In or Out: Penelope Cruz in Dolce&Gabbana

Posted on April 16, 2012

We really wanted to love this.

Penelope Cruz attends the world premiere of  “To Rome With Love”  in Rome in a Dolce&Gabbana gown.

It’s a good-on-paper dress, but it’s not working for us. We’re as over black lace as we can possibly be, but the solution is definitely not dusty pink lace. For God’s sake, fashion world, didn’t you learn anything from the ’80s?  And is it us or is the boob-fit a little funny here? We’ll be the first to admit we haven’t paid a whole lot of attention to her boobs over the years, but aren’t they … well… bigger than this? Her figure almost disappears in this dress. And the color isn’t very flattering against her skin tone. Not loving the tight bun on top either.

Are we bitches?

Vote Now!

IN! Yes, you’re bitches. She looks fine.

OUT! No, you’re not bitches. She looks like a tablecloth you’d buy in a dollar store.

Lake Bell’s droopy Marchesa rallied the Bitter Kittens, who gave it a near-unanimous OUT.

    • Jessi03

I think she looks quite pretty.  The bust is a bit weird, but she doesn’t need the girls hanging out ALL the time.  IN!

    • Aly Light

I think she looks classically lovely– very clear nods to Audrey Hepburn here, and I think it works. Though as someone has paid a lot more attention to her breasts, yeah, they typically are bigger than that.

    • Isana Leshchinskaya

      a little tight, but IN

    • joancarol

Does she have a hairy armpit??

      • IAmJ

      • Mexxoo

Yes, but it’s razor stubble, not full-out bohemian fluff.

        • mshesterp

I don’t know–it seems like with celebs any kind of unnecessary body hair is the first thing to go, so I would guess it’s a weird shadow.

Why have I given this more than a second of thought??

    • Sobaika Mirza

I don’t think white was the best lining for this dress, but not going to lie – I love this. It would take a mountain of fug to make Penelope Cruz not look great.

    • j_anson

I agree that the fit is odd in places, but other than that, I actually like the color on her and the bun. IN!

    • AlexJez

You are not bitches. She can have a better dress. This is a dress only for size 0/2 black or dark skin model/actress.

      • foodycatAlicia

Yes – she could have a better dress. The colour is just a bit too close to her skin tone.

    • Laura

    • John Watson

a tight bun on the top of the head never looks good unless you are audrey hepburn.

    • amanda lynn

      meh; out.

    • TheFashionistaTimes

I kinda like it. Yes, the bust is weird, but I like the rest. Definitely IN from me!

      • Anplica Fiore

Agreed – she’s looking pretty and almost soft here.  In

    • Elena

Out. The hair sucks. The dress sucks on her. End of story.
Actually, the dress would probably suck on anyone.

    • NDC_IPCentral

      No – I’m wit’choo, boys. OUT.

Color is wrong, the bust fit is unattractive, and I am no fan of puddling fabric around the feet.  This dress has potential; on a woman with a different skin tone, better fitted, and without that draperies on the floor hem, it could be a lovely evening/red carpet outfit.

    • Laura Nugent

No, you’re not bitches, this is terrible.  She’s lovely of course, but the dress is not helping. OUT!

    • NurseEllen

How funny that her updo resembles the “Medusa” logo on the backdrop!  I bet her hair wasn’t supposed to remind us of braided snakes.  Too much eye makeup, too.  The earrings are wonderful.  The dress is underwhelming.  Hard to believe someone could make Penelope Cruz look so blah. OUT.

    • Aniela Marie Perry

I think she looks soft and elegant. IN

    • Heather

IN: Pretty. Also, re her boobs, she had a baby awhile back so was probably nursing, but perhaps she’s weaned him/her.

      • drdirection

that’s what I was thinking.  nursing breasts can be pretty darn big.

    • Jen Hughes

You are correct. …and you’re bitches. That’s why we love you.

    • butterflysunita

IN.  She looks beautiful.  I wouldn’t like pink lace on everyone but it works for her.

    • MilaXX

Small IN. It’s mostly a “meh” look. Nothing is wrong with it, but nothing is really stellar about it either.

    • Gus Casals

She looks pretty. From afar, it doesn’t even look like lace but an overworked fabric. And she looks princess-y enough to pull it off. She’s an IN.

    • kathryn_dc

    • lesmaha

I’m going to say out.  I’m relieved that the dress isn’t falling off her (as with others wearing sleeveless dresses)–but I must admit, I have a pretty high standard for Ms. Cruz.  The color isn’t working for her; the fit is not flattering; and the dress is just kind of blah. So, because it’s Monday, and I’m grumpy and picky–OUT.

    • Anna Daugherty

Is this color Ashes of Roses?

      • CMS

You just gave me a Thorn Birds flashback!

    • Delysia LaFosse

She does look fine, but she’s Penelope Cruz in Dolce & Gabbana, so ‘fine’ isn’t necessarily good enough. The color really isn’t great for her and something about the fit seems off, but the part I dislike most is that hair, which is giving her a little bit of a pin-head.

    • Hannah Shmulsky

They made a poorly-fitting long-line bra and a matching skirt out of Granny’s curtains! But they had trouble fitting the skirt properly, so they gave up and made one of the curtains into a sarong. Fail. Penelope’s too good for a dress made of old curtains! *sniffle*

    • EEKstl

OUT.  It would have worked in a better color and I HATE that visible construction under the bustular area.  Luv. Huh. but no dice.

    • Patricia Gillett

Out, so sick of people picking dresses that are half a shade away from their skin tone. Stylists, stop doing this!

    • HomeOfficeGirl

In.  Very soft and romantic – fitting the occasion/movie I would assume …with a name like “To Rome With Love”

    • PastryGoddess

YES you are Bitches…but you are right.  There is something…off about this dress and look.  OUT to the dress.  IN to that FACE!

    • Pennymac

“Dusty pink” is a kind description of this color. I was thinking more “Ace Bandages”. Love her, hate the dress. And that hair looks bobby-pins-in-the-scalp painful.
OUT!   And I LOVE that you’re bitches!

    • Me Again

Has she looked better?  Obviously.  But it would be too nit-picky to call her out for this.  I give her an IN.  The makeup is great, the hair is just ok, but isn’t gross, and the dress has some interest even if it isn’t the right color for her skin tone.

    • otterlicious

it’s a beautiful dress, sure the fit’s a bit off in the bust, but the white/pink lining is horrific – it should be nude or something. Some accessories and attention to hair would be nice. Overall – out.

    • Synnamin

OUT. Definitely plastic-printed Dollar-Store tablecloth, with a couple of small bowls pasted over her tits

    • alyce1213

Ambivalent again.  She looks beautiful.  The color may have worked for her, but the problem is the cut of the dress (not the style) and the fit — it’s like she’s wearing a too-small-cup-size bra.  The rouching, usually slimming on heavier bodies, makes her look thick.
The dress simply doesn’t flatter her figure, so I guess OUT, but reluctantly.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

OUT – Not only is armpit hair showing (I don’t care whether she shaves or not, but for god’s sake cover it up), but the dress makes her look as though she has underarm fat bulges which I’m pretty sure she doesn’t, but with a dress that tight on top, the excess boobage has to go somewhere!

    • nannypoo

This fabric looks like it would melt near flames. Hate the hair.

    • Stella Zawistowski

Oooh, no. That color belongs on Iman, and Miss Penelope needs to get this dress in a jewel tone. And loosen up the hair. OUT.

    • tired_mommy

      OUT. Just not her dress.

    • twocee

In a different color (not black, not nude) this would be gorgeous.

      As it is, OUT.

    • IAmJ

I don’t know, it’s not her best look to date (and I can’t overlook the bust issues despite my girl crush on her) but I still think it’s quite lovely. IN.

    • padma s

OUT. The fit feels all kinds of wrong. Penelope Cruz is not a box. And that hair is a crime. She doesn’t looks wrong per say because it would take a LOT to make her look fug but neither does she look fantastic. The dress is pretty but I feel like it’s not her dress.

    • msdamselfly

She looks gorgeous!  Hair and makeup are beautiful!

    • Ali

She looks gorgeous! I’d hate this dress on paper, but on her it’s stunning. IN.

    • poggi

If a look makes Penelope Cruz look just okay, then it is out!

    • Austen Jane

She has a much more beautiful body than this dress would lead you to believe.

    • ampg

I’m in the “That’s Not Your Dress” camp, which is too bad. I do like the above-the-neck styling.  It’s an OUT, but with a sad face attached, like so: :-(

    • RedRaven617

You’re not wrong… she looks awful. OUT

    • Larkin21

      She looks great. IN!

    • Austen Jane

Also, I think the bun works for her.

    • muzan-e

There’s something horribly wrong with the bodice.  I’m not going to comment on the size of her bust; I have no idea about it! *g*  But as a small-breasted girl with wide ribs and a little waist – there are ways to make this shape look fabulous, and none of them are happening here. Shame on whoever adjusted that thing to make her look shrunken and boxy all at once.

    • G

So OUT.  From head to overly-long hem line.

    • AlexisPayne

I see why you’re not loving this, but she looks gorgeous and striking, IN.

    • hmariec19

I find this wildly unflattering.  OUT.

    • Jonika Tannous

I think she looks a lot less bomb than she should, but not bad enough to be out. A shaky in.

    • Shawn EH

In! Giving us Hollywood in Rome.

    • sagecreek

Not bad enough to be an OUT, but not good enough to be an IN.

I have no idea how you’ll count this — an abstention?

    • BayTampaBay

I like the dress and she looks good but the dress also makes her look pudgy which I suspect she is not.

    • lrhoff

Out — terrible color, and it look as if she has a cow pie on her head.  She is a much more attractive person than is depicted here.

    • MK03

Oof. That looks very poorly made.

    • TheOriginalLulu

You may be bitches, but you’re dead-on. That dress is horrible on her and that hairstyle is not her friend.

    • korilian

She still looks good, but not ‘the most beautiful women in the fricking world’ good. For Pén that’s definitely an off day.

    • Deborah Lipp

On the bright side, if it’s possible for an outfit to make Penelope Cruz look fat, then clearly it doesn’t matter what I wear.

    • ChelseaNH

No, you’re right, it’s not flattering her shape.  OUT.

    • Patrick Cleary

If the lining were a more interesting color, this would be stunning. As it is, it kind of washes her out.

    • TAGinMO

Objectively, I really can’t disagree with any of TLo’s comments, but she looks very pretty here. Gotta go with IN.

I think it’s the white lining that saves the look. If it were nude lining, it’s be heinous. But those pops of white coming through the lace create some nice areas of contrast and emphasis.

    • marilyn

Out.  Too many things are wrong:  The color, the bustline, the hair. her coloring.  That dress makes her hips look lumpy.  How is that possible?  She is a skinny girl, and always looks spectacular.  Well, almost always.

    • Sage Andersen

OUT.  I think her makeup and face are lovely, and i really like the color of the dress on her.  but the shape is just odd.  somehow she manages to have small boobs and no waist?  it feels like a not your dress situation.

    • Merneith

      OUT. Feh.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

OUT, not her dress. Looks like a newly-minted starlet’s first go-round.

    • Amanda

She blends in with her dress…out!

    • guest2visits

I ‘ve always found lace to be overly heavy and cloying, in any color. It’s one of those materials that needs careful if not spare
placement or execution.  Only white bridal dresses seem to carry the oppressive weight and intricacy a little lighter.
Even though this is not really her dress; in color or style,- she ‘s still looking very pretty.

    • Kayceed

Dusty rose was quite the fashionable color when I was a youngster. I’ll give her an “in.” Not fanstastic, but nothing wrong enough to merit an “out.”

    • ghopping

aww she looks fine you guys, in.

    • Beardslee

    • Ebba Svantesson

    • mom2ab

Horrible fit, horrible color, horrible makeup (unless racoon is the new smokey) and pile o’poo hair.  All around worst for Ms Cruz who is entirely too beautiful to leave the house looking like this.

    • butter nut

this is someone else’s dress, not hers.  she’s too pretty to be wearing something so blah.  IN, but unenthusiastically.

    • Laurie Bergman

I love the makeup and the sash effect at the waist, but not enough to overcome the twirled top knot and the curtain-y fabric of the dress.  OUT.

    • janetjb

Her lovely figure has disappeared and the color isn’t very flattering.  Her hair and makeup are very nice.

    • Fifi LaRoux

It’s doing something funny to her waist and hips. And it makes her skin look more orange than it should be.

    • Mathilde

As much as I love the lace, which is beautiful, the color is  too close of her skin tone. Besides, although I don’t find anything wrong with her chest, the shape of the dress is other what matronly and unflattering. OUT.

    • Dr Skylaser

Out.  Yuck.  Only someone as spectacularly attractive as P.C. here could make anybody even ask this question.

    • Melanie Cozad

I can’t with this dress. The fit is poor, plus her eye makeup and hair are too severe.

    • Mexxoo

I noticed the bust, first thing, too.  However, I thought that the second shot was more to look at her armpit than oddly fitting chest.  If you’re going to wear a strapless/sleeveless whatever for photographs, you should shave shortly before you go out – not early that morning or late the night before, particularly if you have naturally dark hair.

At any rate, I think she’s trying really hard to look regal and romantic.  Given that it’s the premier of “To Rome with Love,” I’m going to give her a pass on this one – IN.

    • momogus

    • Jamie Gentry

IN! she looks delightfully classic and charming.

    • Sara__B

Out. I expect more from her than a too-long, rather matronly lace gown that matches her skin that matches her lipstick. (I never noticed how long her ears are before, so perhaps that’s not the best hair style, either.)

    • kimmeister

I actually like the hair, but everything else is out.

    • M Carlson

I wore a bridesmaid’s dress this EXACT shade and type of lace. I think that says it all.

    • SapphoPoet

IN. I think an argument could be made for a deeper shade of rose, but I think she looks classically lovely.

    • Cathy S

      I think she’s In.

    • tween00

IN. Needs better hair, but she’s fab.

    •!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

A body like hers should not be hard to dress.

    • Cassie

Ew, no. She’s washed out and that topknot hurts my feelings. OUT.

    • Liz

      Yes but you’re right.

    • harleydear

Out. For all the reasons T Lo cited. A good dress should act like artwork hung in a living room: ornament, enhance, delight, but never distract, detract, or over-power.

    • Judy_J

This dress is so NOT her color.  And you’re right, she does look, shall we say, less endowed up top than she normally does.

    • Violina23

Would a necklace have been that wrong for a dress like this? Nothing huge, but something small and understated. She just looks… not completely dressed.

    • CharCrop

OUT! OUT! OUT! …and OUT for that hair as well! UGH! Bet if I saw the shoes, I’d OUT them too! Looks like a DIY evening…stylist’s night off!

    • ccm800

OUT!!!!!! She looks like one of those scented satchels old dames keep in their boudoir.

    • Rebecca

      Completely unflattering–hate the topknot, too.

    • Dave

IN, but not a resounding in.  She can do better, but she’s not pulling a Meester here.  It’s almost as though she got insider info on what the backdrop would look like and tried to play matchy-match with it.

    • piecesofconfetti

It’s not great, but I don’t think it’s bad enough for an out. So, IN.

    • cleep1000

IN. It’s pretty. She’s pretty. What’s not to like?

    • BrightsideSusan

I agree on all counts.  Why do hairstylist keep trying those topknot buns – they look so bad most of the time. Also, post baby boob shrink is pretty standard.

    • MoreShoes

OUT. Her head looks like an egg.

    • TieDye64

While I’m not crazy about the dress nor the bun, I can’t justify anything but an IN.

    • mjude

i agree i think she looks quite pretty. IN.

    • AWStevens

TLo are def NOT bitches.  Dollar store table cloth this IS!  OUT

    • Martha Jackson Deutsch

IN. Her boobs are looking weird, and didn’t she have a baby recently so they should appear larger, not smaller?
Anyway, this looks so good by comparison to what we’ve been looking at lately that I just have to give her an in.

    • Joyce VG

This looks like a dress you would wear for your second or third wedding.  Not horrible just kinda meh.  IN?

    • Roey Thorpe

So IN.  She’s the most beautiful woman in Hollywood, in my opinion.

    • WordyDoodles

I thought, “Pretty!” until I read “tablecloth you’d buy at the dollar store,” and suddenly that was all I could see. Still an IN, but man, the power of suggestion is strong.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

OUT.  The dress doesn’t fit her correctly, and it really makes her look thick around the middle, which she isn’t.  Smashed boobs is not a good look for anyone.  Hair is too severe.  Her makeup is beautiful.  I like what I can see of the clutch.  She’s such a gorgeous woman – why does she get it wrong so often??

    • Pannyx

Man, what a horrible color on her. Definite out.

    • Jennifer Peters-Ahnberg

It’s not terrible, but there are a lot of little problems that keep it from being IN. Out, I say, but reluctantly and with love.

    • Stubenville

Meh. It looks like a tablecloth or a bedspread from a hotel in Boca.

    • Liana Brooks

Meh… she’s pretty, the dress is not. OUT

    • kelsita421

      the overall effect is IN.

    • joe_tey83

Boobs definitely look like they are deflating.

But, on the whole, it’s leaning more towards IN.

    • lovelyivy

That hair is throwing the silhouette off- her head looks teeny, her boobs disappear, and the boy is making the waist look weird. Basically, the dress does zero to emphasize her abundant natural beauty. OUT.

    • rumcg66

I agree that this is an OUT. No, she doesn’t need the girls hanging out but this makes her look truly shapeless, not just the girls, but she has no waist in this either. I don’t love the color on her either (but I might have dusty pink lace trauma from the 80s. My junior prom dress was dusty pink lace. Shudder)

    • StrandedFashionista

Sad to say, it falls apart in the details. The fit is ALL off. OUT.

    • demidaemon

I’m just not feeling it. And their is something off about the fit, while that color is hideous. OUT.

    • Kate Lorenz

I like the hair, but the dress is a little off the mark in sizing and shape for her.  Not terrible, but she usually looks better.  Makeup is great.

    • Amye

Out!  More than any other lace (okay, maybe not off-white), this looks like my grandmother’s table dress.

    • BazoDee

      Right on all counts!  OUT!

    • bellafigura1

Yep, out.  This is a good example of why I mostly don’t love D&G dresses. They always look to me like the body in them is working to fit the dress, and not that the dress is custom worked to fabulously flatter the body.

    • howdoilook

      In. Beautiful!

    • Julie Chase

Out. It ages her and I hate the color.

    • ErmengardeGreen

It’s nearly impossible for her to look out-and-out bad, but this is a misuse of her assets, I agree. She just looks wider than she needs to, straight-up-and-down, and washed out. A brighter lip and hair down might have mitigated this (though it would have interrupted the ’60s Italian vibe I assume they were going for), but the dress would still be unflattering. I’m not sure her boobs are truly bigger, though, when she’s not breastfeeding. I think she may just be able to cutlet them up when a different dress calls for it. (Anyway, ‘out’ is my vote.)

    • girliecue

Although she had definitely looked better and I’m not a big fan of the big bun on top of the head, she’s still In. And you boys are right about her girls. Even pre-baby they were definitely bigger.

    • Jessica O’Connell

Agreed on all points! Her boobs have GOT to be hurting there… OUT.

    • PeaceBang

Of COURSE you’re bitches, and you are also 100% CORRECT. OUT.

    • enchanted216

I think she looks pretty good, for a change:)  IN.

    • Nicole Renee

WHY would you want a bun that sits an inch behind your hairline? WHY? OUT.

    • jw_ny

I’ve seen her look much better but aside from that horrible bun, I really can’t fault her much.  I love her eye makeup…usually dislike such a heavy look, but it’s just the drama that this otherwise semi-drab look needed.   It looks like she intentionally matched the pink of the movie title/logo, and the lace goes with the romance movie theme.  Perhaps too matchy matchy all the way around between matching the movie and matching her skin tone to her dress, but I rather like it …and her.  ;)

    • altalinda

      Out, you’re not bitches.

    • sleepycat

Pretty although it fits terribly, a conditional IN

    • ringthing

In, I think she looks fine

    • Lina_bee

Out for the dress (style, fit, and color), IN for hair, makeup, jewelry, etc. The dress reminds me of curtains and the fit of the bodice is definitely weird unless she had a sudden secret breast reduction (doubtful). This looks disappointingly like something D&G pulled out of their attic.

    • Eovaai

      OUT. It doesn’t sit properly.

    • Eovaai

      OUT. It doesn’t sit properly.

    • guestela

    • unbornfawn

OUT. The color is wrong for her skin and the boob fit is horrible.

    • GTrain

OUT. It erases her waist and I hate the hair.
p.s. “Aren’t her boobs bigger than that?” is exactly what I was thinking when I read your line about it!

    • formerlyAnon

In. It’s not show stopping, but it’s a LONG way from out.

    • marciekr

OUT.  Her hair looks ridiculous and the rest looks too washed out.

    • Julia McLean

      Beautiful! In.

    • ThaliaMenninger

I don’t like anything about this. Even her earrings looks weird. She is totally out in her pink lace skin look.

    • CQAussie

I think the dress is pretty but I don’t think it’s working on her.  Plus her hair doesn’t enhance the silhouette.  OUT.

    • Verascity

I hate it. I hate everything about it. OUT.

    • aristida_girl

Out..also don’t like the lippy, something brighter would have helped this outfit…

    • Judih1

      out – tablecloth

    • Louise Bryan

Moving from nude shoe to nude dress.  Not loving this.  Out.

    • Sorana Tarmu

Nope, sadly, it’s an OUT. Boobs are weird and shape overall messed up.

    • Thom

The overall effect is ‘pretty’ in a very ’60’s Roman couture’ kinda way, but this lace dress, in particular, irks me a bit. The pattern and scale of the lace is very much like a tablecloth, the color doesn’t highlight her skin tone well, the bustier makes her look smaller-chested, and the sheen of the lace and lining make the dress seem impossibly tight on her. Still, if you can’t say that Halle Berry looks bad in that shadow-casting leopard satin dress, then I won’t say Penelope looks bad here. IN.

    • samo_samo

      She looks radiant – IN!

    • mellorcr

The bust fit is weird on this.  Typically one aims for a smooth silhouette on the torso thats narrows at the waist.  This is very tight on top, expands outwards a bit as it hits her lower ribs and then tapers again toward the waist. You can see how tight it is at the top by the way the flesh at the back of her armpit is literally popping out.  A dress like this needs to be custom-fitted to the wearers shape and bust size, but instead it looks as if they just tightened it up at the neckline to correct some gapping in the bust without bothering to account for the actual shape of her body.

    • MarissaLG

IN! I think she looks really pretty! I think her hair and  makeup are great and the dress really suits her!

OUT. Gorgeous the parts that aren’t the dress. Hate the color of fabric against her beautiful skin.

In, even thought I’m reminded of an Easter dress I wore in grade school. I still love lace.

      Out for me.
      She looks just bleh.

She looks lovely, but very sad. Her eyes are not smiling. Maybe she doesn’t like travel anymore now that she has a baby??

OUT! SOmething very odd about the fit and the color is just weird. Plus it matches the color of the “To Rome With Love” lettering and for some reason that makes it even worse. So, as beautiful as she is, she shouldda picked a different frock.

The bodice is doing all kinds of weird and unflattering things to her boobs, ribs, and general silhouette.  Lousy color too.  I say OUT.

I’m shocked! I absolutely love this look. Elegant, and stunning. IN
