In or Out: Brooklyn Decker in Stella McCartney

Posted on April 04, 2012

Many of the Bitter Kittens in our commentariat have indicated that they aren’t particularly fond of Stella McCartney’s work. We admit, there are times when her pieces can get a bit overworked, if not downright silly-looking. But this little getup is quite impressive for its simple chicness, no?

Brooklyn Decker attends the ‘Battleship’ Japan Premiere in Tokyo in a Stella McCartney gown.

Stella McCartney Evening 2012 Collection

Side boob is kind of unfortunate with such a potentially elegant dress, as is visible illusion netting. And we kind of hate what happens to the belt in the back.  She looks pretty great, but those little details are causing eye twitches.

Are we being picking nits?

Vote Now!

IN! Yes, you’re picking nits.

OUT! These aren’t nits! These are DEALBREAKERS!

The commentariat was torn over Cat Deeley’s tissue paper dress, (see what we did there?) but the vote came down to OUT in the end.

IN, I love this. And I think I should have it… it would look better on me and my lack of side boob cleavage 😉

  • Vaniljekjeks

It’s not that it’s bad… it’s just Olivia Wilde’s dress.  Not hers.  So out.

    • Sobaika Mirza

Funny – I was going to say the same thing, especially since the model looks a lot like Olivia Wilde as well.

      • NC_Meg

She really does. I saw that and thought, “Olivia Munn is modeling for Stella McCartney now? Good for her.”

      • schadenfreudelicious

she really does, but i’m guessing its Shalom Harlow??

        • Little_Olive

It is. Man, she is gorgeous -and this is not a good picture of her (what’s up with hair and makeup there, Stella?)

          • I dunno – it’s good enough that she looks like a 7-8 years younger actress, and an often well-put together one at that. Not bad.

          • Susan683

Think so?  I think she looks Botox-ed to death….or maybe even full blown plastic surgery?  But I digress…..I can’t forgive the nude side panel.  This is an OUT.

    • VioletFem

I was going to comment to say the exact same thing. Love the dress, just not on her.

  • lilazander

You are not being picking nits, the dress is great, but the spilling boob hit me in the eyes right away (looks cheap and desperate) and my attention drifted off of the dress. But it sure is a classy number.

  • calimon

    I’m totally split.

  • elleg929

OUT – the little “quirks” are ruining the entire visual.

  • Sara__B

OUT, for all the nits you picked, plus an additional one – her hair. A sleeker do was required for this sleek gown.

    • Judih1

      My sentiments exactly -OUT

  • I don’t think they are deal breakers.  The total look is an IN for me.  But side boob on such a figure seems kinda crazy and surely was avoidable…

  • Out.  You lost me at side boob.  Her boob looks pancaked and weird.

  • kimmeister

Sooooo close.  Would be a total in if it weren’t for the side boob, weird floating frontal belt, and illusion netting digging into her side.

  • Oh, I was completely mistook her for Heidi Klum. I was so impressed that it wasn’t as short-short as usual…

  • IAmDisappoint

Out. That boob-bib is definitely eyecatching. And not in a good way.

  • janedonuts

No, that side boob net thing is just weird. Go full side boob or go home is my thinking.

    • Little_Olive

Totally. Just pure sideboob would have been acceptable. To have your sideboob+torso appear wrinkled is not.

  • mmc

You are not being nit picks.

  • Out.

It reminds me of when I was a kid and used to pretend I was wearing luxurious gowns by belting bed sheets around me.

    • girliecue

I did that too! And then I’d get my Barbie and drape her in Kleenexes. Good times…

  • sherrietee

saggy wrinkled side boob places it firmly in OUT territory for me.  Pretty blue color, though.

  • AlinaValero

the dress is in. on another woman it would be even more in. her make up looks like she slept in it and her hair is meh. give it to rosie h-w.

  • Ennovi_R

The dress is IN but she is out for failing to look in the mirror and correct that unfortunate side boob issue.

  • blogless

Out. Stella McCartney is still on a roll with unflattering and weird shaped dresses. She so often has that odd silhouette inside the design that’s supposed to be flattering but to my eye it’s the opposite.

  • It would be perfect if the white just went all the way up the side boob.  And if this gorgeous swimsuit model would actually hire someone decent to do her hair and makeup.

  • her boobs look like mine after I’ve slept in a sports bra. A lot of weird lines created by that sideboob thing. OUT.

  • twocee

Dealbreaker.  The reason it works on the model is because she’s standing in a way that hides the hideousness of the side netting.

  • IN!!!  Love it!!

  • Those are deal breakers in my book. Side boobage is a sad thing. It supports my opinion about Ms McCartney’s work. It just doesn’t quite work, though the baseline notion is a good one.

  • Out.  Too bad really.

  • DinaSews

OUT.  I just can’t look past side boob.  Very distracting.

  • TAGinMO

OUT. The side-boob illusion netting ruins the entire look. Even the model and/or her photographer knew that, which is why she’s assuming the always-attractive “dowager’s hump” pose just to hide that tacky shit!

If the the white fabric just continued up to where the netting ends, it would be an IN for me.

    • formerlyAnon

      “the always-attractive “dowager’s hump” pose”

      Good one.

  • Jecca2244

Great dress, she is just too busty for it.

  • janetjb

The front of the dress is so appealing but the side and back are unfortunate.
Her hair and makeup are lackluster too.

  • jw_ny

Typically I cut some slack for minor flaws…but I can’t in this case because that side boobage netting detail is just awful.  It takes so much attention away from an otherwise lovely gown.  Why Stella?  WHY!?   smh.

Brooklyn looks really good despite that…pretty.

  • IAmJ

I can’t comment on the dress because all I can see is the DIY makeup.

    • poggi

    • emeazul

I know! To me, she looks like she is trying the dress on in the fitting room, after pilates, on her way to get a latte (or whatevs).

The dress is sorta nice…Side boobage and overall schlumpiness make it an outie for me..

  • kelsita421

ugh. this should totally be an in. but the side boob murders it. OUT.

  • belfebe

It’s with a sad heart that I will give her an OUT.  It’s a lovely dress, and she’s lovely in every single aspect except for … the boob.  Perhaps with a better fitting this would not have been an issue and it would have been an easy in.  So unfortunate.

  • fungstyle

no those are some serious nits…. it has the potential to be a great dress but the issues with the netting and how the belt looks in the back ruin it. another case of over-complicating a good idea.

  • formerlyAnon

Out, for precisely the reasons you cite.

This looks so great on her – and could be very, very elegant but side boob covered by visible illusion netting is not elegant. NO. NO. NO.

  • OUT.  Those nits are indeed dealbreakers.  If only she had a clutch under her arm, or a hand strategically covering the illusion netting.  Then it would definitely be an in.

  • erinbinek

Looks great on the model but only because she is covering up the flaws on the sides and in the back.  Plus, this is so not her dress.  Someone without large breasts would be a better fit, since it seems the model has no issue with side-boob. So, to conclude- OUT.

  • ringthing

    Sideboob is always an OUT.

  • Aly Light

I rarely see “side-boob” as a problem, but I actually see what you mean here. All the same, I think it doesn’t overpower the rest of the dress. IN.

  • ugh, side boob. OUT.

  • jill gregory

Out. The side boob with the highish waist is making the girls look a little saggy, which I’m sure they’re not IRL.

  • Out, on her. This is a rather decent dress, but it really should only be worn by boobless models…or maybe Debra Messing….

  • miscorrections

It looks like a TJ Maxxx iteration of a Michael Kors dress. And that HAIR. Out and out.

  • OUT. Only looks good if you keep your arms at your sides and hunch forward and are photographed from the right angle… yuck. Beautiful gal, though, with beautiful posture– a case of werquing a dress that’s not worth it.

  • Clueless_Jock

    I think she looks fantastic.

  • Aurumgirl

It’s technically a good idea with pitiful execution, a primer on how to take a beautiful design and make it ugly in two easy steps.
Stella McCartney just keeps trying to make that illusion netting happen.  I just wish the PTB would stop trying to make Stella McCartney happen.

  • bluefish

I’m one of those who doesn’t care for what I’ve seen of SMcC but this is nice even with the flaws.  An IN though am not crazy about the dated hair.

  • IN. It’s not bad enough to be out.  But it’s close….

  • Out. She needs a bra, and that dress isn’t kind to someone without perky bosoms.

  • girl crow

The belt disturbs me, it looks as though it goes under her skin or something. It looks inserted.

  • granddelusion

No, you’re absolutely right. Would have made a greater impact without the sideboob, and with the belt all the way around. OUT.

  • DeborahLipp

I agree that the sideboob is unfortunate, but I love the belt detail. I think this is a major IN.

  • Ann

Sorry… just can’t deal with the boob. Maybe an “in” on somebody else.

  • In. Love her dress. Her makeup looks a little too natural and non-existent, but the overall look is good.

  • I like the dress, but think she needs more impact out of her makeup & hair.  Out.

  • Spicytomato1

So close. But out for the two reasons you mentioned, side boob and illusion netting. In fact, as a rule, I think illusion netting should qualify for an automatic out.

  • AlexisPayne

Fabulous dress, but that side boob is terribly distracting. Set this dress free to a flat chested starlit.

  • I actually love this look – the sideboob doesn’t bother me, and I didn’t even notice the illusion netting until you mentioned it. Normally I love Stella but this last collection (with the twisty turny cutouts) has been driving me insaaaaaaaaaaane in its ugliness. This is an IN, if only because I hope it means she has new collections to put on the RC.

  • Merridith Kristoffersen

The model is Shalom Harlow, so bow down.  Regarding this look on Brooklyn, the horrible lipstick is killing me. OUT.

    • LJCdoc

Did not know that was Shalom. No frickin wonder she looks so fabulous.

  • JimMcC

Potentially a beautiful dress, but that sheer siding cuts her so strangely and makes the line of her breast look distorted. The best Stella has ever done in that parts of it are lovely but there’s still a detail that makes it unflattering and unfortunate.  OUT!

  • It’s great from the front, but awful from the side. And the awful usually outweighs the not-awful for me (I guess I’m glass half empty so far as sartorial choices go), so Out.

  • Lilithcat

    No, you’re not picking nits.

If the dress had a back, it would be fabulous.  As it is, no.

  • Nicolette Allen

well yeah – its decent stella mccartney because its basically slutty michael kors.  we all think it looks great except for the tacky side boob and illusion netting.  if she fixed that, then it flat out would be a michael kors from his fancy rich people go on a sail boat collection (you know, the one he did before the fancy rich people go on a safari but after fancy rich people go to asia).  So OUT – tacky side boob and illusion netting are never ok

  • JanieS

UGH. Illusion netting + sideboob = UGH.

  • LJCdoc

Gawd. On the model, this looks fabulous. The side boob completely ruins it, and makes it look like it doesn’t fit her. Out, but I’m an exceptionally bitter kitty today.

  • bookish

OUT. Under boob and netting is not ok. It’s unfortunate, because without those details I would have loved it.

  • leah besson

    side boob.  out.

  • guestela

    Bleh. Out.

  • Absolutely OUT for the side boob.

  • Well, in spite of side boob, have to say it’s FAB. IN.

  • understateddiva

Stella McCartney:  expensive fabric in weird shapes.  That illusion netting is one element too many – out.

  • bailey debruynkops

side boob is always an out. ALWAYS.

  • I like it! It might be less side-boob-alicious on someone less well-endowed, but I still think it looks great!

  • TSkot

Some valid points within your nitpicking, but overall she’s va va va voom!  IN

  • AlieMichelle

I love everything but that hiddy side-boob netting. Yeck.

  • Out the side boob part is way too awkward for me.

  • Christine Harding Hart

It’s one of those dresses that is a great concept dress – photographs great, but is unlikely to look exactly right on the red carpet. OUT, unfortunately.

  • Jessica O’Connell

Nit pick away – the dress is gorgeous but the gratuitous side boob totally ruins it for me. OUT.

  • In_Stitches

I hate the color scheme-navy white and gold just reads, well, the Navy.  It’s like she’s the trophy bride of a high ranking Admiral.

  • MzzPants

I gave it consideration until the side/closeup shots.  OUT.

  • Out.  It looked so good at first glance and I thought, “Wow! Stella’s improving dramatically.”  But it lost me at side boobs and illusion netting, and the belt detail adds to the weirdness.  The devil’s in the details.

  • OUT!! that section near the side boob is tortured

  • Joyce VG

  • LesYeuxHiboux

Her makeup is terrifying, and the side-boob spill drags down the chicness level. Definitely a dress for the Kiera Knightleys or Olivia Wildes of the world.

  • Judy_J

Out.  Side boob is just wrong.  That dress would look perfect if the white fabric was in place of that illusion netting.  The side boob and illusion netting make it look cheap and tacky.

  • RebeccaKW

This is a tough one.  I like the idea of the dress.  She’s beautiful, but a little powder and color on the lips never hurt anyone.  The hair is meh.  However, I CAN NOT with the side boob and the netting.  The side boob is bad enough, but then you throw in illusion netting that creates the appearance of wrinkled side-boob?  Out.

  • BayTampaBay

IN!  I usually hate Stella McCartney.

  • OUT – That hair! No makeup! She’s ruining a fabulous dress.

  • MilaXX

OUT! This is a surprisingly nice dress from Stella, skanked up by the side boob and poor illusion netting.

  • Nits are meant to be picked. OUT.

  • Hmm. Side boob aside (wah wah) I love the color and the way it’s draped. In. And with a McCartney, DAMN.

  • You’re all insane;
look away from the TINY side boob and look at the bigger picture.
    The woman looks gorgeous.
    IN. A thousand times IN.

  • Out – like the design but it looks like she has back fat and I know that she doesn’t!
SMc – give her some more material on the top!
Brooklyn’s stylist – what were you thinking?

  • crash1212

OUT. Wrinkled illusion netting side boob is always a deal breaker. However, this dress could be saved and would look smashing with a bit of tweaking, more blue fabric coverage and less/no illusion netting. Maybe Stella could re-make it and we could judge again? Ms. Decker is a stunner, but a little lipstick WITH A BIT OF COLOR never hurt anybody.

  • alyce1213

Without the side boobage/netting offense, the dress would have been “brilliant” — for Stella McCartney.
In the grand scheme of things . . . it’s really nothing special at all.

    • AthenaJ

Agreed! That side/underboob netting ruins what would otherwise be a fantastic dress. I can’t even give this one an in or an out, the wasted potential is just making me too angry.

  • giiiirrrr

OUT.  It’s another freakin’ Miracle Dress, this time with a Wonder Woman belt.  The blue is pretty tho’.

  • Rrroza

OUT. This dress requires perfection in detailing and posing. In the model shot with that pose and the white background, it’s fantastic, but maybe it doesnt work in real life.

  • OUT. So close… yet, so far.

  • Oh, that dress is so very nearly fabulous, but the wrinkly illusion netting is just ugly. OUT.

However that is one of the better things I’ve seen come out of the House of McCartney in quite some time, so it’s actually a hopeful sign in many ways.

  • sagecreek

OUT, Side boobage never is in.

  • CatherineRhodes

  • LittleKarnak

    Dealbreakers for me…OUT!!

  • StrandedFashionista

    I love it. IN.

  • Louise Bryan

From a distance it looks good, but definitely not from the side and close up.  Still I think she’s an in for taking the chance.

  • Yes there is side boob, but the dress is great and suits her ( goes well with her blue eyes). So I’ll forgive the side boob, or at least try to ignore it, and declare it an IN.

  • FayeKat

That side boob is very unfortunate, but i like it too much to care. IN

  • The interesting thing is the side tit isn’t happening in the model shot.  I give Ms. Decker an out for shitty make up, hair and side tits.  Though I am shocked I like 94% of this dress.  As usual, Stella just couldn’t quite get it right.

  • OUT.

I think you’re being quite charitable.  This is not a dress for the well-endowed, or anyone with less than supernaturally perky assets.  And the less said about her hair and makeup, the better.

  • TheOriginalLulu

  • TheDivineMissAnn

It’s a shame about the side boobage area… really is a pretty dress.

  • anyone else think that was heidi klum at first glance?

  • filmcricket

OUT. Just because it’s good for Stella doesn’t make it actually good.

  • kcarb1025

  • lrhoff

Great look — “in” from my standpoint!

  • Caaro3

    OUT.  I hate “Stella McCartney”.

  • Lulu Lafurge

Sorry, but all I can see is that wrinkly side-boob thing. Out.

  • Hhhope

IN, but points off for dodgy make up, side boobage, and the fact that the model’s serving it up waaaaay bettah.

  • Love it. IN.

  • MissAnnieRN

The illusion netting is bothering me too.  At first I thought it was that infernal clear plastic shit vickie’s was using on bras (are they still?  I stopped shopping there after my 87th bra fell apart in record time).  Illusion netting is only a slight step up.

Nevertheless, if I ignore the illusion netting, I give this an IN for it’s chic/sleek-ness.  However, I’m already getting tired of this color blocking shaping trick and it hasn’t even been on trend for more than what, 4 months at most?

  • JDreesen

someone kindly hand me some Rid©, please, thank you.

  • cleep1000

The belt and the side-boob are ruining it. The make-up and hair aren’t that hot, either. OUT.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

OUT.  SIDE BOOB IS INEXCUSABLE IN A WELL DESIGNED DRESS.  Oh wait – it’s a Stella McCartney – therefore, the “well designed” part doesn’t apply.

  • The optical illusion is really lovely, but that gold belt looks a little Wonder Woman-ish.

  • Funkykatt

I don’t care for it. I must be the only person in the world who doesn’t like blue. I think it would be cute in another color (except for purple) but generally I don’t care much for Stella’s stuff either.

  • Taylor Coil

It looks like a first draft J. Mendel – I agree with your tweaks.
But honestly, I like it. In.

  • vmcdanie

In. There’s not a hint of side boob but I don’t feel like I’m looking at the AVN awards red carpets or anything. It’s a simple design but original.

  • CPK1

I am trying to put my dislike of stella’s clothes on one side and admire the parts of this dress I like. But, ugh! Illusion netting. Ack.

  • guest2visits

The more I look; the less Iike. ‘Nude’ side panels are tacky.

  • Monabel

    Out. Not good enough.

  • CarolinLA

Out.  She looks slutty when she turns to the side.  It mitigates the loveliness of the dress. But good for her – now she knows just how far is too far.

  • ccm800

OUT as hell. And that belt must have stuck to her back all night.

  • marilyn

OUT. Great concept, but side boobage drops it down to a slut dress.  The shape created by the blue against the white is amazing.   Why did Stella mess with that great idea?

  • jessieroset

Is that deodorant staining above her left boob or a reflection from the belt?  Don’t know how I saw anything with the yucky illusion netting and side boob.

  • nannypoo

Hate it. The front forms a sort of boob bag. Not at all flattering.

  • IN. I like Stella McCartney, most of the time. I think it’s a clever dress and Decker looks great in it.

  • demidaemon

OUT. I’m sorry, but sideboob is unforgivable.

  • OUT. Hate the cut-outs and netting and the awkward belt.

  • Martha Deutsch

aaaaaaah! side boob! out out out!

  • Lisa

Things I Love About Stella McCartney:

    1. Her dad and all his bands.
    2. Her perfume.
    3. Stella herself.

Things About Stella McCartney I’m Not Nuts About:

    1. Her clothes.

Stella McCartney Clothes I’ll Make An Exception For:

    1.  This dress.

  • megohd

No, you are not picking nits. Illusion netting has no place in fashion!

From a distance, IN. Close up, OUT!

  • benjamin478

Yup. Ruins the whole look for me. OUT

  • As I was looking at it, I was thinking “Side boob… illusion netting… WHY?!?” then saw that you said the exact same thing. So no, not nitpicking. You have eyes, what else could you say about that almost-chic dress?  OUT.

  • lalahartma

Out, side boob should be avoided, as should illusion netting!

  • ballerinawithagun

Out! Great dress, wrong woman. Is the illusion netting on the original dress or did they just add it for the swimsuit model???

  • Lilak

Yep, this is THE wrong gown for side boob . . .  Takes away from the gown, takes away from the lady wearing it.
And Miss Decker has already done herself no favors, looking like she’s still wearing her eye makeup from the day before and has scrubbed her poor face with a loofah.

  • butterflysunita

OUT for the side boob and also the hair and makeup.

  • serenitynow02

You keep on picking those nits.

Side boobage is always an OUT for me.

  • Sophie Collier

The visible invisible net cheapens the look, but I really really like the concept and the illusion the blue creates.  I will say “IN” because I think it is 90% fabulous.

  • plinkiedoodle

    So OUT<

  • aristida_girl

Out, side boob and the illusion netting are lame, as are her strange nude barbie lips…

  • a_liking

    IN! No nit picking today.

  • Bozhi

Out.  Side boob is never an in.

  • IN, apart from her crazy face make-up. also, with the way the model is styled, does it seem like stella made this dress aimed at olivia wilde to anyone else?

  • AWStevens

  • I like it on the model… not on her. OUT. It just isn’t your dress. Set it free and let Olivia Wilde find it.

  • Out, not only is there side boob but it looks like there are marks from the bra she was wearing before getting into this dress–either she or her stylist should have thought of that when she first got dressed in the morning.  It’s a chic dress but it’s not right on her.

  • IN. If I can think of a quick fix to the problem (instead of illusion netting, perhaps a chain or three?) then it’s an IN for me.

  • Sunshine16

Out, Stella should have carried the white up around the boob, for heavens sake!

  • Samantha Irene

In, she looks great – sideboob and all – though the belt from the side does make me shudder a bit.

  • ThaliaMenninger

She looks great from the front, but the side… And the back… Oh, dear. I don’t know what I think. She looks so great from the front! But the SIDES!!! I think I have to go with OUT.

  • librarygrrl64

A weak OUT. The sideboob is what takes it there (and ruins the look).

  • LambeeBaby

Funny, I looked at the photo prior to looking at your comment and thought “oh, is side boob in this season”. I still like it though, the dress, not the boob.

  • The netting makes her side boob look strangely wrinkly. It took me a minute to realize it was illusion netting. Out. I don’t need to stare that long at side boob.

  •  IN, but I wish the sideboob and net area was fitted/proportioned better.

  • Sweetvegan

IN! She looks gorgeous! Although as Joanna would say, “How can you wear a bra with this dress?!” No, this dress is for the woman without curves.

  • bitterk

    That dress is GORGE

  • TieDye64

IN, but the side boob is out.

  • frankystein123

I definitely think the dress would look better on women with smaller breasts. However, Ms. Decker here does look reasonably well put-together.

  • Diane

Love it except for the unfortunate side netting. There’s no reason to have that!
