crazy about the hair.  The dress give a bit of a Grace Kelly vibe.

    • elizonthelam

Glad to hear that i’m not the only one who sees a bit of the Princess of Monaco in these pictures. With the hair, i like the slicked back elements, i just wish it were tied back into a bun or curled or something at the bottom/back. The magically unmoving bob is unnerving.

  • This is a perfect example of what I think Raf Simons will bring to Dior: achieving drama via silhouette vs decoration.

  • Sophie Collier

I do not get this dress at all.  Is it supposed to look bridal?  Medical?  Cultish?  It’s, uh, very crisp.

  • hac51

I LOVE IT.  It’s totally classic and yet unexpected.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

I do like the dress and she looks lovely in it.  But, generally not a huge fan of all white long dresses like this though – so wedding.  And the hair – not good.  Very unflattering.

  • Love how dramatic this is, and I doubt I’d be able to resist wearing so I could twirl all the time. She clearly loves it too: we so rarely get pictures of her grinning like this.

I hate that she copied the runway hairstyle, especially since it’s horrifically unflattering on her. Also, her make-up was not done with sunlight in mind.

    • Ooooh, we love that. “Her makeup was not done with sunlight in mind.” It sounds so stealth-bitchy; like something the Dowager Countess would say.

      • I love the Dowager Countess. That is a high compliment.

  • I hate her hair, but I love the dress enough to make up for it.  Absolutely gorgeous.

  • hate the hair.

  • Onika K Morris-Alleyne

love the dress, hate the hair

  • Hair’s a little Borg Queen, don’t you think?

  • hughman

I love it. One, she apparently likes this clean minimalist look so good for her for sticking to her guns and two, she doesn’t muck it up with some stylist’s crap thrown on that would dilute the original intention. Throwing on “bright shoes” or a big necklace would really obscure the designer’s intent and that irks me a lot.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

i really like this dress but that comes w/ a caveat:
years ago i used to handsew clothes out of bedsheets & then embroider them, & am pretty sure i made almost exactly the same dress.

  • Hm, don’t think the hair suits her at all…. She sure does look like she’s enjoying wearing that dress, I must say. It’s growing on me.

  • Sister wife chic

  • cmb92191

Instead of nurse, I was thinking crazy diner waitress without the apron.

  • I like it too, even though it makes me think of Helen Hayes in “A Farewell to Arms.”  Don’t really like the hair, however.

  • She’s such a beautiful woman! And I like the dress.

  • sekushinonyanko

I really like it, and I think the casual, shirtwaist styling at the top keeps it from going bridal.

  • Fabulous.

  • Little_Olive

    Man, that model is mad.

I get the point, and I want to love it but something stops me. Kudos for the originality though.

  • Liz

    love it

  • Aly Light

I’ve always liked her, and it’s good to see her looking decent for the first time in a while. I’m with you, TLo.

  • Hate hate hate the runway hair. So on the nose.  And I think she needs ONE bangle to fend off the prom-nurse vibe.

  • WERQ to the gown, but the hair… sweetie, That’s Not Your Do.

  • Pants_are_a_must

    Alien Grace Kelly.

I would’ve loved the look, had it not been for the hair.

  • I am a huge Jill Sanders fan, so therefore I am incredibly excited by anyone wearing her and when they look fantastic while doing it more power to them, you keep WERQing Leelee!

  • VicksieDo

If this dress were mine, I’d wear it every day…or a week until I spilled something on it.  LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • girliecue

You’d make it through a week before spilling something on it?? I’m in serious awe!!! I can only daydream about wearing this dress for about 5 minutes because that’s how long it would take me to sully it. I bow down to your coordination skills!

      • VicksieDo

That’s my track record with all white garments.  Then I’ll bleach it out and keep wearing them because I love me some all white dresses, sigh.

  • Kyle Crawford

did not like it at all this morning when I saw the first photo of it, but these with the skirt flared , I sort of love it. Maybe pushing ” summer in the city ” a couple of months, and not sure a bracelet would have hurt, but seems most fashion forward to me. Some real hits and misses over all.. loved Wendi Murdoch and Ivanka Trump ( two names I never like ) and think its sweet that Helena Christensen and Katie Couric could swing by while they were out running errands. Julia Louis-Dreyfus has a painting of herself in her attic that looks like hell, just saying…..

  • Hate both the dress and the hair. The skirt on the dress is okay but that top is awful. It looks like a uniform top. I had 12 years of Catholic school. If you changed the color to light blue and shortened the hem a little, I spent most of those years in this dress.

  • The runway version of the dress doesn’t have a collar, which I think makes it look more modern and less like she’s swimming in a fifties’ shirt-dress. Overall, I like it. I like seeing fuller skirts as an option.

  • Wendi126

She looks a little Amish girl selling pretzels at Reading Terminal Market (shout-out to Philly peeps) but I do love it.

    • momogus

Ha ha ha! Obscure but accurate reference! (now thinking about those yummy pretzels……)

    • formerlyAnon

I guess that as a foodie tourist I’m an underachiever – but I’ve been there twice, it was Sunday both times, and there were no Amish. (Not that we had ANY problem finding something good to eat . . .)

  • jw_ny

I saw this earlier today on another site…thought she looked amazing!  I was curious to see what/if TLo would say about this.

Leelee has been missing the mark so often…it’s good to see her hit it finally.  good for her!   🙂

  • joe_tey83

Pretty. And, for once, she’s actually smiling instead of sulking. She looks like a totally different person.

  • The dress is great, the hair is awful. Truly, truly awful.

  • Violina23

She reminds me of one of those paper fashion dolls.

  • Jaclyn Semple

Striking and chic, but what’s really selling it for me is how obviously good she feels in the dress. I’m so used to seeing her with a dour expression on the RC I almost didn’t recognize her. However, I think a not-too-severe chignon would be a vast improvement over the alien helmet hair she’s sporting.

    I want this dress.

  • She looks amazing. Minimalist, yet dramatic. That hairstyle is really weird, though.

    • H3ff

Clearly she was going for the full runway look…

  • StrandedFashionista

    LOVE! SO chic.

  • Agree about the hair, but she does look gorgeous!

  • Anathema_Device

She even copied the runway model’s hairstyle? that’s a little odd.

I should love this. I adore shirtwaist dresses and minimalist style. But this isn’t doing it for me. It could be because I just spent the past few weeks making 7 Ku Klux Klan costumes for a high school drama production and all I can see when I look at this is Ikea white sheets.

If I never see an Ikea white sheet again, it will be too soon.

    • formerlyAnon

But you have (yet again) done your part to enrich the lives of those who will be in charge of the planet when we’re all doddering. I thank you.

      • Anathema_Device

  • shopgirl716

    Love it.

  • TheLaurenJean

Hair is extra hiddy. But the dress is gorgeous.

  • marilyn

Absolutely horrible.  The top does not match the bottom (a recurring problem from PR last season.  Camp shirt on top, ball gown on bottom.  This hybrid dress does a disservice to both styles.

  • Lina_bee

She’s drowning in it, which is a feat given how statuesque she is. I think the dress demands a ton more attitude than she’s able to project. As for the dress itself, I hate the nurse-bodice but I like the basic idea, I think, maybe? At least it’s different.

  • kikisayshi

Like the dress. HATE the hair.

  • I actually love it! I think it could have used a little something at the waist, but I still think it looks great on her.

  • I absolutely LOVE IT. It feels a bit “Roman Holiday” to me and that is just fabulous.

  • lrhoff

Right ON!!  This is fabulous on her, and she is definitely the only one who comes to mind to pull it off….perhaps Tilda?  Anyway, good call on this one, as she looks stunning.

  • jilly_d

no, no, no.  needs a belt and a bracelet in a bad way, and that hair/makeup took a striking and beautiful face and made it look like a tree trunk.

  • Sara__B

The dress is lovely — simple and elegant — and she looks great in it, but that hair is horrible! Not flattering at all.

  • guest2visits

This would have been such a great WERQ- if only she had done something wonderful with the hair.
It would have given some relief to the expansive plain whiteness.

  • Little known fact, Howard Hughes’ nurses wore this exact uniform.  When Hughes gave into his tendency to get a bit grabby with the staff, the full skirt served as needed protection against Hughes’ three inch long fingernails. He also demanded hourly performances of “I Feel Pretty” and, wearing this, the nurses often did.

  • Sam

I don’t care for it. It’s looks like the test garment you make to check the fit before you start using the decent fabric.

    • mmc

Agreed.  Not a WERQ for me.  I mean, I really don’t like it.

  • A wedding shirt-dress?  Oy.

  • All she needs is a pair of the A-Morir sunglasses to offset the sea of white.

  • SusiePamudji

  • Judy_S

Oh, she’s getting married! Such a pretty bride!

  • Corsetmaker

I like the idea of it but it really needs something to anchor the waist. It looks like the weight of the skirt would make the waist twist and shift about. And it just needs… something.

  • Skin tone + hair color + lipstick–yeeeuuuccchhh. Add that “take a white Gap shirt and 20 yards of white muslin and make something fabulous!” Project Runway nightmare, and this is a major fail. She looks like a Zombie.

  • RebeccaKW

I love the dress and she looks good in it.  I do not like the hair, plus I don’t think the lipstick is her color.

  • Louise Bryan

A cross between a (bygone days) nurse’s uniform and a wedding dress.  Odd.  I’m glad nurse’s don’t have to dress like the top half of that gown anymore.

  • nannypoo

There is nothing here that I like. The hair is even worse than the dress. Hideous from top to bottom. In spite of all that, she seems to be having a good time. I guess it’s possible to WERQ a truly ugly look.

  • Isy

I like the dress! But hair and makeup serve to make her look a little alien, no?

  • How fantastic. The hair doesn’t do it for me, mostly because you can see the comb marks, but the cut of this is perfect. Bridal? Geez, can people see beyond a color?

  • formerlyAnon

Little Nurse on the Prairie? Are you kidding? This is Uptown/Downtown, Cooler than Ice Cubes, Grace Kelly!

    WERQ is right!

  • Hate the hair! Looks a little bit like a weird helmet.

    Otherwise, it’s a gorgeous look.

  • Gorgeous dress, and it does work on her, quite well…but I think it would be *better* with a belt.

And get rid of that cootie garage hair.

  • Sorry Guys. Just can’t get past the nurse top. Not a win for me. Hair and make-up a strike out as well. Lips way too red. Hair too much like Darth Vader’s Helmet,

  • Stefanos Mantyla

I am total agreement over this WERQ, even if the bodice appears a bit wrinkled.

  • TieDye64

She’s mostly pulling it off. It’s certainly better than 99% of what she normally wears.

  • crash1212

I love that dress! Not crazy about the hair – on LeeLee or the model. I wouldn’t have been able to resist doing a belt, though. Kudos!

  • Veronica1022

I get a Mormon Bride vibe from that.

  • She looks like a RC nurse, but she does wear it well.

  • librarygrrl64

A bit bridal nurse, but its simplicity suits her to a T.

  • BuffaloBarbara

Sorry guys–not on board.  This looks like a floor-length polo shirt, and the hair was bad on the model, and worse on Leelee.

  • Pannyx

  • Jessica sabat

  • Sara__B

There’s nothing like a twirly skirt to make a girl happy. It’s even made the usually grim Leelee Sobieski smile and dance!

  • Sara Leigh Merrey

    The hair is horrible.

  • My only complaint is it looks a bit high waisted from the front but i think it is very striking and i really like the skirt.

  • Snailstsichr

I think she looks fun and fresh. I’m getting Grace Kelly dressed up as a nurse vibes.

I hope she stuck to white wine.

  • Joyce VG

Breathtaking!  (except for the hair. it looks weird.)

  • Jennifer Coleman

I can’t get past the George Washington hair.

  • Magatha

I think it’s beautiful: crisp yet floaty, voluminous but neat. Is it nurse-y? I suppose,a little, and I know I wouldn’t like it if she accessorized with a cardigan or bright blue nitrile exam gloves, but she didn’t do either of these things. The hair is a little weird, but I like that it’s swept back severely. It all looks really good on her because her features are strong and dramatic.

Okay, it might be because I am so tired of strapless stuff with cutouts all over the place, or those bandage dresses. The only thing missing from this look is the valet who must accompany Leelee at all times to lift her over puddles and parking lot schmutz, and to throw him or herself between her and a toppling glass of merlot.

  • unbornfawn

Business on the top. Party on the bottom.

  • another_laura

    Yes yes yes!

  • This looks so good on her, and it’s great to see her doing what any girl would do in a dress like that…TWIRL!  But the hair, is a bit scary, way too severe.

  • uprightcitizen

It’s perfect. If you’re a nurse who’s getting married right after her shift and doesn’t have time to change. It’s pure uniform up-top, and pure wedding or Quinceanera below. A chunky necklace and a thick leather belt would have made this kind of summer chic (but it still would be better at tea length even then … with some sandals?), but this just looks odd to me. And the Robert Palmer video hair is fugly (IMHO).

    • alyce1213

What you said.  I’d have preferred it tea length and accessorized. it’s just too much dress.

  • Gorgeous!

  • alyce1213

Hate hate hate the hair.  It looks stiff and dirty.
Mixed feelings on the dress — maybe it’s just too much white cotton.  I think she could have used some jewelry or accessory; she is not exempt.
What is that horizontal indentation across her boobs?  A dress seam or bad undergarment?

  • kimmeister

Love the dress, probably because I have a similar one that is sleeveless and wrapped.  The hair is ghastly though.

  • Sarah Thomas

See, this is remarkably similar to my dream wedding dress, which might be while I’m having such a nauseous reaction to the ODLR post.

  • Call me Bee

Love this look, but a belt woulda been good….

  • lonepear

    Hell yes.

Hair just okay. Smile more than makes up for it.

  • 3boysful

It’s actually a tiny bit Grace Kelly.  But the hair’s ridiculous.

  • momogus

It’s an awesome dress, and she looks pretty and fresh (though I do not like the hair), but it reads overwhelmingly bridal to me.

  • nancymae

I can’t get “The hills are alive…” out of my head now. This is very Von Trapp family to me.

  • I am with you, I love this. I think she should get this dress in like 20921092 different colors and wear one every day

  • sk8tfan

Calling it “Little Nurse” insults nurses everywhere, most of whom are better groomed on a much lesser budget.

  • ccm800

The short sleeve version of the Rachael Wood number. CUTE! Werq agreed.

  • butter nut

she’s the *only* woman who can werq this

  • DominoEstella

  • Google “modest wedding gowns” and you’ll find plenty just like this.  They market them to fundamentalist sects and Morman’s.

  • mslewis

I know Jil Sander is “minimalist” but this dress is crying out for SOMETHING!! Maybe a little red or blue or black (really tiny) belt.  I know jewelry wouldn’t work but that thing needs something on it somewhere.  And couldn’t LeeLee’s stylist think up another hair style?

  • Dejah_Thoris

Actually, I rather love it. Although, I have never gotten her appeal, and I don’t love the hair.

  • berkeleygirl

STUNNING… Sobieski likes to take fashion chances, rarely with any success.  This is a triumph.  Maybe it wouldn’t work for an awards-show/Cannes red carpet, but it’s gorgeous on the steps of the Met.

  • ballerinawithagun

Nurse on the Prairie! The skirt is fabulous though.

  • Sorry  but I hate it.

  • nycfan

I love this dress but you have me conditioned to cry out for a pop of color with maybe a slim, red belt as the singular embellishment.

    • juliamargaret

Yes, me too. It could be teeny tiny, but I would have loved to see it. Maybe red might push the nurse-thing to far, but just about any color would be welcome.

Also not a fan of the hair.

  • MmmmmmmmK

It makes her look very pretty, which is a nice change from her usual dour, suffering countenance. She looks fresh and young, which is what a good dress should do. It’s odd though, because the dress is rather homely. It’s the thin-short-sleeved-cotton-blend-shirt-with-a-clip-on-tie version of a red carpet dress.

  • Hate the hair.  Love the dress.

  • Diner waitress as bride

  • The only designer I like less than Stella McC is Jil Sander…. *le sigh*

  • she looks ridiculous. the HAIR is ridiculous.

  • PeaceBang

“Nurse Betty Gets A Very Big Skirt.” Starring Leelee. I think she coulda rocked the dress under different HAIR and make-up circumstances and some … something.

  • iambilljr

Davids Bridal for the Cafeteria Lady

  • CozyCat

I love it.  It’s sort of the “anti Marchesa” look.

  • She looks amazing I don’t think I have ever seen her look so beautiful.

  • quiltrx

She looks gorgeous and looks like she FEELS gorgeous, which is the most important thing!

(I would have a stain on that before I even got INTO the car to go there.)

  • TheOtherChristina

If I could get past the hair and the inverted boobs (seriously, wtf) I might like it. But I guess I’ll never know.

  • Is she getting married? What’s going on here? It looks like sister wife bridal.

  • sleah_in_norcal

i seriously thought she was wearing a nurses uniform when i first saw the snapshot.  she’s so beautiful but i hate the hair.

  • TheDivineMissAnn

Nurse Betty goes to the prom, sporting a Nurse Cratchett (sp) hairstyle.

  • That’s a hellofalot of dress there! It goes on and on and on. I hate her hair so much I can’t even really comment on the dress.

  • plinkiedoodle

Okay, I guess I can dig that Sister-Wife meets Steppford Wife look…

  • TSkot

WERQ???  Only if it’s a misspelling of UGLY!!!

  • marciekr

Really?  The dress looks like it was made from bed sheets.  Totally, totally OUT.

  • Looks like a dervish dancer. Like the makeup, but OUT.

  • crackineggs

    Love it.

  • ChristySchiff

A WERQ?  I don’t understand.  I’ve been to all the lectures, done my homework and even showed up for the extra credit lab, but I’m not seeing how you got that answer.  I’m going to have to repeat this semester.

  • RzYoung

Weird, I love it. I have high hopes for Leelee 🙂

  • Beardslee

I like it!  Skirt is lovely and the top is casual and tailored enough not to be bridal.   And it is refreshingly free of vulgarity.

  • fursa_saida

This is eerily reminiscent of ERW’s Dramatic White Shirtdress look from back when. IIRC, that look was what really put her on the map for the Bitter Kittens. I wonder if LeeLee Sobs did it on PURPOSE.

  • poggi

It looks like too much volume for her when she is walking in that first picture, in the rest while she is standing or posing in it, I really like it.  This is the rare dress that looks better still than in motion.  She looks pretty and simple and classy and dramatic.  Not an easy combo.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

    She looks unusual and lovely.

  • I could get behind it if it wasn’t for the hair.  I wouldn’t even mind if she had copied it from the model, except that it looks ridiculous on both of them.

  • M Carlson

No, I agree! I loved its simplicity.

  • Verascity

I also love that dress, but I HATE her hair. Like, viscerally.

  • PeggyOC

Sorry, nope. I was on the fence until you provided the runway picture.  That hairstyle doesn’t suit her and the fact that she seems to have deliberately chosen it to match the runway?  Pushes this into an out. (I know, we’re not voting, but I’m voting in my head).  She does look like she feels pretty, so points for that.

  • sagecreek

Oh, I like it! The shirtwaist top keeps it from being too bridal. Go, Leelee!

  • Can’t believe she did her hair exactly like the runway model. Lame.

  • Judy_J

I love this dress, and you know who else would look great in it?  Sarah Jessica Parker.

  • M

    Betty Draper on acid.  NO.

  • CQAussie

I really hate her hair.  It looks like a slick down helmet/mullet.  The dress, I’m torn.  Hate the top, love the skirt.  But overall, it’s leaning fug than anything else.

    • BerlinerNYC

Yes. She looks like she is fighting the G-forces. Like her styling involved putting in a bunch of product and then driving to the event at top speed with the top down.

  • I’ve Got Rocks In My Bed

She’s going to the annual Boresville, PA  “QUAKERS IN FASHION” event. Local mega celebs from all over will be there from Father Willy Dell to Brother Jonas Pete.

  • EmilyMullasWilson
  • I bet Peter Dinklage is hiding under that big ol white swing skirt.

  • It’s Jil Sander, of course it’s chic.

  • bellafigura1

She loves the way she looks.  So do I (hair exception).

  • ThaliaMenninger

The hair makes her look like Dumbo. I’m not feeling this look.

  • didn’t you guys give Evan Rachel Wood a WERQ for this exact same outfit a couple months ago when she was pole-dancing for The Ides of March?

  • Sweetvegan

This dress is incredibly beautiful. I pinned it.

  • watchmeboogie

Yikes, I’m in the minority but I hate this dress. It’s a nurse’s uniform with bedsheets sewn to it. Yuck.

  • Judih1

HIDDY. not even a sisterwife or nurse could make that work. Hair is horrible

  • bitterk

Seriously a werq?  I couldn’t wait to scroll down to see the two of your tear nurse ratchet to shreds.  She looks silly.

  • Danae

It takes a brunette, like the model, to help this read well. The dress is wearing her.
