Pairs Division: Efron and Schilling

Posted on April 26, 2012

Oh, man. We hate it when we wind up violating a long-held conviction.

Zac Efron and Taylor Schilling attend the premiere of “The Lucky One” in Germany. Zac Efron wore a George Clinton suit and Taylor Schilling wore a vintage Azzedine Alaïa dress paired with Jimmy Choo shoes and Neil Lane jewelry.

Might as well jump right into it.

HE: Is wearing a shiny suit – and we kind of love it on him. We KNOW. We’ve been bitching about the shiny suits for a good while now, but for some reason, this is all working for us. Maybe it’s because he’s young and tiny. Maybe it’s because it’s red. Maybe it’s the slim cut. Whatever it is, it’s looking pretty good to our eyes. We wish he would have buttoned the jacket for pictures, but that’s really the only complaint we have. Score: 9/10. We couldn’t face ourselves in the mirror if we gave a perfect score for a shiny suit.

SHE: Needs help. We’ve tried to be polite about the hair and makeup but no longer. Girl need to pay a snippy gay to take care of that shit for public events. It all looks way too DIY. And that hairstyle isn’t doing her any favors. Makes her look mousey. As for the dress… we’re not in love. Long-sleeved, high-necked, tight, black mini-dresses just scream ’90s to us. There’s nothing here that looks modern, which is funny, because she took quite the modern risk on the red carpet the other day. This is a disappointing followup. This is gonna sound a little mean (HAHA!) but she looks like a male star’s unfamous wife. You know how it is: some big male star is married to a civilian who only occasionally makes public appearances and never dresses to take the focus away from hubby. Girl, we hope the studio isn’t pressuring you to dress down so that pretty boy there gets all the focus. This is your time. Step it up. Score: 5/10.

Combined Score: 7/10. Taylor, we expect you to wow us the next time.

  • Damn Efron, making me like him in that suit… Bastard.

    • JasmineAM

I have never found him, in the slightest bit, attractive. But DAMN, he looks hot!

    • drdirection

he almost looks a little “rat-pack”-ish

    • fursa_saida

Yup. It’s weird how that color brings out his eyes, too. Probably doesn’t hurt that I love me a maroon.

  • Funny, the last half of your comments about Schilling – I was just thinking in these pictures she reminds me of Mrs. Ben Stiller. Who isn’t exactly UNfamous. . . but, well, I can’t remember her own name.

    • ChiKat67

Christine Taylor, aka Mrs Ben Stiller.  They could be sisters, both in looks and fashion.

  • Stefanos Mantyla

Zac is making this one WERQ, probably for all the reasons you listed concurrently.

She did great that one time, and now she resorts to this hair more than once since then; why?

  • Efron looks fantastic and I WANT THAT SUIT!  She looks like his aunt.  Is it just this set of pictures where she looks a decent bit older than him?  Or does she always look so?

    • elemspbee

agreed about the leading lady. or is he just looking like the twee that he is?

    • Lori

It’s not just this set of pictures. Looks-wise they’re pretty much a mismatch and their clothing and presentation choices always seem to exacerbate it, this being a perfect example. He’s wearing something that only works because he’s young (and tiny). Her dress makes her look like she pulled the 90s out of the back of her closet. The casting for this movie was a bit odd, is what I’m saying.

    • Jill_3

She’s always looked older than him- it’s very strange casting. He looks younger than his age, and she looks older, and she already IS a couple years older than him. Every time I see that trailer I think it looks like he’s making out with his mother.

      • Nelliebelle1197

I KNOW!It drives me crazy. Indifferent to him and unaware of her, but who the heck CAST that movie?

      • paginatrix

I always think she looks like she’s his babysitter.

  • Kerri Erwin

She needs to stop tucking her hair behind her ears on the red carpet. It’s not really a bad cut or shape, it’s just the tucking makes it look amateur and sloppy. It’s like buttoning a jacket for a man. Men should button, women should not tuck.

  • oohsparkley!

Maybe because it doesn’t resemble a Mafia suit.

  • Anathema_Device

I like shiny suits when they’re done right. He looks great in this. The fit is perfect and the pant-leg width is good. Also, no wrinkling to be found, so he looks sharp and impeccable.

Yes, she looks very ’90s. Not awful, but a little disappointing given her potential.

  • janetjb

    Him: WERQ!
    Her: Whatever

  • Ellie Rowe

First thought when I saw Zefron: Holy shit, he looks amazing.
Second thought: What the fuck is he wearing?

and girlfriend needs a new haircut. Maybe Zac can pass on his stylists details.

  • Alison Jimenez

She’s dressed like a Fly Girl on In Living Color …

  • Jessica O’Connell

I think it’s definitely the color of the suit. It’s just so refreshing to see something other than black or charcoal grey that we’re all swooning over a shiny suit! I think it’s also a plus that it’s a slim cut and that he’s lost some of the bulk that he put on for the film, which I don’t think fit him at all. I don’t like him… I don’t like shiny suits…but I like him in this shiny suit. Damn you Zefron! How do you do these things to us???

  • nomoreprinces

Every time I see this woman, she looks like a different celebrity.  The other day it was Amber Valletta and Charlize, now she looks eerily like Alicia Silverstone in some and Leighton Meister in others.  It’s almost as if she’s trying to be a celebrity look-a-like.

    • BerlinerNYC

Word. I have no idea who she is, and when I first saw the little picture before clicking on it, I wondered why Diane Kruger was stepping out on Pacey. She’s versatile to the point of being (gorgeously) completely forgettable.

      • nomoreprinces

Yes! Diane Kruger was another one!  It’s like she resembles so many other women that she has no identity of her own because all I remember her as is “that woman who looks like so-and-so.”

        • BerlinerNYC

          She’s like Mystique from X-Men! 😉

  • alyce1213

Sometimes when you break the rules in the right way, it just works.  Good for him, he looks great.

  • Mrs

The shiny suit looks great because it’s SUPPOSED to look shiny — the shinier the better.  Other shiny suits look awful because they aren’t really supposed to be *shiny* but more like *glowing*, and in photos the shininess they take on makes them just look cheap.

  • SpcilK

Good for you Zac, very stylish.

  • colleenjanel

I can tell you guys are really confuzzled by your response to this suit. You didn’t even yell at him to get his hands out of his pockets!

  • BrooklynBomber

    What a strange dress.
    What a purple suit.

  • BerlinerNYC

There’s a reason it screams 90s: it’s vintage. The 90s are back with a vengeance with the youngs. I could totally see Rachel rocking this on one of the early seasons of Friends (if her character had made a lot more money than she did working at Central Perk). It’s crazy to look at Melrose Place and Friends (or, notoriously, Ally McBeal) and see just how acceptably short skirts got for a while mid-decade (insert requisite “good china” quip).

    • snarkalicious

Wait…90’s is now considered “vintage”?  That’s it:  I am officially a million years old.

Also, her dress is echoing that stupid Lululemon logo a bit too much.

      • BerlinerNYC

lol… well, it’s 20 years ago. When Julia Roberts won her Oscar in 2001, she was wearing a “vintage Valentino gown” from 1982, which is about the same timespan. I think “vintage” is supposed to just be code for “it’s old enough that clearly you won’t think I’m dumb enough to not realize that it’s not new.” Wearing “vintage” can win accolades, while wearing something from a few seasons ago will land you on Fashion Police.

      • Carleenml

well god bless them if they’re just skipping over the 80’s entirely. (says she who knows)

        • Are you kidding me?  The 80s has been on full blast for the past two years.  Skinny jeans, neon, thick plastic glasses frames, etc.

      • holdmewhileimnaked

Also, her dress is echoing that stupid Lululemon logo a bit too much.
        other way around.

        edited to add:
as per above or below, depending on yr sort of sort:
well god bless them if they’re just skipping over the 80’s entirely. (says she who knows)
ibid, a thousandgoogolplex times over. but theyve already done them, theyve come [back] & gone. actually, the gone part is just a hope. theyre still w/ us. just look around. the next time someone asks you, as i have been asked: why do people wanna look so cheap these days? you too can figuratively point at the return of the worst postmodern decade of current human times.

  • Lina_bee

She is completely adorable but she needs a (better) stylist. He is working the hell out of that suit. I don’t even like him, but the suit makes him look interesting for the first time ever.

  • schadenfreudelicious

It’s shiny, tight and plum colored,.. on a man… and i like it…a lot…never thought i would be typing those words in the same sentence…

    • TieDye64

I’m with you. Who woulda’ thunk it.

  • Roman000

I want that suit! (but in black, not a fan of the wine color hes sporting). Could careless about whoever the hell he’s standing next to.

  • TonyGo

He looks like he should be dancing on the Corny Collins Show.

    • Lisa

  • Annabelle Archer

    In no certain order.
    1. Why do I feel that the suite works somehow more because they are in Germany?
    2. If she is in desperate need of a gay to help guide her style choices, do this mean Efron may be straight?
    3. Could his eyes be any more piercing? That is Blue Steele, baby.

  • Lisa

I just don’t get him.  I appreciate you throwing Zefron a bone, TLo, because although I’m twice his age, I find him incredibly hot, so when he dresses badly, it kills me.  I think he looks awful – he looks worse than that first shiny suit number. The only thing I can say in his favor is that it fits him really, really well.

Of course, the ironic part is that in your April 24th post, “In or Out: Taylor Schilling in Peter Pilotto”, you only showed Taylor in your post, which is fine, since it was about her dress.  But I saw a more expanded view of that event somewhere else online – Zefron was next to her, looking totally normal, looking fantastic in a great non-shiny suit.  Why he’d strike out on Appearance #1, knock it out of the ballpark on Appearance #2, and then go back to shiny and tacky again on Appearance #3 just baffles me.

  • KikiB1

Go on and WERQ That Thing You Do Zac! She looks like she’s prepared in case an alien baby might explode out of her chest.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

george clinton is designing suits now?
ah, fabulous. just hoping it’s him, even, & not some silly name usurper is almost fabulous enough.

i get & dig, if you will, the point about the 90s. but the dress looks good on her, & the sleeves are a whole cargoship fulla zippers better than the sleeves on the more interesting dress the other day.

otoh, my friend’s grandmother’s last words to her were do something about the hair. perhaps not fitting in that time place or space but thems are workable words here.

    otoh, the lipsticks truly nice.

    • filmcricket

“George Clinton is designing suits now?”

EXACTLY what I was going to ask. I’d expect a lot more fringe and feathers. However, if George were going to design a square suit, this is about as low-key as he’d be able to get, I’m sure.

Now I really want a collection based on the P-Funk aesthetic. The 70s are showing up all over the runway, someone get on that, stat!

I actually quite dig her look, but then I was in my late teens/early 20s in the 90s, so they’re my primo decade. This has got the severity of “heroin chic” mixed with the super-short skirt mentioned above. Think she needs a fiercer shoe and possibly a bit more dramatic eye-makeup (although this looks like a day-time event, so too little is better than too much).

    • makeityourself

      Neon light!

      • Lisa

Laa daa da dee da da da…

  • Isy

Damn, Zefron is indeed looking fine in that suit. The colour and fit are pretty much flaw-free.

  • MzzPants

That’s how to wear a shiny suit!  And I’m no Efron lover.  Betcha’ he’s swimming in snippy gays.  He needs to bring Taylor into the fold.

  • Toto Maya

Okay, I’m just gonna say it. Zac Efron looks like a skinny Jack Black. Just LOOK at that second to last picture.  He looks like a major douche also. Pass.

  • sagecreek

I could have gone for that dress if it had been two inches longer. Honey, you don’t have to try quite that hard.

  • Santino Chimpanzee

Maybe you children–and I AM including you two–are just too young to know, but Alaïa is MAJOUR.  You might think it belongs in a Robert Plant video, but you would be WRONG.  The dress is fantastic, the designer is LEGENDARY, it’s the model children … she’s missing her moment.

    • BrooklynBomber

I think people around here know who Alaia is. But knowing he’s “majour” and “legendary” doesn’t mean one has to like everything that has his name on it.

    • MissAnnieRN

Totally agree with Brooklyn Bomber.  See also: Prada and Miu Miu.

  • Jessi03

Zac Efron, the more you age, the more you look like Jared Leto.  This is not a bad thing.

    • AnaRoW

At least until he starts doing his hair and makeup like Jared Leto.

      • MilaXX

aww, I love me some emo Jared Leto

  • sleepycat

Dear god, I am crushing on zac here, he doesn’t look like a twink and not like a roided out twink as the movie makes him look (I have only seen the trailer). Also the thought of him being married to a woman is hilarious, if he does say marry a women she should not be his beard. lol Sorry for the explosion of gayness, but that is what efron does to me.

  • Libby Rhoman

Her color is unbelievably tragic.  Blonde hilights really look best when the same person always does them, butit’s  unfortunately pretty unrealistic for jet setting starlets to maintain that kind of loyalty.  However, it straight-up looks like she went to a beauty school to get her roots done yesterday.

I can’t even begin to think about the rest of the look (though I kind of do like that dress).

    -The Hair Color Police

  • Dejah_Thoris

Maybe it’s because he’s young and tiny. Maybe it’s because it’s red. Maybe it’s the slim cut.

Which makes him sound like the perfect accessory, possibly a broach, hat pin, or hair ribbon.

  • BrooklynBomber

I just realized that suit looks like it might be silk, which explains the shine. Gorgeous, Sewing Siren, what do you think?

  • Wow.  He looks amazing.  Can’t believe it’s a red shiny suit!

  • “We KNOW. We’ve been bitching about the shiny suits for a good while now, but for some reason, this is all working for us.”

It works because you want to suck Efron’s glow stick. Short, simple and honest 😉 I got your back girls. The is a massive OUT for me, for both actors. The suit looks frumpy and the fit is off. Also, easy on the eye liner. The girl is OUT. In fact, this entire post is OUT. I know this is about fashion and not their movie but their movie is OUT too. Girl, bye!

  • I’m sure people are tired of the Hunger Games talk around here, but I would really like to see Zac as Finnick in ‘Catching Fire’.  And by showing us he looks good in unusual colored clothing, I think he’ll dress up for the Capitol just fine.

    • MilaXX

I think he could deliver on the pretty boy part of the role, but for some reason I always envision Finnack as tall and Zac’s average height at beast. BTW I’ve also heard Allision Brie of MadMen and Community suggested as Johanna.

  • The shiny suit, inexplicably, is working. I guess that’s what makes style an art, not a science.

  • granddelusion

And taken his hands out of his pockets. And the suit is not only shiny, but it’s RED. ouch. No thank you.

  • MilaXX

Agree with the score, though I may have been more generous and given her a 6. He is rocking a shiny suit and making it work. The movie still looks like all kinds of suckage, but I’ve never been a fan of schoompy movies like this.

  • Lilithcat

He looks vile.  Like a sleazy lounge singer.  NOBODY looks good in a shiny purple suit.

Her skirt is too short.  And that zipper outlining her boobs is just plain weird.

  • lesmaha

Wow, I cannot get behind that suit.  too red and too shiny for me!

  • its like if lululemon made a dress

  • TieDye64

Dear God, what is the world coming to?! I actually like the suit from the get-go, too. Does that make me mentally ill? Do I have a fever? Is the world about to end? He looks freakin’ fabulous.

She, on the other hand, is looking pretty lame.

  • JasmineAM

What I love about this shiny suit is the color. The color is GORGEOUS. I have no problem with nice colored shiny suits, just the Silver Surfer kind.

  • sleah_in_norcal

maybe it’s because his suit matches his eyeshadow…anyways,

she looks old enough to be his mother in the first picture.  not so much in the close-ups.  maybe it’s because her dress was in style twenty years ago,  i dunno.  she looks like sharon stone.

  • PastryGoddess

Taylor Schillings schick is that she looks like other more famous ladystars.  Keep on working that “who am I” persona girl…in 5 years you’ll be on Dancing With the Stars just like you planned.

Today she looks especially teutonic..I’m going with Diane Kruger

  • nannypoo

    They’re both kind of icky.

  • almondemy

Sorry, gents, that suit is a TRAVESTY.  Just because a thing fits does not mean it looks good!!

  • DCSheehan

Holy crap. That suit is awful! No! My eyes, they burn!!!

I kinda love her outfit. It’s cutesy but it looks good on her.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

WRONG! Too shiny and too red. But you’re right about her.

  • Vaniljekjeks

    He looks amazing.

  • MissAnnieRN

I still can’t with that suit.  Cheers for all who are more open minded than I.  As for her?  God, in my next life, please give me those legs.  PLEASE.  That being said – that dress is too tight, wonky at the hem which only lends momentum to it’s tightness, and whatever is going on in the bodice makes it look perforated, like you can just tear that part of it off later when you’re doing a burlesque routine at the after party.

  • RebeccaKW

Thank you, T Lo.  The first thought I had when I saw her was that her dress reminded me of Kelly Bundy from Married…With Children.   And that is never a good thought for a red carpet look.  I think a red shiny suit on a slender male, that is fitted correctly, is a pretty sharp look.  And for once I don’t hate the Big Boy hair.

  • Judy_S

I actually love that dress. I forget the 90s–when was that? The suit, well, looks as good as a shiny suit could, which is not very. Still, love your comments.

  • I think that dress is fantastic. I love the zipper details. Agree about the hair.

  • M

She looks like Diane Kruger in 10 years.

  • He looks like a pimp.  All he needs is a big fake fur hat to complete the ensemble.

  • marilyn

Her skirt is about 3 inches too short and the dress is way too tight.  The length of the skirt makes her legs look thick, which we know is not the case.  If it were a little longer, it would make her look curvy, and her legs would look better.  Once the hem is cut, you can’t bring it back.

    Generally, a cute couple.

  • KQ67

He looks stunning in that suit, pure love. She needs to go home and start over.

  • Calinda_L

I’ve taken to muting the TV or changing the channel whenever a commercial for this movie comes on, so I don’t know the specifics of the plot (thankfully), but, um, is her character substantially older than his in the movie? Not counting the meh hair/makeup/outfit on display here, she is truly lovely, but when they stand next to each other, they look dramatically different in age (more like mother-and-son than trophy-wife-and-star). Or is it just because he looks so young?

  • Nicole Chubb

Um, it’s an Alaïa! He’s like a totally important designer.

  • BazoDee

“This is gonna sound a little mean (HAHA!) but she looks like a male star’s unfamous wife. You know how it is: some big male star is married to a civilian who only occasionally makes public appearances and never dresses to take the focus away from hubby.”
EXACTLY – I looked at that first pic and all I could see was Efron. I don’t even like him but that suit combined with her blandness makes you just want to look at him and barely notice her!

    • Lisa

She’s the Stacy Keibler of celebrities!

  • I gotta get my hands on this suit! does anyone know anything more about the George Clinton line? I have some weddings comin up…he looks fantastic!

  • guest2visits

I think I like his suit a little less and her dress a little more than youz.  He’s so candy-pretty that yes; a very shiny red suit seems
to suit him well.  And I don’t mind her hair and make-up for this dress. How much more fuss and polish do you need with a dress
that doesn’t require underwear ?  I kinda think they look ok; in a red-carpet-land.

  • ccm800

    EFFFFFron Nice JOB

  • Puckndc

Sink me…I like him in it too…will I go blind and dumb now as the Karma train runs me down?
