Kevin McHale, Hipster Nerd

Posted on April 16, 2012

Let’s once again offer a Mid-day Man who isn’t a square-jawed Neanderthal with great abs. Let’s go the hipster nerd route, shall we?

Glee‘s Kevin McHale hosts a meet-and-greet at Sugar Factory in LA.

Adorable, but this isn’t quite working for us. Too layered; too many types of collars fighting each other for dominance. And that droopy pocket on the sweater is setting off our OCD. And this may be the first time we’ve made this critique against a man, but the sneakers are too matchy. Actually, the whole outfit is. But even bitches like us have to admit the overall effect is adorable.

We broke down and watched the last episode of Glee OnDemand. Boy, did we ever make the right choice when we dropped that from our blogging roster.

I definitely don’t miss Glee. But I do miss Kevin McHale. He IS cute as a button both in and out of his character.

    • Sobaika Mirza

I decided to give it up when you stopped blogging it (let’s be honest, it’s the main reason I even stuck around past Season 2) but also broke down and watched it the new episode, as an excuse to see Matt Bomer. Hate myself for it.

      • Amanda Gun

I was going to do the same, but I think I won’t after all. It’s so nice to live a life without forcing yourself to watch something you don’t even really enjoy!

      • dharmabum8

He was the best guest star they’ve ever had, hands down. I actually laughed out loud at Glee for the first time in ages.

    • Synnamin

He is just so adorbs! I don’t miss Glee, but I did like the musical numbers. Will I watch next season? Yes. Will I refresh my streaming sites with anticipation to see it ASAP? No.

    • AbbottRabbit

I still haven’t caved in and watched it (I am woman, hear me roar… I can occasionally exercise self control!), and I don’t miss the show itself… but I DO wish you guys were still recapping it so that I could satisfy my morbid curiosity about it.

    • Kayceed

Cutie pie. And he must have just kissed someone – his lips look oddly tangerine-y to me.

      • J C

It’s probably the lollipop – note the obligatory Sugar Factory Couture Pop in the fourth picture. I know from experience the blue ones stain something fierce, making one look as if they are suffering from hypothermia!

    • Pants_are_a_must

An oxford, a too-thin sweater AND a fleece faux-denim jacket? It’s like 3 decades of menswear fighting over one thin torso.

    • FunButNutz

Chippy Diana Agron in a (temporary) wheelchair just about killed Glee for me.

    • Beardslee

You are so right about the collars, especially on the dress shirt.

    • Alli

I stopped watching Glee shortly after the Christmas episode where the gym teacher dressed up as Santa because the secondhand embarrassment I was feeling for all of the actors was too excruciating. I do miss my little hipster nerd, though – him and Other Asian. Yum.

Also, are those glasses really prescription or does he just wear them so people recognize him?

    • VioletFem

What’s the weather like in LA right now? That outfit has an awful lot of layers for mid-April.

      • Laura

        it’s been chilly

      • greyhoundgirl

        60s lately, my kid reports.

        • Roman000

60 is considered cold? Here in Michigan, that’s Spring Break weather. :)

          • greyhoundgirl

Yeah–in Boston, too–except for this year!

    • butter nut

someone put this outfit together on a hanger & made him put it on, without editing a thing.  this is how to dress a ken doll, not a human man.

    • Sara Munoz

What made you break down? Curiosity about Matt Bomer? I admit that’s the only reason I watched. And aside from him, I wish I hadn’t. Sooo. Bad.

    • ampg

I’ve completely accepted Glee’s slide into the lower spectrum of broadcast-television-mediocrity (I remember with wonder the days when people actually got upset that there were too many quote-worthy moments for one recap), but I will say that I thought Matt Bomer was really funny in this episode.

      • MilaXX

Agreed Matt giving us cheesy salesman was the best part of the ep.

    • Laura

Agreed re collars. Woulda been great without the white shirt. The jacket is cute.

    • Laura

So you’ve given up on SMASH, too, I see? Have to agree with that…

    • Addicted2Glamour

Stewie nailed the Hipster look to the cross when he said, in character, “I wear short sleeve shirts over long sleeve shirts over short sleeve shirts.”  And I’m sick to death of these people in L.A. wearing all these layered clothes when IT’S SEVENTY FIVE DEGREES OUTSIDE.

      • muzan-e

It’s hard to laugh around a mouthful of sushi, but damned if you didn’t just make it happen.  *g*

      • siriuslover

I’ll grant you that, but I do have to say that when the sun goes down in LA it gets quite chilly, especially with the sea breeze.

    • RebeccaKW

Normally, I think he’s cute.  Not really my type, but cute.  Here, however, I think he looks terrible.  I think maybe the glasses are too big for his face.  Or maybe they are the wrong shape?  I also don’t care for the clothes, either.  No love for this.

      • rawrgrowlrawr

In the world of hipsters, glasses are never too big.

    • kirble

What’s nerdy about him here? The glasses?

In fact, what’s hipster about him here? The glasses?

    • muzan-e

Is that a lollipop or a pen?

Either way, though, teaming it with that little grin is unsettling. *boggle*

    • MilaXX

I usually like his looks and I’m a gal who is attracted to the nerd types, but he looks all of 12 here.

    • Cate

I still wish you’d blog it (finish out the season!) but I love that you admitted you broke down and watched Glee anyway :) how about picking up GCB. I literally watch that show thinking “I wonder what TLo would say?” I think you’d love the women.

      • lordandtaylor

Love, love, love GCB! So many quotable quote. So many memorable scenes. So many cute guys.
“Praise the Lord right back at you.”

        • Cate

I love Cricket. I’ve decided she’s my favourite. and I love how they throw bitchy comments at each other as naturally as they breathe, and they’re still best friends. they’re so passive aggressive they should teach a class. it’s amazing.

      • Adriana_Paula

I watched GCB and enjoyed it until the Annie-Potts-making-out-in-the-bushes-with-the-widower moment.  It made so little sense that that character would ever behave that way that I was done.

        • Cate

I did think that was odd. I mean, if you turned the lights out, WHY NOT STAY INSIDE. but that said, if i quit a show every time they did something stupid well… i’d never watch tv.

      • sashaychante

I’ve been watching GCB too.  Last night was funny with the church play.  Some pretty hilarious moments.  Some episodes are better than others, but overall, I like that the show is NOT attempting any PSA, and is just going for funny…no excuses.

        • Cate

I LOVE it. like legit. I thought i wouldn’t since it’s all bible thumping, gun toting, republicanism, but seriously, i LOVE it. the women are FUNNY and independent and strong. they’re HUGE bitches, but that’s what makes it fun!

    • guest2visits

Nice smile. The stripes are killing me; otherwise,- cute.

    • elleg929

His closed-mouth smile freaks me out.  He looks creepy.

    • Rachael Burgower

I’m glad you dropped Glee too did you drop Smashed? If so can yall pick up once upon a time since I know you like it to begin with and their fantasy land fashion kills?

    • Me Again

Yeah, Glee sucks now.  It’s so sad.  I’m like 5 episodes behind on my DVR and I have next to no desire to watch those episodes.  I will probably force myself to watch through the end of the season, just to see them all graduate, and then take it off my DVR for next year.  Sadness.  It was one of the best pilots ever, and the first season was so fun.

    • Sara__B

Adorable, yes, but the absolute opposite of effortless. Please don’t get obviously pretentious and vain, Kevin!

    • SapphoPoet

Awww. He’s so adorkable! I do agree with all your points, although I LOVE his glasses. (I tried to get my husband to get some frames like that, but to no avail.)

When I first looked at the 4th photo, I thought he was holding a lollypop.

    • paultoes

He always looks like a young Ted Allen.

      • SignLadyB

Ohhh, hadn’t thought of that but you’re right.

    • lordandtaylor

The droopy pocket is the first thing that caught my eye. The whole sweater looks funky. Kev: FOLD YOUR SWEATERS…no wire hangers!
Kev’s pants look oddly fit. Love his glasses.

For gosh sake, STAND UP STRAIGHT!

The Glee cast is out and about trying to build up interest now that the show is back on the air for 6 new episodes.

    • Judy_J

      Geeky ‘n cute.

    • Gayer Than Thou

I don’t know why this fascinates me as much as it does, but he’s actually wearing prescription lenses.

Also, like you, I watched Glee this week.  Totally regret it.  Luckily, the internet is full of sites that will glean the best numbers and post videos, so I really don’t ever have to watch it again.

    • juliamargaret

I understand why you don’t to blog Glee. But I miss reading your write ups; so nice to have a succinct answer to why the show is no longer watchable, rather than all the eye-rolling and yelling at the TV I’m doing at home.

    • Violina23

I stopped watching too, but I read the recap on AvClub — they author seemed to be kind to it because he liked Matt Bomer, but the comment section pretty much confirmed that I made the right decision.  I like my characters to break out into song for fun reasons, and not as part of a glorified weekly PSA.    I admit, I’m curious how things are going to “turn out” for the characters, but it began to feel like a chore to watch it towards the end, and I don’t miss it.

    • ccm800

You certainly DID make the right choice. I made a deal with my partner to watch until the season finale….please hurry – it has gotten worse.

    • Lauren Lynch Fox

      the jacket has to go.

    • newtonGOTbeaned

Kevin McHale is the cutest! But, really, you’re not going to blog the Matthew Bomer episode? I believe that it’s completely sucky, but he’s so ridiculously good looking I might watch it. Please?

Also, it has been rather chilly in LA lately. I’ve been hibernating in a blanket pile, so I understand Kevin’s layering.

    •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Klunky layering, but he still gets an “Aw, puppy!” from me.  Cute.

    • mjude

he looks cute. i guess i am not going to quit glee, i still want to attend graduation.

    • LuvLy01

So whats up with Smash? Are yall not going to recap the last episode with Uma Thurman waltzing in?

    • ZnSD

indeed. jumped the shark in a wheelchair, no less.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

He’s adorable.  Love the entire look.

    • greyhoundgirl

He is so cute–looking here like Mo from “Dykes to Watch Out For”.

    • Nels P. Highberg

Anyone know what brand of jeans that is?

    • joe_tey83

I broke down and watched too. And I am going to watch this week too.

I miss bitching about Glee. I’m sick. I need to go to Glee Anonymous.

(That Quinn storyline is pure shit.)

    • Michelle Young

      Totally agree!

    • Celandine1

How cute, Waldo changed his colors and lost his beanie.

    • Austen Jane

LOL I didn’t even notice that you stopped blogging about it! I stopped watching it a while ago, and I guess I stopped reading about it at some point, too.

    • snarkykitten

no. he just looks like a douche.

    • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

Say what you want but you just know he gets so much ass it’s not even funny.

    • CarolinLA

Matt Bomer’s performance was so spectacular.  The bad acting advice, hugging Blaine and trying to remember the feeling so he could reproduce it – hilarious.  And is so beautiful to look at.  Scrumptious.

      • ampg

“My commercial’s on hiatus for a few weeks.” Brilliant!  And he also held his own against Darren Criss in the musical numbers, which is kind of hard to do, IMO.

    • Lina_bee

All those collars are making me dizzy. But he’s in LA. WHY is he wearing 3 layers? Annnd, yeah. I broke up with Glee after the first half of S1 and I’m so glad I never went back.

    • GTrain

It’s hipster overload for me (the hair AND the glasses AND the sneakers AND…)

    • ElitheMonkey

So much potential ruined by so much hipster.

    • Louise Bryan

It’s a shame his hand is stuck in his pocket.  Probably old candy….

As for the nerd effect, the outfit looks like he’s trying too hard.

    • prettybigkitty

What is the orange bedazzled thing he is holding in the fourth picture?

      • Phyllis Craine

        I want to know too!

    • ChaquitaPhilly

Cute outfit but how old is he REALLY?

    • Shawn EH

      Too many sweaters.

    • howdoilook

Well, I hope y’all are at least *watching* GCB if not blogging it. Amazing, hilarious cast and lots of fab fashion!

    • Cheri Lee

I am still in shock that you guys don’t blog about Glee anymore then again I didn’t even notice that you stopped until you mentioned it on twitter. I gave up on that show at the beginning of the season. It was as if a million pounds was lifted off of my back.

    • Jessica O’Connell

Not to troll, but I think you guys should check out the Glee cover of “My Love is Your Love.” The plotlines of the show are still suffering, but that was one of those pretty great Glee performances that we don’t see quite as often anymore. If I didn’t enjoy the music so much, I’d probably stop watching like you did; but I guess I’m a glutton for punishment because I’m still watching!
