Malin Akerman in Victor Costa

Posted on April 24, 2012

Miss Akerman, we have Ringling Brothers/Willy Wonka/Tim Gunn on the line.

Malin Akerman attends the premiere of ‘Giant Mechanical Man’ during the 2012 Tribeca Film Festival in a Victor Costa dress.

They would you like you to return their tent/hot air balloon/rejected entry for Project Runway Season 10.

Bookmark this one, kids. It’s bound to show up on some lists right around the last week of the year.

UFF. What a wrinkly dingy thing.

      • http://twitter.com/TheRedZavodnik Ginger

Not only is it wrinkly and dingy, it’s also terribly unflattering…especially around the midsection.

    • http://twitter.com/OracleKath Kathrine Marlow

There’s the promise of an idea there..but the execution is horrific.

      • kimmeister

        Not to mention the fit!

    • PeaceBang

Oh, great. Now I have that tinkly clown music in my head. But aside from the fact that she looks like a carnival side show, “Behold, The Amazing Wrinkle!” I think the dress had  potential. Pass the cotton candy.

    • bloggertobenamedlater

      Wow. A human pinwheel!

    • sarahofalessergod

Seriously, who is this woman that she’s always on red carpets?  I don’t mean to sound bitchy, I’m just confused.  I know she’s an actress, but nothing on her IMDb/Wikipedia pages points to why she’s constantly at these events in designer dresses.  Am I missing something?

      • AthenaJ

She was the shallow, flaky sister to Katherine Heigl’s character in 27 dresses. Then she was the annoying girl (I can’t even remember the name) in Watchmen. I’ve heard she’s nice but something about her sets my teeth on edge. Though I’ll admit she had a funny scene where she flipped out in 27 dresses. Other than that she’s pretty much just like every other pretty, blond, mediocre actress.

        • RebeccaKW

I enjoy her on Children’s Hospital, on Adult Swim, but then again, that show isn’t very deep.

      • Michelle Newell

         She is in Watchmen.

    • TheLaurenJean

If it wasn’t so wrinkly, I would actually say its pretty fantastic. Definitely not worst of the year category.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=21413366 Evan Hart

Agreed. I think this could have been fun, but it’s executed poorly. There are have been (and mostly likely will be) far uglier and horrifying outfits which will grace the red carpet. This is “meh” worthy, not “worst dressed” worthy.

      • http://twitter.com/The_Bugler Anna Daugherty

Yeah, it’s not that bad. Definitely not a Frankendress or something.

      • 3boysful

I kinda agree.  This is the kind of dress that calls for something dark on top, ie, a brunette, to cap it off.  Not only is Malin blond (at least right now), but THAT HAIR!  Mine looks like that when I come from my killer step interval class–for free!

      • dschubba

I like the idea, but the fit and wrinkles trigger some mental sad trombones.

        • SewingSiren

Oh the LOST trombones, I hear those a lot in my daily life.

          • dschubba

Mind tend to be of the “Price of Right” variety.

      • HomeOfficeGirl

Belly button dress from the GLADD post earlier this week took “worst look of the week/year” by a landslide.  This is all the lumpy and dumpy and wrinkly the kittens say it is, but I agree – HARDLY the most offensive or misguided we’ve seen…

      • birkatbaby

I agree – it’s the fabric.  Imagine this not in satin, but maybe in a knit, or in a woven with stretch.  Could be interesting.

    • http://www.lippsisters.com/ Deborah Lipp

If the midsection wasn’t lumpy and wrinkled, I think that could be a great dress.

    • poggi

Unlike Florence, Malin has a reason to look unhappy.

    • http://profiles.google.com/marteani Barbara Guttman

It wouldn’t be so bad if it were impeccably fitted.  It’s an ok idea of a dress ruined by the fact that it fits her absolutely nowhere.  She looks a little deflated.  Hate the shoes too.

    • MilaXX

This could be great on the right person, but it’s just not fitting her well. It literally looks like she picked it up off the floor and wrapped it around her body. The she compounded the issue with the wrong shoe.

    • janetjb

      Victor Costa should be ashamed.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

it’s that bad? i mean, it’s not great but if it fit her it would just be mediocre. just like the shoes. then again, theres quite an offense in mediocrity but i’m  not sure it’s what you mean.

    • Judy_J

Conceptually it’s not a bad little dress.  I love a pink/black combo.  But this absolutely does not fit her AT ALL.  Lumpy, bumpy, dumpy.

      • oohsparkley!

Pink?  I had thought it was white or off white.  I think it could be a great dress if it fit her and even better if it was black and white (or a stronger pink).

        • Judy_J

Maybe it’s my monitor, or maybe just wishful thinking on my part, but it looks like pale pink and black to me.

    • Anathema_Device

The wrinkling and the fit doom this. The dress itself is okay in concept. And for the umpteenth time so far this week (it is only Tuesday?), I’m going to say a celebrity looks totally washed out. Nude makeup doesn’t have to mean cadaverous, people!

    • SpcilK

It’s really not that bad. The stylist assistant didn’t spend enough time steaming this frock. With the right shoes, make-up, hair- styling, accessories and actor the dress would be really cute.

    • kikisayshi

I actually like this dress. If it fit her at all and didn’t look like she picked it up from the bottom of the laundry pile, that is.

    • http://www.djplaw.com/ Tadiana

This is one big heaping pile of meh.  Maybe “Malin Akerman’s 10 worst looks of the year” worthy, but not worst 10 celebrity looks overall.

    • Kayceed

      This is one unfortunate frock.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1401197785 Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

Dang. Somebody made their stylist MAAAAAAAD!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

The dress isn’t as bad as the hair, make up and shoes.  She’s way too pretty to look this blah.

    • another_laura

Yikes!  What a bad dress and then it’s wrinkled and … just … yech.

    • http://www.filmsbyneptune.com/ Dani Colman

Why doesn’t it fit?  Malin has a gorgeous body – I’ve seen Watchmen!  Tall, slender, well-proportioned, not too boobularly endowed…how hard can it be?

    • SewingSiren

      I don’t hate it.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

I think it’d be cute if the fit wasn’t horrendous.  But then, I’ve had enough caffeine today so I’m feeling generous.

    • guest2visits

Is this a beach towel ?  Or she just wrapped a bulls-eye around her waist; so you can’t miss her.   Pretty awful.

    • http://korilian.livejournal.com/ korilian

This should be a cute design. Why is it so wrinkly and ill fitting?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Karen-Stephens-Bassett/1503492602 Karen Stephens Bassett

      I just had a seizure.

    • Patricia Gillett

Oh man, I hate it when they try to make red carpet dresses out of the bin of discounted fabric rolls at Mood! Listen to Tim… Wait, what? This wasn’t made in 10 hours on Project Runway? Sorry, my bad.

    • tsid2012

Oh, sad face….. That is just tragic.

    • BrooklynBomber

Oh, dear. That IS a Project Runway entry if I’ve ever seen one.

    • NatalieD28

I think if it fit right, it would be pretty awesome. The chest area is just rather unfortunate, though! I would love to see what a better fit would do for this little number.

    • KELLEYKAT

Boy, at first I thought wrinkly, but I think it is PUCKER-y…Concept could have worked, but really, really poor execution and fit. She’s such a cute girl, and she is trying to make it work.  “A” for effort + “F” for the dress= “C-”  At least in my book! :-)

    • Daenyx

Looks like a bad prom dress left to languish (and wrinkle, and fade) on the clearance rack too long.  EW.

      • Pennymac

Yeah, from French Novelty or 5,7,9 at the mall. (Am I to old? Does anyone remember those?)

        • formerlyAnon

          Ahh, 5, 7, 9.  Though today it’d have to be 00,0, and, I don’t know, 2? 1?

    • Ogden1990

Not sure it’s just the fit (and wrinkles) that are ruining the outfit. The illusion the stripes create is that Malin is bulgy in all the wrong places. Also, don’t wear a dress whose hemline draws the eyes to the knees–especially when said knees are wrinkly and bulgy – just like the dress.

    • Bill Curtis

It looks like Jayne Mansfield’s bathmat…after a shower.

    • Judy_S

I was going to say that the stripes etc. are making her look broad, but I don’t mind that. But that dress seems really badly made, as if it were a Project Runway project combining 2 kinds of fabric that should not be combined. It looks to me like this dress would be repulsive on the hanger or a mannequin, because of the construction. It would be nice to see a well-executed version of the dress in order to judge it.

    • TieDye64

It’s fug to begin with, but the fit is atrocious. And the clunky shoes…oh, who cares. Awful.

    • TieDye64

It’s fug to begin with, but the fit is atrocious. And the clunky shoes…oh, who cares. Awful.

    • http://twitter.com/astrosexy єℓιzαвєтн。

I liked it in the preview image on Facebook but I’ve since changed my mind seeing a larger version. It’s a shame because if it wasn’t sloppy/executed poorly it’d be super cute!

    • lifetime_student

Poor dear must belong to a cult that forbids hair brushes, irons, and mirrors.

    • golspie

I like the dress. The bedraggled hairdo, not so much.

    • Michael_Jones

In my best Aunt Sassy, “I don’t need to see THAT!”

    • Renaissance_Man_ATL

Is it vintage Victor Costa from the ’80’s or is Victor Costa really still around and making sh!+y ’80’s-ish dresses???

    • http://twitter.com/herong Heron

It’s not…terrrrible. It just needed to be ironed, then put back on the hanger and then thrown in the trash.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Is it supposed to pucker like that?

    • marilyn

It is not really a bad dress, just wrinkled and does not fit her.  The stylist is at fault.

    • http://twitter.com/boricuaintexas Boricua in Texas

I think the dress concept is not so bad, but it is wrinkly and it fits her badly.  Plus, it’s a not a good dress for her coloring.

    • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

I have to say, I love the *idea* of this dress. It’s bold and geometric without being crazy; the tulip-ish hem is interesting; and I’m not even hating the sweetheart-ish neckline (and I usually detest sweetheart necklines). I don’t think this is bad enough to say it’ll be on a Worst Dressed list.

But I agree the execution was sadly a bit sloppy. I could see this being fabulous if the midsection fit a little better and her hair were sleeker.

    • nannypoo

The strangest part is that she seems so happy about it.

    • funkypeanut

Did she show up at the stylist’s office 5 minutes before she had to leave for the RC and just had to take what was left, even though another actress had wadded it up, stomped on it and thrown it in a corner?

    • sagecreek

Don’t they have steamers there? Wherever there is?

    • Derek_anny

      a) Wonka had a hot air balloon?
      b) I can agree that it is most definitely out.  But I don’t think it’s the design’s fault but that of the execution.

    • rainwood1

Wrong fabrics, wrong patterns, wrong silhouette, and wrong styling on a lovely young woman.

    • alyce1213

Oof.  This is another ugly schmatta to add to the archives or horrible.

    • Caaro3

That is the “Girl-that’s-not-your-dressest Girl-that’s-not-your-dress evah!

    • quiltrx

I like the *idea* of it…but the execution comes off “god-awful wrinkly bath wrap.”

    • whitrome

Every time I see a picture of this broad I vow to put my tweezers away…those thin brows make me twitchy. And yeah, the dress is a no.

    • FlamingJune1967

Hmmm…. I kinda like it.  It’s terribly made, I’ll grant you that.  But the design is quite attractive.

      • TheOtherChristina

I’m with you. I would love to see the pale pink satin switched out for a matte dark blue or charcoal. I think it could be a knockout.

        • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

Good call. The pale pink makes it look like a Hot Topic prom dress, but a matte dark blue sounds promising as hell.

    • bellafigura1

      Blech.

    • Sophie Collier

It probably looked amazing on the runway, size 0 and perfectly smooth.  But on anyone else?  Ick.  Ack.  Blargh.

    • formerlyAnon

This, in my more pessimistic/realistic moments, is what I envision myself looking like if someone actually *did* lend me expensive designer clothes for free.

[Just in case there's any doubt, that doesn't reflect well on you, Ms. Akerman.]

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

Poor thing.  But she smiles in the most divine way…

    • Imasewsure

It’s going to be hard to beat that ugly rag in 2012… although I have faith in Julianne Moore and the Frankendress trend to dredge up something memorable…

    • http://rousku.myopenid.com/ rousku

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Ugh. She looks like she just got out of bed, picked up the first dress crumpled on the floor, and hit the RC. BTW, I don’t think the dress itself is so bad. It would look good on the right person with the right sizing, styling, and steaming, of course. I can see Dita von Teese wearing the hell out of it.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

Huh, I don’t like it, but I didn’t think it was nearly offensive enough to potentially grace the end of the year “worst” lists.

    • Lina_bee

Oh, I don’t see circus tents. I see last night’s dress wadded up in the sheets at the foot of the bed…or else someone spilled something all over her real dress and this was all that could be scrounged. A shame it’s satin. This design in a wrinkle-free weave might be rather good.

    • sleah_in_norcal

she looks a little embarrassed.  i can see why.
