T Style Magazine: Salad Days

Posted on April 13, 2012

Darlings, here’s your pretty for the day. And by “pretty,” we mean, “pretty damn crazy.”

“Salad Days” photographed by Richard Burbridge and styled by Robbie Spencer for New York Times Style Magazine.

Dolce&Gabbana Spring 2012 Collection

Sure, we get why they took some of the food-themed looks from the spring collections and just turned the dials up to 11, but the fish? We don’t get that one at all. Oh well. Look at the pretty dresses.

Oh, PLEASE tell me that’s not a real raw fish in her mouth. My inner germophobe is about to vomit in terror.

    • MilaXX

      Pretty sure it’s Photoshopped.

I still like the D & G dresses. I would love that orangey red for the summer.

      • norseofcourse

        Ditto on the orange D & G.

       I found that photo horrifying.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

         Agreed. Its grotesque.
BTW, totally off topic.  Do you need me to suss anything special out for you a’ Paris?

        • Anathema_Device

Ah, you are too kind. If you find or do anything off the beaten track, I’d love to know about it. I’ve been once before, but a long time ago. Our kids kind of want to do some touristy stuff, as you could imagine, but otherwise we’re taking the same approach that you are: just being in Paris and enjoying the food and atmosphere! I’d love to hear about any fabulous outings or food spots. I have a hunch I’m not going to get the chance to shop much, unless my daughter and I beg off on the day trip to the D Day beaches my son and husband want to do. Now, shouldn’t you be packing, Mister?! Hee..have so much fun!

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Wow, the D Day beaches?  Really?  Okay.  Sounds like a perfect excuse to beg off, and go looking at all the stuff we can’t afford, but want anyhow.  Packing?  Mostly done.  I will put the stacks of folded stuff in my bags at the last.  It’ll take all of 5 minutes to finish and zip it up.  5:30 is going to come around FAST.  Its an early night for this Bitter Kitten. Trust me on this, I WILL be coming back with tales of food and such to share.

          • formerlyAnon

            Bon voyage!

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Merci Anon!  Rendez-vous quand je reviendrial!

          • Eclectic Mayhem

Sorry to butt in but – if you’ve not seen it, and even if you have – Versailles is extraordinary and well worth the wee train trip.

          • Anathema_Device

No worries about butting in. Love the tips. We are planning to go to Versailles. The kids are really interested in seeing it…which is why I don’t want to do yet another day trip to the WWII sites. We’ll only have 7 full days that aren’t also travel days, so I don’t want to be outside of Paris too much!

          • Michael Wightman

Versailles really is lovely, but its a day trip as it is outside of Paris.  Skip Notre Dame and the Louvre and go see St. Chappelle Cathedral (the pinnacle of Gothic architecture…take the tour.  The instruction on the bldg. will change everything!) and the D’Orsay.  And there’s a Picasso museum hidden inside a courtyard….fabulous.  After shopping, go the the Pompadeau (sp?).  It’s like the MOMA of Paris, but the restaurant on the top floor (Georges) has the best view of the entire city, a ridiculously beautiful and well manicured staff, and is a great place to see and be seen.
            Bon Voyage!

          • SapphoPoet

Also, go up the Eiffel Tower at night–that’s when you can really see the City of Light.

          • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

            Also, do not miss Montmartre.

    • TheDivineMissAnn

And there are fish in her hair too!  What really makes me shiver (me timbers?) are the octopi on her shoulders.

      • PaulaBerman

That made me the most sick. Poor octopuses! They’re my favorite animal. They deserve better.

    • http://korilian.livejournal.com/ korilian

I’ll believe that they’ll make a model put a raw fish in her mouth, but never that they’ll allow that same fish to get near a thousand dollars couture dress :).

      • MK03

        Ah, that’s a good point.

    • Louise Bryan

It made my daughter and me squeal in horror and terror.  And ick!

    • Sally Brownson

As if people don’t eat raw fish all the time…?

  • Maria Rosenfire

This, my friends, is the kind of fantastically gorgeous crazy I can get behind. Though I do feel sorry for the models if they had to sit around with various raw comestibles draped on their persons for hours on end.

    • BayTampaBay

I must agree with Rosenfire, this ediotorial is a kind of fantastically gorgeous crazy I wish we saw more of.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/4KLZGI7NMQE2LQDYYSMPFXANW4 Uche

At first sight the pink runway Viktor and Rolf made me gasp with delight. Then I looked at it more and thought cupcakey. And prom-like

    • Verascity

I think it looks much better with that shirt, from what I can see in the photo.

    • buildmeatower

At least with Viktor and Rolf it’s easy to believe that they /meant/ for her to look like a walking cupcake tower.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

it looks way better, i think, in this editorial than it does on the runway. it needs the sleeves. odd. it does not, however, need the marshmallows & yoghurt mess strewn & slopped all over it. i’m assuming it costs more than at least a month of my rent–& i am in los angeles where rent is not low.

agree w/ meattower re viktor & rolf’s intentions.

      edited to add:
the jordan almonds, too. it needs the jordan almonds. i didnt even realize they were jordan almonds until just now.
      as per:
did you know you can eat twenty year old jordan almonds w/o getting sick? & that they taste about the same? i found a box my mother gave me at least twenty years before i found it. it was never opened, i dont think, so i opened it & they looked very fresh. not really concerned w/ my own mortality, i tried one. then i tried another [this was during a time i was eating]. i love jordan almonds, btw. & tastewise, i gotta say, there was very little difference between those boxed in the 1980s & those boxed, say, last thursday.

  • joe_tey83

Some of them you can’t even tell there’s a dress there. It looks like they are being attacked by garbage.

  • Anathema_Device

AAARRGGHHH! GAAAAAAH! That fish photo! That AND Melody Thorton in the same day? I know it is Friday the 13th, but dayummm…

I don’t think this all that imaginative of a shoot. “Hey, let’s take the inspiration for the dress and load it up onto the actual dress!”

  • norseofcourse

It looks like one of those inane, improbable photo shoots on ANTM.

    • joe_tey83

And, if a contestant refuses to put a raw fish in her mouth and smize or bite into a rotten fruit, Tyra would sent her home.

    • http://profiles.google.com/ameliaheartsu Amelia Logan

    • solastalgia

Came here to say this. It’s basically an ANTM shoot.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=564839755 Jillian Liszewski

That was my first thought.  Every time Tyra has them do something batshiz crazy, I end up seeing it in the real world.  CRAZY.

  • http://profiles.google.com/lyzawhitney Lyza M.

As a high raw vegan, I’m loving and would wear a couple of these dresses (the tomato one and the eggplant one–minus all the additional “styling”).  Everything else…kind of freaks me out.  I don’t really see a lot of creativity in this also, to be honest.  It kind of just seems like an obvious play to me, to style the models in whatever food the dress happens to remind them of.

  • schadenfreudelicious

The fish photo is truly gag worthy, literally and figuratively…

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

All the clothes are spectacular.  I take that back.  The first up, Dolce&Gabbana is way too short, and has weird proportions.  My fave? The Armani dress is a stunner, and a classic any woman of means could wear forever. However, some of the styling goes too far, and obscures the clothes to the point of near invisibility.  The Donna Karan  utterly mystifies me.  Where IS the outfit?

  • http://twitter.com/mirrormirrorxx Paola Thomas

I bet the people trying to sell the clothes were DELIGHTED with this shoot.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Snorting with laughter.  Yep. They all must have done many major eye rolls, and head smacks over this one.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=580241410 Iyad Hilal

Oh i like except for the first one where you can’t even see the dress. Anyway they should have looked at ANTM’s greek salad shoot from last season because that’s how you do a salad themed photoshoot (not really).

  • VicksieDo

The McQueen runway picture is so gorgeous~~~

Fish heads, fish heads, rolly polly fish heads…

    • holdmewhileimnaked

in an act of pure eerie synchronicity i actually watched the video for that today.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

theres a bikini in there somewhere? by missoni? is it the armbands?
theres a dress in their somewhere w/ the bikini? by donna karan? under the spaghetti made out of spiny coral?

i was gonna say i always love it when someone does the arcimboldo thing. then i realized if doing arcimboldo is finally an actual thing, that thing is losing its edge along w/ its luster. ah, too bad.

i am thinking that most of these are largely photoshopped. i dont know, however. i tried to read the article but i am way past my allotted free NYT articles this month & i may even have gone past my put the title into google, do a news search & then click through allotment, which i think is five a day. so i cant find it out from the article, especially if i wanna get back to work. which i do, largely cos i have no choice.

so i dont know how much is real. but i will say, for the model’s sake, i hope those fish were either not there or are made of plastic. also: they have taken some of the most beautiful or at least most wonderous things from recent runways–not to mention that all of them are incredibly expensive. i hope w/ a very fond hope that they really didnt get all that gunk all over them. & i am a fan of gunk, too. but not in this context.

    last note:
every time i see/hear alexis bittar all i can think of are the accessories worn, not to mention proselytized over, by drew droege’s chloë sevigny. all of the videos, i believe, are on youtube but here is the one referencing alexis bittar. every right thinking humanoid owes it to him- or herself to become familiarized w/ these perfect 21st century artefacts– & after those, w/ her compatriot, not martha plimpton:

    in closing,
have a better weekend than me!

  • jw_ny

the epitome of over accessorizing.  😉

  • girliecue

Food, food everywhere and not a bite to eat! A real feast for the eyes, but no thanks to the fishtail in the mouth. Beautifulcrazy that delights my senses. Thanks for a fabulous start to the weekend, T Lo!

  • guest2visits

Loud, ugly, gory, weird and disgusting.  The theme: Garbage Dumpster. Congrat’s New York Times; you win the prize.

  • http://www.facebook.com/fiddlecub Kevin VanOrd

I am so over that McQueen dress.

Otherwise, I rather liked this. I don’t even mind the fish photo–there’s some wit to it, even if the overall effect is grotesque.

  • http://twitter.com/A_SmallFry AC

Didn’t even need to dial up the crazy on that McQueen.

  • hughman

What shopping dyslexia gets you : Trader Clothe’s.

  • Mexxoo

That stylist(s) must feel pretty secure in their positions, considering most of those expensive dresses were probably ruined by all the food on them.  Still, I guess the same thing happens with shoots that happen on the shore or in the water…

  • rawrgrowlrawr

I love the photo of the three Armani models. They look like fairies.

    • another_laura

      yes, the three graces!

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Something tells me Giorgio Armani was having a classical mythology moment.  Can you say, “The Three Graces”?

  • butterflysunita

I don’t really get these fashion editorials that don’t sell or show the clothes at all.  But I did like looking at the photos–they are interesting and sort of strangely beautiful.

  • demidaemon

Oh look! Another ANTM shoot made it into magazines. Also, how the heck are you supposed to know what dresses are being showcased underneath all that crap?

  • JDreesen

well DUH, of COURSE the fish.

    *crickets chirping*…anyone?  no?

and i definitely consider this pretty; i love it when Fashion takes Fashion with a grain of salt (kosher sea salt to go with the theme, i imagine).

  • DCSheehan

All I can think when I see these types of shoots is ‘what a waste of food’.

    • filmcricket

THANK YOU. I really hope it’s all fake food (and I’m assuming it is, because getting all that stuff on couture is a good way to never get couture given to you again, I would guess). But honestly, Roman-Empire-levels of decadence like this disgust and alarm me, and not just because we all know what happened to the Romans.

  • formerlyAnon

I like these more than they deserve, I think.

The orangey-red D&G print is my fave piece of clothing as it has been for several others.  My favorite photo is the fish, though. I’d like it better without the (I hope to GOD plastic or photoshopped) fish in her mouth. The fish roe/sea foam bubbles/pearls neckpiece & octopi epaulettes really work some how.

Overall, props to the probable platoons of exhausted & exasperated food-wrangling assistants and models.

  • NurseEllen

I hope the fish model got extra “hazardous duty” pay for posing with the fish in her mouth.  Either that, or I hope it’s photoshopped.

These photos remind me of those in a cookbook I purchased some years ago.  It’s called “Intercourses” and has some amazing photos, including one of a girl wearing a hula-type skirt made entirely of asparagus spears.  Do a google image search, you’ll see it, and others.  Much more about the food than the fashion, but still reminiscent of those above.  Thanks for jogging my memory on it, TLo.  I’ll have to get it off my shelf for a little pre-bedtime reading!

  • Linderella

Love the clothes on the runway–but the pictures are deranged (and not in a good way).  There’s “edgy” and then there’s just “stoopid.”

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=589163339 Alex Mangus

Gotta give it up to Julia for putting that fish in her mouth!!!!!! They’re both fabulous

  • bellafigura1

I love these — why do you find the fish confusing?  The dress is fish shaped!  All the clothes are phenomenal and I think this is great fun to look at.  Better than mopey, druggy looking women (captives?) in sterile modern houses in the woods.  There a a lot of those!

  • tsid2012

All of this reminds (too much & in a bad way!) of the unfortunate Season 2 “Trueblood” Mynad food/sex/trance love fest.  Ick.

  • librarygrrl64

    That V&R….*shudder*…hideous…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1406341157 Christopher Rogers

I fucking love it.I love how ugly and grotesque it is — so unapologetically non-stereotypically beautiful. Every editorial isn’t about selling the clothing, so I don’t really see how that can be seen as a critique. It reminds me so much of Arcimboldo’s food faces. It’s just genius, in my opinion.

  • ballerinawithagun

    Raw fish in mouth???

I hope the Second Harvest truck was waiting.

  • marilyn

There are some flirty, fun clothes underneath the wacko accessories (including the fish).  Are those models guys?  Is this where Carmen Miranda meets the compost heap?  I am always amazed at the serious money invested in ways to repulse people, instead of enticing them into buying clothes.  Is this a freakshow or a fashion show, or is that the point?

  • cocohall

I believe the styling may be inspired by paintings made in the 1570s by Giuseppe Arcimboldo where faces were composed with foods.

  • Candigirl1968

Odd.  The fish pic is just disturbing, as is the frosting licking one.
I guess this is what we get for bitching about how boring the “girl on whiteboard” pictures from a few days ago were.

  • judybrowni

Pretty dresses: Bring on the cray cray!

Or at least, that seems to be the meaning of that editorial.

  • unbornfawn

The fish thing is weird, but overall I love the crazy. It’s the good kind.

  • anotherkate

Ugh, now I’m even more mad that someone stole my paper this morning! Would have loved to have seen these up close and glossy.

  • MoHub

Where is Chris March? He’s the king of food as clthing.

  • LambeeBaby

It looks scarey fairy, I think they would eat you in your sleep. I am repulsed by the “tomato squeezing salad vomit woman”.

  • Judy_J

That poor model with the fish tail hanging out of her mouth. I hope it was just the tail and not an entire fish!

    • LambeeBaby

If it was the entire fish, she would be VERY popular on the set!

  • Judy_J

That poor model with the fish tail hanging out of her mouth. I hope it was just the tail and not an entire fish!

  • lesmaha

I’m sorry, I need another plain ole “pretty” for my day. This fell into “pretty disturbing”–but may help me out on my diet!

I’m not seeing much creativity or design skills. It’s been done, done, and over-done. And we’ve all seen ‘Carrie’.
I can’t see the appeal or the art; unless it’s supposed to be a horror film.
This was kind of like shooting a food fight that happened about 5 months ago. Ick.

WTF is the point of the first dress if it’s LITERALLY covered by the piles of fruit? I mean, it looks kind of neat, but if you hadn’t done the dress on its own in a picture, I’d never have known.
