Reese Witherspoon in Vanessa Bruno

Posted on April 10, 2012

Reese, you’re pregs and you’re sneaking out the side door of church on Easter Sunday. We totally get why you don’t want to be photographed at the moment.

But rest easy, because even though we tend to drop a bitchbomb at the mere mention of your name, we’re actually gonna do you a solid.

Reese Witherspoon with family at church on Easter Sunday.

Vanessa Bruno Athé Fuchsia Belted Silk Dress

Because this dress? Kind of adorable. It’s a great color and it looks breezy and simple. We kinda hate the bag but we’ll let that slide. We’re more interested in your decision to highlight this fuchsia with grey accents, which was a pretty solid idea.

And speaking of solid…

Diane von Furstenberg Sinead Twist Sandals

This type of big-ass strappy shoe is are all the rage lately.  At least on celebrities. We have a feeling we’re going to have to come to terms with it because it’s only going to become more common to see. Stylists and the clients they serve are pretty sheep-like. If one starlet wears a big-ass strappy shoe, then you can bet the next 20 down the line are going to do the same thing.

So, Big-Ass Strappy Shoes: YEA or NAY?

We tend not to like the style but we like this pair and we like them paired with that dress. It almost always comes down to color with shoes and this pair is neutral, but not skin-matching, which means they work.

I’m not a fan, but they look good with that dress.  OUT overall

    • http://profiles.google.com/melantha.chimera Eileen Duffy

I like this pair, but most I don’t.  I think she looks great.

      • NormDeplume720

I agree. She looks fabulous. The shoes look good in gray. If they were in black or taupe, I’d probably hate them.

        • MoreShoes

Yea. You’re right about the colour. I love them in gray but in black they would look too heavy. And the detail in a different colour takes it away from being boring.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZMU2QQUTAUEPU23MUTZBQ5W2PI Peter

Agreed. Adore the gray. My only problem with this particular pair, though, is that the nude strap comes off looking like a Band-Aid. I can’t be the only one seeing that.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

My mom NEVER would have let us show cleavage on Easter Sunday!! (Or any other time of year.)

Cute dress though… neutral on the shoes.

      • ballerinawithagun

        What cleavage???

        • sleah_in_norcal

          and what children?

      • EveEve

Give her some credit for being a Hollywood movie star who goes to church on Easter Sunday with her children (who both looked adorable too).   She looks fantastic – perfect for on a warm sunny day in Santa Monica when she wasn’t courting the cameras.

    • karena10

Yea – this shoe style is great for spring and summer.  I’m not wild about the back strap being a different color, but I’m not ruling out a whole style of shoe because of a detail on this particular pair.

    • TheDivineMissAnn

Yea on the big ass strappy shoes and the dress.  She looks great.

GoodGodalmighty, can’t these people even go to church without being harassed by photogs?

    • TheAutisticStepmom

I love all of this.  I don’t even mind the cleavage.  I’m pregnant, too, and anything that fits isn’t going to fit the girls right now.  Plus, they’re hot and sore, and it’s swoob season.  You have to let them air out.

    • TheAutisticStepmom

I’m also insanely jealous that she can still wear heels.  I had to leave mine in the closet by 9 weeks in.  My sparkly flats salute you, Ms. Witherspoon.

      • christinewithanx

Haha, the sparkly flats, I had exactly those, along with the sparkly flip flops, for prego time. I don’t know how she’s doing it either, good thing these celebs don’t have to pound the pavement in a city.

    • ballerinawithagun

Yea to the shoes, they actually look walkable.
      She look great! Ugly purse.

    • TAGinMO

So…Reese Witherspoon attends church in a Morton Building? What the hell?

      • TheDivineMissAnn

Actually, down here in the south, a lot of churches are in metal buildings.  Growing up as a Catholic in the upper Midwest, it took me a while to get used to that concept!

        • TAGinMO

Oh, I’m no stranger to the concept of aluminum churches, growing up in small-town Kansas and living in Missouri.

My point was that if I were a big star with more money than Canada and my family were still worshipping in a machine shed, I’d make a sizeable donation to the church’s building fund so they could erect a proper structure for me to grace with my presence on the holidays. :-)

          • TheDivineMissAnn

Good point!  Time to tithe that 10%.

            • TAGinMO

              Downer alert below!

          • AnaRoW

If I were a member of a church that received a large donation from a superstar member of the congregation, I’d hope they’d put that money to better use than upgrading a building.  There are more important things in the world than stucco.

    • MilaXX

I’m sure as this heads into silly putty pump territory I’ll grow to hate it, but for now YEA

    • MilaXX

agreed, those are prego boobs. Not much she can do other than wear a turtleneck

      • sleah_in_norcal

really.  she looks like christina hendricks…

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

NAY on the shoes. She looks adorable though.

    • Judy_J

I’m not sure I can make a blanket statement about all big ass strappy shoes, but I love this pair.

    • piecesofconfetti

In general, NAY… but I like the pair she’s wearing. Or I just like them on her, with her dress. I can’t fault her for wanting some extra support while being pregs.

    • Pennymac

I think she looks adorable and appropriate and I actually like the big ass strappy sandal. When I was this preggers I looked like a swollen beached whale, so you GO Reese!

    • http://twitter.com/mizenkay Nancy K.

IN. She looks great, love the dress! But does she go to church in a shipping container?

      • http://www.facebook.com/charlotte.horseman Charlotte Horseman

        heehee!

      • sleah_in_norcal

and why is the door propped open with a piece of 2×4?

        • formerlyAnon

Best case: it’s impossible to open and close silently, and it’s the escape route for whiny children, faint elders and uncomfortable pregnant ladies.

2nd best case: It’s self-locking and they don’t want anyone knocking during services.

Worst case: The air conditioning is not up to the Easter services crowd.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OSYAJATXUH3QX7ZDDF52GXG4PU Janie R

I like this particular pair, but mostly no. The tops of my feet break out in a sweat just looking at them.

    • jw_ny

I’ll go with a Yea…when done correctly as in Reese’s case, they work.  I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot of cases to the contrary though…

    • lalahartma

      Yay!

    • cmb92191

Very cute dress.  As for the big ass strappy sandal- I’ll give it an IN  because my big wide feet can fit in them.  I can never do those narrow pointy toe things without going up almost three sizes.  Those shoes look like they are styled for wide feet.. so that is an IN for me!

    • http://www.facebook.com/briana.kerensky Briana Kerensky

Overall I like the shoes except for the beige strap. It looks like a band-aid.

    • http://twitter.com/chylde bellalozza

Big ass strappy shoes make otherwise 4 inch heels look fairly comfortable. YAY!

    • blixtme

IN – we preggos gotta stick together! I actually think she looks great, especially given there’s about a 50/50 chance she’s throwing up at least once a day right now.

      • TheAutisticStepmom

I threw up in heels once.  Not pretty.

    • nannypoo

She looks perky even when she’s pregnant. So irritating.

    • http://smalltownbigwardrobe.wordpress.com Catherine

Love this outfit, pregnant or no – but her bump makes it even more adorable! IN!

    • belfebe

Big ass strappy shoes:  Yes.  Love them.

    • sagecreek

      YAY! I love ‘em!

    • DinaSews

I’m kind of liking the shoes.  They look sturdier than strappy sandals yet open enough to carry off this dress.  I’m saying YEA.

    • SapphoPoet

Cute. I also like the shoes.

    • guest2visits

I think she looks wonderful; thats one of the nicest dresses for her in a long while.
The shoes look alittle frumpy in their profile; – but any heels with pregnancy is a feat.

      • sleah_in_norcal

        a feet feat!

    • mcarlson

Nay. I love me a strappy shoe, but not ones that look like I’m wearing belts wrapped around a stiletto.

    • Verascity

Hate them, but that dress is amazingly cute.

    • Jennifer Jacobsen-Wood

I think the big straps look bandage-like and scream retirement home.  I hate them.

    • EEKstl

YEA – love these and love BASS in general.  She looks terrific, FYI.  Great color on her.

    • Trisha26

I like the shoe and don’t mind the strap – however – why is it a different color? It looks like a bandaid.

      • sleah_in_norcal

i wondered about that too. kinda blows the whole look, shoe-wise…

    • lrhoff

She looks great, and I like the shoes.  They look comfortable, too (a.k.a. realistic and functional, which is what someone like me who’s on her feet all day wants while still trying to be fashionable).  I know you boys dislike Reese, but I like her.

    • JimiG

She looks great. That dress gives her a shape without being ridiculously tight like a lot of celeb maternity wear. And I love the shoes. The wide leather straps seem like they might actually be comfortable when your preggo feet swell in LA heat–it’s been warm here!

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Nay to big ass strappy shoes. Yay to cute fuschia dresses!

    • suzinrva

Yea for sure. For someone who is a little self conscious of her feet, but still wants the cute heels, big straps/uppers/toe covering is key!

Plus totally looks cute with the dress.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1344314000 Anne Meek White

She looks cute. Love the baby bump. :)

    • http://www.facebook.com/sorana.tarmu Sorana Tarmu

I don’t like this pair, matching grey with beige makes me think of furniture. But YAY overall.

    • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

I love these shoes. So much. First thing I noticed. Bag? What bag? SHOES. So I guess a Yea from me.

    • BrooklynBomber

YEA all the way. Because if you’re gonna wear heels & strappy sandals, at least these hold your feet in a bit and are less likely to give you horrible blisters.

    • BazoDee

YEA. I like them and I love them with that dress. PS -how do her knees look that young?

    • Anathema_Device

Hmm…not sure I can give a blanket Yea to big-ass strappy shoes. I do like these and others I’ve seen, so I guess I like them in general. They could go really wrong really quickly, though.

Agree that Witherspoon looks great here. I love that color on her.

    • lizajane1776

She looks great. But those shoes…I don’t know that I can get behind them. This particular pair isn’t so bad, but picture it in black. Ugh. The thing is, I can imaging that it is very comfortable, the honkin’ strap holding the shoe on, so ….

    • http://profiles.google.com/sephski Jennifer Szczublewski

NAY to granny-bingo-sandals with stiletto heels. HELL NAY!

    • mhleta

One of my all time fashion bete noires is to see women who accept pain as part of fashion. I hate to see a woman in shoes that I just know are killing her feet. We’ve come this far from corsets and still we truss up our feet like Christmas geese. Most of the strappy sandals I’ve seen fit into this category. These, hallelujah, do not. This looks like a well balanced and nicely padded shoe, but is still sleek and stylish. She looks marvelous. And we know why she snuck out of church. Sitting in a pew when your 7 months pregnant is torture.

    • mhleta

Forget the shoes and bag–why is this church brown? It looks like a refrigeration warehouse.

    • Sara__B

Big-ass strappy shoes? NAY in most cases, because they’re so heavy-looking, but I’m surprised to like the way Reese’s BAS shoes look on her, with this dress.

    • SpcilK

If they are by Maison Martin Margiela, hell yea I’m in! Otherwise NO.

    • http://twitter.com/democracydiva Democracy Diva

Nay to the trend in general; yay to this particular pair, because they’re cute.

    • kimmeister

NAY in general, with exceptions for ones that don’t contrast too much from the wearer’s skin tone.

    • marilyn

With such high heels on pregnant women, NAY.  Any sized heel on non-pregnant women, YEA.  By the way, that is what Reese wears to CHURCH on EASTER SUNDAY?!!??

      • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Is it not appropriate for church? I haven’t been in a while so I am not sure of what is OK.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Liz-Norris/26609454 Liz Norris

She would have fit right in at my church’s Easter Sunday service. Most Sundays, at least half the crowd is in jeans.

I think a lot of churches have grudgingly accepted casual wear by now. You’re expected to make a teensy bit of effort for holidays (a dress counts as effort), but other than that? *Shrug* Just no burlap sacks, please.

    • carpediva

      YEA.

    • lordandtaylor

There is a time and place to show your bust. Church on Easter Sunday is not the time or place. Cute dress though. Bad choice on the bag The shoes? Well, better than the flip flops people seem to be wearing everywhere these days. Time and place people!

By the way Reese,  “Jesus wants you to stay off the grass and stay on the sidewalk. It is the way to get to heaven” (Per Sister Paulette at our Lady of Good Hope Grade School.)

    • Spicytomato1

The dress looks cute on her but I would love to see a bit of a sleeve on it. Not everyone likes sleeveless, and it kills me because it’s so hard to find a cute summer dress with sleeves! Current pet peeve of mine.

As for the shoes, they’re not terrible and I’m guessing they’re fairly supportive as far as stilettos go. Still, they’re not the most flattering so I give them a nay.

    • Thathoodwink

NAY on the shoes. The color (??) is awful, and the back strap looks like a big ol’ bandaid. The holes for the prong are the air vents of the bandaid.

    • girliecue

It depends on the shoe design. Some big-assed strappy shoes are actually quite cute and some of them are a big Oh Hay-ell No.

    • halleygee

I love these shoes – baaaa.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

I like them. I have wide feet, so the skinny strap shoes look atrocious on me. Nice for us fat-footed girls to have something besides the pump.

    • TheOriginalLulu

Yeah, but in general, the fashion industry makes its money based on the inherent sheep-like quality of human beings, whether we’re willing to admit it or not.
Otherwise we would all be making our own clothes at home and running through the streets shouting Vive La Difference!

In any case, I think she looks adorable here. I’m going to take the Big Ass Strappy Shoes on a case-by-case basis. This particular pair isn’t too bad. I’m not nuts about the color, but they work with the rest of the outfit so they’re ok.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1533238316 Nancy Kelley

Where do you get your pictures?  Do your readers submit them?  Just wondering…
Reese wears her pregnancy well.  Love the color, and the shoes.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/UX5NKMDCREVIFMKHYI6LTSDFHI Sally

Mega YEA on Big Ass Strappy Shoes!
      a. if done right, they make a sweet demure outfit look kick-ass, b.they don’t hurt as much as thin straps (my feet are so over this fashion is pain thing), and c. they look FAB on taller and bigger girls.

PS: I do totally agree with the band aid comment on this particular pair

    • lilazander

And guys, she’s pregnant, women’s bodies and feet largely seem to suffer from all sorts of changes. Despite being heels, those shoes look soft and supportive. Doesn’t she look radiant? I can only admire her for wearing heels while pregnant, unless she just feels fine on every front (I’m jealous, then).

    • kittenwithaquip

The strap looks like the band-aid she’s going to need on her heels if she actually has to walk more than 10ft in those shoes. I’m not against pregnant women wearing heels in theory, but in reality? Water-retention can give even the tiniest woman cankles and Fred Flintstone feet. My youngest child is 4-years-old and my feet are still throbbing in sympathy looking at those shoes.

OUT because they look painful AND they’re fugly.

    • http://twitter.com/Sinead_Doyle Sinéad Doyle

I’m just excited there are sandals named after me! (well I can pretend) so YEA.

    • Cathy S

I like that particular shoe. Not sure about them in general though.

    • http://blue-again.myopenid.com/ blue

       YEA. Love the shoes.

    • http://angryfemur.tumblr.com Andrea Lane

I like the big strappy shoe. I think it adds some interest to a lot of looks.

    • Cousin_Rose

Look, IN. Shoes, IN. Love the shoes but as others have said, that style does not look so good in black.

    • formerlyAnon

      YEA, when they look good.

Most who’ll get a pair won’t always make that call correctly, but this fad will self-correct quickly. Looking like “the one who can still wear heels” at the senior citizens’ center isn’t going to be popular for long.

    • BrightsideSusan

I agree that the color makes the difference when the straps are so prominent.  These are pretty.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Yeah, I like THAT pair of shoes.  I think I’d have to take it on a case by case basis.  Reese looks beautiful.

    • alyce1213

Depends on the individual shoe, of course.  These are great – color, design.
      And she looks wonderful.

    • CQAussie

Yay for this particular big-ass strappy sandal!  LOVE!

    • http://twitter.com/carelessriver Cassie L

NAY. NAY on the big-ass strappy shoes. My poor size 5 feet are overwhelmed by them.

    • TieDye64

Generally NAY on the big-ass strappy shoes, but I agree that they work here. She looks cute.

    • Samantha Irene

I like big strappy shoes – mostly with narrow leg or slightly cropped pants and not dresses/skirts/shorts – but I don’t mind this pair in this instance – and I feel like being prego you want a little more holding you into your sandal as narrow straps could cut off circulation on bloated feet.

Pink is a good color  for her too!

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

LOVE.  And why am I sad that the paparazzi followed the poor thing to church?

    • http://twitter.com/Eovaai Eovaai

YEA.  If the colour works, it’s a great look.

    • http://www.myblackfriendsays.com myblackfriendsays

the dress is super cute. I hate strappy shoes, so NAY on that one.

    • ThaliaMenninger

      NAY on the shoes. HAAAATE.

    • elzatelzabelz

IN- even though I usually hate these types of shoes, I think they look great with the outfit.

    • http://onionjam.tumblr.com SkipperJane

Since I have a pair of Banana Republic heels that are almost a dead ringer for these, I guess I have to vote “Yay.”

From the perspective of practicality, some of the wide strap sandals are very comfortable, compared to thin-strapped sandals that slice into your feet.

    • http://naturallyeducational.com/ CandaceApril

      I “like” her.

The dress is cute but there is a part (probably from my Granny) that says, “needs a slip”. Do they even sell those, anymore?

The shoes are awesome except for the fact that it looks like she has on a giant bandaid…which immediately makes me think about how much those shoes must hurt and, having been pregnant three time during the summer just makes me wince in sympathy. Not exactly a fashion “moment”.

    • ccm800

Yea – sure why not?!  And she does look adorable here.

    • ArrEssJay

I love wide straps.  They make my size 10 feet look not so loooooong.

Cute dress .. perfect length, perfect neck, perfect sleeves.  Not crazy about the color but it is Easter-ey.
      I think she looks terrific.
