Katharine McPhee in Beverly Hills

Posted on April 25, 2012

Hi Katharine. Why the sheepish smile? Are you still embarrassed by that Bollywood number? You should be.

But hey, your outfit is really super-cute, even though none of the pieces really look like they belong together. Lorenzo says he hates your earrings, though. Tom thinks he’s being silly.

Aw, don’t go away mad, now. We said you looked cute, didn’t we?

Lorenzo is wrong. Tom is right.

    • j_anson

Yes, this is unsettling my world. I usually agree with Lorenzo when there’s a difference of opinion. 8

    •  I want those earrings and I don’t even like big earrings.

  • hughman

I bet Uma Thurman’s character gave her those shoes.

  • It’s fine, just fine. Nothing to get worked up about in any way.

    • Nelliebelle1197

I met Anthony from Project Runway at the grocery store the other day. Somebody make a PR comment so I can tell you what he said without highjacking a thread

      • BrooklynBomber

You know, I was just thinking about how those pink shoes don’t go with the rest of the outfit, and wondering if she got them off the Bluefly Accessory Wall. How’s that?

        • Nelliebelle1197

OMG, speaking of PR, I was at the Whole Foods and guess who was buying fresh press juice? Miss Anthony! After we squealed at each other for 10 minutes and jumped up and down, I asked him how earth the show could be so obvious about the Mondo win. I told him I couldn’t even watch the last four episodes. He just got a LOOK on his face and said (and I paraphrase slightly due to old age memory loss): “GURRRRL, we kept telling those producers that stuff wouldn’t fool the audience. I knew it!”
          So there.

          • Spicytomato1

Lucky you! I think I would have been smiling the rest of the day after that!

          • Ha! Love it!

          • The poor thing would’ve had to pry himself from my hug.  I’ve always wanted to hug him!  Doesn’t he look like a good person to hug?  LOL  You’re definitely a lucky girl!

          • Nelliebelle1197

             He is beyond adorable!

          • introspective

Great story! totally jealous too!!! where’s your whole foods? anywhere near mine in Columbus Circle (NYC)?? I’d totally go to yours and “hang out” till I run into him cause I loves me some Anthony…

          • Nelliebelle1197

He is not in NYC. Put it this way, he is the in the same town as Mychael (or however he changed it) Knight 🙂

          • AmyAW

Ok, now I have to start stalking all the WF’s in the area. Of course, I’d be totally stupid and keep looking at him like I know him from somewhere but not be able to place him. I’m so bad with people out of context!

          • adnama79

I’m so glad I randomly clicked on this photo of a celeb I don’t really care about on a show I stopped watching so I could read your story!

You just made my very bad day much better.

  • MilaXX

That Bollywood number was Glee levels of bad,
I like the dress, she just needs to lose the jacket and the bag. I can cut her some slack on the earrings.

  • SneakyKitty

Aw, I liked the Bollywood number, in a gawking-at-a-roadside-accident kind of way.  For some reason the fact that none of these pieces are supposed to go together makes me like the outfit even more.

    • Emmyllou

I liked it too. I don’t know why, I just did.

      • PhillyDeb

I actually loved it.  I didn’t really understand it but I thought it was a load of fun.  I just kept giggling throughout the whole thing.  And both my daughter (a dancer) and I thought that Karen and Dev did much better with the Bollywood dance than do most of the real dancers on So You Think You Can Dance

        • fursa_saida

The number was executed okay, it was just so stupid and obvious. Like, they spent the first half of the scene making Rebecca look like an asshole for not knowing anything about Indian food and clearly being uncomfortable with the whole concept–with the exception of Bollywood. And then they leap straight into a Bollywood number, because of course Dev could ONLY express himself musically in that way.

But worse than the heavy-handedness of the number itself is that it did nothing to help tell the story–if anything, it detracted from the story. They cut straight back to the restaurant and it’s like, what even happened while Karen was hallucinating? And why was everyone else, including people she’s never met, also present? Musical numbers have to help tell the story. In, say, Moulin Rouge, when Ewan MacGregor and Nicole Kidman are literally dancing among the stars, it’s equally fantastical, but you know exactly what’s happening.

Man, I guess I had stronger feelings about this than I thought!

          • Nelliebelle1197

I have this show saved on my DVR. Should I watch or not?

          • fursa_saida

You mean the whole series, or this episode? If it’s the whole series, I say yes. A lot of the lamer stuff is worth it to me for when they actually stage or perform an actual Broadway number–not even necessarily with all the production, I mean more the style of performance and song–because they capture the magic of that brilliantly. I also don’t find ALL the subplots as boring as TLo seem to; some of them I quite like.

This particular episode kind of sucked, though, if you ask me. Worst of the series. The only redeeming part was watching Derek yell at Rebecca.

          • Nelliebelle1197

Whole series. I gave up on Glee and am now gunshy!

          • fursa_saida

Welp, I say yes, but only you can know for sure!

          • JMB_edits

Can I just make a “tech” complaint about the number, in several shots it looked like Dev was “keyed in” and wasn’t a part of the scene with the rest of the dancers (light was a little different on him, etc).  Made me wonder if he had more trouble executing the dance and they had to add him later.  Mostly hated the number except for the moment when Ellis pops in and steals the jewelry was hilarious.
I’m guessing they were so heavy handed with the peanut thing was so that we don’t miss out on the upcoming moment when someone slips her a peanut and she goes into anaphalactic (sp?) shock  (upcoming promos had someone yelling, “she can’t breathe”, remember?

  • Lerae Kroon

YES I was starting to thing we wouldn’t get a snide comment about that horrific number. Should have known better, you never disappoint.

  • Marc Naimark

I loved the number! Loved! Dev did something interesting for once, it was big and bold and the song is pretty darn great. It’s definitely earworm material.

    • Thank you! I loved it so much, I think every show needs to do a Bollywood dream sequence. Including Law & Order. No, especially Law & Order!

  • “This old thing?!? Why I only wear it when I don’t care how I look.” — Violet Bick

  • Amy

I was hoping I had accidentally taken some Mad Men style LSD when that Bollywood number came on. You mean it really happened? Darn.

  • marilyn

I am more concerned that the dress is see through.  It needs a slip or lining of some sort.  It probably does not look nearly as good if she is standing still.  She is not working, and is not at any type of official function.  This is okay for errands.

I can understand why she is dressed with a jacket over such a light weight dress. It can be confusing to dress for the weather in LA. I live north of there and sometimes am muddling over whether is is going to be hot or cold. At least it doesn’t look too bad.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

the weather here has gotten extremely weird. if it aint global warming, the climate is sure is changing in some totally bizarre way: ninety degrees two days ago, rain or close to it today &, supposedly, tomorrow. it was supposed to storm today.

i no longer think starlet-people are just trying to drag attention to themselves when they wear things that seem inappropriate. it’s impossible to tell, at least weatherwise, what is appropriate these days.

  • oohsparkley!

Cute! Casual.  I think I’d like that dress.  Yes – a mullet hem.

  • StelledelMare

I actually quite liked the Bollywood number but I have a weakness for those kinds of things

  • Sara__B

Her center-part hair and the earrings look way too 1970 for me, and I hate mullet hems, but, damn, that’s a pretty lady!

  • efishfan

That jacket is sooo Dress Barn.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

her earrings are okay if not special. most of the rest of her outfit is about the same order, although i do like a train that doesnt hit the ground. she’s pretty. but boy, oh boy, do i despise her shoes.

  • MzzPants

I felt bad for Dev, that the Bollywood thing was his first musical number so far.

    McPhee looks cute.

  • TieDye64

Now see, the earrings look fine to me. Not really digging anything else here.

  • Tigrrl

The dress is cute, and very L.A; but I think those shoes and the jacket are just wrong. The shoes are too heavy looking for a beachy dress, and the jacket looks a tad too secretarial to me. I wouldn’t wear the earrings, but they’re right for the dress and a young woman. Being an Old, I remember them too well from the first time around!

    • I love you for using the word Old as a noun.

  • amy_raks

The Bollywood number was ridiculously placed. If Karen & Dev had gone to an Indian party/wedding/etc. then it could make sense. Smash is trying my patience with some of those superfluous scenes. The show could be so much better!!!!!!

  • unbornfawn

I’m with Lorenzo on the earrings.

  • kimmeister

The jacket doesn’t fit on the shoulders, but it is cute.  Love the shoes, hate the mullet dress.

  • Jecca2244

that blazer belongs to another outfit.

  • IAmJ

Agree with Lorenzo on the earrings. The rest is cute enough.

  • judith traherne

Cute dress. Jacket is all wrong tho’, much too pedestrian.

  • Sashagrrl

Totally reminds me of a logic game called Set, where you match three cars on attributes, like color, pattern and shape. It’s a ‘set’ when the attributes don’t match, too, like blue, stripes, and diamonds. Katharine wins!

  • gabbilevy

As a standalone, I thought the Bollywood number was a lot of fun. In the context of the show, it left me scratching my head. I like that her blazer has stripes in the lining–she looks cute.

  • guest2visits

Don’t like those earrings either Lo; or the jacket. But i love those pink pumps, immensely.

  • alyce1213

The ‘pop of color’ shoe is starting to get dicey, with some celebrity misfires.  I don’t like Katharine’s choice — too much.  Maybe a deeper tone, more subtle but still vibrant.  The woman next to her did it better.
I’m with Tom on the earrings.  I don’t usually like big ones especially for daytime, but the shape of these works well vs stripes.
In spite of the fact that I really don’t like hi-lo hems, I think she looks quite nice.

  • prettybigkitty

Lorenzo, don’t take this the wrong way, but I think Tom is my favorite gay uncle.  I tend to agree with him more during your fights. Sorry, still love you tons.  Kisses!!

  • As soon as the Bollywood number came on I knew TLo Smash postings were over. Sigh.

  • the Bollywood number was amazing!  before someone criticizes that number, they should ask themselves if they could do it better!  i think not!

    • What does who can do it better have with the fact that they slapped a freaking Bollywood number into a show about Broadway! As if the silly stereotype of Uma Thurman’s character wasn’t enough?  what is supposed to explain the Bollywood number, the fact that Dev is Indian? Well now, there’s your shallow…

Between that and A.Huston character acting like she’s 16, I’m done with the show…. Missy Karen looks cute here though

  • The earrings are the only part I like.  Well, except for the jacket’s color.  I love that shade of blue.  I hate the shoes, and I really worry about the paparazzi seeing London and France in that dress.

  • (sheepishly): hey…i liked the bollywood number…

  • OK,
Nelliebelle1197 here’s your PR opportunity. We’re dying to hear your Anthony story.

  • While the neon pink shoes are a bit too much pop, I think she’s adorable.

  • fursa_saida

In the first picture, the way the wind is blowing the jacket back makes it look like the hem of it is curved, rather than having square corners. When I thought that was the jacket she was wearing, I loved this outfit. Now that I see it’s got a normal hem, which is sitting too low on her to play well with the dress–it would be fine with jeans, but with this it’s doing weird things to her waist–I don’t like it nearly so much.

  • Spicytomato1

Surprisingly cute ensemble. The mullet aspect of the dress initially gave me pause but I’m OK with it. I think it works better than if the hemline was short all around. Looks comfy yet stylish. Not that you asked but if you had I’d say she’s in.

  • sagecreek

Oh, so cute, except for the Chadwick’s poly-blend blazer.

  • Those shoes are wrong.

  • I want that entire outfit! LOVE

  • What is with the mullet dresses for this summer?

  • Rebecca Johnson

The bad posture is giving me eye twitches.

  • Lina_bee

Aww, the “is this really my life now?” facial expression is sort of endearing, isn’t it?

  • TheOriginalLulu

I’m not a fan of mullet hems, but damned if she’s not pulling that dress off looking cute and casual. Go Kath!
I think the earrings are fine. She’s got bigger problems here with the shoes and the jacket. They’re both kind of ugly frankly, and the royal blue and pink look a little juvenile (and a lot tacky) together.

  • Pinwiz

Sorry, the Bollywood number was a blast.  I was skeptical at first but it quickly became fantastic.

  • Hey, I have that blazer.  It’s Alice + Olivia.  I think she looks super cute.
