In or Out: Kerry Washington in Altuzarra

Posted on April 05, 2012

Is anyone planning to watch that Scandal show? It sort of looks like fun, except we have a tendency to run screaming from anything that has the words “from the creator of Grey’s Anatomy” tagged to it.

But at least with the show getting an initial publicity push right now, we can expect to see more of Kerry poledancing for it on the red carpet.

Kerry Washington attends “Welcome to ShondaLand: An Evening with Shonda Rhimes & Friends” in Hollywood in an Altuzarra dress.

Altuzarra Spring 2012 Collection/Model: Daria Strokous

We don’t know, you guys. That dress is super-adorable but white pumps take it to banquet-hall waitress territory. We love that the dress doesn’t have those goofy side panels like the runway version. It fits her well and her butt looks fabulous. But a black dress with white shoes? That just screams “service worker.”  Are we being too strict here? We love white pumps with the right outfit, but we really can’t sign off on pairing them with an LBD.

Vote Now!

IN! The white pumps are a BRILLIANT choice!

OUT! To paraphrase Joan Crawford, “NO WHITE PUMPS — EVER!

The minions could not sign off on the illusion netting and side boob in Brooklyn Decker’s dress, voting it OUT.

In. It does scream ‘service industry’ but I think those are what I would personally pair with the dress too, because of the white peekaboo thing on the hem.

Please don’t revoke my Bitter Kitten status.

I agree, although a color would have been nice too. She’s just so cute. IN

        Ditto, In!

    • nancymae

IN. Love the dress, like that she tried something different with the shoe and feeling extra tolerant about the hair.

    • SpillinTea

I live for her, so shes an automatic in. Classy and talented and FIERCE without trying to hard.

    • sagecreek

IN, although I join you in deploring the white shoes.

    • understateddiva

I expect she looks really cute in person, but this outfit looks dull in a photo.  A bright lip would have been nice!  A grudging in.

    • TheOriginalLulu

White shoes always look a little cheap to my eyes. Can’t help it.
      The dress is cute, though.

    • nancymae

As for the show, the premise sounds good and Shonda Rhimes brought Christina Yang into my world so I am. Forever in her debt. That said, Kerry’s character scares me a little. Is she ever NOT yelling or “speaking with intense quiet determination” in the promos?

    • janetjb

Losing the belt was a good idea.
I like the white pumps….I can’t believe I said that.

      In.

    • DeborahLipp

IN. I neither love nor hate the white pumps, but they don’t detract from the general awesome.

I won’t be caught dead watching Scandal. I loved Grey’s for 3 years and watched for another 4, but Shonda Rimes has violated my sensibilities for the last time.

      • http://profiles.google.com/ameliaheartsu Amelia Logan

Greys anatomy has gone from good show to guilty pleasure for me.

        • DeborahLipp

For me it went from good show to guilty pleasure to HOW DARE YOU AFFRONT ME THIS WAY? The musical was the last straw.

          • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

I admit, I started watching last season, so it hasn’t seemed to degrade
in quality at all to me. it has always been a guilty pleasure.   (I loved the musical.)

    • http://twitter.com/amywatts Amy Watts

I would’ve preferred them in a bright color, but white, if she’s going pump, is preferable to black with this dress.

      • http://twitter.com/amywatts Amy Watts

         Wait, I forgot to vote!
        IN!

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Liz-Norris/26609454 Liz Norris

Exactly. If she’s going to pick one of the three boring choices (black, white, or silly putty), then white is definitely the least of three evils.

        • http://twitter.com/GaraStJames Gara St. James

Yeah, I agree, white was a more inspired choice. The style of the shoes themselves aren’t the best likely choice, but I think choosing white was a more interesting choice. Overall, I think she looks pulled together and classy. In.

    • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

She’s saved by the dress – it’s super cute! But the accessories are blah, and she could have done more. How about a red wedge, and a straw clutch, for example?

    • Lori

I think it’s an In because she looks so good in it, but it would have been better with different shoes.

As for the show, I’ll pass. “From the creator of Grey’s Anatomy” is pretty much an auto-no. “From the creator of Grey’s Anatomy, a show about someone getting paid hella money to help rich people get away with shit” is pretty close to run screaming territory for me. Which is too bad because I usually like Kerry Washington.

    • blixtme

IN. I think it’s fresh and summery. Well, spring-y. An open toe/more strappy white shoe would’ve bumped this up for me.

    • Hilary Treat

I think it’s a smidge too small and I like that she got rid of the collar, but she should have added a necklace. The whole thing is boring.  Out

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1344922354 Eric Scheirer Stott

It’s a little tight on her. If she was a waitress I’d say “You GO Girl!” but it’s kinda dead for a red carpet look.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=617249824 Dawn Sinclair

      Out due to monumental dullness.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.parker Sara Parker

I like the shoes! I think she’s IN.

    • Call me Bee

The white pumps are perfect with this particular LBD because of the hem treatment.  I say adorable and IN!

    • http://wipgirl.wordpress.com/ Kristel

IN. She looks lovely, and she was smart to stay away from that god-awful belt.

    • http://twitter.com/almcafee Alison McAfee

the side panels were what made the dress interesting, it’s just ‘meh’ now. white pumps look cheap, wear something crazy, it’s just a LBD!

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

If I had been her stylist I would have paired some killer lipstick red shoes with that.  Sooooooo glad they ditched the ridiculous belt the runway version is shown with. She gets an in, cause she looks great, otherwise.

    • kimmeister

Total IN.  Only wish she had picked a clutch with color, and that her bangs weren’t opening up like curtains.

    • lizajane1776

In. She looks great, and at least it isn’t a nude shoe.
But I think the white version would have been more fun.

    • howdoilook

Total IN for me! I kind of liked the unexpected white shoe. It’s not like they’re crocks or clogs or Keds.

      • Ms_Flyover

White keds only exist in stores.  No ked that has ever been worn is still white.  (I love keds, btw.  My target version in cobalt blue will likely be my staple shoe this summer.)

    • Laurie Bergman

In…the white shoe works for me here, especially since it picks up the gingko leaf shape in the hem and appears to have a dull metallic heel/platform.  I agree with others who are calling for a more colorful clutch, though.

      • poggi

Good catch.  I didn’t notice the metallic at first.  I may actually like these shoes with the dress.

    • NurseEllen

I have to say IN on this, the white shoes were unexpected and fun, and I like how they echo the white at the hem of the dress.  Totally agree that leaving out the side panels was a great choice.  She looks very cute–kicking up her heel probably felt quite natural in that outfit!

    • http://heartprintandstyle.blogspot.com Vivi N

      IN

    • Cathy S

In. The shoes would look weird if the dress didn’t have the white in the hem, but I think they look great.

    • uprightcitizen

I had a very stylish co-worker explain to me (being a guy, I didn’t know this) that white pumps were for strippers and stripper poles, and would always look like you bought your shoes at Frederick’s of Hollywood or Payless. “What about with a summer sun dress?” I asked. (“White sandals are fine.”) “A white suit?” (“Bone or taupe pumps.”) “What about white flats?” (“They’re okay. It’s only the pump that’s tacky.”) I think there was a special dispensation for weddings, but then the shoes are usually satin or jeweled or something … not white leather … or faux leather … pumps.

After that, I started to notice that I never saw really well-dressed women of taste wear white pumps. They always opted for something else. And the white pumps I did see looked cheap, and made the wearer look either slutty, like an old woman, or just really unsophisticated. Then there’s Kathleen Turner going homicidal on Patty Hurst for wearing them over and over again after Labor Day (if you need another reason not to wear them).

      • ballerinawithagun

I own other white shoes but never pumps!

    • Patricia Gillett

IN. The shoes don’t bother me because no service worker would wear a heel like that on a six- to eight- hour shift. Her figure is fierce and the dress shows it off.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=558631967 Ivona Foster

IN the shoes work for me

    • Athenrein

In. The white shoes are SO much better than putty ones, and black ones would have been business-y. But it definitely needs a colorful clutch and in my opinion some colorful jewelry.

    • Funkykatt

I’ll watch anything you watch, just to read your reviews.

    • Ms_Flyover

IN.  Service workers wear white nursing shoes, not 6″ heels.

    • PeaceBang

OUT. Right off the bus from Cleveland, as my mother would say.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

In, but I’m mourning the lack of some fun colored shoes.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

IN, but I wished she’da done the white version with the colored panels on the skirt with some red shoes.  I’m a red shoe whore, what can I say.

      • sleah_in_norcal

red pumps would have been cute with the black and white too.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/DNWEFT2SVBX5T3NPMROQCT4U2U jennyv

      OUT!

    • Sunshine16

I guess it’s an In.  I think she was trying to make it look more springy that if she’d paired it with black shoes.  I do think she could have kicked it up a notch or two with the accessorizing though, and not just the shoes!

    • crash1212

I love the dress. But this overall look is an OUT for me. I could overlook the hair altogether if she’d chosen anything other than a white (or nude) shoe. This look is in dire need of a color pop. And not much in this world is in need of white pumps.

    • IAmJ

God, I hate the shoes, but I like the dress too much on her to give it an out. So an IN from me it is.

    • CharCrop

OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! White shoes need to be BANNED! They”re all that I see!

    • Rand Ortega

Pink or Yellow (pumps or slingback) would’ve been soooo chic! & I like the original design better, but KW is just gorgeous, so I give her an IN.
Considering how few women of color have leads on TV, I’m definitely tuning into “Scandal”. Plus the lady KW’s character is based on is amazing!

    • http://theargiehome.blogspot.com/ Gus Casals

OUT.  Team No White Pumps EVER

    • butterflysunita

IN.  I think she looks great.

    • AthenaJ

I say lowercase in because she looks great and I love the bottom of the dress, but those shoes just aren’t quite right. They seem to be a toned down pearl-white while the white detailing in the dress is bright white… so for me, it’s throwing the look off. Also, the dress needs (maybe) a belt, a more interesting clutch, and some jewelry to be a full in-caps IN.

    • http://profiles.google.com/grandiva1968 e jerry powell

      The shoes kill it.

The skirt looked really wrong at first glance, but it grew on me after I saw the runway version.

      I adore Kerry Washington.

It makes me sad that she’s tied to Shonda Rhimes now.

    • up with pod people

In. I don’t even know, I lose the ability to think around her and just start solemnly applauding.

    • cgoodsil

A pop of color would have been nice – blue, maybe? – but she looks fantastic regardless. IN, I say.

    • piecesofconfetti

      IN, I don’t mind it.

    • Sara__B

Kerry Washington is, as SpillinTea said, “Classy and talented and fierce without trying too hard”, and the dress is adorable, but the details are wrong. Hair and makeup — blah for an evening event. Accessories — nearly invisible. White pumps — 100% awful. OUT.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=561903133 Sage Andersen

in.  she’s adorable.  and everything else is right…hair, makeup, even the shape of the shoe.

OUT!  I’m with Joan. To boot, while she looks really good in most respects here she is sorely lacking some visual interest above the hem. A belt or necklace (one, not both) would have helped. Sooo close, but my OUT stands.

    • Eva_baby

    • Ennovi_R

IN- although I would NEVER wear white pumps.

    • CatherineRhodes

IN. For some reason the stark simplicity is working for me.

Yeah, I’m going to watch the first episode of “Scandal” and see if it grabs. I too run screaming from anything associated with “Grey’s Anatomy.” I’m hoping this is more in the “Homeland” or “West Wing” political drama vein. We’ll see.

      IN!

    • Thathoodwink

I guess the pumps are boring…but I love the dress, in black and in white with the goofy side panels and all. I think her bag color is wrong. But she is just so beautiful that she gets point for that alone.

    • mjude

IN but do white shoes ever look good?

    • MilaXX

IN, the pumps keep the outfit Springy.

I plan to watch even though I have a bit of a LOVE-HATE affair with Shonda Rimes. On the one hand she assembles really great multicultural cast, but I usually end up getting mad at how stupid the scripts are. Still she’s head and shoulders above Tyler Perry’s creations so I plan to watch for as long as I can tolerate it.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Iknowright.  I loved Grey’s Anatomy for the first 2 seasons.  After that, I just couldn’t take it anymore.

        • MilaXX

I lasted longer than that. I watched faithfully until last season. I just didn’t care enough to fit it into my viewing schedule. So I’ve only missed 2 seasons.

Private Practice only made it 2 seasons.

    • GTrain

I’ll pretend those aren’t the shoes she wore and say IN

    • Caaro3

      She looks amazingly cute.  IN

    • elizonthelam

I like the idea of white pumps, but i think if they had been pointy toe they would have been better. Still, in.

    • VioletFem

IN. Would have preferred more colorful shoes, but she still looks good.

    • Judy_J

Cute dress and it fits well.  We’re getting off work early today and I’m feeling generous, so I’ll give her an IN despite the white pumps.

    • PeggyOC

In.  The pumps are a little twee, but they still work, and the whole thing is fierce.

    • BazoDee

OUT -the pumps bring a mediocre dress down.

I wish she would have worn the white version with a turquoise shoe. That would have been KILLA.

As it is though, I don’t hate the shoes. IN.

Her face needs more color and it’s too tight across her midsection. Out.

    • chitowndg

In – the white pumps work here.  Appropriate for the occasion; plus, service workers do not wear heels that high.

IN… the white shoes are an unfortunate choice… but otherwise, it’s such a cool dress, that it overrides the shoes.  How fabulous would a deep deep fuschia pair have been… almost purple, but not quite!

    • demidaemon

I find this all kind of “enh.” I think the white pumps were a kicky choice, but the makeup and hair seem lacking. A grudging OUT.

IN – I think she looks great. I’d like a coloured lip though.

    • Spicytomato1

The pros — cute shape (both the dress and Kerry), decent accessorizing and fresh makeup — outweigh the cons — white shoes, lackluster hair. In.

    • ThaliaMenninger

The dress is cute enough to make me ignore the nurse shoes.

    • DCSheehan

In. She’s gorge, despite the shoes.

    • TheLaurenJean

      Nope. Definite out.

    • Sophie Collier

Nope, the shoes are okay, fellas.  But only on a lady of color.  They’d look clownish on pale legs.  This woman looks flawless.

    • http://twitter.com/ShelfAfterlife Shelf Afterlife

I give her an IN because I think she looks great and they’re not yawn-tastic nude pumps.  And I love Grey’s Anatomy so I’ll probably give this a shot.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

do not like the shoes. here, there & everywhere.

      also:
yeah, the side panels are silly but they make the dress. w/o em you just have a black dress w/ an ittybitty bit of interest at the bottom, not enough, really, even to mention. maybe if they were multicolor like they are on the model, then theyd be something. but here the whole thing just looks like it was bought at buffum’s circa, i dunno, maybe 1985.

    • sashaychante

IN  I think she looks really cute here.  I am not a fan of white pumps at all, but I kinda like them with this dress.  Scandal has been talked up a lot (what TV show hasn’t), and I think I have to give it a fair shot, so I’ll be watching.  Hopefully it will not disappoint.  Besides Mad Men, I have no TV to take me away from reality this spring.

    • marilyn

I don’t like the shoes, but do not know how to replace them.  Being black, the strappy sandal look would not work.  Black pumps would make the whole thing dowdy.  Maybe this is the situation fro some of those loud contrasting shoes that fight the dress for attention.  So, if you are rating the shoes, OUT.  If you are rating the dress, IN.

    • LambeeBaby

Meh. Not loving the dress or the shoes. Her body is fantastic, but the dress is just average.

    • Candigirl1968

      No no nooooooooo!

    • jw_ny

      OUT

It’s just so boring/uninspired!  How the hell did she make that kicky little dress so dull looking!?  A few well chosen accessories could have helped…a belt, bangles, necklace…maybe some color?!  ;)

Also…I’m not a fan of white shoes in the first place…so I may be a bit biased.

    • MzzPants

OUT.  White shoes.  Dancing penguin hem.

    • cluecat

IN.  THose pumps would be really cute if they weren’t white.

I would never patronize establishments who require their staff to work in heels.  I remember what an eight hour shift did to my feet in flats, I can’t imagine the swelling and pain of serving in stilletos.

    • formerlyAnon

IN. Emphatically.  But perhaps that’s just my tendency to revert to the “matchy matchy,” because I think they’d work even better if she’d worn a necklace (ETA: or earrings – but not both) that incorporated some white.

Also, maybe, because I just heard her interviewed on NPR and she made an incredibly good impression. (SEE Vanity Fair? She can do other things besides lounge in underwear. Actual INTERESTING things.)

    • Susan Walker

At the very least a spectator type B&W show.  But I feel there are very, very few times white shoes look right.  LOVE the dress so much I’ll give her an IN.

I know you are not GA fans, but I am and the promos for Scandal do not interest me at all.

    • poketom

is she wearing SPF makeup!? ughh.

    • http://twitter.com/Merneith Merneith

OUT. I’m theoretically on-board with the idea of white pumps, but all this here is just dreary.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Don’t like the bangs. The dress is too tight. I would never consider white pumps. Yet, IN. The Power of the Kerry W. She can make nearly anything look good.

Didn’t Kathleen Turner kill Patty Hearst in Serial Mom for wearing white pumps? Can’t remember if it was the crime of ‘pre-Memorial Day’ or ‘post-Labor Day.’

    • PantherontheRunway

She needed that cute little belt and it would go from 9/10 to 10/10

    • AWStevens

She should have worn hot red pumps and the dress is uber boring.  OUT

    • Bozhi

I never would have guessed this was a red carpet look.  The shoe and hair choices are wrong, and the dress is dull. I wouldn’t wear that dress out to lunch, much less on the red carpet.   Out.

    • Louise Bryan

Out.  The look is dull somehow, and while the pumps are not sensible, and most wait staff wear black shoes, I am picking up a sort of Nancy-nurse vibe.  Maybe some color would’ve helped, or some jewelry.

    • Ezmartin

Please…rules are meant to be broken sometimes and Kerry is WORQING this!

    • ccm800

IN. However Kerry always looks like she has about  a pound of crazy just behind each eye.

    • http://katelorenzdesign.com Kate Lorenz

She is working the hell out of that dress, but it can’t make up for that tacky twee flamanco hem or the cheap-looking shoes.  Out.

    • fashionablylate

The white pumps are ok, but what struck me immediately was how freakin’ tight this is on her. And even I know to suck in my stomach when posing for a side view. OUT.

    • http://twitter.com/Eovaai Eovaai

IN.  The shoes work in this instance, in my opinion.   Cute look.

Mediocre IN. It’s not really fabulous, but it’s not offensive.
As far as the show is concerned, I’m with you guys. It looks like it may have a wee bit of potential, but the Grey’s Anatomy connection scares me away. ETA: I did get to watch part of it tonight and it just didn’t hold my attention. Not impressed.

A little brighter make up and different hair would also have been preferable. OUT

      OUT! I agree with Joan.

She’s cute – but I’d have like to see her face with a bit more color/makeup.  Meh – an in, but barely.

In.  But I think the dress is too tight.

IN. She looks great! I’ll give her a pass on the white pumps. It’s a great look. Haven’t seen the show, yet, though.

IN! I love all of this!

Uh, I can’t get behind the shoes but the dress looks so great on her, I will ignore the shoes and give her an IN

Out.  One of my only fashion rules that cannot be broken.

In – I think the shoes are sort of fun with it.  I watched the show last night and thought it was decent so far. We’ll see how it goes.

I’ll give it an IN.  She looks pretty fab, shoes aside.

In.  Those are some pretty cute white pumps, altho black or another color would have been better.  She looks great, otherwise!

Nope, shoes are fine, saves the dress from it’s preciousness. Cute! In! Don’t like the bangs, though.

      White Shoes!  OUT!

The white pumps killed it for me. It was a scroll down disappointment. OUT.

IN. The touches of white in the dress make the pumps work. However, I think Kerri Washington is literally the most beautiful woman on the planet, so I’m very biased.

      Out.
Even with the plaids panel belt, the runway version looks sassier and funnier.
She looks good in this black dress but she looks so plain and monochromatic.
Girl, you actually have to put some efforts in it.

      I think it’s super cute – IN.
