In or Out: Krysten Ritter in Alice + Olivia

Posted on April 11, 2012

We feel shame. We’re such little whores.

Krysten Ritter attends the NYC screening of “Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23” in Alice + Olivia by Stacey Bendet.

We’re telling you this not because we’re actual little whores but because we’re going to fall all over ourselves praising a black lace dress after a full year of declaring that we are officially over black lace dresses.

But look at how cute it is! Look at how well it suits her!

Okay, fine. We’re not going to try and convince you. Either this dress allows you to overcome your presumed boredom with black lace dresses or not. But isn’t her hair cute? And doesn’t that sassy patent belt really make the look? Or is it the red shoes? The point is, we pretty much love this look from tip to toe. Now it’s up to you to decide its fate.

IN! Sassy and cute!

OUT! Matador’s mistress!

Brooklyn Decker once again disappointed the commentariat with her awkward gown and varsity jacket sleeves, which means the girl is O to the UT.

    So cute! IN!

  • terpsichory

I’m not saying she should match her lips to her shoes but one of those reds has to go!

Cute dress but then, I never had a problem with black lace.

  • I like black lace – depending on how it’s done. But for me, the lining ruins this dress. A different lining and it would have been adorable. And as for the red shoes, I saw her on The View yesterday and she looked ridiculous in them because she could barely walk: She had to hold onto her costar to walk up the 2 steps to the couches. Call me kooky, but that ruins the look of any shoe.

    • The lining makes it look -in the immortal words of the Kluminator- “Kind of chip, no?”. And the problem you noticed with the shoes may be due to the fact that they are WAY too big for her.

    • I totally agree, the lining looks makes it look a bit bunchy. I also think eyes like hers don’t need so much makeup.

  • Cathy S

    Cute cute cute. In.

  • guestela

  • tripletmom96

LOVE!!!   i think the reason this works is that the lace is fairly delicate, so it doesn’t have that “grandma’s lace curtains” look about it.  i also agree that the belt and red shoes also keep it young and fresh looking.  IN IN IN!!!!

  • IN. But then, I don’t share your distaste for lace dresses in general; they might be overused, but I still love me a beautiful lace dress.

  • MilaXX

IN! But she’s always gonna be Jane the junkie who OD’s and Walter White lets die.

    • ChiliP

Ah, Breaking Bad. She looks much better here than the last few episodes of that season. Although I don’t think Jane would ever wear this- her stomach and bra straps are too covered.

    • pattyw

For me, she’ll always be the kooky gal pal Gilmore Girls foisted on Rory her senior year.

      • joe_tey83

         I didn’t even realise that’s her!!!

    • Jennifer L.

Gah spoiler!!! We just finished season 1.

  • J’ADORE!!! IN!!

  • sunandmoon24

in in in! (now who is she?)

    • esssactly!

    • RebeccaKW

Don’t Trust the B- in 4C or something along those lines.  Some new show.  With James Van Der Beek.

  • Judy_J

Very sassy and very cute.  Big IN.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I think the difference between this and a lot of other black lace dresses is that it is lined in something other than black.  Maybe.  Love the shoes, hair and makeup are perfect.  But you’re right – the belt is FAB. IN.

  • LOVE her! She looks great 🙂 IN.

  • Outfit = IN. Adorable.

    New show = OUT. Obnoxious.

    • Iknowright, even the commercial annoys me.

    • MissAnnieRN

I can’t get past the terrible title of the show.  That’s all they could come up with?

  • random_poster

This is very cute.  IN for me!

  • howdoilook

    In, for SURE.

  • MK03

Enh. It looks good on her, but I’m not sold on the short skirt. I think it would look killer with a long mermaid silhouette.

  • leah besson

I think its adorable, although I wish the bodice fit her a little better.  either way, in.

  • DinaSews

IN.  Love all of it together.

  • BrooklynBomber

Adorable. Esp. with the red shoes. IN. Little whores.

  • IN, but I actually don’t like THESE red shoes.  Something a bit darker and not satin.  But that’s just being bitchy.

  • TheOriginalLulu

    Love the whole look. IN!

  • Emily Guillory

    In, she looks super cute

  • IN! Love love love the dress.

  • crash1212

IN. So, so cute – all of it. Love the subtle lip with the RED shoe. Love the high neckline with the shorter skirt…love the fullness of the skirt. Just…love it. That is all.

  • Anathema_Device

In. I already like lace, and the elements here are balanced pretty well.

I think the shoes are too heavy for the dress, though. I do like red, but those pumps are bit clunky/Minnie Mouse.

And you guys aren’t whores! This only goes to show that you have open minds when it comes to fashion. It makes us trust you more!

  • VioletFem

    IN. She looks super cute.

  • fireontiger

    She looks amazing!

  • hughman

Cute. And Dita Von Teese is a great fashion inspiration for this woman.

  • almondemy

how did this not get a WERQ??  She is adorable and IN, full stop!

  • siriuslover

Totally sassy and cute, and I like the shoes. In

  • So very IN!

  • IN!

  • MzzPants

    IN.  She looks fab.

  • piecesofconfetti

IN! But then again, I’ve always liked lace 😉

  • sarahofalessergod

OUT.  Her bangs are like Oscar-season Rooney Mara’s, but she can’t quite make it work.  And I am biased against Alice + Olivia now that I tried on some of their stuff and it is vanity sized beyond all belief.

  • It’s the shape. Every time a girl wears this shape you give up all your misgivings and love her. It’s The Shape of Cuteness™.

  • Krysten, I simply won’t allow you to be seen like that!  Now hand over every last bit of that ensemble and I’ll take care of it for you immediately.

    (So IN I’m gagging)

  • In, also wow, she looks 7 feet tall.

  • OUT. Mobster’s mistress.

  • Chantry Banks

In. But I want to know about that beautiful purple sweater on the cute bear behind her!

  • Liz

I love lace, but I totally respect the position of people who can’t stand it.  But this just looks great from head to toe!

  • Love except the shoes, i think a deeper red would have been better, they look pink in the picture.

  • reddhouston

    I really like this…IN.
Saw the show on Comcast OnDemand and kind of liked it to.

  • RebeccaKW

So In.  I think the pattern of lace is really helping this.   Love.

  • Pants_are_a_must

The dress, you can take or leave. I’m leaning towards “yes!” but the shoes are what I don’t care for. Suede AND that shade of red, not that great. I guess that overall it’s an IN but really, this dress requires sassier shoes.

  • In. And maybe it’s just that we were tired of black lace done the wrong way?

  • I see nothing wrong here. IN !

  • Shoelover1512

    Super cute! IN!

  • dickylarue

Totally in and for the record, the graffiti covered brick wall behind her should get an assist for making the whole photo work. She’s smoking hot and gives great face.

  • jw_ny

Very IN!  I cannot find a negative criticism or even minor flaw.  Cute, chic and sexy dress. A bit of edge with the belt and hair…pop of color with the lip and shoes…sexy smokey eye…love it all.  If one is going to go with a bold red lip…this is the shade!  So glad the shoes do not match.

  • kimmeister

I don’t dislike lace dresses on principle, but this one isn’t working for me.  Out.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I really find this actress off-putting and annoying, but, yeah, it’s a cute dress and looks good with those shoes. Grudging (lower case) in.

  • kelsita421

    Love it all! IN.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

in but i wish she’d eat just a little something.

  • PeggyOC

In. Super cute.  The shoes and the lipstick being so different is a little disconcerting, but nowhere near enough to push this into “out” territory.

  • IN! It’s super-cute look, but I think it could look even better if the neckline was different/lower.
P.S. Did you definitely gave up on Glee, T LO?

  • Love it – IN!

  • Love it!

  • Love it. Adorable. IN.

  • NCDFan

cute dress, cute hair, cute shoes.

  • StrandedFashionista

    IN. Charming.

  • oatmealpie

Totally cute. 21st century Audrey Hepburn.

  • NurseEllen

IN, absolutely.  She looks darling.  Very French!

  • IN!! Love it! Lace done well is oh so right!!

  • TheLaurenJean

    In! SO SO CUTE!

  • LesYeuxHiboux

No problems with black lace, but I hate high necks with cap sleeves: it always looks like the wearer has their head on backward. Awkward. OUT

    • mountainFashionista

Funny and true, and now I can’t unsee it!

  • Soo IN. Very cute. Belt is a really nice touch.

  • Vaniljekjeks

    In.  Love!!!!!!!

  • Mexxoo

    Totally IN!

  • TAGinMO

I’m completely with TLo on this one. Stunning. And legs for DAYS.

Girl, I know nothing about you other than what I’ve learned from the (funny!) ABC promos for your new show, but that is SO your dress it’s ridiculous.

  • If it weren’t for the duckface in the second photo, this would be a WERQ for me.  In.

  • erinbinek

She’s perfect.  Deserves a WERQ, I would say.

  • IN! Her style transcends the dress.

  • In. Those shoes are so fun! They totally make the look.

  • IN, OMG, IN, I want to steal that look so badly! If only I had somewhere to go where I needed to be that fabulous.

  • brokephilosopher

    1. IN.  2. do you guys get drunk and toss around ideas for what the “out” should say? always fabulous!

  • karena10

In.  Very cute and suits her perfectly.

  • J’adore! IN!

  • AnaRoW

I’m going to give it an OUT mainly because it looks as if her head is on backwards.

    • bellafigura1

I have no idea what this means but it made me spit laugh on my keyboard. And I gotta agree, that’s a darned good reason for an OUT.

  • Louise Bryan

Oh well, I guess I’m swimming upstream again.  I don’t care for this.  I think the dress is too short, too twee, too something, but it doesn’t really look right on her.  OUT.

  • Sara__B

    IN. Utterly and completely.

  • in In IN!

  • nannypoo

I hate lace in any color unless it’s on my grandmother’s furniture, but this look is adorable from head to toe. Fabulous.

  • benjamin478

    absolutely an IN!

  • j_anson

    Definitely IN.

  • IN. Definitely.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

i think it might be cos it’s an interesting shape over an interesting lining & illusion netting is nowhere involved. cos, yeah, yr right, this is very good.

  • AlexisPayne

    Love! IN!!!!

  • Joyce VG

The Duchess of Cambridge would look so beautiful in this.  She looks good too. IN.

  • marilyn

In, BUT:  I hate when anything matches the lipstick, other than nail polish.  Matching her shoes and lips is weird.  It all looks perfect, but I am bored with the new black lace look already.  She gets an IN, because she looks great.  My boredom with the lips/shoes, and black lace things is personal at this point.

  • sweetestsith

In! I adore the reds (which I will pretend were light & dark shades of the same tone in person) with the pretty pretty dress. The belt is a lovely texture contrast, and I want her hair. And her face. Pretty-pretty.

  • msftmargarita

    In. Love the hair.

  • formerlyAnon

Out. She looks like she got stranded at the home of her much shorter cousin and had to wear said cousin’s dress. Did I mention the cousin is 14 and this is as close to a daring cocktail frock her mom would let her buy with her babysitting money and she’s really pissed about the lack of cleavage?

  • EditKitten

  • harleydear

  • rawrgrowlrawr

    IN. I need this dress.

  • greyhoundgirl

Adorable!  Appropriate for her!  Fits her well!  In!

  • Wonderful! Love it all. IN.

  • enchanted216

IN, forgiving the ill fitting shoes and the eye makeup.

  • IN!  LOVE IT!  (and DVRing her show tonight; fun to see bad girls in action)

  • TheOtherChristina

Confidential to fellow PUFs below: the shoe and lip coordinate but most certainly do not match.

  • She looks super-cute – ladylike and sassy all at once. IN for sure.
Also, I’m really glad this chick has her own show now, because she’s been turning up in small roles and doing fantastic work for years. I hope it’s good.

  • GTrain

    Love. IN

  • It’s a *really* cute look!

(But I still refuse to watch her show, since it looks like it’ll be really dumb.)

  • The cap sleeves . . .  they’re like little nightmares.  Every thing reads “sexy confident woman” until your eye is irresistibly drawn to the cap sleeves which are screaming “I’m a six year old pretty princess”

  • FayeKat

I like would prefer a different pair of red shoes, but she looks too cute to be anything but IN.

  • bellafigura1

    Way way in.

  • IN. And YUM.

  • luciaphile

A little twee and I’m not loving the hair, but it’s a nice look. In.

  • In, In, IN!

  • Aly Light

  • PaulaBerman

Oh, how I wish that dress did not have cap sleeves, as those push it from cute frock to matador’s mistress for me.  Imagine how cute it would be sleeveless! The hair isn’t helping either.

  • TieDye64

IN. Like you guys I normally loathe lace frocks, but this is really cute. It suits her. She was so good on Breaking Bad.

  • OUT!!!  This is the first time I’ve disagreed with you guys.  I’m embarrassed you like this, not only like it, but are raving over it!  It doesn’t even look like it fits her, she looks she is wearing doll clothes, short at the legs and scrunched at the neck. And the colors all clash!!!  I know black and red and beige are all the rage, but for some reason this is not working for me.  OUT, OUT, OUT.

  • CatherineRhodes

  • LOVE it. IN IN IN (I’ve always thought y’all have been a smidge mean to black lace dresses) BUT… I wish she would have done a different bright for the shoe. I do think the black patent belt is genius. And her hair is so cute. As pale girl with black hair and short bangs though, I am probably biased. oh well.

  • CQAussie

IN, love the dress but must say I hate those shoes with it!

  • In!  she looks positively gorgeous.  i even like the berry/red lip color, which is so often a bit of cliche with those blunt bangs.  she looks so lovely.

  • butterflysunita

IN.  I hate the dress but she looks so stunning in it that how can she be anything but In?

  • Judih1

Out -Cute dress she looks looks twee from the neck down and sophisticated from the neck up. Disconnected look. And I HATE the red shoes.

  • nancymae

    Adorable. IN.

  • MissAnnieRN

Yay – serving up Audrey Hepburn via the 21st century and doing it soo much better than AudreyBot.

  • PeaceBang

Not only am I super happy about this outfit, I love that the word BITCH finally made it into a movie title. Progress, ladies! IN!

  • clubgoingseel

    uber cute! a definite in!

  • In

  • momogus

    In – love everything.

  • elzatelzabelz

In- Super cute and sassy. It’s the red shoes, perfect length, and even the neckline (which I normally hate). Cute.

  • LambeeBaby

IN. Not everyone can do it but the length, hair and shoes are making it look current. What she is carrying in her right hand?

  • quiltrx

IN!  Love the dress, and the shoes hit just the right note.

  • butter nut

IN.  love the dress, love her, love the dress on her.  but i don’t care for the choice of the shoes.  i don’t mind a red shoe, but i don’t think these are the right ones.

  • LOVE her, love her look. I’m looking for a Zooey Deschanel upgrade and she fits the bill. A bit of cute, none of twee, ladylike instead of babydoll, a touch of sophisticated instead of messy-bouffant-ed, adorable and yet looks her age.

  • amber_julene

    Killer. Sophisticated & adorable. In.

  • IN. But I like black lace and always have so I don’t really get the question, here.

  • Kirsten Henry

  • lrhoff

Love this — it’s okay, boys.  Sometimes curve balls are thrown, and you are allowed to change your minds!!

  • lesmaha

  • fiestyfashionfem

As my Granny would say, she is all piss and vinegar. Which is fabulous!

  • allj

Definitely in! Also, I love the previews of her new show. Adorable.

  • Kathleen B

IN but I don’t even hate black lace

  • Oh. I love it. IN!

  • demidaemon

    IN. Adorable!

  • aristida_girl

    IN love it

  • IN!

  • fashionablylate

    Huge IN, love it!

  • ChristySchiff

OUT.  I hate the high neck.  Have never minded lace dresses though, and the belt with the skirt on this dress is terrific.  Just hate the neck.

(OMG, how cute would this have been with a boatneck?)

  • Thathoodwink

  • asympt

I don’t mind lace but I’m clearly the only person here who’s bugged by the wrinkling in the lining.  Out.

  • Tina Tian

    IN! Definitely. Really cute look.

  • Truly_Outrageous

I cant help it. I love lace. And I love this dress. IN!

  • IN. Super cute.

  • DCSheehan

Out. This trend needs to go away. Permanently. Olde time hookers and grieving Itslian widows may continue to wear black lace. Everyone else must cease.

  • Larkin21

    Love! IN 🙂

  • Love. IN.

  • allisankelly

Adorable. I will never tire of the black lace dress. The red shoes were a great idea here. I love this actress and I am glad she’s got a lot going on right now and wish her the best.

  • Jecca2244

    I need this.

  • Sunshine16

In – perfect dress, shoes & lipstick combo!

  • In- she’s fabulous!

  • iCouture

She looks like Christina Hendricks, Rooney Mara, and  Anne Hathaway had a love child.
    on a side note….

  • fashionzombie

IN. And I personally consider it a WERQ.

  • guest2visits

It’s cute but….. maybe too cute.  She’s a very pretty, long and lean girl. If the skirt of the dress had some added length,
and you subtracted the collar to expose her neck; this would make the dress less childish, – more graceful, elegant.
Right now; it appears like she’s wearing a younger, shorter person’s frock.

  • nancy

The dress is adorable. I would have liked a different neckline (I feel choked just looking at it, but that is probably just me). But definitely an IN. I’m ignoring the shoes.

  • IN! I like her so very much 🙂

  • up with pod people

    Mega in!

  • Super cute. In. Haven’t watched her show yet but have enjoyed her as the snarky best friend in rom coms for the last few years. Hope her show is funny!

  • IN

  • Renaissance_Man_ATL

This is beyond IN!  It’s a WERQ!!!

  • Bitch. Face. Hall of Fame. That means IN!

  • librarygrrl64

Not crazy about the shoe color, but a big IN otherwise.

  • littlemac8

Am I dating myself by saying she looks darling?!  IN

  • Sophie Collier

It’s not teeny tiny black lace, so it works.  It looks more like a floral print than a cheesy lace dress. IN.

  • Susan Crawford

Yes, yes, it is a cute dress – which could be just a couple of inches longer for a little more sophistication, IMHO.

And please, as Moira Shearer pleaded, “Take . . . off . . . the red shoes.”

  • SatelliteAlice

    In!  A thousand times IN!

  • Truthiness2U

I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to look at the actress and not think “well, your trellis is a whore” from Veronica Mars, but vainly trying to put aside Gia Goodman for me…love the look. I think it’s a WERQ, and well done on all counts. Nice pop of colour with the shoes. The patent leather of the belt, breaks up the lace, and I think adds a bit of an edge or counterpoint to the lace. And her hair and make-up look great.

I think a good look is when I see someone, and wish I could look like that. Many many times I don’t feel that way with celebs. This is one of those times I wish I could look like this person/pull off this look as well as she does.

  • IN IN IN!

  • EEKstl

IN all the way.  Unlike TLO, I LOVE me a good black lace dress and IMO a good one is NEVER over.  And this is a good one.  The red shoes are cute but red with the black IS something I’m over – I would have preferred a pop of royal blue, but I quibble.

  • Love IN it.

  • Grace Ritt

Definitely IN! She makes it look new.
