Olivia Wilde in Prada

Posted on April 23, 2012

Okay, fine. You’ve worn us down, Miuccia. Long have we maintained, in the face of a rising tide of vocal opposition, that you are a fashion genius and that your intellectual approach to design yields clothes worth talking about and, a season or two later, wind up getting ripped off by other designers. In other words, you have always embodied the phrase, “she doesn’t follow trends; she sets them.”

But girl, we canNOT sign off on this one.

Olivia Wilde attends ‘Help Wanted’ Shorts Program during the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival in NYC in a Prada dress paired with Aperlai sandals.

Aperlaï ‘Spocky’ Platform Sandals

Lo’s (who is her biggest defender) exact words: “Miuccia’s really lost it lately.”

Olivia, we won’t hold this Frankendress against you. We’ve been seduced by the Prada name ourselves.

Those shoes, on the other hand, we lay entirely at your feet (pun totally intended). Actually, they’re kind of fierce, but we’d never have recommended pairing such focus-pullers with an already too-busy outfit.

Completely agree with you guys AS ALWAYS. The shoes are hot, but NOT with that dress. She should save them for something all black or all red.  The dress? Honey, no.

    • DebbieLovesShoes

      Nailed it, Marissa

  • VeryClaire

    The shoes are awesome.

  • Karen Tully

I believe the correct response is “WTF?”

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Wow that dress is wild, isn’t it?  Hard to tell for sure but almost looks like yellow gingham??  That’s a new one.  Hate it.  Agree that the shoes could be fun.

    • MarissaLG

It looks like the losing dress in a project runway design where they were FORCED to use old fabrics that no one likes anymore. Some poor soul got Gingham.

      • Yellow with black lace – nightgown from the 60s

  • TonyGo

She’s wearing a table cloth collection.  Diggin’ the shoes.

  • Is that… seersucker?

    • mountainFashionista

It looks like it, or maybe dotted Swiss…

    • BrooklynBomber

I don’t see seersucker, but I see gingham or something like it.

      • It looks more textured than gingham to me, but it might be an optical illusion!

  • raininmai

The dress is hideous.  It’s a home-ec sewing project gone very wrong. Is it dotted swiss or gingham; I can’t really tell?  But the real question is why?  And the makeup is scary, very scary.

  • What blows is while I generally don’t care for lace, I think the neckline is nice on this one. If only it didn’t look like a picnic tablecloth in the middle, (plus handy napkin) it wouldn’t be that bad. Maybe just black, instead, would let those shoes really shine. Also, her hair looks really bad in that color, and I can’t decide if it’s the tablecloth clashing with it or if she is just not a blonde, but I think it’s both.

  • gdougs

Yellow gingham and lace, couture for hillbillies! Yeah, did not see that one coming…

  • I got really excited by the thumbnail, because I love a black and yellow combination, but the scroll down was just…no.

  • The shoes are ok, but I hate their colour. It looks like some weird cheap fake red thinghy

  • *nodding in agreement*

  • That’s an awful dress.  And the Trekkie in me loves the shoes, even though the heels make my feet hurt, just looking at them.

    • twocee

I have to give a thumbs up to any shoe named for Spock.  Also, they’re fierce.

      • kimmeister

But such an illogical pairing.  Spock would not agree.

  • Judy_J

Holy crap….that is one ugly dress.  However, those shoes are awesome.

  • I adore the top of that dress, why does the bottom half of the dress have to be so dowdy? Not so hot. And the shoes belong on an entirely different look. Colour me confused!

  • MilaXX

FUG all around. Bad hair and dye job, frankendress and shoes that should not be anywhere near that outfit.

  • BazoDee

Project runway fail! too many design elements by a half! (Sorry Prada)

  • It’s not bad enough that nipples are now expected to double as dress hooks, but now you’re recreating the effect with gingham and illusion netting?!  No. And stop it.

  • What a strange dress.

  • Laurie Bergman

I don’t know why, but I’m actually digging this funky little trainwreck of a dress.  Her face in the first two pics says, “Challenge me on this craziness. Do it. You won’t win because somehow I am managing to rock it.”

  • kimmeister

For a dress that looks like it would be so complicated to construct, too bad it turned out to be such a disaster!

  • Judy_S

I could almost deal with the dress if it weren’t for the bit of white at the waistline. It’s as if…. as if the elastic came off her half-slip so she pulled it up over the top of the skirt to keep it from falling off and then the blouse (?) rode up and revealed it.

Olivia looks really pretty, but that outfit has problems beyond pretty.

Not sure about the shoes. They seem to have built-in spurs. I would not want to stand behind her.

  • sagecreek

Yellow gingham and black lace…I had a night like that in high school, desperately rummaging thru my mom’s sewing drawer to find anything I could make into a new look.

  • How ironic she wore that to the premier of a movie called “Help Wanted.”  It’s so apropos.

  • That is one hideous outfit.

  • Anathema_Device

Wow. What a total disaster. i do agree that the shoes are cool, but they are all kinds of wrong with that dress.

  • VeryClaire

AND visible bra straps? She should be sent home.

  • Before I scrolled down I thought, “I could almost sign off on it without that weird white strip.” And then I scrolled down and OH NO IT REALLY DOES LOOK LIKE GINGHAM WHY?!

  • Rand Ortega

Seriously, the shoes are called, “Spocky”? As if I couldn’t love them any more…

  • AthenaJ

Sorry, but the hair is way worse than the dress. It does absolutely NOTHING for Olivia, and is only elongating her already high forehead. She’s clearly someone (such as myself) who needs bangs, or at least a hairstyle to balance out the strong features in her face.

  • jw_ny

What were they smoking when they designed THAT dress…musta been some good sh*t! (good in a bad way I mean ;)) They even then allowed it to go out for production too…smh…

Those shoes really do look pretty fierce on her.  Too bad she wasted them with that horrible dress.

  • The frankendress trend needs to die already. Terrible.

  • NurseEllen

She is one hot mess, and those shoes, while absolutely fierce, do nothing for that outfit.  You didn’t ask, but she is OUT.

  • Call me Bee

Shoes are fierce.  The dress is not, and Olivia looks a bit like Bender’s GF her square jaw and square hair.  (…people of Earth…)

  • jjfg

Wow, that’s godawful.  Get it together, 13! Not your dress.  Probably not anyone’s dress – more like someone’s nightie over someone’s table runner.

  • NCDFan

The dress looks like it was made out of handi-wipes and an old slip. Ugh!

  • Vaniljekjeks

    Those shoes kick ass.

  • janedonuts

This is terrible top to bottom. And that hair color… is bad. Ages her tremendously.

  • marilyn

Bad shoes, bad dress, cute girl.  She needs a better stylist.

  • Scarlet39

That looks like something thrown together at Forever 21 or Charlotte Russe.

  • I am convinced that this constitutes hatred in dress form.

  • Joyce VG

Was she held at gunpoint? Wow.

  • Yikes. That is awful.

Olivia darling, do something with that hair. Please. We’re begging you.

  • mshesterp

I hate all of it, including the shoes. I feel like they’re giving her cankles, and I sincerely doubt Olivia has cankles.  I just should like them better than I do.  Prada, you’re killing me with the rest of it.

  • Pants_are_a_must

This is a whole big “NO” until you get to the sandals. The hair suits her not, and neither does the make up. Also, when I think about Olivia Wilde, I don’t think “lacy, sunny frankendress”.

  • nannypoo

And you didn’t even mention her hair. When you have a huge forehead, and your jaw is even wider than said huge forehead, is it really a good idea to wear your hair like this?

  • demidaemon

I think it is quite fitting that she attended an event named “Help Wanted.” Perhaps, she is crying for it.

  • alyce1213

Everything is wrong.  Utterly hideous dress with the wrong shoes.

  • Sara__B

This one should make a “100 Worst Red Carpet Looks of the 21st Century” list. A truly awful dress.

  • Ho-ly Crap. This is by far the worst dress I’ve seen on this blog in a long time. Wow, there is nothing worth salvaging here. Geezus.

  • ccm800

I think Wilde misses the mark more often then not. I am not a fan of her style at all. This dress looks like someone threw a scrambled raw egg at the curtains.

  • quiltrx

This dress looks like a bizarre entry in a really bad Project Runway challenge.

But those shoes are MILES better than anything that’s ever shown up on the accessory wall!

    • TieDye64

You know, those shoes could look pretty fierce with the right outfit.

  • SewingSiren

    Too many details and elements.

  • TieDye64

Man, that is one ugly, cheap looking dress. Fug beyond words, really.
I can probably find something better at Target. Honey, why waste your God given beauty by wearing something so hiddy.

  • poggi

    hankies, tablecloths, and doilies–oh my!

  • CharCrop

The shoes are indeed FIERCE! The dress?…loving-hands-at-home!

  • PeaceBang

Oh, oh, oh, those shoes!! With a LBD, all she needed.

  • BrooklynBomber

I love Prada. . . except when I don’t. Sometimes they put out something so unabashedly awful you have to wonder if the whole company was hallucinating after drinking homemade grappa or something.

  • EEKstl

Methinks an acid trip may have been the culprit here, but I will defend those shoes –the color at least– as the best part of this look. The red with the black and yellow works surprisingly well.

  • Lina_bee

It’s like they played a drinking game sticking random pieces from the scrap bin together and calling it a dress. Or threw a birthday party where every guest brought a horrible scrap of fabric and the birthday person had to make something out of them. Which, fine, FUN! But you don’t send it out on the RC.

  • ChristySchiff

There is nothing okay about that dress.  Yikes.  The shoes, however, are to die.  She should have just gone out wearing the shoes.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

    What dress?
But those SHOES are really zotsy.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Dorothy Gale meets BoomBoom La Tour in a Death Match. Who in the HELL pairs yellow gingham with that black lace?  I imagine it’s some kind of statement but I don’t care.  Burn it.

  • The shoes are awesome by themselves, but as part of this look they suck.  Actually, I hate every single thing about this look.  It’s one of the worst outfits I’ve seen in a long time.

  • mismatched lingeries.

  • PeggyOC

That dress is a waste of a fierce pair of shoes with an AWESOME name.  Go find a LBD to wear those with, Olivia!

  • Olivia Fitch

I don’t like the dress… but…. I GET it, if you know what I mean. I get the influences and what she’s trying to do, and it’s rare to see that thinking behind the finished product on the runway.

  • TheOriginalLulu

    That dress is a crime.
The shoes, on the other hand…are HOT. I want them right now.
Olivia darling. Can’t you see how this peroxide hair washes you out and ages you?? Why do you want to hurt me? I’m begging you…please go back to your natural dark hair.

  • Cathy S

    Wait, is that yellow gingham?

    • With, like, black lace? It’s just too much, even before the Manhattan Transfer shoes.

  • ersatzhipster

Hm… I almost love that dress. It looks a bit like she pulled the skirt up and tied it around/at her waist to reveal the lace slip, and I just want to let the poor thing down.

At the very least, lose the waist-kerchief and get the underskirt to match (in tone) the yellow? So almost cute, IMO.

  • nancylee61

This is a laughably bad outfit. Looks like something my daughter put together from the attic when she was 6.

  • rh33

Is she wearing a half-slip over an old nightgown? What a waste of a perfectly amazing shoe.

  • Susan Crawford

The dress is from Miuccia’s recent Cracktastique Collectione. But the shoes are definitely from heaven.

  • Sophie Collier

Keep the shoes, Olivia, ditch the dress and try another.

  • lilazander

It totally is a frankendress, but the shoes; gosh I want.

  • Cheri Lee
