Rihanna in Something Else

Posted on April 13, 2012

No, really. That’s the name of the line: Something Else. We hope you didn’t click on this thinking “something else” meant “something other than clothing,” which would be a safe bet with Ri, but  we’re afraid we’ll have to disappoint you this time.

Rihanna leaves Giorgio Baldi restaurant in LA in a Something Else dress.

Something Else Reversible Optic Sweater Dress

Toothache, Ri? Or is that a hand to the face in despair because you just realized how dumb you look? Because we can deal with shapeless sack dresses and we can deal with visible thigh-highs, but we really can’t deal with a shapeless sack dress PLUS visible thigh-highs PLUS open-toed shoes PLUS red toe-tips.  We’re sorry to inform you that your despair in this instance is just good common sense. And that you probably would have looked better if you did have a pounding toothache. You certainly couldn’t look worse.

    • piecesofconfetti

I was prepared to forgive everything else until I got to the red toe tips. Huh?

      • HomeOfficeGirl

Me too – could be cool and funky but the shoes with the tights went too far.

    • BrooklynBomber

And I thought it meant Rihanna in yet another outfit.  The dress is kind of cute on the model, and might be on Rihanna, too, but the leg and foot wear has me completely flummoxed.  But on the bright side, her hair color’s pretty good.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Liz-Norris/26609454 Liz Norris

That’s what I thought it was, too. Like, “Rihanna, AGAIN.”

    • Sobaika Mirza

The shoes are awful but I dig everything else. Starting to love her more and more.

    • http://www.djplaw.com/ Tadiana

If I cross my eyes just right I think I can see the dentist’s drill.  Or maybe it’s the pants she forgot.  At least her hair’s back to her natural black (for the moment).

    • NurseEllen

In the words of Hobson (Dudley Moore’s butler in “Arthur”):  “How revolting.”

And what does this dress reverse to?  Or, on second thought, maybe I really don’t want to know.

    • janetjb

      Love her hair.

Hope she gets to the dentist soon.

    • choco

at least her toes match her lipstick?

    • TaurusKW

I think the red toes are a step too far, but otherwise, I kinda like this look.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Wow. That is a 4 star achievement in WRONG.   And to top everything our lovely hosts opined about, that color is Not. Her. Friend.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sephski Jennifer Szczublewski

Not a good look. Those aren’t thigh-highs though. They’re over-the-knee socks. (See the knees right there under the cuff?) Why she’d wear red-toed (or ANY) socks with open-toed shoes though??? *shudder*

    • Spicytomato1

From the hemline up she looks good (from what I can tell) but all the nonsense on her legs is just too much. If only she’d stuck with the original, longer length of the dress and simpler footwear. So close…sigh.

When I read “Something Else” I initially thought you might be referring to something other than pajamas…her most recent look that I unfortunately can’t seem to wipe away from my overloaded-with-crap memory bank.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

I used to have socks with a red toe.  Then my Nana made a red toe sock monkey with them.

    • Pennymac

      DISPAIR! LOL  Awful!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=847525391 Barbara Lee Woodruff

It would be much cuter with a belt. A belt might even make me forgive the hiddy red toes.

    • Sara__B

She looks somewhat better than the model, red toes and all, which isn’t saying much.

    • Paigealicious

Looks like a walk of shame.

    • Paigealicious

Unrleated but I totally had a dream last night that I met TLo and stayed at their house. And we had a fabulous brunch.

    • http://twitter.com/karenrubyleo Karen

The dress could be cute for casual day wear but everything else is tragic

    • EEKstl

She looks like a crazy lady you’d see outside of Bloomingdale’s muttering to herself. However, I think her hair looks great and I do like that dress, but from the thighs down it’s really so not good.

    • http://www.facebook.com/saefields Sharon Fields

Give her a break looks like a cramp day to me.

    • http://surelysonsy.blogspot.com/ Jessica | Surely Sonsy

i actually kind of like this!  [ducks while things are thrown at her]

      • MilaXX

no throwing here, I like it too.

        • butterflysunita

          I like it too.

      • formerlyAnon

I was liking till I got to the red toes. Threw it off for me. But I can see why you might.

      • Amy Ellinger

agreed!  (but only on Rihanna because she is a bada$$ and I love her)

      • Denny Li

I think it’s cute and sassy.

    • Rebecca Johnson

But that *is* something other than clothing. It’s a Magic Eye brand potato sack and leg-based art homage to Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I kind of want the socks with heels trend to work because it’s surprisingly comfortable.  Unfortunately, every time I’ve tried it I end up looking something like poor Rihanna does here.

    • MilaXX

It’s Rhi Rhi, I actually don’t mind it. It suits her and while I would have preferred a boot with this look I don’t hate it.

    • formerlyAnon

I thought it was a look – maybe not a look for us normal folk, but a Rihanna look – till I got to the red tips of the thigh highs.  In *theory* maybe they were a saucy pop of color (and coordinates nicely with her lipstick), but in practice they’re just one touch of random too far.

    • Heather Galaxy

I like the red toed stockings with the open shoes. I even like it all together. If she was standing straight in this and looking happy, this would be a work for me!

    • Judy_J

I’m OK with the top half of this look.  The dress is kind of cute.  But those red toe socks paired with the open toed shoes…..no.

    • sashaychante

      OH NO, just no.

    • PastryGoddess

      Oh Honey No…just No

    • http://twitter.com/HotMessHousWife Sammi M

Pfft, whatever, this would’ve been the THING back in the 90’s. Hello, it’s totally “Clueless”-style! ;D

    • TieDye64

I could dig the dress on it’s own, but the boots with the red socks tips it over into serious fug territory.

    • http://flippy-doodle.blogspot.com Flippy Doodle

I’m just so happy that she’s back to black hair that EVERYTHING else can be forgiven.

    • PeaceBang

All kinds of ugly. You boys nailed it.

    • Sarah Thomas

I totally thought they were black thigh high boots with red toes. Which doesn’t sound like a terrible idea, but based on this picture actually would be.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Well, I agree about the thigh highs and the red toes, but I think the sweater dress is kinda fabulous.  [Ducking tomatoes]  Not on the model, it just hangs on her, but with Ri’s legs, it looks sexy.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I like the dress, but I don’t get the red toes.  Out.

    • AnaRoW

I like the look in general but I think I’d like it more if she’d just gone with black thigh-high boots.

    • crash1212

This would’ve been full of WIN if she’d been sporting thigh high suede black boots. Silly Ri. Also, I don’t get it…the thigh highs have red toes? Is this a thing now?

    • guest2visits

I do like the dress, I wonder if she just wore black tights; instead of thigh-highs with those shoes.
Once again; how does she sit in it?  Does it border on teen-prostitute; probably. I guess that’s her persona.
I would really like that dress to wear as a tunic-top; it’s too short for anything else.

    • BeeBeauNYC

She could look worse if she had that blond hair back on – at least THAT has gone in the right direction. As for socks and open-toed shoes, did she just go to a sandal convention in Germany?

    • giiiirrrr

I don’t hate this.  Ri Ri’s style is funky and tarty, and this hits both of those squarely.  Besides, I adore it when she shaves one side of her head.  That is just the edgiest, sexiest thing.

    • Anathema_Device

Oh, but I love that hair color. And this look is positively demure for her. Demure, but still a little ridiculous. I think she is contractually bound to wear at least one stupid thing every time she is in public.

    • lonepear

Neck up: gorgeous. Everything else: not working; go home and start over.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I’m always surprised when Ri wears something that is more covered up, but this is a pretty sad look.

    • rawrgrowlrawr

I wear shift dresses, over-the-knee socks and heels a lot, but I’m in college so I’m allowed to wear potentially embarrassing things. I actually like the red toes, but I hate that dress. Ew.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josefina-Madariaga-Suárez/100002964685796 Josefina Madariaga Suárez

Well, she’s a 24 years old pop star, she’s allowed to wear that combo as well.

        • rawrgrowlrawr

Of course she is, but she’s in the public eye so her outfit will undoubtedly be scrutinized. I like this on her, silliness and all. I just don’t like that dress.

          • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josefina-Madariaga-Suárez/100002964685796 Josefina Madariaga Suárez

I don’t know, if I had her bank account, I would be as experimental as she is with my clothes. It’s true, she is in the public eye, but she will have plenty of time to be tasteful and serious with her outfits.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/J2VE4NE2FY2BP4QD2XOYKJGLPI Laura

Well, she looks better than the model

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josefina-Madariaga-Suárez/100002964685796 Josefina Madariaga Suárez

      I… kinda like it.

    • Lilyana_F

      I kinda dig it… *ducking*

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

You know what? I hate those open toed shoes but wearing them with those socks is the best possible thing that could ever happen to them! The thigh-highs look like they are pinching her thighs though.

    • PeggyOC

At first I thought those were a pair of cute boots with red tips, and I was all on board.  Then the horror dawned.  Twitch.

    • jw_ny

looks like a ‘walk of shame’ to me…;)

    • kimmeister

Everything is terrible.  I think visible thigh highs are a no especially when they are visibly digging into your skin.

    • http://twitter.com/TigerLaverada TigerLaverada

She worried about a case of deep vein thrombosis or something? Looks like the stuff I wear on a 16 hour plane flight.

    • Verascity

Wasn’t she in Japan recently? She might have picked this look up here.

    • http://blue-again.myopenid.com/ blue

I think the stockings and shoes are cute. But the dress if fugly.

    • ThaliaMenninger

I’m willing to accept the dress. But I despise those shoes and stockings. Hurl City.

    • http://profiles.google.com/lyzawhitney Lyza M.

I don’t like it either but I can see why she does…she likes to be edgy and put herself out there and different, and she seems to have an affinity for clothing that, knowingly, a lot of people are going to despise.

    • nannypoo

I did not know that TEDS come in black.

    • NCDFan

I thought those were support hose!

    • dya2637

This is truly dreadful, its like Real Housewifes’ cheap pillowcase on top, and 90s Japanese Manga girl on the bottom.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

when i thought those were boots w/ red toe tips i really liked them. not any more though, sadly.
otoh, the dress is from urban outfitters. it costs, i dunno, about $160. theres no reason for her to wear it other than that she likes it. which, considering everything else she gets to wear, is kinda scary.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=610791985 Aniela Marie Perry

I thought it was kinda cool when I thought the red toes were part of a boot and not her nylons.

    • malvernite

love her look, no lie. the dress is shapeless on the model, not her because she’s got real and substantial legs to complement the design of the dress. i even love the stocking shoe thing – loose dress, fitted legwear. rihanna takes fashion risks, and its obvious she loves clothes and knows what she likes and chooses to wear them in her own way. more power to her.

btw, i hear its an acne breakout she’s trying to hide.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

But her toes match her lips.  Does she get a point for that? ;)

    • http://twitter.com/TheSpankyBlog McSpanky

I feel so against-the-stream but must say Ri’s outfit delights me. For once she’s not baring a midriff or anything else. And the socks with the red tips are pretty clever. At least it’s not a nude pump!

    • Samantha Irene

I kind of love that she went all the way there and matched her lips to her toes… like a spoof on nail polish.

    • LuisaNL

Thank you for the laughs TLo! Those red toes are making my eye twitch.

    • http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=lf UltimaEsperenza

I think she looks great.  Sorry.

    • Lisa

Actually, I think she looks better than she has in ages!  Gotta disagree with ya, TLo.

    • BayTampaBay

I don’t think she looks all “that Bad”.  I have seen her in much worse.

    • librarygrrl64

Wow, talk about your boxy and unflattering dresses. Yikes!

    • marishka1

I was really digging the shoes with the red toes until I realized they were open toe with red stocking/toes. Fug.

    • marishka1

I was really digging the shoes with the red toes until I realized they were open toe with red stocking/toes. Fug.

    • Louise Bryan

Gee, when I first looked at it, I thought they were weird boots, which wouldn’t have made them look any better, but would at least have been sane.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1303837450 Lauren Dorsee Dillon

The only explanation for this outfit is that she does indeed have a toothache and is so doped up on pain meds that she thinks she looks good.

    • lilazander

She lookslike her pretenious self, I cannot stand her and her reeky wardrobe; I an smell the stench through the screen. I’m bailing out…

    • Stubenville

The dress looks like a short hair salon smock, especially on the model. Fail.

    • TheOtherChristina

Okay, maybe this is the DayQuil talking, but I freaking love this.

    • KathKo

OK. I’m taking a easy guess here and say you must had the joke used in at least half the comments but, it’s really… Something else, isn’t it ?
OK, I’m as out as Rihanna here.

    • http://twitter.com/FashionistaTyms TheFashionistaTimes

The thigh-highs and toe-tips are unforgivable.

    • mom2ab

I dunno- I kinda liked it.  Nice to see her looking like a human- hair color found in nature, no muppet parts, naughty bits or religous leaders used as accessories.  Not a fan of the red toe tips but otherwise thought it was stylish and interesting.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=739196218 Leah Burns

I think it’s the leopard print sack dress that does her in. That thing doesn’t even look good on the model.

    • Cathy S

      Oh no.

    • lilazander

She’s becoming hard to look at with every appearance. BLEH!

    • bitterk
