In or Out: Michelle Williams in Giambattista Valli

Posted on April 25, 2012

Michelle, your dress could use a little editing.

Michelle Williams attends Tribeca Film Festival 2012 After-Party For “Take This Waltz” in NYC in a Giambattista Valli dress.

Giambattista Valli Spring 2012 Collection/Model: Caitlin Lomax (IMG)

We think there are just too many elements for one poor little dress to have to bear. It’s a cute dress; but we don’t quite love it on her. It doesn’t help that, except for the pink and yellow parts, this whole outfit, right down to the shoes, matches her hair. Even with the pops of color she still looks washed out. Still, it’s about as Michelle Williams as a dress can get. There’s no way we’d ever put this under a “Girl, That’s Not Your Dress” entry. It’s TOTALLY her dress. Maybe she shouldn’t have paired it with those shoes. Or maybe it’s time to switch up the pale blonde pixie cut.

Vote Now!

IN! Don’t know what you bitches are going on about. It all works for me.

OUT! Twee as fuck, once again.

The Bitter Kittens declared Taylor Schilling’s table runner IN and Alice Eve’s boobstravaganza also IN, but just barely.

Out. She looks like a toddler who just woke up from her nap, and is playing dress up with Mommy’s lipstick and shoes.

    • Nelliebelle1197

Or wrapped strips of mommy’s upholstery around her body

  • unbornfawn

OUT. I am disturbed by the nipple flowers.

    • famousamy

Me too.. it’s all I see!

      • same here

        •  I didn’t notice it until I read this! Now that’s all I see too. Nipples and belly button.

          • YES! It’s awful haha

          • TRSmith

And the flowers/nipples/belly button are just a tiny bit offset to our right as well. She looks like she has twisted nipples.

          • Twisted Nipples. I love their new album.

      •  Yes. Very Unfortunate placement. OUT.

    • inkstainedmom

Okay, now I can’t unsee that.

      • Rrroza

My first glance too—nipples and bellybutton. I’ve seen this sort of placement before and have never understood how it gets past the decision makers.

I kind of like this dress otherwise, but agree needs more contrast. (The overall look was pale on the model as well.) I’m tired of the pixie cut too. So: OUT.

      • LuisaNL

yeah, I can’t either. I am so over Michelle Williams twee look. OUT.

        • Can we put a moratorium on Michelle Williams posts until she learns to dress like a grown up? It’s the same thing over and over again.

    • l3icest3r

Those flowers are right on top of her saggy nurples.

    • Out. But then, I dislike the dress of itself, not just on MW.

    • Aah! Now I can’t unsee it!! OUT

    •  OMG now I can’t unsee them.

    • Jellybish

Not even nipple flowers, which would be bad enough, but askew nipple flowers.

    • I was prepared to give her an in (I do love her style), but now that’s all I can see. Thank you 😉

    • Cathy S

Great. Now I’m seeing nipple flowers. It’s Out, even without them. There’s just too much there. Maybe if that flowery stuff in the middle were gone and there was more of the yellow.

    • ChiKat67

So am I!  The up-close photos aren’t as bad, but the full body shots?  It’s an anatomical outline of where her nipples & bellybutton should be

    • Yes! Nipple, nipple, tummybutton. Eucch!

    • rumcg66

I thought I was the only one! The minute I saw the pictures I noticed it and I can’t unsee it.

  • EEKstl

OUT.  It’s her dress in style but not in color.  She looks wan.  She works much better with a pop of color, a la her salmon gown of Awards Season Past.

  • OUT. I hate her hair. I want to slap her, drag her to the stylist, and tell her she isn’t a three-year-old boy. Please, pretty please, stop dressing like this! She looks like she played with mommy’s makeup after a well-being but possibly drug-addled grandma  made her a dress out of curtains and pillow cases.

  • Out.  Love the top half, hate the bottom.  Twee is her thing, but the dress just has too much going on.

  • Reminds me of Mondo’s Nanette Lepore dress, don’t think that shape is flattering on anyone, out.

  • BazoDee

WORST placed red flowers ever. I can’t see anything else but nipple and bellybutton red flowers.

  • M

Looks like she rolled around in Candy Spelling’s wrapping paper room.

    • introspective

thought I was the only one who remembered that cray cray woman and all the rooms in her mansion designated for the most insignificant shit in life itself- dolls, luggage, wrapping paper, etc. ah the life of the 1%

  • sarahofalessergod

Yellow is one of my favorite colors, but it’s an unfortunate addition here.  Like someone splashed paint on her while she was walking into the building.  Take away the random yellow and I could be on board with this.

  • OUT.  “Designers, use the rest of your leftover fabrics and ribbons to design a dress for Michele Williams”…horrid.

  • I feel like the layer of fabric right above the pleating is out of place and throwing things off a bit. However, I get the impression this is much more striking in person and it is definitely a Michelle Williams dress. I’m going to go out on a limb and say IN.

  • SpcilK

In – granted there is alot going on, but it works on her. This is her thing, I don’t think anyone else could pull it off as well as she does.

  • TAGinMO

New Rule: Embroidered Areolae = Automatic OUT.

  • gsk241

I guess I’m in the minority, but I think she looks cute.  IN

    •  I was with ya’.  Just wanted you to know so you didn’t feel lonely.  I like it too.

      • gsk241

Thanks!  Although the boob flowers are a little weird, this is definitely in her wheelhouse.

        • DCSheehan

Hooray, more in’s to hang with!

  • Rebecca Johnson

I think the yellow is where this dress goes awry. Adding in that shade below the waist of a dress will always remind me of pee.

Go spend some more time with Jason Segel being adorable in public and forget this ever happened, Michelle.

  • MilaXX

IN, Yes it’s twee but it’s also very Michelle.

  • jw_ny

    OUT!  Easy one.  🙂

Pink flowers at nipple and navel area…really!?  Aside from that, the rest of the dress is pretty ugly anyways…way too many prints.

  • fireontiger

Out. I don’t like it. Too many elements, wrong colors, all… wrong.

And does anyone else think that those flowers look like nipples? It’s really distracting.

  • MissAnnieRN

is it just me or does she always carry her arms in awkward positions in photos?  She never looks like she is genuinely comfortable being photographed on the RC.  I mean, I wouldn’t be either.  No judgment.  Just – that’s part of her job…..

As for the dress, it’s not doing anything for me except reminding me of those little dresses on the side of my screen from zulily.  So yeah, toddler inspired….

  • RoxieRider

I love it. I love the shoes. My only complaint is that the brocade band is too heavy.

  • donnaINseattle

I actually like this dress and think it is lovely. It may be a bit pale, but her skin looks rosy, healthy, and natural in it. I think a more vibrantly colored dress could cause her to look pale, unless she did a tacky fake tan to combat that. I will agree it feels a bit young, but it certainly isn’t out of the question. She looks genuine in it, I say IN.

  • UGH, twee as fuck for sure. Maybe if she dyed her hair brown and grew it out? Or even a darker shade of blonde, just something so she didn’t look so damn childish.

  • Out. Too twee. And her poses don’t help.

  • Breatheinthegood

It reminds me in the shape and layers of Mondo’s Nanette Lapore design on PR All Stars.

  • Patricia Gillett

I like this on her in theory but the fact that it’s a smidge too long and a smidge too loose in the waist made it cross over into matronly territory. Almost like an expensive housedress.

  • guest2visits

Yes please; no more pixie for you! In my mind,- it never looked that good for her. At least not that cut.
This is a very cute dress; but it’s too boxy on her. It needs a more pinched waist to stop it from being a 20s flapper.

  • TheLaurenJean

Out. That sucker looks like she wandered into the twee fabric store and twirled around in the scrap pile.

  • Yes, it is Her Dress; has to be hers, it looks bad even on the model! But that’s part of the problem.
The rest of the problem is it’s ugly. And I hate the shoes.

  • Sobaika Mirza

Doesn’t she always look a bit wan? It’s a cute dress though, so IN.

  • Out and yes, twee as fuck.

  • howdoilook

I…I just don’t know! I kind of love the dress for being so schizophrenic and still pretty. But maybe I just want to give Michelle an OUT in general. Or at least her hair. I really can’t decide.

  • SneakyKitty

I like the top of the dress, but the bottom sort of looks like a lampshade.  I dunno, though, the more I look at it the more I like it on her.  And I like her pixie hair, I kind of hope she keeps it just to irritate people who want her to change it.

  • Out! Too busy and baby doll!

  • My reply verbatim! “I didn’t notice it until I read this! Now that’s all I see”

  • In. She looks like herself, in spite of the embroidered aureola. Love the lipstick.

  • Frankendress.

  • funkypeanut

Out. This is obviously from the PR make a dress from an old lampshade challenge.

  • Synnamin

    it’s a frankendress, but it’s a cute frankendress. IN

  • introspective

It seems like a nice idea gone wrong what with the nipple action and the overload of prints that all combine to give off a 70s bathroom wallpaper and tile effect.

great fit + bad pattern = out. sorry Mich.

  • Tracy_Flick

Out. What an unbelievably unflattering shape.

  • Sophie Collier

The nipple-enhancing flowers are more distracting than the badly-lined dress from the other day (you know, where it looked like muff was showing thru?)  Other than that, it’s darned adorable.  Yep, she looks pale and washed out, but it’s still very much her dress.  Also would love to see it on Emma Watson or Zoe Saldana.

  • tired_mommy

OUT–she’s supposed to be at a film festival after-party, not church.

  • ChelseaNH

Out.  That dress isn’t just busy, it’s frantic.  And probably bipolar.

  • She always looks like one stroke from being a complete frump.

  • kimmeister

Out, for the following reasons and in this order:
    1. Nipple flowers
    2. Too busy
    3. Unflattering shape

    • You know, if the yellow pattern that just began at the waist had made up a whole, solid skirt … it might have been very pretty. Still TAF, but pretty!

  • leftcoastpickle

OUT – ooooh, it’s so awful! The more I look at that dress, the worse it gets. I love her though, in general I find her cute as a button.

  • AlexisPayne

It’s a dress made out of wall paper samples, OUT.

  • OUT! It looks like her grannie panties (as opposed to Jane’s sexy midriff over in Mad Men) are peeking through with that hip-level pink. MY EYES!!

  • kingderella

its a little much but shes pulling it off. love the silhouette of the skirt. IN.

  • kelsita421

almost working for me because it’s so her, but no — can’t unsee the nipple flowers either. OUT.

  • oatmealpie

    Great lipstick color, though.

  • M Carlson

This is a dress made from the scraps of my grandmother’s sewing basket. Out.

  • janetjb

I like the pink fabric, except for the unfortunate print placement.

  • granddelusion

Isn’t she a little young for the comb-forward?

  • PeggyOC

Out, because it’s not a well constructed dress.  When you do those tube dresses, they have to fit perfectly or they just make you look bumpy and odd.  This is a bad dress.

  • l3icest3r

I admit though, this is her dress; therefore, it is an automatic Out.

  • Wow. Can’t understand the disgust. I think she looks great and I like the dress. IN

  • Out because the dress is annoying and I’d rather see pictures of her with Jason Segel.

  • BayTampaBay

OUT!  That is one fugly dress.

  • Beardslee

IN just because she is consistent in her style and I give her credit for having her own fashion identity.

  • BrooklynBomber

    “Twee as fuck,” right?
    Eek. Out.

  • giiiirrrr

God, she is twee.  That super-girly look on a grown woman, ugh.  She needs to get a little edgy.  I just want her to dye her hair purple and style it in a fauxhawk, get some crazy tattoos and maybe a couple of piercings, and *then* wear that dress.

Um, that’s an actual OUT and a very hypothetical IN.

  • TheOriginalLulu

The dress is kind of ugly and does nothing for her.

Anyway, I’m insanely jealous of this woman’s skin. It always looks so satiny smooth and glowy. I know there’s makeup involved, but I always notice how amazing her skin looks in photos and I’ve come to the conclusion that she’s one of those really annoying women with impossibly perfect skin.

  • pattyw

Stop telling her to change her hair. She looks amazing in the cut and it’s such a welcome departure from all the celebrities sporting ridiculous extensions. As someone who also sports short hair, and constantly feels some weird sort of pressure to conform to the “women have long hair, men have short hair” dictate, I love that Michelle does her own thing.

    • I feel the same way. I have pretty much the same haircut as hers, a short pixie with the side swept bangs, and I love it. My relatives, male and female, and random people (strangers!) have told me that I should grow my hair out, keep it long to look more like a “real” woman/lady, and it’s incredibly aggravating to keep people pushing this idea that in order to be considered a “real” woman, you should have long hair. I don’t hate long hair, I just hate it on myself. I love Michelle Williams and her style (although I hate this dress) and it’s partly because she’s one of the prominent actresses who bucks the trend by having short hair.

  • Ali

    IN. Love this!

  • IMNAngryLiberal

Out – this is a really unfortunate dress.  It doesn’t look good on the model and doesn’t look good on Michelle.

  • siriuslover

I hate the fact that the pink flowers look like nipples. Sorry, out.

  • Vaniljekjeks

Out.  Far too twee.   She needs to stop dressing like a 5 year old.

  • ringthing

I don’t think that’s anybody’s dress, over the age of 8, at least. It’s a wallpaper sample book. Out.

  • MzzPants

I’m agreeing with the others.  Nipples and navel and yellow hips are all I see.  Plus, I imagine she and Elle Fanning had a cage match over this one:
‘I’m paler!’   ‘No, I’M paler, biotch.  Getcher fucking hair out of your face and gimme the damn dress.  RRR!’

  • judith traherne

It’s fine until the pleats. Jarring note of verticality in a horizontal-themed dress.

  • marilyn

Out.  Too much unrelated stuff in the dress.  The two flowers strategically placed in the nipple area is immature on someone’s part.  If she wants to do the monochromatic look, even if it is to match her hair, she should pick a better dress.  This looks like a PR nightmare.

  • Out. “Twee as fuck” has become synonymous with “Michelle Williams” AND it’s a weird-ass dress besides.

  • Out. She doesn’t have hips or thighs, but the yellow pleats across her thighs makes them look like they exploded.  Sorry, sweetie.

  • IN. I’m obsessed with this look. Fuq the h8ers.

    • Well, you could at least actually write “FUCK THE HATERS”. Geez.

  • IN. I’m obsessed with this look. Fuq the h8ers.

  • Totally her and I don’t mind it being a little washed out, but that yellow clashes horribly with the pink. So In for the top, Out at the start of that ugly yellow stuff. Too bad.

  • Totally her and I don’t mind it being a little washed out, but that yellow clashes horribly with the pink. So In for the top, Out at the start of that ugly yellow stuff. Too bad.

  • OUT. Definitely deep into lampshade territory. And the pink roses make it look like her boobs are oddly placed.

  • OUT. Definitely deep into lampshade territory. And the pink roses make it look like her boobs are oddly placed.

  • piecesofconfetti

IN, it’s so her. I love it.

  • CharCrop

    VERY IN! It’s so her!

  • Kirsten Henry

    out. that’s super awkward

  • bailey debruynkops

i do think she should grow her hair out, and this would have been stronger with a camel-colored shoe, but this dress is loverly and an IN

  • ChaquitaPhilly

    Beautiful. The hair, too!

  • Ana_ragu

out. and it is too long on her too.

  • Out – her hips are looking huge here.

  • another_laura

GAAK!  Out, damned dress!  Fabric combinations that are not aesthetically pleasing, too pale for Ms. Williams, that color of shoe on her.  Just out.

  • Carlodog

Aside from the nipples & bellybutton flowers, could she alter her red carpet stance just once?  She always stands awkwardly like she’s being wanded by an invisible TSA agent.

  • Cathy B.

Gee, the way those flowers are placed.. it looks like nipples and a huge belly button.

  • TieDye64

OUT. This just doesn’t work on her at all. Actually, the more I look at it the less I like it.

I’m a fan of the pixie cut, but agree it’s time for something new.

  • Ugh no, OUT. I actually shouted “UGH” when I scrolled.

  • ItchyInKentucky

Fleurs De Mamelon! It’s twee yet vulgar.  OUT!

  • Sunshine16

Out.  Keep the hair, put on something colorful & bright & see if the earth doesn’t spin into the sun.  I dare you, dear

  • OUT but not for the twee, for looking like a book of wallpaper samples.

  • Now we know she’s not shaped like a triangle, so I will go out on a limb and say, GIRL,THAT IS NOT YOUR DRESS.

  • Now we know she’s not shaped like a triangle, so I will go out on a limb and say, GIRL,THAT IS NOT YOUR DRESS.

  • Lina_bee

OUT. Love the shape, hate the prints, hate the mix of prints, hate the overabundance of beige.

  • Lina_bee

OUT. Love the shape, hate the prints, hate the mix of prints, hate the overabundance of beige.

  • alyce1213

    OUT.  Make the twee stop.
This dress would have been so much better in maybe two colors, maybe some rich, deep colors for a change.

  • kikisayshi

    OUT. Potato sack.

  • It looks like a classier version of Mondo’s dress from that designed with Nanette Lepore fabric and won in project runway allstars.

  • lrhoff

I just don’t care for the dress, regardless of whose body is in it.

  • how TLO didn’t mention the uneven flower nipples is beyond me.

  • TSkot

She looks adorable in spite of the dress.  IN

  • 3rdsister

Out.  Nothing to look at here, folks.  Just move along.

    Also, TAF, new favorite acronym.

  • Joyce VG

It’s Twee but oh so pretty to me. IN.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

i almost like this dress; in fact, i like it well enough to be put down in the plus column.
otoh, it would be oh so very much improved if she’d worn it w/ shoes of the same, or similar, furioso type as weareth the model.

  • guestela

  • oohsparkley!

I was going to give it an in.  Then I read a few comments now all I can see is the unfortunate placement of the flowers.

  • That is super unflattering. It gives her a wacky fat tire. OUT.

  • out. I am just so sick of her ‘ish.

  • nannypoo

This is one butt-ugly dress. Also my hatred for her silly pixie hairdo knows no bounds.

  • Susan Crawford

OUT. (Is it just me, or does this look like the winning number Mondo produced toward the end of PRAS?) Just too, too, twee – as always with Michelle. Looks like she’s on her way to ride the big carousel in Central Park. Please, darling – GROW UP!

  • Laylalola

OUT. Over this look from her.

  • I wish the white strip at her shoulder was more of the floral and I wish the pink strip at her hips was yellow and that whole yellow section was one ombre type thing instead of just ombre on the second to last strip. This dress is really cute otherwise and I wanna say yes, but OUT.

  • TheDivineMissAnn

A dress made from fabrics in the clearance bin.

  • mom2ab

I can’t get past the unfortunate or maybe deliberate placement of the pink flower nipple/belly button triangle. Out.

  • ziarah

Those pink flowers are right where her nipples and bellybutton look like they’d be, if you could see through the dress.

  • msdamselfly

It could be nice looking if she didnt “little girl”  it up with the way she stands and her expression.

  • DominoEstella

IN.  It suits her and she pulls it off.

  • demidaemon

OUT. This dress has multiple personality disorder, and they are all clashing.

  • Its enough IN anyways, barely. It reminds me of Mondo’s random strips of fabric dress this season.

  • altalinda

    Out, TAF once again.

  • formerlyAnon

How can you ask? Out, out, out!

There’s something about the fabrics, the textures of the banding, the proportions or some darn thing that’s making her look awkward, when she (of all people) ought to be able to pull off adorable, here.

  • Nonnah

Out.  And from a distance, it looks like she’s wearing pink pasties.

  • IN. Love the color palette, even on her. The patterns, and fabric mixing in the dress is FAB. I want one. =/

  • allisankelly

I’ve had a few days to think about her in this dress and it’s definitely her dress, but it’s also definitely OUT.

  • Why no leg makeup?  No excuse for that.

  • Ezmartin

    That dress is ugly.

  • lesmaha

That yellow on that dress is such a mistake–OUT.

  • Aly Light

  • butterflysunita

OUT.  That dress hurts my eyes.

  • greatscoutm

Hmmm? I love her, but the dress kind of reminds me of a ribbon display rack at a gift wrapping supply store, turned sideways.

  • Out: 1) her dress looks like I did when I was four and my mother let me pick out my clothes for the first time and I wore all my favorite items together, regardless of whether they matched; 2) somehow, it looks like there are stand-out flowers on the top in the general vicinity of nipples and a navel – very distracting.

  • lizajane1776

    Out! Too too twee.

  • 3boysful

Echoing the nipple/bellybutton flower remarks.  Plus it is twee.  Plus, it needs yellow gladiator sandals.

  • greyhoundgirl

    Oy.  Out.

  • Jangle57

She’s too short for a dress with so many sections to it; the height of the model makes all the difference to me.  OUT

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

IN!  Love it, except for the shoes.  I would have paired it with yellow strappy sandels.

  • fashionablylate

  • cleep1000

The bodice is so boxy. It’s unflattering. Plus, pick one color element. OUT.

  • SatelliteAlice

I kind of like the flappery-ness of it but I wish it wasn’t so random.  I do really really hate the print just at the top though.  It doesn’t work with the other prints and really did it need that one.  Could they not have used one of the others for that bit?  Out I think but just barely.  I like her all twee… just not that haphazard.

  • prettybigkitty

That’s not a split personality dress.   More like multiple personality disorder.  Seven dresses for the price of one.

  • IN

  • boweryboy

    OUT! OUT! OUT!

I can’t even.  I’m done with her.  I just want to slap her.  The twee-ness and that tired ass pixie cut has an expiration date and she’s gone sour a LONG time ago.

  • bluefish

That is one hell of a beautiful dress, nipple flowers or no.

  • ccm800

OUT – the nipples/belly hole blossoms are ridiculous

  • TomBord

    very project runaway…

  • That’s a mighty ugly dress.

  • quiltrx

    OUT.  Twee as fuck.

(which is kind of weird…it’s not really all that twee on the model, but Michelle manages to twee-i-fy it.  Blech.)

  • NurseEllen

Oh, so very OUT.  Twee is a kind description; I’d stick with the simpler adjective, ugly.

  • The dress is overdesigned, but it’s cute, and nipple flowers notwithstanding, it’s Michelle, and it’s IN.

  • OUT. Boring standard Michelle Williams style tweeness

  • ChristySchiff

I think it hits her a little too low in the waist, the whole thing kind of pulls her down, and makes the top seem so boxy.  But I’d still love to wear that dress and pull it off as well as she is here.

  • momogus

I like the shape and style of the dress, but would have preferred it in one fabric instead of 17. Out.

  • sagecreek

OUT. Probably looked doable on the hanger, but no.

  • tsid2012

I really like the dress, it’s well done for a dress with multiple fabrics.  I’m thinking it is more of a fit issue, it seems just a scoosh boxy & loose on her.  Maybe a little tailoing would have been helpful but maybe not with a borrowed dress.  A really big gold cuff would have helped too.

  • Not a good look – OUT. I love the pixie on her, but I’d like to see her go a bit darker, either brownish or reddish…

  • Louise Bryan

bleah! What a washout, and a busy washout, at that.  Reminds me a lot of her Oscar dress, only it’s been shortened and bleached.

  • Rand Ortega

    She’s wearing fancy wrapping paper.

  • Rand Ortega

    She’s wearing fancy wrapping paper.

  • Out, out, out–on top of the everything else of it, it’s got nipple flowers, for crying out loud!

    • pepper76

Yeah, that stood out to me right away!

  • OUT: That strip of exposed underskirt (among 14 other elements) kills it for me.

  • CatherineRhodes

    IN. Love it.

  • AWStevens

As much as I love Vidal Sassoon, Michelle Williams’ hairdo has to go.  And I believe with all my heart she borrowed this dress from her 6 year-old daughter.  OUT

  • Lisa

No!  No no no, the pale blonde Pixie cut is awesome on her, don’t tell her to switch it!  And actually, even though the dress is a little on the twee side, I still love what she has on – she looks great!

  • Zippypie

OUT – put down the twee, Michelle!

  • Dhammadina

  • lilazander

In. But I think it’s because Michelle is so radiant. The dress is rather twee, but still think it suits her and it emhasises her femininity.

  • The pink flowers on the chest look like slightly off-center nipples. I can’t unsee them. Unfortunate pattern.

  • Liz

twee is fuck, but strangely comfortable with it.
