In or Out: Scarlett Johansson in Prada

Posted on April 20, 2012

Well, it’s official. We saw it coming and we called it, but now there can be no doubt.

Scarlett Johansson attends the London premiere of “The Avengers” in a Prada dress paired with Christian Louboutin ‘Pigalle’ pumps. Jewelry by Bulgari.

We’re in the midst of a matchy-match micro-trend on the red carpet. And you know what? Call it age or call it weariness, but we’re finally beaten down on the topic. We accept it. Are you happy now? We figure anything would be an improvement over the silly putty shoe trend (which, thankfully, seems to be dying). We reserve the right to bitch when we think someone didn’t get it right, though.

Scar got it right this time. Any color but the two colors in this dress probably would have been way too distracting anyway. Black would have worked, but it’s kind of expected. As for the dress, we would praise it to the heavens if it didn’t have that awful peplum. It takes what could have been a perfect ten of a dress down to something like seven. And we’ve berated her in the past for sporting fussy retro hairstyles that really didn’t do her any favors, but we think the braid is kind of adorable here. We don’t know what’s wrong with us. We’re forgiving all sorts of things here. We’re going to have to rely on you, our beloved minions, to bring the bitchery for us.

Vote Now!

IN! Go with your instincts, T Lo! She looks adorable!

OUT! Heidi of the Swiss Alps hair paired with matchy shoes? What’s WRONG with you two?!?

The Precious Unborn Fawns were in agreement with us that Debra Messing’s shitty shoes ruined her safari outfit, voting it OUT.

Oh that poor milkmaid forget to take her napkin off. (Seriously, what is that thing.)

    Out, for so many reasons.

    • Nariya

Mmm, if only my arms and shoulders could be “beefy” like that.

That peplum is devastatingly bad. Out, entirely because of it. Got to be extra bitchy to compensate for you boys today.

      • blogless

I didn’t mean “beefy” in terms of looking “fat” – I meant that for this dress, I think a more willowy model type would’ve looked better. I think SJ has an amazing body but IMHO this dress is not doing her any favors.

        • Glammie

She’s not tall and she’s broad-shouldered–the dress top is a big horizontal line–so it emphasizes that–then that peplum slices her up again.  So, while I give it a thumbs up–the dress has some issues that make it hard for a short woman to wear.

          • librarygrrl64

Yes, she’s a short woman with short limbs.

          • Also in the top two shots, she is standing a bit weirdly jutting her boobs out for some reason. Might contribute to weird looking posture/limbs.

  • In, even with the peplum.  It looks like a black doggie collar – maybe to keep her from scratching her tummy?

    • AudreysMom

that’s exactly what Audrey thought. One look at ScarJo and bad memories of days in the vet’s office creeped back.

  • Allyson Wells

IN! Love the red shoes… could’ve done without the peplum though.

  • She looks good, especially in the pic with the big smile. 🙂

  • OUT.  The black thing at her waist looks like a dog’s E collar.  It really messes up what could be a stunning dress. And the hair, while I love it, does not belong on the red carpet.  I do see another pair of red shoes I need to add to my collection though.

  • tallgirl1204

I’m feeling TLo posts merging into each other– I look at this and all I can think is “What are the roses saying about the state of her life?” (ala the Joan-in-roses post in a recent Mad Men recap)

I don’t like the black-roses in the skirt, or the peplum.  I, however, love the fact that the fabric has so much texture to it, her happy-girl expression, and frankly, I like shoes that pick up a color in the outfit.  In.

    • Judith Mignault

OMG, I thought the same thing, I was so sure they were going to say: “Well, it’s official. We saw it coming and we called it, but now there can be no doubt… Just by looking at the size of the roses on ScarJo’s dress, it’s official she’s in love!” LOL

  • Spicytomato1

I may be in the minority here but I am partial to “Heidi of the Swiss Alps hair.” Not many can pull it off but ScarJo’s rocking it. Her makeup is flawless, too. I’m not a fan of the midriff dust ruffle but for overall style I say she’s IN.

    • out for a walk

Agree with all you said. I sort of like those Heidi hairstyles anyway but I think she has it paired well – the dress feels modern and not too fussy or too stark, both of which wouldn’t work with the braids.

    • justineyy

agree about the Heidi hair…I think when pulled off like it is here, it looks gorgeous.

      • Monabel

        Another Heidi hair fan here.

  • OUT. The hair is dreadful and the dress is just not working.

  • OUT.

    • OUT!!! Emphatically out!  WTF?

  • nannypoo

You guys are really in a good mood today. The dress is awful and the hair is idiotic.

    • Like totally.  How can this be good when it’s accentuating the shortness of the actress and making her look almost stocky?  As for the hair, is SJ trying to win votes in some former communist bloc country?

      • ballerinawithagun

Out. Agree with the 2 above.

  • granddelusion

WTH? Crack-ass crazy. And I’m referring to the dress, not the matchy shoes.

  • In_Stitches

Oof, big OUT from me.  Two similarly textured, similar patterns sharing two of the exact same colors divided by a solid black peplum that draws the eye straight to her midsection while obscuring it?  No.  Makeup is great and so are the shoes.  I can take or leave the hair, but it’s just not enough to justify that dress.

    • Kayceed

You saved me the effort of typing – I share your sentiments without exception. Out.

  • lovelyivy

She does like these edgy styles that do her no favors.  Hair and makeup look very nice at least.

  • Out.  The peplum ruins an otherwise cute dress and the hair is cray-cray.

  • TieDye64

IN, though I don’t know what’s going on with me, either. I think I’d normally call this an easy out what with the lame-ass peplum and the hair, but for some reason this works on her. Except for the Heidi of the Alps hair, though she’s pulling it off better than some, which needs to go.

  • IN! I never in my wildest dreams would have thought anyone could look sexy with heidi hair, but damned if miss Jo doesn’t manage it. I think the hair even makes the silly peplum work. Her makeup is to die for and she’s just glowing in these pictures.

    • YAELS

agree. I know this is weird to say, but she looks like she smells good. Fresh or something. IN.

  • Lina_bee

IN-ish. I like both prints but I wish they were separated by a simple black belt or sash instead of that horrible peplum. The makeup and shoes are great. The hair is perfect for this particular outfit, although it would be silly most of the rest of the time. But that peplum! What is Prada THINKING??

    • mountainFashionista

Funny, I agree with everything you say here, yet my verdict is OUT-ish.

I will be SO happy when the peplum/hip detailing thing is over, yet I fear it’s only in its infancy.  I don’t think I’ve seen a peplum-ed dress yet on TLo that I’ve thought looked good.

    • TropiCarla

Peplum’s are the devil’s handiwork. Ugh.

  • In! I think she looks the best I’ve seen her lately, even considering that peplum.

  • And I love the hair.

  • As someone put it very well: “OUT! Heidi of the Swiss Alps hair paired with matchy shoes? What’s WRONG with you two?!?”

  • jtabz

IN by an inch. She looks so confident that I can forgive the Swiss Missery on her head and the weird frippery at her waist.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

IN. The peplum stinks but the rest is fine. Even the Red Shoes. She can go on dancing.

    • malarkey

Agreed. IN, get rid of the peplum around the middle and we’d have perfect. Red shoes are fine, esp with this dress. Hair: I think it’s OK. At least it’s styled somewhat. Looks better than her comic-con hair for sure.

  • sagecreek

Hate the peplum, but she makes that dress work. IN.

  • Bozhi

In.  I love the red in the dress and the shoes.  Hair and jewelry look great.

  • Pants_are_a_must

The Heidi hair and the peplum are what makes this look an OUT for me. Imagine the dress without it and her hair down. Would’ve been a straight KNOCKOUT. You disappoint me, ScarJo.

  • Imasewsure

She looks really pretty and I like the idea of the dress but the dog collar as many of the minions have called it, makes no sense at all… why not a belt to break it up and then you could off-load the dog collar to some other celeb’s pooch? Dunno kinda pretty kinda dumb…

  • guest2visits

The whole thing seems to work in a quirky kind of young-starlett way.
It’s slightly unusual; and it looks like Scarlett gravitates to that.  She looks good.

  • In.  it cant be denied – she is working it.

  • UrsNY

Love her! The Widow in IN!

  • MilaXX

OUT! The peplum ruins the dress completely. Hate the hair and the red lip is too much when you have the red in the dress AND you’re matching the red in the shoe. ScarJo can do better.

  • I can’t believe I’m going with IN. Nice to see her change it up a bit.

  • It’s just so…fussy. And with that Heidi hair I have to give it an OUT.

  • In. Not fond of the peplum, but that’s ok. Her face is gorgeous – love the makeup. The colors work on her, and I like the red shoes (I’m wearing a pair of red retro-shoes myself today).

  •  Oh man, that peplum really ruins it! Still, she looks gorgeous. IN.

  • Kirsten Henry

in! i love everything about this!

  • TheLaurenJean

Oh, God no. That hair is horrendous, and the peplum is hideous. Inexcusable.

  • In with a reservation…I kinda love the shoes, but the peplum is just aweful.  Fortunately for Scar, she pulls everything else together so well that i have to give it an IN.

  • She has clearly, finally, rebounded from post-Ryan-Reynolds-split wardrobe. Even though that peplum reminds me of a waitress’s apron, I love all the interest and subtle dialogue within the dress – it whispers “look at me” in your ear, rather than scream it. Hair, makeup, bod – fantastic. And matchy pumps in a *pointy toe* I can get behind. IN!

  • DinahR

IN   I love those pumps. And I love that pumps seem to be returning vs. platforms I can’t wear.  She’s cute in this dress.  Her hair is adorable.  Makeup is beautiful.  She’s glowing, in fact… in that last photo you can literally see a nimbus of awesome coming from her braided hair.  The gods have spoken.

  • guestela

In. I like everything except the peplum. Even the matchy shoes.

    • carolynmo

Me, too! What is it with peplums, anyway? Why draw attention to the hips, for crying out loud? Love those shoes!

  • Sunshine16

I like matchy shoes.  I don’t like ScarJo or milkmaid hairdos.  I hate the peplum so much I want to run in there & rip it off.  Regardless, she’s cuter than usual and IN

  • NurseEllen

In the first couple of photos, I thought the peplum was bad, and I thought it was BLACK, too.  At the last photo, where it was revealed in all its awful green-ness, this sank into “ye gods” territory.  I do like the shoes.  The Von Trapp Family hairdo is cute on her, personally, but I’m not sure it’s the right look for this dress.  But then again, it’s hard to do a peplum hairdo.  OUT.

  • Terence Ng

I love Frida Kahlo, but not as a red carpet look. OUT.

  • Rand Ortega

Hate the Broomhilda hair, but the dress is really pretty.

  • I love it, I think she looks beautiful. IN from me.

  • giiiirrrr

Out.  The silhouette of the dress is cute, but it’s fighting with itself.  Too many iterations of the print and the colors and the peplum looks like some 80s stretch elastic belt.  I can live with the braid because it’s so pretty from the side and it’s different than either the limp, Breck girl, top-knot, or slicked-back hair that everyone is doing.

  • I can’t decide in or out. That peplum is god-awful, but look how gorgeous she looks in that shot from chest up.

  • TSkot

Greater than the sum of the parts.  IN

  • TheOriginalLulu

I’m with you on the matchy. Normally I hate it, but if the look is really working, then I can’t complain. Especially if the shoes are fabulous, and in this case they are.
I love peplums in general, but this one doesn’t look as if it belongs and I think the dress would be much better off without it.
Love the hair and makeup. Guys, this is a WERQ for me.

  • Out. Don’t like the dress (rose boobs!), don’t like the Sienna Miller braid. Love the shoes in general, and her earrings are nice too.

  • No, the dress is kind of Frankendress, even without peplum. Cute shoes and I like the hair, still an OUT

  • IN – I agree it would be perfect without the peplum, but I can live with it because the rest of it is great. Love the print and the colors.

  • Lilithcat

She’s angling for the lead in a Betty Grable biopic, isn’t she?

  • I’d say “in” because the dress looks cute and she’s wearing it well, and I don’t mind the matchy shoes. I would hate it if the shoes were canary yellow or some other ridiculous color. Don’t like the hair particularly, though.

  • Sara__B

Swiss Miss hair, peplum, with matchy shoes and lips. IN any. Weird.

  • Ennovi_R

  • That peplum! That hair! That weird hemline! THAT LIPSTICK!

This, gentlemen, is a motherfucking OUT.

  • butterflysunita

IN.  I don’t like the peplum either, but she looks beautiful.  Or perhaps I was swayed by the last photo, where she has a blue alien glow around her head that actually matches her outfit.

  • Peplum, hair = OUT. Can’t do it. Love the shoes, though.

  • j_anson

I like this. IN! (Although the peplum IS bad.) But then, I like matching too. I think the key is that when you do matching in bold colors, it’s striking and fun. When you do matching in pastels or soft colors, you end up looking like a political trophy wife. WHAT you’re matching makes a huge difference.

  • I walked into this post expecting you to hate it, and I was prepared to defend how much i liked it. pleased to say no defense necessary.

  • Ugh, that peplum. Does that particular embellishment EVER really help a look?

Aside from that, she really looks spectacular. I think the big difference with the braid is that she actually looks really happy here  – not her usual “sick of everything” expression. IN.

  • There’s a tiny dark part of my soul that will always love matching shoes & lipstick, but there’s too much going on with this look to really call it in.  I’m sorry, Scarlett – you had me until the peplum!

  • Isy

Who invented peplum anyway? It rarely looks good. Out.

  • also, J’DORE that hair, did it myself before i chopped all my hair off. its adorable and especially suits her.

  • Her face and hair are flawless. I love the shoes and am coveting them like anything. In those circumstances, I can forgive that sad little peplum on what’s otherwise quite a nice dress. IN.

  • SewingSiren

Love the braided crown. I love braids. There I said it and I’m not sorry.

  • That hairdo combined with the outfit makes her look like the Swedish Christmas maid heading out for Rumspringa.

  • sleepycat

    I like it, IN

  • altalinda

The peplum make this an out.

  • Liz

    I’ve never met a braid I didn’t like.  It’s a gift and a curse.

  • formerlyAnon

Like: Shoes, hair, shape of dress underneath peplum.

Dislike: Lace AND wallpaper flowers?  A bit much.

Hate: Stupid peplum.  Or, to copy your technical term: “awful peplum.”

Verdict: Almost out, oughta be out, but I’ll call it “in” because I think that hairstyle should be encouraged. I am very fond of it on women with any claim to good bone structure, in particular cheekbones.

  • Pannyx

I can’t get past the hideous peplum. That’s all I can focus on. Out.

  • IAmJ

A wholehearted IN. I hate the crap out of the peplum, but otherwise the dress is great, the hair is lovely, and holy hell, this girl really does have a beautiful face.

  • AthenaJ

That hair is making me want to climb a mountain and shout “YODELEHEHOOO!!!”
Seriously though, it is pretty cute on her. And I don’t hate the peplum, I think it actually helps to provide a nice break between the different colors/prints in the top and bottom (although the job could have been done just as well if the fabric was tight to her body instead of the flare). I also lurve the red shoes, they are like sexified ruby slippers!
I’m sorry TLo, but it’s Friday afternoon, I’m hopped up and happy on caffiene and sugar from Starbucks, and apparently my bitchy reserves have run out! I’ll even say that although I critisize SarJo for her rather vapid and vacant open mouthed expressions, the one pic where she’s grinning is absolutely gorgeous.

  • Jessica O’Connell

Maybe it’s just because it’s Friday and I’m too tired from a week of bitchiness to be a bitch online too, but I think she gets an IN on this one, though that peplum-thing is AWFUL and it looks as if she’s trying to hide tummy bulge that we all know the bitch doesn’t have.

Huh, guess I still had enough energy to be a little bitchy, but all in all an IN from me!

  • LesYeuxHiboux

Everything looks lovely but the wretched peplum (which will now be the name of my Steampunk band. The Wretched Peplums). IN, I guess. I still don’t have to like her, though.

  • Mexxoo

OUT!  That girl has an amazing bod.  Not only is the peplum WAY too high, it’s also way too tight.  From the side, it gives her an under-boob paunch which is nearly as big as her boobs themselves.  The girls needed a better support garment.  Such a disservice!

  • Judy_J

The peplum looks like an afterthought on this dress.  The dress itself fits well….I wish I could say the same about those shoes.  They appear to be a half size too big for her.  I’m afraid I’m going to be bitchy this afternoon and give her an OUT.

  • Sorry, she’s out. She looks like Marie Antionette off to milk her cows.

  • KaileeM

Eek! I think the braid is adorable too!

  • HomeOfficeGirl

IN IN IN!  I love this.  She looks fresh and beautiful.  Love the colors.   Everything is fitting and flattering, as you would expect for ScarJo.  Good job!!!

  • JanieS

OUT: I think that dress looks ridiculous – the extra black floof in the middle is so silly. I kind of like the braided Heidi hair, though.

  • rainwood1

Dress is okay – I noticed the Joan red roses connection right away – but it makes her look short-waisted.  The Heidi hair is out.  As in ‘time to milk the cows’ out.  So I say she’s OUT.

  • Judy_S

IN, echoing your reservations about the peplum. I wore my hair like that in 5th grade but it never looked that good.

  • IN! OMG, she’s a hot little number. But yes, snip off the peplum and take that hair down.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

IN.  She’s gorgeous and she looks great.

  • Patricia Gillett

Out. Hate the hair, hate the dress. The shoes are awesome though.

  • VicksieDo

It’s just so nice to see her smile again 🙂

  • Cathy S

I’ll give her an In. The peplum only really bothers me in the first photo. After that, it looks okay. Thanks for telling me it’s called a peplum instead of “whatever the hell that is around her waist.”

  • fringebenefit

Oh so IN! Agree completely, TLo. Matchy is better than putty any day of the year. Except when they don’t match, like Emily Blunt’s not-quite-the-right-green shoes the other day. Scarlett gets everything right here.

  • In. She simply looks hot.

  • kirble

Ew. OUT. It’s looks like something Kenley would make if she had better taste in fabrics.

  • If she hadn’t had such bad taste in clothing before, I’d fear this woman was going blind.

  • You two need a good spanking! That peplum is enough to take the inniest of ins and make it OUT. And the hair? No. Just no. Unless there are cows to be milked at the end of that red carpet, she needs to take those ridiculous braids down. Plus, her earrings were inadequate. There, I’ve bitched on your behalf. You’re welcome.

  • IN.  She looks Hawt.

  • I don’t know why my first thought was “she looks like she smells nice.”
I like it! I don’t know why either!

  • in

  • librarygrrl64

Without the peplum: IN. With the peplum: OUT.

  • MzzPants

    IN for me.

  • Owwwwwwt.  Owt.

  • **HATE** the peplum. OUT.

  • She looks…better than usual lately. It’s not the best dress for her, but she looks beautiful. I say IN.

  • In, though I agree the dress would be a thousand times better without the weird middle part.

  • petalfrog

Love the entire thing, including the peplum. It makes her stand regular and not like she needs to pee, so that’s good.

  • Call me Bee

Love this.  Love the dress, shoes (just like mine!) and Scarlett’s hair.  The whole look has an Hungarian folksy look to it. IN!

  • Louise Bryan

It looks like a leather apron. Out!

  • karena10

I think the matchy shoes are the least wrong thing with this look.  I think that shoes that match an accent color in a dress can pull a look together – its when a dress is all or mostly one color and the shoes match that it looks bridesmaidy.

The dress looks like three dresses patched together.  Peplums rarely flatter and this is no exception.  And the hair is just odd for a red carpet look.

  • KSuKim

Darling dress minus the peplum, which looks like those cone collars you see on some dogs to prevent them from biting themselves or something.

  • Josh Seelig

    Yulia Tymoshenko hair!!

  • In. I kind of like this, though I’m not sure why.

  • I really like her hair. It’s just done right, not too big, in the right place and flattering for her face. That peplum really looks stuck on like some kind of weird apron.

  • joe_tey83

    It’s Frankendress Lite.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

gorgeous gorgeous dress–if, of course, it didnt have the peplum. then again, i imagine MP would tell us we didnt get it. then again, again, i dont think thats true. i get it, we probably all get it. i just dont want it.

me, personally, cos i wear lots & lots of really super heeled shoes? the platforms were better. not just cos i like platforms but cos they dont hurt anywhere near as much to wear as do spikes & stilettos. spikes & stilettos can look just as nice, though, & even, very occasionally, nicer. not my thing, these, but pretty.

overall she looks much better than she has when she hasnt. i like her lipstick too. definitely on the positive side for me. if she gets to keep the dress maybe she can find an old tailor w/ a whole lotta talent to remove that stupid extra pepskirt & she can wear this dress again. & again & again & again & again!

or at least i would. it’s that fine.

  • another_laura

Im torn.  I think red shoes were the only option here, so many points for that, because those shoes are lovely!  However, peplums are the work of the devil and that is a particularly awful peplum.  Also against her?  I do not like the hair.

    Out.  But not by much.

  • annieanne

Hate the hair, the clashing red lip and the peplum.

  • Anathema_Device

That’s  a pretty cute dress, but the solid satin peplum kind of comes out of nowhere.

I’ll vote in, just because more is working than isn’t here.

  • TheOtherChristina

This would be so much better without the peplum, but it’s pretty freaking cute as is. IN!

  • jw_ny

Like all but the peplum.  I can’t believe I’m in agreement about the shoes actually working here.  Not loving the shade of lipstick, kind of tomatoey, but at least it’s not bright red.  It has a warm tone to it.

  • crash1212

IN. Everything gets an in from me – except the peplum, and I like a peplum sometimes – when they’re deployed properly. This one isn’t…looks more like an apron.

  • Miss_Led

Out. Funeral apron on an otherwise harmless dress.

  • Amy Ellinger

Alas, ye peplum, you maketh this an OUT.  So close, though. She looks like she’s enjoying the event and is comfortable in the dress, so major props for that.

Love the hair, shoes and her makeup is lovely.

  • greyhoundgirl

I think I would like it better without the shiny peplum.  Let the two (boring) patterns be right next to each other.  I think out.

  • justineyy

IN! I do agree about the peplum–it hides her waist and makes her fab curves look chunky–but her hair is adorable, and I love the red lipstick and eyeliner. I like the matchy in this case because I think the purple breaks it up enough. Also, she looks happy which I don’t think she does often enough 🙂

  • janetjb

The peplum is only a minor distraction.

  • Wrenaria

Her hair and peplum make this an out for me – which is too bad, because everything else is lovely.

  • cleep1000

Hideous. (Except for the shoes.) OUT.

  • It’s just too much. Peplums are never good, and neither is that hair.

The matchy shoes, I don’t mind.

  • kimmeister

OUT, despite the fact that I love the hair and think the shoes are fine.  The dress is just ugly and not doing her figure any favors.

  • OUT.  To me that dress looks like it’s inside out – the patterns seem like the not-meant-to-be-seen flip-side of something embroidered, and the off-color peplum/waist-collar/mini-apron is just fugly. In fact, the only part of the outfit that I like at all is the shoes, and only because they’re a badass red with vorpal heels; maybe a nice black catsuit would have served the shoes better!

  • ri_dic

The only thing I don’t like is the gawdawful peplum. It wasn’t a good idea in the 80s, and it still isn’t a good idea.

  • bellafigura1

OUT. I still say she’s working too hard for someone so beautiful.  Everything is overwrought with her all the time. It’s like a long time ago someone said to her, You’re like a pin-up girl from the 50s! and she can’t leave that shit alone already.  It’s too much, the boobs the butt the kisser the roses the peplum the braid and on and on.  Too much!

  • OUT! Just for the hair alone. Ugh.

  • golspie

That dress would have worked without the bib.

  • saanrio

Not minding the matchy shoes so much, since this dress is hard to pair with anything that doesn’t match it, but at the same time, that dress… ugh.  The peplum was the worst idea ever.

  • Stefanos Mantyla

This is not the worst deployment of this kind of hair (it might be the best deployment of it I have seen in a long time, in fact), so I can see why you are forgiving that. The peplum was extraneous, but not enough to take it into OUT territory.

Yeah, I am with you on this one.

  • Susan Crawford

IN, Miz Scarlett. You look wonderful in this Prada, despite my usual reservations about peplums. You, Miz Scarlett, may be the only star who could werq the peplum without looking like a lampshade.

And I love me a pair of red stilettoes with pointy toes.

Can’t get with the braid 100%, but oddly, it also werqs in an – and here is a word I never thought I would type – adorkable way.

  • ThaliaMenninger

The peplum is the only wrong note for me. On balance, she’s IN like Flynn.

  • Seanybills

Anyone else think of Yulia Tymoshenko when they saw her hair? Appropriate considering Johansson’s character (Black Widow/Natalia Romanova) and Tymshenko are from the former USSR, but maybe I’m weird.

  • I really want to like this. ScarJo? Prada? Should be a winning combo. I even kinda dig the hair. But that peplum… I dunno man. I’ll give her an IN with reservations.

  • Jangle57

While I’ll give her credit for wearing a dress with a built-in napkin – how convenient is that and black too, how practical! – my first reaction was yuck! and I think you should always go with your first reaction so OUT for me.

  • MissMariRose

Out. That dress is positively schizophrenic.

  • CharCrop

IN with an asterisk**************UGH to the stupid and unnecessary peplum!

  • out. that dress is fug.

  • quiltrx

OUT.  I don’t like the hair on Diane Kruger, so I’m sure not going to like it on this one (about whom I waver between disdain and meh.)

And this dress….geez, twice in one day (Elizabeth Banks was #1) I have to say “I like the top, I like the bottom, but not the two together.”  And WTF on the HOSTESS APRON in the middle.  Bleh.  (and I’m one who actually enjoys a well-done peplum!)

  • IN. I think the hair is cute.

  • fiestyfashionfem

Out – but not for the shoes  – for the peplum. Hate hate peplums.  Evil from hell, they are.

  • sleah_in_norcal

INi say.  the black/red/royal blue combo is sharp and chic.  her beautiful porcelain shoulders are displayed voluptuously, and i go for the valkyrie hair.  i’m so glad she went back to a natural looking blond.  that dark hair really aged her.  too bad about the cocktail apron, but everything else is perfect.

  • ChelseaNH

    She’s wearing a lampshade.  OUT.

  • loverungay

Why are the shoes always too big?  Do starlets have mini feet?  You always see that the shoes do not fit properly.  Don’t love the dress or shoes here.

  • The dress isn’t my favorite, but she’s wearing it well. IN.

  • PeaceBang

Hate the peplum, too. I could declare this a big winner if she would scrape off a half pound of make-up, loosen up the hair a little and not have matched the lipstick to the bodice to the shoes. I mean, that’s a BIT MUCH.

  • unbornfawn

OUT! Who even noticed the shoes, with the Heidi hair and that butt ugly dress.

  • ccm800

    that dress is hideous.

  • Sophie Collier

You are being waaaay too forgiving, TLo.  This looks stupid.  The hair looks silly and that peplum ruins the entire dress.  But hey, the shoes are sexy!  OUT

  • crackineggs

I want Cathy Cambridge and Jennifer Anniston to wear this dress on the same day, so that the Internet crashes amidst the pregnancy brouhaha.  Apart from the hideous visitation that is that peplum, she’s an IN.

  • demidaemon

OUT. This dress is hideous, especially with the flower tumors on the skirt.

  • don’t worry, TLO, i just had a nap; my bitchery is well rested. OUT. the hair looks like she’s pinned it for a wig, and that stupid peplum cut’s her in half and makes it all terribly unflattering.

  • Samantha Irene

love everything but the horrific peplum kills the look – why couldn’t it be a sash or  narrow belt?  OUT

  • momato

IN.  The dress is a little weird, but it all works together well.  Love the hair, and the shoes are perfect for the dress, methinks.

  • MoreShoes

OUT on account of the hair (very Heidi) and the peplum. I don’t mind the matching shoes.

  • Turner Edwards

    IN! She looks great!

  • rumcg66

IN, although I agree with the peplum haters and I really don’t like the Heidi braid. Still, the rest of the dress and the shoes are fab and her makeup is AMAZING.

  • HATE this look. Fancy Milkmaid is what she should stay far away from because she’s too close to it as it is, with her mouth always half open and all.

  • Except for the awful ruffle, I like everything, especially the braid. IN

  • DCSheehan

Out. This woman is stunning but she cannot dress herself.

  • AWStevens

The peplum is a speed bump for the eyes.  Otherwise, she looks so comfortable and relaxed.  IN

  • BayTampaBay

TLO stated: We’re in the midst of a matchy-match micro-trend on the red carpet.

The May Bazaar is promoting matchy-match for anywhere anytime.

  • TLO!  You’re getting soft on us!  I actually don’t like the dress even without the peplum, but I am old-fashioned and cranky about mixed prints.  The hair is pretty, but I will never be able to see a braided ‘do like that as formal enough for anything but a RenFaire.  Sorry, bitches, she’s O to the UT.

  • I’m going to say out, but I blame it all on the peplum. Someone should have snuck up behind her with some sheers.

  • MissAnnieRN

IN.  I am totally going to try the crown braid for the next wedding I go to.  But PEPLUMSZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!11  Ugh, enough already.

  • bluefish

In!  She looks great.  Love the dress.

  • guest2visits

    Just saw her ‘live ‘ on TV in this dress; she looks amazing.  The dress looks much better than the still shots;
the peplum isn’t as huge.  It doesn’t mean the dress wouldn’t be better without it.

  • mslewis

I will never understand the peplum but, okay, Scar looks good in this.  I say IN.

  • No. I just think that dress has too many elements and makes her look both flat-chested and thick-waisted. I like the shoes and the hair though.

  • This would be a fine dress without that peplum. But those lace flowers plus milkbraids…this look is kinda folkloric, TLo. She looks like she’s trying some sort of modern take on a european traditional dress.

  • marilyn

Out.  The top does not go with the bottom.  Scarlett is a gorgeous woman.  Her hair works with her face, but with an informal outfit, not an uptown one.  The red shoes are not an issue.  But the skirt photographs blue and black.  So, red and black on the top with blue and black on the bottom.  Come one- this is a photo opp.  That is exactly the kind of thing her stylist needed to work out.  The skirt was not only blue, but it was VERY busy with the peplum and the black lace, as well.  For an outfit like this, there should be ONE busy thing. If there were no blue, and no peplum, the whole thing would be fine.   Bad marks for the stylist.

  • The peplum chops her in half in exactly the worst place.  The entire look makes her appear stumpy and juvenile – definitely an OUT.

  • gina1953

    Out.  The peplum is vile.

  • Cousin_Rose

The skirt is what bothers me the most. I’d agree with 10 if it were made from the peplum fabric with no peplum. I like the shoes and the hair would be a minus if she weren’t selling it with her smile.

    Guess that’s an IN

  • GTrain

She has a great body, but I hate everything except the shoes so I have to say OUT.

  • Don’t like the dress but can she look bad?

  • I am not exactly a ScarJo fan, but I love this SO hard. And she looks SO happy and fit. I might have to rethink my dislike. IN!

  • nancylee61

She looks ridiculous!! Hate the peplum, hate the Oktoberfest hair, hate the shoes. I really have never liked a Prada or McCartney dress. Why they are successful designers is beyond my understanding.

  • Cousin_Rose

Please post her Vogue cover! She looks A. Maze. Ing.

  • LambeeBaby

    Peplum/Dark Room curtain= bad
    Heidi head=good
But, since she looks so happy I will give her an IN for her head and enthusiasm.

  • I love every detail. Yes, even the peplum. She looks fabulous.

  • bitterk

OUT.  Something is not right with Miss Scarlett.  And i don’t mean the hiddy clothes and hair.

  • Akh621

Since I’m certain Scarlet is reading each one of these comments, I don’t have it in me to ruin her day when she looks so genuinely happy, so IN

  • boweryboy

OUT.  It’s that horrible, horrible peplum that ruins it for me.

    I hate peplums.

  • K

I wear my hair in milkmaid braids all the time, and oddly, guys are really into it. Also redhead in jean jacket looks so terribly worried.

  • It is the working man who is the happy man. It is the idle man who is the miserable man.

  • The look on the woman’s face behind Johansson in the picture where she’s holding the marker, describes perfectly how I feel about this look. OUT.

  • The braid would have been cute if it was smooth, but all the flyaways popping out make it look as though it’s been slept in. I’ve got hip length hair myself and it usually has to be confined in a braid so I know what a slept-in braid looks like.  The shoes are gorgeous and I don’t at all mind that the lip color matches them, it’s the dress I cannot stand. WAY over-designed to the point where it looks like she was trying on 2 alternative skirts at the same time and walked out the door with “option 2” still layered over “option 1”.  I could just about accept the black lace roses (which are reading to my eye like black pom-poms in the photo) if it weren’t for that limp “peplum” thing that is cutting her into too many horizontal bands.  Fraid it’s an out for me as well.

  • Rachel Sawyer

That peplum is a crime against humanity.

  • splix71

    That peplum just sucks. 🙁

  • Sweetbetty

Out for the peplum, in for the shoes.  Call me matchy-match but to my generation that looks just right.

  • Catiline

TOTAL OUT, that peplum is of the devil!

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

IN even with the Heidi meets Swiss Miss hair.  IN.

  • annamiklo

Out.  The hair is awful, and the peplum ruins the dress for me.  The matching shoes don’t bother me at all, though.

  • howdoilook

    In for me!

  • Judith Mignault

In. That peplum is making me sad but I think the rest of the dress is so amazing it still passes the test. But no with a mark as good as it could have gotten without it.  I accept the red matchy shoes but I think this outfit would be perfectly chic without the peblum and with dark blue shoes.

  • L.

    IN except for the peplum.

  • OUT to uptown Bavarian beer hall waitress.

  • tsid2012

I give her a total IN.  I’m not crazy about the peplum but don”t hate it that bad.  I love her with her hair up so this is good for me.  her makeup is fab.  I think she is one of the sexiest actresses out there right now but when she doesn’t work with her glamour va va voom body, she falls flat.  Here, it works.

  • She’d have looked a lot better without the napkin/peplum on the skirt, but otherwise I really like this look.  In

  • BazoDee

    The peplum is horrid. OUT

  • OUT! And I think my beer is stale, Heidi!

  • calimon

She looks well put together. Refreshing to see this much effort (regarding both her and others) for a change. She’s definitely looking ‘In’ to me here.

  • calimon

She looks well put together. Refreshing to see this much effort (regarding both her and others) for a change. She’s definitely looking ‘In’ to me here.

  • EEKstl

IN – I do love the shoes with this.  Smart that she opted to match the bodice color, not the skirt.  I actually like the dress, too, except for that crazy black peplum.  Taking a dog collar given to pooches post-surgery so as not to bite their stitches, dyeing it black and wrapping it around your waist isn’t necessarily a stellar design idea. The rest of it is so cute I’m choosing to overlook it.

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

IN!  She looks better than she has in ages!

  • oohsparkley!

The peplum looks like it belongs on a different dress.  Still an in for me.

  • kingderella

    are we still voting? IN!

  • It’s too bad the red carpet and the red shoes make her feet disappear.  I’m not into the whole package.  OUT

  • claudemtl777

The peplum or the hair…One of the two elements has to go to be IN…As it is…OUT

  • belfebe

I would have given her a big hooray if it wasn’t for that awful peplum.  Still, it’s a huge improvement over what she’s been wearing for the past year or two.  Therefore, I’ll give her a very narrow IN.

  • lilazander

Out!there has been overflow of her all over the place, or I just have spring blues. Love the dress, hate the overall look, if it makes sense.
