Kat Graham Gets Theme-y

Posted on April 12, 2012

Kat has thoughtfully provided us with an excellent example of the themed red carpet dress. The idea behind the themed red carpet dress is very simple: match your outfit to the genre of movie you’re attending. Romantic comedy? Flirty, girly dress. Serious Oscar-bait drama? Black or navy sheath dress. Low-brow comedy? Something brightly colored that shows off your tits.

And superhero movie premiere? Why, a supervillain dress! Behold… BEETLE WOMAN! Scourge of Justice!

Kat Graham attends the premiere of “The Avengers” in LA in an Alpana & Neeraj gown.

She really should’ve gone the extra mile and rolled a giant ball of dung onto the RC.

It looks as uncomfortable as hell, but really, where else would you wear a dress like that? Maybe it’s the sparkly blue that’s blinding me, but I like it.

    • Louise Bryan

Yes, it does look like a misery to wear.  But I suspect we are seeing more of a Japanese beetle, something that hangs around beautiful things, and is, indeed, beautiful in her own way, if a tad scary.

    • I’m sorry, maybe this will get me tossed, but I’m not mad at this dress. She’s kinda killing it.

  • Is that dress made of fiberglass???

  • JasmineAM

I sorta-kinda like the dress. I LOVE the make-up, even though I think I’m a bit biased to a nice royal blue.

    • Jessica Rowe

I agree. I kind of really like this dress.  Maybe it could do without the bottom bit but it’s really rockstar and fierce.

  • At first glance I thought Joshua McKinley did this one.

  • jw_ny

    Hahaha!  Excellent punchline!  XD

  • It’s an homage to Jaime Reyes, the current Blue Beetle (a DC superhero).

    • Terence Ng

      Beat me to it.

      • DCSheehan

Jaime wouldn’t be caught dead in this dress.

        • Terence Ng

But a more lascivious Rule 63 version might.

  • It looks like it stopped mid Transformers-style transformation from flowing evening gown to Mecha-Death-Gown.   In any case – Yuck.

    • Celandine1

        mid-transformation Mech-Death-Gown … genius

  • stilly001

I’m sorry, maybe this will get me tossed, but I’m not mad at this dress. She’s kinda killing it.

    • JDreesen

by the look on her face in most of these snaps, i’d say the dress is the one doing all the killing.

(not that it isn’t artistic and fierce and all that…but girl is either uncomfortable in that getup or pissed at her stylist)

      • stilly001

You’ve never seen a bitchface on the red carpet? You must be new.

        • JDreesen

that doesn’t say bitchface to me though.  more like…bitingcheekface.  or…dentalnumbinggelface.

but i am willing to concede because you think i could be “new” which i will -for my own purposes – equate with being “young” and therefore take it.  hee heeeeeeee

          • stilly001

touche! if new = young then you definitely win in this verbal sparring match. 🙂

  • Wow! This is fun to look at. Not so much if you need to wear it and sit down I guess…

  • So glad I read that description before I scrolled down to see the exoskeleton… er, dress.

  • butterflysunita

I have no idea who she is but she’s very beautiful.  She almost–but not quite–makes this ridiculous dress work.

  • it would have been a better design if the satin-y drapes weren’t attached to the plastic-y bodice. competing textures in this case are just to weird…not good…

    • RebeccaKW

I agree.  The bedskirt is what really kills it for me.

    • I KNOW, I just want to yank that ragged wrinkly mermaid hem and make it a cocktail dress.

  • Athenrein

Without the bottom part it would be kickass. As is, I still like it. But I’m a geek and will be seeing this movie even though I can’t really afford to go to the movies these days, so.

    •  This could have worked as a mini, though it would be pretty costume-y

      • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

        It WOULD BE pretty costume-y???

  • I think it is pretty cool. Her body still looks great. You’ve got to be in shape to pull off something with that much bulk.

  • Susie Pamudji

I think she’s looking pretty fierce and really owning that dress. The dress itself doesn’t offend me either, though the bottom could be a bit less sad.

  • aristida_girl

“Behold… BEETLE WOMAN! Scourge of Justice! ”  I love you guys :  )

  • BrooklynBomber

Good for her! I’d like it better without the satin bedsheet at the bottom, but other than that, what the hell, why not.

  • what is that massive amount of fabric coming out the bottom, is me or does that look strange to anyone else?

  • hughman

She’s probably relieved any drink spilled on her that night would bead up and roll off.

  • A-MEN. That is just….eyes…bleeding…and how uncomfortable/sweaty that bodice must be…eeewww….

  • She shoots lasers out of her nipple shields.

  • Judy_J

“…..ball of dung…” the perfect accessory for that dress.

  • Anathema_Device

You guys are killing me. Too funny!!  The exoskeleton of that dress looks Tranformer-y, like the layers can retract and re-form into that shiny ball dung you’re longing to see.

ETA: I would like this dress better as a minidress with no chiffon crap at the bottom. And she is sporting the flesh-colored lipstick that freaks me out!

  • It’s not just a franken-dress, it’s a MECHA-franken-dress!

  • Terence Ng

Actually, I might imagine that as a semi-costume for an evil, female, Swords and Sandles Blue Beetle. She just needs an equivalently evil, female, Swords and Sandles Booster Gold bestie.

  • I love this kind of a dress.  It’s fantasy without being costumey to me, and the makeup is gorgeous.  I want her eyeliner.

  • kimmeister

    The girl’s got killer arms.

  • I love it! All except the sad little bedskirt at the bottom

  • Ogden1990

Is it possible for eyes and boobs to be too matchy matchy?

  • julnyes

that dress is a giant ball of dung

  • i dig it. and if you CANT wear this dress to the premiere of a big super hero movie, then when can you? I think its cute.

    • It’s  a superhero movie?! I thought it was a remake of the ’60s English TV series and couldn’t figure out who was playing Emma Peel.

  • I don’t like how different in colour the train is. It just ends up looking like a last minute after thought that was stapled on. And not a huge fan of matching your eye make-up EXACTLY to your dress.

  • Eva_baby

Actually, I think she is killing this!  Love the Death Stare.

  • TieDye64

Damn, that looks so uncomfortable. You can’t accuse this of looking dull. Rip off the satin tablecloth that’s tacked on to to the bottom of the dress and it’d be a lot better.

  • If A.B.S. decided to knock off vintage Thierry Mugler, that dress would be the result.

  • Rand Ortega

She looks like a 1974 lowrider.

  • crash1212

Yeesh. Dress as exoskeleton. Not cute.

  • snarkykitten

I like it. Beats the shit out of your typical, gauzy gown. Hate the hair, though.

  • marilyn

I like it.  It almost looks like something a woman would wear in that type of movie.  Kudos!

  • Mexxoo

“Behold… BEETLE WOMAN! Scourge of Justice!  She really should’ve gone the extra mile and rolled a giant ball of dung onto the RC.”
Okay, that brought out several snorts of laughter!  Nicely done, gentlemen!

  • Adriana_Paula

    Bitchface Beetle Woman?

  • formerlyAnon

Like the eyes. Shoulda gone farther in the “Eartha Kitt as Catwoman” direction.

  • IMNAngryLiberal

Why can I never find a dress like this when I’m looking for a special occasion frock?

  • HAHAHAHAHA Oh God, that last line made me spit out my drink. You guys are the best.

  • guest2visits

I’m getting the impression she’s hating every second of this; does that mean she had no choice about what she gets to wear?

  • bellafigura1

    Is it plastic?

  • Pannyx

Surprisingly I like this. She is working the hell out of it. Takes confidence to wear a dress like this.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

i loved this dress on GFY & i love it here. only criticism i have is the one everyone has across the board: it would be better were the drippy navy sheet not hung below the carapace. still, it’s so rare to see something eerie scary flashy & interesting that i can certainly ignore the built in bed linen.

  • Lisa

Oh, that’s just a big, fat, stiff, scratchy, uncomfortable looking NO!

  • quiltrx

I think it’s kind of awesome until you get to the cooch flap.

  • SewingSiren

Fabulous! Is it a Thierry Mugler? It sure looks like one.

  • Monabel

  • This dress, to a superhero-themed movie premiere? Perfection. Fashion should be ridiculously fun.

  • MzzPants

BAHAHAhaha!!  Nearly spewed adult beverage on that last line!!!

And now my 19 yr old geek child is saying ‘Beetle Woman.  Scourge of Justice’ in his radio man voice.  Over and over.

    • formerlyAnon

       I love your boy.

  • ItchyInKentucky

    I see codpiece.

  • Sophie Collier

Without the longer fabric skirt, that would be hella fierce!

  • ballerinawithagun

The fabrics, I use that term loosely, are so bizarre this year!

  • PaulaBerman

To respond to your last sentence: didn’t she?

  • fungstyle

oh come now! you’re always shouting for risks on the red carpet and girl is WORKING this. she’s like, “yeah, i’m wearing something that is almost certainly half my own weight and appears to be molded of blue glitter – WHAT OF IT?” and the detailing is perfect! the sleek hair and bold eyeliner were inspired. is it a little drag queen esque? sure. does she look damn good? YES.

  • Kind of a toned down win for her. Tony Stark would totally hit that.

  • gabbilevy

Dress is fun, hair is scary. Why does she always where it like this?

  • eight_of_nine

I don’t like the fabric at the bottom, but rip that off and this would be a slammin’ dress.

  • MilaXX

I agree with everything you wrote, yet I kinda like it. Even the matchy matchy makeup somehow works.

  • nannypoo

Bulletproof. Always a good idea on the red carpet.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

She looks kind of badass, even if the dress is probably killing her.

  • unbornfawn

    She looks like Armadillo Kardashian.

  • ccm800

that is one cheap ass looking fabric making up the bottom third.

  • I LIKE the fact somebody wore something mad on the RC, we need more swans pooping chocolate eggs and less boring to brighten our days!

  • C’mon guys lighten up!  Look what she’s standing in front of, this is not exactly high cinema art. If Tilda Swinton was wearing this you’d be swooning

    •  Lighten up? Was our dung beetle crack too serious for you?

  • wtf is kat graham lol

  • A shiny blue dung beetle. You guys are magnifique.

  • No_Sew

This looks like a dress creation from the “unusual materials” challenge on Project Runway…. and not a dress that would win.

    • alyce1213

I just saw a rerun of the grocery store challenge — Daniel’s blue plastic cup cocktail dress not much different.

  • EEKstl

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA…oh, I’m sorry, was she being serious? I’m sure she figured she’d get ink for it, and she did. Smart beetle.

  • MissAnnieRN

It’s kind of awesome, but I’m not sure it’s awesome in a good way.  Power to you if you can wear a plastic peplum.  But, PEPLUMSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!111111!!!!!!!!oneeeeeeeeee  ugh.

  • Love the commentary, but I gotta say – I’m kinda digging this dress! Super different yet still flattering.

  • funkypeanut

That looks painful, and the bottom seems to have wandered in off of an entirely different outfit. Ball of dung! *snort*

  • UrsNY

I love it! It looks like a roller skating rink from the late 70s. She’s the arch-enemy of the fluffy Xanadu muses. Attack!

  • UrsNY

I love it! It looks like a roller skating rink from the late 70s. She’s the arch-enemy of the fluffy Xanadu muses. Attack!

  • TheOriginalLulu

Well, it’s certainly a look. She looks pretty hot, even though this is all a bit much for a movie premiere I think.
I can’t hate it though. I kind of dig her for having the balls to go there. This may be a weird thing to say, but her widow’s peak kind of completes the look. If this really were a costume and she didn’t already have a widow’s peak, they would have given her one.

  • Caaro3

  • i love this girl.  She never disappoints.

  • She needs to practicing being ‘on’ for the cameras. She looks irritated and bored in every single picture.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

That is without a doubt one of the ugliest dresses I have ever seen on TLo international.  Keep that one in mind for your worst of the year!

  • oohsparkley!

I think I like it too!

  • Thathoodwink

The blue fabric at the bottom doesn’t match the blue of the top. This is just an ugly ugly silly dress. I love her hair and makeup, though.

    • Silly is a good word to describe it.

  • Nonnah

I’m not digging the dress, but I find the makeup appealing.

  • Instead of Scarlett using the drapes she used the blinds!

  • Sara-Ann Collins

Color and make up is great, but she looks a little like a boned fish.

Also, that is a LOT of dress for a movie premier. Even more for a movie she wasn’t even in.

  • KathKo

not feeling this one at all !
she looks like a bad PR’s saturn challenge.

  • Joey Melliza

she looks more like TickGirl – or LadyLice

  • Crooked jaw or is it just me, anyway she’s gorgeous but the bottom part of the dress and the hanger peeking hanger straps ughhh
