In or Out: Emily Blunt in Elie Saab

Posted on April 09, 2012

Good morning, Ems! Aren’t you just a little ray of sunshine?

Emily Blunt attends the ELIE SAAB private dinner in NYC in a yellow cocktail dress with pleat detail from the Spring 2012 Elie Saab Collection paired with Sergio Rossi Sandals. Clutch by Elie Saab.

Sergio Rossi Ophidia Embellished Sandal

And now, the criticism.

Super cute dress, but who thought it was a good idea to sport such red nails and lips? Wouldn’t have been our suggestion. Looks too harsh and clash-y. Softer colors all around would have brought this to spring. And those shoes are pretty fabulous, but we’re of course opposed to them for being entirely too Barbie-outfit matchy. It’s a cute look, but we’re not pleased with the detailing.

We have a feeling the kittens are feisty today and will disagree with us on this one. So let’s hear it, bitches.

Vote Now!

IN! Sassy and springtime!

OUT! Mrs. Ronald McDonald!

The kittens agreed with us that Dakota Fanning’s getup was oddly matched, but voted it IN just barely.

People with her skin tone and hair color don’t look good in yellow.  Out.

      • VioletFem

I can see your point about the skin color, but hair color? If anything, I think dark haired people can pull off bright colors quite well.

        • lilibetp

Yes, if they also have dark skin.  Emily’s skin is very fair, so this is too strong for her.  If the lipstick and nails were pink and the shade of yellow was more butter than egg-yolk, this would be quite nice.

      • TheOriginalLulu

That might be the reason the red lipstick was chosen.

      • Lilak

Nothing with a mustard tone, that’s for sure — but a nice chrome would have looked just fine.

    • http://twitter.com/The_Bugler Anna Daugherty

      She looks stunning.

      • JosephLamour

I agree. I would have maybe gone to pink or maroon for the lip and nails, but I still think she looks fantastic, yellow being some sort of white people taboo or not, so IN. At least she’s not wearing any beige, people.

        • http://profiles.google.com/ameliaheartsu Amelia Logan

I think I would like coral on the lips better than pink and maroon.

      • EveEve

        IN!

    • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

Someone needed to steam the skirt before going in front of the cameras.  Also, I’m not sure that’s her yellow — could be the lips and nails that skew it, but I think she’d be flattered by a softer, less mustard-y yellow.  Preferably one that had been pressed.  OUT.

      • julnyes

Yes, I don’t think that she can’t wear yellows, but that this one isn’t right for her. OUT on the shade of yellow and the details. I have to say I do love the dress (just not on her) and those shoes are super cute.

    • Corey Ferguson

      Ketchup and mustard.

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

         PERFECT!!!!!

      • ballerinawithagun

        Exactly!

      • michael podell

ugh I thought I was the first u___u
        story of my life tbh

    • http://twitter.com/amywatts Amy Watts

I don’t like the color of the dress, but I’m so, so, so tired of
      1. nude lips
      2. platform shoes
      3. peeptoe pumps
      4. nude shoes

that her avoiding all these things makes it an IN for me.

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

IN – same concerns about lip and nails but I love the dress and matchy shoes!

    • CharCrop

Calm down uncles! IN…just because it’s Easter Monday!

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

I disagree with both the lip/nail color, and the dress color.  I think neither of them are doing her any favors whatever.  Intense yellow is rarely the friend of lighter skinned people. I do however like the silhouette. I’m voting Out.

    • M N

OUT.  The dress is adorable, but the head is too severe.  And if you’re going for matchy shoes, at least match the yellows.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=811053804 Stacy Parker Cole

      IN

    • VioletFem

IN. Cute, I don’t mind the red so much, would have preferred a different pair of shoes to go with this dress (although they are super cute). She still looks good though.

    • vanjar

I like the dress and I also like the red on the lips and nails. Her toes look weird in those shoes though.  In.

    • TieDye64

OUT. That is definitely not her color, though I like the dress in general. I agree with you about the lip color as it’s just making it worse.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Emily-Smith/12431153 Emily Smith

In I like it!  I could also never ever wear those colors #gingerproblems

    • TheOriginalLulu

Maybe I need another cup of coffee, but I’m really digging this look on her. I feel like the red lips and nails, plus the matchy, sparkly ankle straps are giving it a retro feel that’s really working for me.
Maybe I would hate it on the wrong girl, but she’s definitely the right girl. IN

      • Lizzyisi

I agree completely. I like the red nails and lips with this dress and the shoes might match, but the sequins break that up. Plus they are a nice link to that bag! Skirt seems a little rumpled, but this is a total In.

      • Alisa Rivera

First thing I thought when I saw the photo was, oh, she’s doing a Dita Von Teese shoutout. And that makes it an IN for me, even though I am also not loving the lipstick.

        • littlemac8

IN – I like everything but the lip color and the too severe hair but otherwise it’s a nice sunshiny morning!

    • Sunshine16

It’s a total IN, she looks fab!

    • nannypoo

The lipstick is awful and she needs some blusher. I like the dress for someone else, but it’s not a good choice for her. Come to think of it, I don’t even like her hair.

    • carolynmo

Sorry, guys. I think she looks wonderful. In!

    • http://theargiehome.blogspot.com/ Gus Casals

Mmmm, too many things to consider rather than a simple IN or OUT. I like the shoes, and I have no problem with the matchy effect. It’s a difficult dress to pull off, and the shoes help easing it out.
Hair is too severe, red lip does not help. And she could crack a more sincere smile, right? The rictus in the first pic does not help.
In all, although I like dress, shoes and Emily, it’s an OUT.

    • Kristy Evans

With the shoes, it looks like a costume. And the lipstick takes it into Off-Off Broadway musical territory. Love ya, Ems, but you are OUT.

    • LittleKarnak

Just saw “Salmon Fishing In The Yemen” so she gets a carryover IN from me!

    • DominoEstella

RED LIPSTICK IS ALMOST ALWAYS AWESOME.  This look is perfection.   You guys need to get the stick out of your butt and stop criticizing red lipstick.  It’s very classic and I am so tired of these over glossed, goopy, skin colored lips.

    • http://twitter.com/mcglory13 mcglory13

I love mustard with red lips. See: Michelle Williams at the Oscars, Kirsten Dunst in France (?) at the Melancholia premiere. I say in.

    • Mary Catherine Roberts

      Fierce as shit. In.

    • MoHub

I have a problem with both the nails and lips and the hair as well. A fun, kicky little dress wants fun, kicky styling.

    • CPK1

do not like the lips and nail, at all. And the shoes take it into upscale bridesmaid territory. But the dress is fresh and pretty as is she.

    • SewingSiren

Yellow can be difficult. She looks great. IN.

    • ballerinawithagun

Out for total effect but I love the dress and shoes.

    • Little_Olive

Yes, taking it to a What’s-Her-name-Barbie’s-Brunette-Friend degree. I’m not on board.

Anyway, I’m more concerned about what those shoes are doing to her big toes. They are practically facing 14:45!

      • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

You must mean, Midge.  At least that was Barbie’s brunette friend in the 50’s and 60’s  My big toes do that too, but then, I have massive bunions.

        • Little_Olive

Thanks! I wonder if Midge is still around. It seems such a babyboomer name!! Wasn’t there a Skipper too? As for the bunions… well Kiltd I hope you are not making them worse by wearing toe-bunching sandals! ;)

          • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Totally a Boomer name, no one is named that anymore.  Skipper was Barbie’s kid sister. I dunno if she is still around either.
Any PUFs who have the scoop on Midge and Skipper?

I never wear sandals, they look like hell with a kilt.  lol

          • kimmeister

As a child, I dreamed of having a Peaches-and-cream Barbie.  Imagine my dismay when, one year, my dad got me a Skipper.  Pfffft.

            • Little_Olive

And tell you “but honey, this is the one you wanted, or at least they look the same!!” Oh, frustration.

    • janetjb

The colors are too strong, she’d probably look better in a softer yellow and a softer red.

      Out.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BMEASIKJSVE6YP3DE2VLJA5CUU JulieJ

I actually like the lip and nail color…IN!

    • butterflysunita

IN.  Such a pleasure to see bright colors instead of the sea of neutrals.  Especially in spring.  I think she looks lovely.

    • tired_mommy

In–overall she looks beautiful and the missed details don’t ruin the total effect for me.

    • lizajane1776

IN! She looks great. And say what you will, but Barbie has style!
<–ducks quickly to avoid the shoe that is being thrown.

    • Christina Brennan

I like the high contrast lips and nails.  IN IN IN!

    • Laylalola

In. The yellow and red make me think of Taylor Swift’s usual yellow hair and red lipstick, and by God, if Taylor Swift can get away with it 1,000 times then I’m going to let Emily slide this once.

IN – seriously, what’s not to love here?

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

OUT.  Great dress, but her hair and makeup are too harsh and I can’t believe how much I hate those shoes.

    • Vaniljekjeks

In, but it needs a bit more color.  It needs a black belt, and some turquoise jewelry.

    • Corsetmaker

IN. I like the red lips and I’m fed-up of anti-matchiness. It’s become as tyrannical a rule (generally, not specifically here) as matching once was. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HIZ7S2FRLC52NXARXQ4ERHNOGE Liz

      Approved.

    • Jessica Rowe

Love the dress. Love the shoes.  Hate that colour yellow.  Hate.  Can I do a half and half?

    • Judy_J

I like it all except the red lips and nails. IN.

    • MzzPants

Yellow + Red = Fast Food Chain.  OUT.

IN. Take it easy on the lipstick next time dear.

    • AlexisPayne

      Kind of love it, in.

    • marilyn

In.  She needs a bold contrast to match the bold color of the dress.  So, the lips and nails are fine. The shoes may have been a tad matchy-matchy, but that is not fatal.  She could have gone with contrasting shoes, as long as they were not too busy, and been fine.

      In. It works overall.

    • Call me Bee

Wow–I am torn.  Yes–dynamite dress and shoes (I like that they match–it’s the sweater-set gal in me…) and I like her hair here.  But honey those lips!  Makes her look 20 years older.  So I have to say OUT.  Anything that makes you look older is an out, no question.

    • jw_ny

      OUT!

Hate the harsh red lip and matchy toenail/fingernail polish…hate the matchy yellow shoe & dress.  As separates, I like the shoes and dress though, and think the color looks good on her.  Her hair is kind of severe…to match the severe lip I guess, and her face looks awfully pale, shiny and pastey.

    • RebeccaKW

I think she looks good.  Yes, the lipstick is all wrong, so is the nail polish.  The shoes wouldn’t be my first choice, but they are fabulous and are not A. black peep toes or B. silly putty pumps.  But the dress is beautiful and she looks good in it.  In.

    • Spicytomato1

Unless she’s sporting horizontal stripes or big red shoes, I don’t think this is quite in Ronald McDonald land. It’s lovely. Springy and sassy. IN!

    • http://twitter.com/somuchhotter Ethan Barclay-Ennew

In, but she still looks a little too harsh for my taste

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/J2VE4NE2FY2BP4QD2XOYKJGLPI Laura

Nah. Don’t like the cut of the dress. Kind of costumey, especially with the shoes, although the shoes are quite fierce on their own. OUT.

    • PeggyOC

In.  The yellow is maybe just a little off for her skin tone, but it’s a great outfit and she looks like she feels great in it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/sorana.tarmu Sorana Tarmu

IN! The make-up is orangey enough to work. No complaints about accessorizing either. Love the color.

    • Nariya

Mrs. Ronald McDonald!!! I might have given her an IN before reading that phrase, but it’s settled: OUT. Not hugely so though. It’s the makeup.

    • eclare

I actually like the red nails and lips – it’s a strong and unexpected contrast that keeps the look from being too cutesy.

    • http://twitter.com/stopENtalk Brittany Johnstone

      In! This is perfection.

    • fringebenefit

IN. The lips and nails are not clashy in the least. They pop harmoniously and smartly.

    • EEKstl

IN for me.  I love the red lips and nails with the yellow, especially such a bright yellow. If she’d gone softer she risked looking washed out.  And while yes, a BIT matchy matchy with the shoes, the sparkles save it.  I think she looks fantastic.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

IN. She needed the shoes, lips, nails etc. to pump up that rather sad little dress. The close-up reveals that there was more visual interest in person but still, a little wrinkled and frumpy no?  Don’t like the neckline either. But she pulls it off..as she so often does.

    • belfebe

IN.  She looks lovely.  Love the shoes too.

    • elleg929

OUT! That fabric looks like a table cloth.

    • Kayceed

Hmmmm, love the dress, especially the stitching used as a design element for the silhouette – very nice. However, the skirt is wrinkled and the lipstick… I think a bold lip is called for, but there may be a bit too much orange in the red – a truer red I think would work better. Oh the dilemma – I say in.

    • Sara__B

Out. You’re right, T Lo — Ronald McDonald more than spring. And that great dress is not her color.

    • Louise Bryan

Not the best yellow for her skin tone, but I still thinks she looks very good.  B- = IN

    • unbornfawn

Little Miss Sunshine! I like the dress. It’s fun and vibrant. Too bad she messed up with the details. Softer hair and softer make-up would have made this a great look. Her posture in the first photo is doing her no favors. I want to encourage starlets to wear color more often…but I can’t quite give this look an IN. The dress is the only thing working here. so OUT

    • girliecue

She looks fine, so she’s In, but for some reason the effect of the entire look is dated. Didn’t sleep well so too tired to care, but this picture looks like it could easily have been taken in some other decade.

    • poggi

I love the cut and color of the dress.  Agree that the red nails and lips are a little too high contrast.  But still in because it’s color!

    • bluefish

Very cute dress — suits her but the color not great on her and the heavy duty scarlet makes me think of Don Draper’s Mystery Date from last night’s episode!  Way too much color going on for her.

    • jjfg

Don’t love the red, and from the neck up, too severe, plus the shoes, bling aside, are a bit DTM.  I do like the dress but that’s one ball vs. three strikes, which in most leagues is an OUT.

    • guest2visits

She looks fresh and beautiful; but that is another hard yellow to wear.
Red and yellow primary colors always look alittle cartoony to me.

      she looks great, so IN!

    • Susan Crawford

This gets an IN from me! Love the color of the dress on her, and frankly, I love the dress itself – VERY flattering cut. I probably would vote for a less RED-red lip and nail-color, and would have gone for a peachy-rose or even a moderate coral tone. Of course, I need those shoes instantly, and while they are a shade matchy-matchy, Emily is rockin’ and rollin’, so before sending them to me, she should walk proud in them. Oh, and Emily? Would you throw in the clutch when you send over the shoes?

    • alyce1213

IN. Don’t look for trouble where there isn’t any.

    • crash1212

IN. Could have toned down the red a bit, but this overall look is a knock out! I’m not a person who can wear yellow and so I’m shocked when I see somebody swathed in it, however, I think this shade makes her skin look all creamy and pretty. It’s a problematic color that I think she pulls off nicely.

    • Catiline

      or
      2) Peacock blue shoes
      3) Raisin colored nails
      4) Berry lipstick

And she would have knocked this out of the park.

    • http://twitter.com/RosalieJayne Rosalie Carvin

I agree with the the criticism and usually I hate yellow anything with a passion but for some reason I really love this look. I just can’t put my finger on it. It’s an IN for me.

Yellow is tough to pull off, but I think she looks great, and she looks like she likes the way she looks, so even though I’d probably have gone with a more subdued nail/lipstick, I still say IN, because the overall effect is good.

Anyone can wear yellow, you just have to find the correct yellow for you.  I am so tired of hearing who can and cannot wear an entire spectrum of one color.  The dress is fabulous if a little rumpled.  Lips are awesome and the only problem I’m having with the nails is that they match; but that’s just me.  Love the shoes, but have to agree that they are too matchy matchy.  Overall, IN!

The first thing I thought when I saw the pic was: cute. I read your criticism and I think you’re complaining for the shake of complaining. IN.

    • Celandine1

IN! Not completely sold on the lip and nail color but she look great. As a few others have said I am really glad not to see a nude anything or a platform in sight.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_K7VOQSAYZ7H2OBX6LOJNNIBSSE Amanda

I like it and I love her…so IN.

    • formerlyAnon

      In.

You guys are no doubt right. But she still looks good and put together. And if a matchy shoe and an over-bright nail/lip is all that’s wrong, it doesn’t disqualify her from in. Plus, I like that yellow and her chutzpa in choosing it. Hard to wear.

    • joe_tey83

      Mediocre.

    • PeaceBang

I don’t love the color on her and you’re right about the lips and nails — too much — but nothing bad enough to render it out. She’s polished and lovely and the shoes are squeal-inducing. So, IN.

    • harleydear

In. In in in. And in.

    • Dhammadina

Cute. In. I think the red is ok because the yellow is strong, not pastel.

    • rainwood1

If you have skin with blue undertones, you can’t wear mustard yellow well.  Her stylist needs to understand what colors do and do not work with her client’s coloring.  The same is true with the ketchup-colored lips.  Emily needs a red that has a blue undertone to it if she wants to go red.  I learned all these lessons the hard way, but I didn’t have a professional dressing me.

    • j_anson

Out. All the colors involved are all wrong for her. Yuck. (ETA: I actually think the red and yellow work together. Just not on HER.)

Not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but really cute. IN.

In. I like the contrast between the bright red and the yellow.

    • Stubenville

Would you like fries with that dress?

    • Monabel

White girls shouldn’t wear most yellows.

      • bellafigura1

???  That’s a heckuva broad brush ya got there, Monabel.  Kate Hudson, the whitest white girl on planet, in How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days, for one obvi example.

If her hair was down and her makeup softer, I would love this. She looks beautiful but too much. Out.

      Damn right I’m feisty. IN.

    • demidaemon

I actually really like this. I agree that it’s a bit too matchy, but, all things considered, she looks good. IN.

    • benjamin478

Not great by any means. the detailing is pretty off here, but nothing is offensive enough for me to say that she doesn’t look good overall. IN

    • NurseEllen

This look is giving me a headache.  OUT.

    • chitowndg

In, and I bet it looked pretty fierce in person.

    • leah besson

      IN!  i love it

    • LambeeBaby

Out. I don’t think the color is doing anything for her.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

pretty dress, great collar. agreed about the shoes. i, alone perhaps, rarely criticize bright red lipstick, mainly cos it’s been in my family now for, what, more than sixty years. nail polish coulda shoulda woulda maybe better gone pastel blue or brown or something. i dont care much for matching makeup.

but the dress is so nice it tips her into the plus column for half-deceased me.

    • Aly Light

      IN.

    • ccm800

Those shoes are fine. I’m over the whole consorted opinion that shoes can’t match. It makes a look a little more formal and with enough in between it is 100 percent okay.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IHWCJIMARF4OOW6PQZQS3RFOOA JillK

      Horrifyingly brash. OUT.

And see a podiatrist and have those ugly bunions fixed.  I refuse to believe you can’t afford it.

    • bitterk

Absolutely lovely dress and the fit is perfect but the color does nothing for her.  I also think the shoes are too matchy matchy.   Sorry, Em but this is an OUT.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

in.  i love her.  i hate yellow but i love her.

    • Sophie Collier

Not a good color for her, but it is an adorable dress (and I like the shoes, natch.)  I think Christina Hendricks could do nice things for this one.

IN!  Not many can pull off a fabulous bright yellow like this, and there’s not a thing wrong with her adorable pops of red here and there!  Well done, Ems!

I don’t think the yellow works for her, but it’s not so bad that it’s an out. IN.

IN. I’m not a huge fan of the detailing either, but at least she didn’t do the nude lips/nude platform pumps thing. And overall she looks stunning.

    • Renaissance_Man_ATL

      IN!  Love the whole look.

    • DCSheehan

In. Matchiness is a bit much but look at those gorge shoes. And overall she looks well put together.

    • http://twitter.com/LOfficielEbony TheVeryLivingEND

I’m getting a Ronald McDonald ketchup and mustard vibe…and I don’t like it. :-( But, I love her.  Alas, I agree with TLo. Reluctantly, I vote OUT.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/URGJGGSQIBGBMQ3G72VBF45JBQ Kelly

LOVE the dress. Love the lipstick and the nails with the dress.  LOVE the shoes, BUT not with this dress.

    • lrhoff

No, no, no.  This is so wrong it hurts.  Terrible color for her, and she should don a garbage bag and duck out of whatever event she’s at before she’s embarrassed beyond return.  Oh my.

    • BrightsideSusan

LOVE the shoes with the dress.  We don’t always have to avoid matching elements, do we?  I am happy to see lip color. In.

    • DebbieLovesShoes

      Sorry, I really love it.

    • AWStevens

      Love it, even the hair…

    • Derek_anny

In enough to be in.  I’m not from the TLo school of anti-matching.  Nails could have been a slightly more orange red, as opposed to this bluer red (that’s the best I can describe it.)  And she looks like she has wax lips.  Do they even make those anymore?  Even with that, she’s in enough to be in.

    • http://twitter.com/ptliontamer Wilhelmina Frame

In. I thought she was Dita at first.

    • luckymom22

Her toes don’t look comfortable. But, yes.

    • http://twitter.com/Merneith Merneith

I’m going to say OUT. That is not her shade of yellow.

    • http://tigergray.blogspot.com/ Tiger Gray

I like the dress, but not on her. Also whenever I see red and yellow together like that, I think of the ketchup and mustard squeeze bottles in diners. OUT.

    • bellafigura1

I now can not look at this without seeing (and kind of smelling) those Halloween wax lips.

    • http://twitter.com/rachelruthlee Rachel Lee

I wonder if she spent the night trying not to flash her bra. It looks like the front might sag if she relaxed her stance a little. Also that is an awful yellow with her skin tone! I do like the dress very much, but this has to be an Out.

In. Eh the lips are fine, maybe coral would have been better but that is too nit picky for me….besides I really like her so she just shines in whatever

    • Thathoodwink

      Wrinkles! Evil fabric….

    • leftcoastpickle

In – love the dress, and she looks great in it, but hate the shoes. I have a sparkly shoe bias, and they are too matchy with the dress. And not to be personal, but do her big toes point in strange directions? But she looks great, wish I could get away with this!

    • librarygrrl64

I love the shoes themselves, but they’re too matchy. I kind of like the bold lip and nail because of the vibrant hue of the dress. Overall, an IN for me.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1264609232 Samantha Ritchie

i get the nails and lips critique. but the shoes are fantastic with that dress!

    • cleep1000

      OUT. The color is wrong.

    • ThaliaMenninger

IN, except I really do hate the lips and nails.
