In or Out: Cat Deeley in Tadashi Shoji

Posted on April 03, 2012

This goes out to all the kittens who’ve written us to ask “How come you two bitches don’t cover Cat Deeley more? She dresses fabulously!” All right, then. You asked for it.

Cat Deeley attends the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Foundation’s 33rd Annual College Television Awards in a Tadashi Shoji dress paired with a Chloe clutch and Jimmy Choo sandals.

Tadashi Shoji Spring 2012 Collection

What an adorable springtime dress. What lackluster styling. We’d have to see it to be sure, but we think the dress would look better on her if it was belted, although that may throw off the proportions as to the shoulder treatment. Like we said; we’d have to see. One thing we absolutely do not need to see are those shoes and that bag. Come on now, Cat. You’re a blonde white woman in a yellow-and-white dress. Do the freaking math. Beige was not the way to go. How about a little sparkle somewhere? A bangle or something, maybe? You can’t just pick out a pretty dress and call it a day, you know.

And we’ll say it: Those shoes are a bit on the ugly side.

Vote Now!

IN! Oh, hush. All women don’t have to look like drag queens, you know.

OUT! Put a little effort in next time, honey!

It shocked and dismayed many of the Bitter Kittens to do so, but they wound up voting Fergie’s blood pressure dress an IN.

    Right as usual, my friends….

  • Not a bit on the ugly side. Officially on the ugly side. Cute dress but still OUT.  If she had stood up straight well maybe…..

    • NC_Meg

Agree on all counts. A BIT on the ugly side? Those things are fug.

  • wilted shoulder poof. story of my life.

  • i heart Cat Deeley, she’s on my 10 women I’d like to go for a pint with, but that is not her dress. OUT!

  • lilibetp

A BIT on the ugly side?  IMHO, they’ve gone completely past ugly into hideous.

  • IN… she looks really pretty.  I like everything… I do not think a belt would work at all.  A bangle, yes.

    • Vickiefantastico

Completely agree! She looks adorable, and I really like the shoes.

      • Gener1c

I have some shoes very much like those – I adore them and get complements every time I pull them out.  I can’t listen to TLo this time.  And I love Cat Deeley.

  • CUTE DRESS. Terrible posture and boring accessories. I usually hate everything she wears…so…yeah

  • fireontiger

Yuck. What is she dressing as, a deviled egg?

    • Aly Light

She’s a beautiful pineapple, of course!

  • BrooklynBomber

Awful dress, wrong shoes. She did put in effort, but in the wrong directions. Out.

  • Do people really ask you to feature more Cat Deeley? I’ve never noticed a lack of her. I really like that dress, but I think I’d like it more with turquoise sandals, a different bag and a better pedicure.

    •  This is the first time I’ve laid eyes on her, although I’m familiar with her name. And I have no idea what she does, but I will as soon as I google her.

      • BrooklynBomber

You took the words right out of my mouth.

  • howdoilook

Ugh, out. Stylists are so scared of color in accessories, aren’t they?

  • This dress is gorgeous! But I’m not a fan of either Cat’s shoes or the runway model’s.  And that purse. And that hair! This is a lovely lady who we’ve seen wear dresses confidently. Why does she look like she wants to bolt?

    • mountainFashionista

Her neck and shoulders seem to screaming, “I want to get out of here. Right. Now!”

Either that, or she’s slightly shrugging in an effort to hold up a poorly fitted bustline…

  • This is tough.  I do love the dress, but those nude thick strapped pumps are a definite yuck.  LOVE that damn clutch.  But the hair and bright red lips, don’t seem to go. For the overall effect, I am stepping to the Out verdict.  She could have done much better.

  • momogus

I think she looks pretty – IN.

  • Judy_J

All the elements of this look add up to BORING.  OUT.

  • Ugh, Bad shoes.  BAD.  Cute dress.  I think the bag might not have been so egregious if the shoes weren’t also beige.  IN, with reservations.

  • lalahartma

  • RebeccaKW

In.  I think the dress is cute and hair and makeup are good.  The clutch is bland and the shoes are ugly, but I just dislike them, I don’t HATE them.  Some bangles or a ring would be nice.  But the length of the dress is good.  The color is pretty on her.  Overall, I like more than I dislike.

  • kimmeister

I kind of like the shoes *hides*.  I’ll give her an in because she’s a blonde white woman wearing a white and yellow dress, yet manages to not look washed out.

    • emeazul

      We can hide together…

I’d seen this shoe before (on her *shudder*) and I searched for it ($700 bucks, as if!) but alas, went to zee outlets and Nine West has the SAME (or almost the same – proprietary technical differences, you know) in a metallic silver/pewter-textured finish…and I do think they look lovely on my gams (even saved $635 buckaroos)…

So there, in full view of the bitterarians: I LIKE THE SHOES! Her posture? Not so much.

      • kimmeister

I’m with you on the posture too!  Not that we want the “I need to pee” look, but she could at least unpaste her arms from her sides.

      •  I think the shoes are cool as hell. They just need to be worn with the right clothes, of which the dress is the exact opposite. It’s too delicate. Also, not loving the color, but at least they’re not white.

  • Laurie Bergman

Those shoes are a LOT on the ugly side.  And yes…blonde + white + yellow = need for color relief somewhere.

  • hughman

She’s holding that clutch like she’s bringing in a stool sample to the clinic. CLUTCH THE DAMN THING, WOMAN!

  • PeggyOC

Out. It’s not that fabulous a dress on her, and the lackluster styling and terrible shoes just drag the whole thing down.

  • belfebe

OUT.  She looks very washed out.

  • DCSheehan

Out. Those shoes obviously. The dark to light in the dress isn’t working here either.

    • giiiirrrr

I can never understand why designers do that.  Michael Kors is right–no woman wants to look like she has big hips.

  • In. Styling still can’t overshadow that dress.

  • Sara__B

OUT. Wrong shoes and purse, and her slouchy pigeon-toed posing is totally lacking in energy. I like Kat Deely on So You Think You Can Dance, where she makes the craziest clothes look fabulous and seems like a genuinely nice person. Maybe her personality is a major part of what makes her outfits work.

  • The shoes and bag make the whole thing look so bored. The shoulder poof even gave up.

  • DeborahLipp

This is one of the worst looks I’ve seen on Cat, who really does usually look fab. It’s baaaarely In, but it’s In.

  • Love the dress (and Cat) enough to ignore the lackluster styling/accessories. IN!

Thanks for featuring her, T Lo! Would love to see a weekly post about her SYTYCD wardrobe this summer 🙂

    • merciblahblah

A to the MEN!!! I concur, sir. I love Cat so much that I cannot give her an Out, but this is not one of my favorites of hers. She is usually spot on. Yes yes yes to the SYTYCD weekly wardrobe post!!

  • TieDye64

This is screaming for some brightly colored strappy sandals. The shoes are quite ugly and the bag is a snooze. The dress isn’t bad but put it all together and it’s an OUT.

  • AlexisPayne

Cute dress, but the hair would have been better with a blowout. I can’t even with those shoes. Out.

  • joe_tey83

That shoulder thingy looks like it has clinical depression.

  • I love the dress. Her face and hair are fine; I think it is the styling that is off. Though I am wondering what color accessories would have worked. Ooh – I know, let’s play stylists! What color shoes/purse would you put with that? Ideas?

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I love Cat Deeley, but those shoes and the bag are hiddy, and she needs some jewelry.  Makeup’s good, but the hair is lacking.  OUT.

  • OUT, for reasons as stated. I don’t know who she is but I do give her points for looking like someone I’d like to talk to. But that dress needs something, all right.

  • guestela

  • Jessi03

OUT.  The dress is cute, but doesn’t fit, and the shoes make my eyes ill.  How did Jimmy Choo create such a Payless circa 1998 abomination?

  • Kyle Crawford

I am a horrible horrible person, but is she too old for this dress ?

  • benjamin478

I think an OUT. from the accessories to the hair and makeup, nothing is helping the dress.

  • carolie_king

Love “do the math,” and agree, but gotta stick up for my way-tall gal.  It ain’t easy being an amazon (even one with a slammin’ bod like this) in a world full of teeny elfish wisps.  So IN.

  • Susan Crawford

I love this Tadashi dress SOOO much! The cut, the length, the detailing – it just looks amazing. But T and Lo, I bow to you again. That blah styling just does NOTHING to make the normally effervescent Ms. Deeley look truly fabulous. The dull, clunky silly-putty shoes and that generic beige clutch with a metal bobble are so boring. A little color pop was needed SOMEWHERE! And a lovely sparkling bangle or a pretty cuff bracelet would have been in order. So – alas – this is an OUT. And it pains me to say that since Cat and Tadashi are both pretty damned fabboo in my book.

  • PeaceBang

    Harmless. In.

  • In_Stitches

Her skin looks terrible against the paleness of that dress and the accessories aren’t helping.  OUT.

  • crash1212

Neck up = IN. Neck down = OUT. I don’t even like the dress all that much, even with better accessories, it would be an OUT for me.

  • Those shoes are inexcusable. OUT.

  • Call me Bee

She is always an OUT for me…

  • another_laura

Out.  The bag and shoes are to barf up my lunch.  A different color won’t save the shoes.  The dress – just no.  And I can’t really say why, but maybe it’s that it takes something I think of as evening (Wilma, chiffony-ness) and cuts it off to try and be a cocktail dress.

On the plus side, I applaud the judicious use of yellow (rather than screaming it) and hair and makeup are done well.

  • CatherineRhodes

IN, although the length on the model was better.

  • Bozhi

I love the dress, but it looks too small on her, like she should have gone up a size and it needs to be longer.  Those shoes should be worn with jeans only.  The accessories she chose are a total disaster.

  • formerlyAnon

Huh. In seems too kind and out, too harsh.

Well, we do not assemble here to be fair. Out.

The beige/nude accessories just don’t say “Spring!” to me. And if you MUST [personal prejudice intruding] ruin a beautifully simply dress with a gratuitous & over-large floofy ruffle/sleeve, honor demands that you go with prettier, girlier, light & fluffy accessories.

  • Out – beige and yellow should NEVER go together!

  • mjude

OUT. have no clue to who she is.

  • Kate4queen

IN-for the dress OUT for the beige bits

  • Aly Light

Frenchie at the dance in Grease. “You look like a beautiful…. pineapple!”

  • I like the dress (although it makes me want to go scramble some eggs) enough to forgive the rest.  In.

  • NurseEllen

Cute dress but obviously it’s a nightmare to style.  Hair up, of course, because who wants hair to cover the shoulder pouf?  Usually hair up means an OK for more showy earrings, but who wants earrings that compete with the shoulder pouf?  Don’t think a belt would work, you’d lose all the subtlety of the shading from white to lemon.  Which leaves a fun cuff or a few bangles, and eye-catching shoes…..although not TOO kick ass, because who wants to compete with the shoulder pouf?  That purse is awful, I hate it much more than the shoes.

Actually, that shoulder pouf is causing a lot of problems. Maybe the thing to do would be to put a big old colorful, sparkly brooch right at the poufy shoulder.  As long as it’s screaming for attention, have at it.

As it is, though, I vote Ms. Deeley OUT.

  • Joyce VG

IN!  She looks beautiful.  Ok I’m not looking at her feet but the rest is so lovely!

  • She wears those shoes ALL THE TIME on the show. I personally like them, but I think she could stand to expand her shoe collection.

  • unbornfawn

    OUT. Learn to accessorize darling.

  • Pants_are_a_must

OUT for styling. Those shoes are the devil and really? A beige clutch?

  • Tough call! Does accessory fail mean an automatic out?  She looks perfectly fine, even though the dress looks much more elegant on the runway.  Is hers constructed in a heavier material?  It doesn’t seem to hang as well and I don’t think that’s all down to the wrinkles.

Oh, what the hell IN.  I’m feeling generous today.

  • Get those same shoes in white, shake your hair out, and swap the clutch for something brightly colored, and you’d be perfect, Miss Deeley. I do adore the dress, though, and I think the restrained earring choice was a good one. It’s enough to give her an IN.

  • TheOriginalLulu

Those shoes are A LOT on the ugly side. I like yellow and navy together, so I’m going to say that a nice pair of navy sandals would have looked great here.

  • jw_ny

Don’t like the dress, don’t like the shoes & clutch, don’t like her lipstick and hair, etc., etc….

  • Rand Ortega

On the nose, TLo. What a waste of an adorable spring dress. *sigh*

  • In

  • Ugly shoes cannot defeat her overall loveliness, In.

  • Vaniljekjeks

Lemon meringue pie.  And not in a good way.  More in an OUT way.

  • marilyn

Perfect.  I don’t care about the shoes and bag, because they don’t fight the dress for attention.  What I particularly like about the dress is that it is fitted on her, not loose and tween-y like the one on the runway model.   She did not distract with loud accessories, which allows us to focus on the dress, with its iteresting cut and color.   Longer earrings and a bangle bracelet would have made it more evening, but she would need to stick with pearls, ivory, or diamonds.  But still, I like it just the way it is. IN!

  • Caaro3

Wrong shoes, wrong bag override the pretty.  There oughta’ be a law!  OUT

  • I like the shoes, but not with that dress.  If ever a dress called for a pretty pair of strappy sandals and an arm full of bangles…

  • SewingSiren

I like the way she dresses most of the time. This is an in.

  • MilaXX

small IN because this is just a “meh” outfit but I think cat dresses fab 99% of the time.

By the way if whinging is all it takes, how about some Ashley Fink? She pops up every now and again and as been quietly stepping up her game.

  • some Christian Louboutain fifi strass pumps, a pale pink clutch and hire another hair and make-up person too.

  • sagecreek

In, I think she looks lovely.

  • Wow, I can’t believe how much I hate this dress! Yellow? And what’s that on the shoulder? OUT

  • A tepid IN. I do like those sandals quite a lot, actually. It doesn’t photograph well but it might look better in person.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

i dont even like the dress.
not w/ that thing on the single shoulder it does have.

  • Hhhope

I’m not liking the dipped-in-bleach look of the dress, and the accessories are, as stated, all wrong. Plus, bad lipstick color choice, and the hair’s a bit meh. OUT.

  • Anna Garces

The dress is too light and airy to bog it down with heavy accessories.  Shoes and purse are too heavy looking and her make up should be dewy not matted.  Her hair should be either messier or flowing…

  • maggiemaybe

Those shoes are totally bumming my high.

  • saanrio

The shoes are horrid, the clutch completely forgettable, and the dress is cute, but kind of boring at the same time.  I would have liked to see the yellow continue further down instead of fading to white so quickly.

  • StrandedFashionista

Needs some red or blue in there, in my opinion. But still cute, IN.

  • Lilithcat

No belt.  Indeed, I think it should be just a tad looser.  Compare the fit on the model; she wears it as though the dress were floating on the breeze.  I’d also prefer it if that shoulder poof were toned down.

The shoes and clutch are godawful with this dress (and probably with any dress).

    I’ve got to say OUT.

  • Jesus, Mary, and Frank, the shoulder poof, which looks like a pile of baby-burping cloths, is ruining a totally cute dress.

I like the way the dress fits her. It looks 100 times better on her than on the model (I’m noticing that a lot lately. Maybe designers are making clothes that requires curves this season?), who looks like a little girl wearing her mother’s favorite spring dress. I frigging love the shoes, but they’re much too heavy for what Cat’s wearing. Plus I don’t like the color. I like that clutch, but, again, it’s a boring color choice.

Her manicure is perfect. But she’s OUT

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

OUT.  I hate that dress. It reminds me of lemon meringue pie and not in a good way.

  • Love the shoes and the bag … but not with that dress.

  • Eclectic Mayhem

I’m voting with my Nationality – IN!

  • Cute dress. Flesh colored bandage shoes are horrible. On the whole, I guess I’ll go with in.

  • guest2visits

    But I love those shoes.
The way she’s standing, she looks too tall for her own dress.

  • Sophie Collier

Kid can’t pose to save her life, can she?  Awful posture, blah styling.  OUT.  Took a good dress and made it sad.

  • Hideous, hideous shoes, and stop slouching, Cat! OUT.

  • Ogden1990

I love Cat Deely. My eyes refuse to look below her neck.

  • MzzPants

    Ace bandage shoes = OUT.

  • I’m voting Out. Could have been good, but it just looks plain.

  • shiftercars

OUT. She looks painfully awkward. What is up with the way she’s holding that bag?

  • aristida_girl

Although i like the clutch and shoes, i agree different accessories would have made this dress much better…red belt! anyway, IN because she still looks pretty

  • nancy

I’ll have to say out… everything together looks off. The dress is cute but she’s either slouching or hunching over or something, it doesn’t look like she’s happy wearing it. I don’t care for the shoes at all. But I LOVE the bag!

  • Out. Her posture is abysmal and those shoes look like they’re from Aldo. And what’s with the weird ball and chain detail on the clutch?

  • OUT. Ugly and dull.

  • understateddiva

In, for wearing a pretty dress that suits her.  The shoes have to go, but they’re not ruining it completely.

  • demidaemon

OUT. The dress is a bit too shapeless, and it lacks some zing.

  • IN, but I never want to see those shoes again.

  • GorgeousThings

It could have been an in had she said, “Fuck those opinionated queens and their goddamn unborn fawns. I’m going to OWN this look!” As it is, she looks more like she realized it wasn’t up to snuff in the car on the way over, and now she’s all apologetic about it.

So, sorry Cat, luv ya, but OUT.

  • FayeKat

She looks like she is melting down in these shoes! OUT

  • It’s a mix of bridesmaid and cupcake. But I like that it isn’t overly twee and I think the color is gorgeous. So I’m leaning towards IN.

  • Larkin21

I don’t even like the dress that much. The colors don’t really look good on her. OUT.

  • EEKstl

OUT.  I’m not even sure I like the dress, but maybe with the right accessories to make it sing it would have impressed me more.

  • alyce1213

Out.  It’s kind of an upscale bridesmaid dress, and the Jimmy Choo sandals are all wrong.

  • JaneDC

The dress on the model was longer and looser. A softer look that didn’t look like it needed something else to make it work. Whole thing is just missing something. Out.

  • sweetlilvoice

    Out! Spice it up.

  • OUT. She looks very uncomfortable.

  • Jennifer Hofstetter

The shoes may be hiddy, but the hair, makeup, dress and bag are okay by me. IN.

  • Pterodactyl111

  • sleah_in_norcal

out.  the shoes are not only ugly but way too casual for the dress.  ditto the clutch.  the dress looks deflated when compared to the runway version, where the shoulder thingy is standing up and has some shape to it.

  • Sue_Asponte

I love those shoes, but not with that dress. They’d be great with jeans. But the model’s shoes are no better.
Well good grief she’s so adorable from the ankles up I’m giving her an IN.

  • OUT.  Such a happy dress made to look sad.  So very, very sad.

  • Rrroza

Although her face looks lovely, OUT. Fuuuuuggly shoes and bag. Agree with Foodycat below…turquoise sandals I was hoping for as I scrolled. But I don’t even like the dress on the model. Shape & coloring together don’t work to my eyes: the shape is kinda sack-like doing her no favors and color remind me of eggs. Happy Easter!

  • lesmaha

    boring bridesmaid dress. out.

  • ccm800

i wish they would have flipped the gradient so she looked like she wet herself.

  • CMS

Ack, it’s too wrinkled for my liking.  Love the flowy non-creased version on the model though.

  • ThaliaMenninger

Dress is ok, but she looks uncomfortable as hell, like she knows the shoes, bag, hairdo and makeup are all wrong for the dress. I vote OUT.

  • GTrain

    Boring. OUT

  • Those shoes are just sad, but the dress is cute so a tepid IN for me.

  • Judih1

Bland and boring, despite the bright yellow. OUT

  • Out. Styling isn’t whimsicle enough for a 30+ woman in a yellow marshmallow dress. I love the yellow marshmallow, but red lipstick and average hair aren’t making it. I would prefer any lighter lip and a sparkle nude shadow.

  • Out. How dull.

  • bitterk

She dresses fabulously?  Have you watched SYTYCD?  She always looks like big bird at a disco.

  • LambeeBaby

She looks sweet, but she needs to accept her inner diva and bitch it up a bit. I agree that the styling is way off. Snooze worthy shoes and bag.

  • Out. It’s doing something funky to her shoulders.
