Natalie Portman in Paris

Posted on April 05, 2012

Natalie uses a Paris sidewalk as a runway to model her contractually obligated Dior.

Christian Dior Shoes

And isn’t that what Paris sidewalks are all about?

Love the shoes and the trench (not so much on the dress), but her face looks like a mask. Crack a smile, girl. You’re modeling Dior on a Paris sidewalk. We’re pretty sure a million girls working minimum wage would happily take your place for 5 minutes.

Why does she look like she’s walking on an invisible tightrope?

  • Ms_Flyover

I can’t really believe how much I dislike those shoes on someone’s foot.  They look fine on their own and like a bad see through bra on her feet.  I envision foot fetishists  all over needed to put “NSFW” on this one.

Or maybe I’m just in a mood.  I seem to be a lot lately.

    • cluecat

At first glance I thought the pump was black on metallic, and that she was wearing a different color.  But, then I saw that the metallic is actually mesh – it’s kind of strange and fetish-y, like those lucite stripper shoes but upscale.

Also, they would probably smell bad after a hot day.

    • Agreed Ms Flyover. The sheerness of the pump makes the shoe appear cheap, which it most certainly is not. I think sheerness is difficult at the best of times. It just sort of has that I got these at the mall kind of appeal, as opposed to Paris Couture, which is a shame seeing as though they are Dior and she is in PAris.

      • those are some ugly shoes…but I think she insists on wearing vegan shoes, so I guess her options are limited…that netting looks extremely cheap!!! and stinky!

  • TieDye64

She looks lovely, but very awkward as usual. Uncomfortable and awkward.

  • terpsichory

Give her a break! She’s clearly trying not to cry about the fact that someone stole her bag.

Also, someone’s about to steal her coat!

    That would be me…

    • dress_up_doll

I thought the very same thing! What happened to her handbag? She looks fine, but just a bit incomplete. This look is crying for a killer handbag.

  • Laurie Bergman

She should look chic.  Instead she looks like toddlers do when they put a coat on over too many layers…overstuffed and cranky.  And you know that dress is not “too many layers” for that coat.  The shoes are droolworthy.

  • IAmJ

Not sure I would call this modeling… Is she just now learning to walk? I like the trench coat but I just can’t with the constant sour look on her face.

  • Is she scared she’s about to fall over? I love what she is wearing (even the shoes, though I hate those in principle) but a smile would make it WERQ.

  • BazoDee

I think she is working the high fashion dour look. And I love the shoes in concept -on her feet they sort of confuse me a bit.

  • NDC_IPCentral

I guess I’m showing my age, but those shoes just holler “EVENING FOOTWEAR” to me, and they would be fine at some swanky after dark event.  My mother had some wonderful pumps in the 1950s that I always thought of as Cinderella shoes that somewhat harken to these Diors, but even when I was a sprout, those were dress-up shoes.

    • guest2visits

Yes; that black- satin looking dress, and those shoes look like lunch or dinner in a dark, elegant setting.

    • kimmeister

I’m in my early 30’s but I agree with you.  I was wondering where she was going in the middle of the day decked out in those shoes.

  • Calinda_L

I will always love a look based on a trench (it almost doesn’t matter what the rest of the look is). But… you’d think they could have tailored the coat a bit so the sleeves actually fit her.

  • Spicytomato1

My favorite elements, in descending order:
    1. Legs
    2. Shoes
    3. Dress
    4. Coat
    5. Makeup
    6. Hair

Put them all together and they don’t quite work, unfortunately. But I’ll definitely give her props for working #1, 2 and 3!

  • Lilithcat

That trench coat is pretty boring.  But then, trench coats generally are.  Seriously, why would anyone pay Dior prices for a coat that you can find in any store anywhere (and have been able to for decades)?  In fact, there’s probably one just like it in the back of your closet!

    Love the shoes, though.

    • mom2ajs5

I totally agree. There are some fabulous trenches out there, but this one is just basic. Looks just like the one in the backseat of my car!

    • TheOriginalLulu

Yup, I’m in total agreement on that trench. My personal rule is never pay full price for something if it isn’t special enough, and there is nothing special about that trench. However, I’m not much of a label fiend to begin with and I’m certainly not a wealthy movie star. Not that she actually paid for that thing, of course.

  • RebeccaKW

LOVE the shoes.  She looks pissed off.  Must be the bad hair day.  Cheer up, Natalie, we all have those.

  • shirab

She looks oddly like Brooke Shields in that second photo.

  • plinkiedoodle

Unwritten rules for Americans in Paris:  never wear athletic shoes, never smile while walking down the street.  Thought you would know that, mes amis.

    • melizer

I always forget, that’s what I hear celebs on talk shows say about Chicago, “What the F is everyone so smiley about?”

  • beebee10

    This is a total WERQQQ!

  • LesYeuxHiboux

Did her baby disintegrate at birth?

    Love those shoes.

  • The length of the coat sleeves, sad hair, and woe is me face are all making me twitch.  House of Dior, please send me down a Paris sidewalk modeling your wares.  I’m sure somehow I could find the strength to smile for the cameras.

  • SapphoPoet

I dunno. The shoes are okay, but the dress looks sad and the trench looks unremarkable. She looks like she’s having to concentrate really hard on walking. Makes it all seem very tentative.

  • poggi

Natalie, since you are an actress and all, ACT like you are having fun.

  • Elizabeth Silverstein

Sleeves need to be shortened, needs a simpler lbd, a great bag and some big ol’ sunglasses. If she had all that going for her, I may not have even noticed her hair. Otherwise, she just looks awkward.

  • mhleta

She looks great, but I agree. The dress/shoes say evening and the trench says day. She could use a b-bang necklace, too. As far as the face goes, I think it should be mandatory for every facialist/dermatologist/plastic surgeon to spend at least three weeks away from LA so they can remember what real people are supposed to look like.

  • J D

I wish the sleeves on her coat were just a smidge shorter.  But she does look beautiful, if a bit dour.

  • Did she have an upper facelift? Chupacabra! and I love N.Portman!

  • MK03

Didn’t she leave Dior after Galiano ran his stupid, anti-Semitic mouth?

    • alyce1213

She spoke out against it, but I think because he was fired immediately and publicly, it was laid to rest and she’s still in the fold.  Note:  the new face of Dior, Mila Kunis, is also Jewish.

  • Oh, come on T-Lo.  She can’t be expected to be smiling every second.  She doesn’t look pissed either, which is more than I can say for some starlets getting their picture taken on the sidewalk.

  • librarygrrl64

I’m usually not a fan of a sheer shoe, but those are gorgeous.

    • Spicytomato1

I’m with you. There’s something Cinderella-esque about them.

  • hughman

I think she’s worried about someone in the office noting she’s late getting back from lunch.

  • Monabel

Paris sidewalks are for dogs to shit on. Just ask Robert Altman.

  • Snailstsichr

In the first picture, I thought her shoes were those sparkly net ballet flats that were for sale on the streets of NYC about 8 years ago. (they came in every color of the rainbow) And now I can’t get that image out of my head.

    • LaLeidi

I bought a pair of those on the street in midtown in 2004! I know exactly what you are talking about.

  • janetjb

    Too much blah.
Why are the sleeves too long?

  • Those sleeves need 2 inches off them. Nuff said.

  • NurseEllen

This is such an uninteresting set of photos, I’m sort of surprised you even bothered to feature it.

  • Sophie Collier

She looks like she’s having trouble walking.  Possibly a poorly fitted shoe?  That’s the face of concentration, there.

  • sk8tfan

What we can’t see is that there is a shark tank just off camera and one slip and she’s doomed, thus the reason for the look of abject terror on a beautiful day in one of the most beautiful cities on earth while wearing beautiful clothes. Or almost beautiful clothes-that sloppy hem! And what is it with stars these days and lack of jewelry? Is she still breast feeding and afraid the little one will swallow an earring?

  • Anne Marie Leahey

Mesh shoes will never NOT remind me of the terrible mesh and sequin slippers sold all over China Town in NY several years ago…gag.

    • PeaceBang

Those were an abomination unto the Lord and probably the reason for every natural disaster we’ve had since then, since God is a picky fashion queen.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

her feet look like they are killing her. probably not the best advertisement for the brand; then again, there should have been some way for dior to predict & preclude this problem.

  • marilyn

Her hair looks terrible.  The rest is fine.  The shoes would look great with the dress.  The trench coat is a trench coat.  If you were rating her, I would give her an 8.  If her hair weren’t such a mess, the score would be higher.

  • BrooklynBomber

It does my heart good to see a movie star with a wrinkled coat and a bad hair day.

  • LambeeBaby

Those shoes are KILLER. I wish I could just stand upright in something like that.

  • Doesn’t she only wear “vegan” shoes? These are cute but I have to say, after I had my son, my feet were never the same– bigger, wider, more sensitive. Sadly, my footwear-age has suffered. I wonder if Natalie is suffering from the same. She sure looks uncomfortable.

    • alyce1213

Hard to tell, but these could be all fabric — even the heels look like fabric-covered wood.  So I dunno.

      • I think they are all fabric. It may have influenced her choice of shoe, I guess is my point. I think they are interesting looking but also look like they hurt.

  • angryparsnip

But why didn’t she wash and brush her hair ?

    cheers,  parsnip

  • jw_ny

Love the shoes, the rest is quite sedate and underwhelming.  The trench coat just looks like any other standard trench I’ve seen…sleeves need shortening.  No purse/clutch?  Shadow next to her must be carrying her stuff…

  • Lisa

    So pretty!

  • She must have been on her way to or from a TV spot because I have never seen her in that much make-up. Or maybe it’s because she was walking straight into the sun and she is trying desperately not to squint. Someone get her some sunglasses STAT!

  • marywv

She looks so unnatural and uncomfortable as if this is staged. Awkward and weird.

  • PeaceBang

She looks like she’s hunching her shoulders up, and since when does Natalie Portman look unpretty? Also, girl, you’re in PARIS. My favorite city in the WORLD. How can you not be, like, skipping and grinning?

  • Susan Crawford

That coat should be in my closet – ASAP! But the shoes – I’ll take a pass, as Miz Natalie looks as though they are (pun intended) sheer torture!

  • EEKstl

I actually love the trench, the shoes AND the dress (tho now that I’m doing a thorough inspection and realizing it’s black and not charcoal I love it less). Still, a nice ensemble.

  • ccm800

    looking like her feet hurt.

    • Maddie_Faddenoid

Yeah, she’s doing the Jon Wayne waddle.

  • LuisaNL

That trench is gorgeous. I want it. NOW! Natalie, why the sour puss?

  • mariavii

You’d think Dior would have someone that could correctly hem a dress.  The hem is so sloppy it looks like one of my “omgMyHemCameDownandiHaveToBeAtWorkIn5” last minute repairs.  Am I the only one distracted by that?

  • KateMaryC

What a terrible hem job on that dress.

  • sagecreek

Those are lovely shoes, but not for city walking.

  • bitterk

I love the shoes too, Yummy

  • meowing

Haven’t read all the comments (bad, bad kitten), but can’t Dior afford a tailor to shorten those sleeves just a skoosh?

  • Oh, to be contractually obligated to Dior…sigh…’re right. She doesn’t look like she’s having a god time. Too bad. Maybe the shoes pinch…

  • TheOriginalLulu

True that, TLo. If my job description included wearing those shoes, you wouldn’t be able to wipe the smile off my face.

  • I wondered if she’s wishing she could wear her line of vegetarian shoes. Maybe something in her outfit is leather, and that’s why the long face.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Those shoes make me weep, I want them soooooooooo bad.

  • nancylee61

She looks old and frumpy. I don’t like this at all!!!

  • Those shoes must be murder on her feet.

  • enchanted216

    I want those shoes!  🙂

  • The sun’s in her eyes, so a little primo-bitchface, but still adorbs!

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Natalie Portman is the female version of Keanu Reeves.  Both are wooden, wooden, wooden.  Blech. But I crave her shoes for my own, I will confess.

  • Samantha Irene

Love the shoes, but they really are an odd choice for day to me. And the face is a total mask…

  • I love her shoes.
