Michelle Obama in Wes Gordon

Posted on April 02, 2012

Oh Shelley. You’re going to make us say it, aren’t you?

First lady Michelle Obama attends the Nickelodeon’s 25th annual Kids’ Choice Awards in Los Angeles in Wes Gordon.

Wes Gordon Spring 2012 Collection

That is entirely too much FLOTUS crotch.

Hey, we didn’t enjoy writing anymore than you enjoyed reading it, okay?

We think it’s great we have a First Lady who attempts getups like these; really we do. But we also think it’s great when we have a First Lady in possession of a full-length mirror. Come on now, FLOTUS. How could you not see what this thing was doing on you?

Ugh. That is terrible on anyone. Not a good look at all. I hate the outfit period, and it it really looks awful on her. She’s got way too much body to be wearing that. I can’t believe she donned that.

  • Carleenml

huh? I loved her in this outfit.

    • Browsery

I must need an eye transplant.  In what way is this outfit flattering?  I should note that I’m usually very supportive of Ms. Obama’s fashion choices.  I thought the kerfuffle over her wearing shorts on a plane was ridiculous.  (She’s not supposed to be comfortable?)

  • serenitynow02

I have to agree on this one. The White House china should be kept in the White House.

    • Pennymac

Haha! Well said!  I was wracking my brain for an appropriate “No” without being hateful, cause I love our Shelly O so much. You hit the nail on the head, SN02!

  • Funkyjuicebox

It’s too bad, cause its FAB otherwise. Maybe if she’d gone up a size??

    • miagain

That top would have been a beautiful dress… lengthen, and connect the front, and that would be a big winner

    • RebeccaKW

Right! From the side, she looks amazing.  It’s that front view that kills it.

    • lilazander

That what I thought too. That jacket looks one her like it shrunk in the dryer, or she borrowed it from Sasha.

  • WHAT?!!!

This outfit is bangin’! It fits her perfectly.

    • AnaRoW

       I agree.

    • Cheri Lee

    • Ya I think she looks hot.

  • It would have been fine with a black pencil skirt but yeah, don’t beat yourself up guys, it had to be said.

  • BazoDee

Exactly! Exactly! Exactly!! The focal point of an outfit should NEVER be the crotch area and unfortunately that is exactly what happened here. I blame the seam. A different pair of pants would have done wonders for this.

    • librarygrrl64

I blame the seam AND the shiny. A pair of black matte pants would have been 100% better. But good on her for taking a risk.

    • cheesebomb

I think the pants are fine, but I think they should have cut the shirt to it fell on her more like it fell on the model – more closed along the front.

  • “That is entirely too much FLOTUS crotch.”

That pretty much says it all.

  • nycfan

I clicked the link planning to post that failing to sit or squat and THEN check pants in the mirror is a classic blunder we all make from time to time and that it is amazing how different a pair of pants can look when you just slide into them and check the mirror versus after having been sitting in a car or at a desk, etc.  But, yeah, here, no such blunder can be blamed.  I think the problem is the top is not fitted properly and should close in front as it does on the model.

  • miagain

oh dear!!  This is her first big no no….

  • The first lady is wearing leggings in public? that just feels a little uncomfortable for everyone involved

  • sad kitty 🙁 if only that top thingamajig was a flowy tunic with no closures in the front this could have been one nifty outfit.

  • GorgeousThings

This should be a Girl, That is NOT Your Look post. Much as I love Shelly O, the seams on those pants are screaming for mercy

  • That raises wrong to an art form!

  • megohd

    Ooh, that’s not cute.

    Taylor Swift is TALL!

    • rkdgal

That was my first reaction!  Who knew that TSwift was that tall?!

    • It was odd to see the FLOTUS standing next to a woman of equal height. We’re so used to seeing her tower over everyone.

  • Love the pants but that is not her jacket.

  • From the first pic, I thought she had a tunic on under the cardigan, because of the color difference. But no? Is the crotch area that much lighter than the rest of the pants? Why?? And why couldn’t she wear a crotch-covering top or tunic? Otherwise, I really like it. But it is puzzling.

ETA- She does look fantastic otherwise and it fits her and the occasion well.

  • I really thought this was a photoshopped April Fools joke post.  Awful.

  • mozzer0906

She needed to go a size up.  It really looked off on her and made her hips look wider (a look most of us try to avoid).  OUT OUT OUT OUT OUT OUT a thousand times OUT.  But props to Shelly O for taking a risk.

    • made her hips look wider (a look most of us try to avoid)”

I’ll take Cultural Differences for 100, Alex.

      • formerlyAnon

Which is why this’d be o.k. if she weren’t the First Lady. Rightly or wrongly, prominent political women & the wives of prominent political men in this country dress on the white (and dowdy) side of the center line.  Most of us here like watching what she wears because she manages to stay within those constraints without being too dowdy.

  • Surely one of the Secret Service agents could have flung himself between her and the guy with the camera because that first shot is a crime!

  • lojoso

Just because you can squeeze into it does not mean it fits. Words to live by!

  • Cool outfit and from different angles it doesn’t look as bad.  The tightness of the pants just makes it look like she has big legs compared to the rest of her body… not flattering.  If it was a straight/unfitted tunic that did not flare out at the hips, it would have been more forgiving and the focus would be back on the cool color and fabrics.

  • Patricia Biswanger

I love the look, but that jacket needed to be altered to accommodate her more generous hips.

  • mmgk

Her hair and make-up look really nice though.

    • fashionablylate

      Agree, she looks so pretty.

  • uprightcitizen

Oh dear. Don’t let those horrible people on Fox News see you in THAT. I also love the idea that she can even attempt such a thing (can you imagine Laura Bush? Or Barbara?). From the waist up, she looks amazing. But south of there? It’s just not done. On second thought … dare them to say something dreadful. They’ll rue the day. 🙂

    • meowing

LOL–would dearly love to see Barbara Bush in this–in red or bright blue , of course!

    • anonamussy

Yeah, Barb & Laura were firm believers in not displaying crotch.  Perhaps it might have been common sense?

      • uprightcitizen

Probably a good point. Didn’t there used to be someone in the FLOTUS office who would have been able to say “um, no?” But the Bush ladies would have looked ridiculous in a more obvious way at a Kid’s Choice Awards ceremony. The former in a dowdy knit dress and brooch, the latter in a prim knit pastel pantsuit. Either way, they would have looked as odd and unrelatable to the kids as the Queen Mother. At least Mrs. Obama has young children, and can undoubtedly talk to them and understand them in a way Barbara Bush hasn’t been able to since the 1830s.

      • Jameela AbdulGhani

but seriously, who wanted to look?

  • Oh, Shelley, O!
    No, Shelley, NO!
The top is too tight.  Looking at how it is meant to hang, from the model shot, that top is meant to be more tunic like and loose, plus the opening is supposed to hang shut in front.
But, Mrs O, you get major props for working with edgier styles.

  • Size up the top, or add more fabric to the lower part, and she would have looked fantastic.  Those metallics are great on her.

    • JaneDC

I agree. The metallics are great for her. I started liking it at the top and then couldn’t figure out what was going on.

  • nannypoo

She was nice to check up on Taylor, who is heavily bandaged from a tragic boob accident, but this is definitely not her outfit.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

They were ‘sliming’ people left, right and centre – I wouldn’t want to wear my ‘best’ outfit under those circumstances!

  • Oh, no. I don’t remember ever seeing a pic of her as distressing as this. I do NOT want her to “attempt getups like these.” She is not a rock star, and even if she wants to pretend to be one in private life, let’s face it, she has no private life right now (and I hope for the next 5 years).

  • CPK1

Oh no!! I like the jacket and the idea of the outfit.  Different pants? A jacket that covered her crotch?

    • dress_up_doll

I know. I like the overall concept and design, but it’s just not working for her. The leggings look too tight and the jacket needs to be a bit looser and she definitely needs more crotch coverage.

  • MissAnnieRN

There is so much I like about this look.  But I just can’t with the amount of torso covered in metallic skinny pant.  That is an amazing jacket.  Maybe she could have put it with a metallic leather skirt and FMB’s?  Are we allowed to refer to those types of boots as FMB’s when discussing FLOTUS?  That felt wrong.  Let me try again – a pair of knee high high heeled boots?

  • formerlyAnon

If the top had met across her front.

If the pants had not been light-reflective.

    If, if, if.

For mere mortals, at this event, perfectly fine. Not so much for the First Lady.

And if that makes me old and stuffy, so be it.

  • I love her in the skinny jeans look but these are a little too high-waisted. Her face looks beautiful as always. I just can’t criticize her.

  • Well, ok. At first I didn’t mind what you were talking about but that first picture, yeah I get it. Still, I think it’s FAB, especially for a FLOTUS! SO awesome…

  • I really like this outfit!  I think she’s youthful and fun in it.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Damn, who thought that would be a good outfit for her?

  • Anathema_Device

I like this on her. The pants could be less tight, but overall I thought she looked very chic and modern.

  • Jecca2244

Oh the pants are a bit too tight. I don’t think it is an awful outfit though. I just think this is a “certain body type” outfit

  • I’m all for the First Lady attending these events, but not in those clothes.  Gorgeous from the neck up.

  • SapphoPoet

I love her top and shoes, but the pants are too much. Maybe this would have worked with some sort of skirt?

  • Kyle Crawford

you guys are all just wrong, and possibly bitter, she looks fantastic!

  • The color is great on her. Everything looks good except from the waist down about a foot!

  • padma sallah

    DA FUCK.

My reaction upon seeing this. No. Just no ShelleyO.

  • DominoEstella

I think she looks just fine.

  • schadenfreudelicious

major kudos for the attempt, but no…if the top had closed as it does on the model i would have no issue with the look, as it is it’s way too crotchtacular for a elegant gal like Shelley

  • lrhoff

    Oh now I’m feeling nauseous…..

  • BazoDee

Can someone explain to me what they did to the top? On the model it looks like it is sheer. Did they line it in two different colors? Because that contrast/seam is not helping with the crotch focus.

  • BazoDee

    double post -whoops

  • BazoDee

    double post

  • brookeinmn

Martha Washington just turned over in her grave. She looks more like First Mistress instead of First Lady.

  • CatherineRhodes

This is the absolute worst I’ve ever seen Shelly O look. Hideous. It will probably end up in Rick Santorum’s campaign ads…

  • Judy_J

If only that tunic fit her the way it fits the model.

  • gabbilevy

The only problem I have with this is right at the waist. If her undershirt was two or three inches longer, this would be 100 percent sassy and appropriate for the venue. As such, it’s 95 percent sassy and appropriate for the venue.

  • MoHub

I has a sad. Oh Shelley, what have you done?

  • I swear, when I saw your preview of this on facebook I though it was an April Fool’s photoshop. It’s so unlike her normal look.  Points for being daring, but – no.

  • jw_ny

Aside from those horribly tight pants on her, and all that crotch exposure…I think she looks great.  The top is good on her, color and cut, and her smile is illuminating as always.

Now that top on Taylor…cringe worthy!  Could she be any more vanilla too?

  • RocknLox

I think we pants are fine. The fact that her shirt looks like a chessboard is another story. All in all I think she looks beautiful and my jaw dropped when I saw this yesterday.

  • beebee10

I know I know, but I still didn’t want to read it.

  • unbornfawn

I don’t care. We have a HOT first lady!

  • lamireille

I watched the Kids’ Choice Awards with my daughter and it was sweet to see the love that Mrs. Obama got from the audience and from Taylor Swift especially.

The pants weren’t flattering, true, but overall it seemed like a good outfit considering the venue–it was modern (jeans are all tight and skinny these days, at least at my daughter’s school) and eye-catching but with subtle colors, and she didn’t look like mutton dressed as lamb.

  • dschubba

Could be worse, but I could have done without the Josh M. crotch zipper.

  • butterflysunita

I have to say I just love that FLOTUS wore this.  She so outshines Taylor Swift in the photos of the two of them together that Taylor is practically invisible.

    • formerlyAnon

But she probably could have outshone Ms. Swift wearing sweats. Old stretched out ones she saves in case she has the barfing flu. Because Ms. Swift may be driven and hard working and sincere [and, talented, though there’s debate on that, apparently] and successful. But compared to Ms. Obama she’s insipid and callow.

  • butterflysunita

I have to say I just love that FLOTUS wore this.  She so outshines Taylor Swift in the photos of the two of them together that Taylor is practically invisible.

  • sagecreek

    Oh, no. Not good.

  • sagecreek

    Oh, no. Not good.

  • Sara__B

Well, bless her heart, as my mama used to say when she was trying to be nice.

I like the outfit on the model, where there’s ease to the fabric. The First Lady definitely needed to go up a size or two, and then have the torso of the tunic taken in. She looks so happy and comfortable and pretty and awful all at the same time!

  • BrooklynBomber

Yesterday I saw a picture of this that was cropped at the hips. I love the top on her, but I was a bit worried about what was going on w/ the pants. Now I see my worst fears were confirmed.

  • kimmeister

It’s a sad day when Taylor Swift looks 3x better than the First Lady.

    • MilaXX

personally I think the FLOTUS looks a thousand times better than another boring Taylor look.

      • kimmeister

        Chacun a son gout.

  • She looks great from the waist up!!!

  • TheOriginalLulu

Now I’m not saying a hippy woman shouldn’t wear pants, just that it behooves her to select her pants a bit more carefully.

  • poggi

I have done this.  Okay, not precisely this, but that thing where you try something on and stand in front of the mirror at a slight angle on your tip toes sucking your stomach in pressing your shoulders back after carefully arranging the material and it looks good.  But (and there is a but) once you move from that carefully constructed pose, the fabric pulls across your stomach or the armholes gape and show way too much of your bra or the skirt rides up…  This doesn’t fit well enough and unlike some clothes where a less than perfect fit is less noticeable, shiny stretch jeans and a jacket like this are not forgiving and will betray you.

    • formerlyAnon

      Oh yes, haven’t we all?

  • I thought she looked perfect- those pants looked amazing on her! I don’t FLOVE the top, but I do think it was a pretty kick@ss outfit.

    • formerlyAnon

But political wives & most political women (be it right or wrong) dress shall we say, conservatively, not to say “like dowdy middle aged white women.”  Most of us here like watching what Ms. Obama wears because she generally stays within the expected constraints (which for the First Lady are often even more conservative) without being dowdy.

That said, for me it’s not that the outfit emphasizes her hips/thighs. It’s that sausage-skin jeans is a look that’s a bit too casual for a public appearance by the First Lady.  That may seem a stuffy way of looking at it, but I guess some of us are stuffier than others!

  • sockandaphone

A+ for effort and for being the most fabulous FLOTUS ever, but yes, this is not flattering on her at all

  • That first photo is ((gulp)) but she recovered nicely after that. I think it’s a super outfit and she looks sharp.

  • MilaXX

I think she looks great. I see the difference on how the top fits the model, but there’s no camel toe so I don’t hate it.

  • I think it looks FABULOUS from the side. From the front… Not so much.

  • Dan_In_NYC

I think she looks fantastic, and that the issue with the pants is they look so “MOM JEANS” because that zipper is like 700 inches long.  If that top just closed a little lower all would be better, we wouldn’t see the MOMishness and we wouldn’t be talking FLOTUS crotch right now.

  • SignLadyB

Oh dear from straight on. But from an angle it looks good. The jacket needed to be more closed like on the model, I think. Still, I agree, isn’t it great to have a daring FLOTUS?

  • fashionablylate

I actually really like this, except for the unfortunate seam pointing to her nethers. Could’ve gone up a size too. But it’s a pretty hot outfit otherwise.

  • Sunshine16

If only they would have added some hook & eye closures (and maybe a bit more fabric) to the bottom!  She looks fab except for the open curtains…

  • Joey Melliza

    Crotch-gate much!!!

  • kirble

Never thought I’d say it, but I am digging the sequined houndstooth.

  • sweetlilvoice

Damn girl, looking good. I hope Mr. O was happy!

  • alyce1213

Oh, that jacket is gorgeous, so cool. I’d LOVE to wear that.

A pair of very slim, but NOT skin-tight, black or dark shiny grey slacks would have been perfect.  Better for the crotch and the thighs.

  • It could have been great, if it fit just a little better.

  • oohsparkley!

So close. I thought she looked hot in the pic where she’s angled and it looks like the top closes.

  • Yea, I love her outfit and thinks she looks amazing. *shrugs*

  • girliecue

How can I ever erase the words “FLOTUS crotch” from my brain?!? Oh, the trauma!

  • Sophie Collier

I think she looks good.  The top was designed for someone with no hips, so yeah, it spreads a bit, but so what?  Don’t fear the crotch, T-Lo.  It won’t hurt you.

  • Jameela AbdulGhani

When I first saw the pic all I saw was SEX! At home, yes. First Lady , no. First Lady at a young person’s event? NO! (But I thought she looked GREAT!)

  • Ogden1990

If I went out in public dressed in this outfit, WITH my teenage daughter by my side, my teenage daughter would KILL me. I love FLOTUS, but she’s trying way too hard to look hip here.

  • snich11

OMG. Giant middle-aged crotch in public–and shiny too! Ghastly. What was she thinking?!

  • Susan Walker

It would not have drawn so much crotch focus if the pants were not so shiny. They were also too tight.  The top is very cool.  Ms. Pinkett-Smith was still the worst dressed mom from what I saw.

  • Laura Valentine

  • Lisa

Girl, that is not your crotch.

(Has anyone else said it?  If so, I’m sorry for being a copy-cat!)

  • elzatelzabelz

Holy unflattering, FLOTUS. Points (very few) for trying.

  • eight_of_nine

Ideally the top should close all the way down the front, but I still think she looks slammin’.

  • quiltrx

I thought she looked awesome!  The pants are a little too tight, but the FLOTUS crotch wasn’t as obvious in motion as it was in these stills (and she was behind a podium most of the time).  I love the top especially, it was a fun look for this venue.

  • If she’d only had it altered so it would be closed all the way down. Would have been really cute!

  • If she’d only had it altered so it would be closed all the way down. Would have been really cute!

  • I’m fine with the look, but you’d have thought she could have had that jacket custom made to fit her.

  • I love it! I thought it was more than appropriate for the night.  I thought she looked great.

  • Agree with comments on the clothes, but I have never, ever seen her look so beautiful!

  • newtonGOTbeaned

For my sanity I have to pretend that this never happened.

  • margaret meyers

She’s reaching here, very unexpected.  Not her best look, but I don’t think it is the disaster you think it is.

  • ccm800

    just. no.

  • Are you really really looking at her crotch? Come now, don’t you play for the other team? How in the world did you put your head in the gutter. **sigh**

  • bitterk

I know she wanted to look current and hip but she actually looks older and less hip in this ensemble.  Hiddy really.  And this from a true fan.

  • What about that red n white jacket worn in London at a pre-olympic event! WTF! There is a PUB in London missing a table cloth!
