Girl, That’s Not Your Dress: Kelly Ripa in Jason Wu

Posted on April 17, 2012

Sometimes, we really do think we’re doing God’s work here, kittens.  Because we look at things like this:

Kelly Ripa attends the 10th Annual TV Land Awards in NYC in a Jason Wu dress.

Jason Wu Spring 2012 Collection

And we realize that these wretched little creatures who populate our red carpets (as well as the wretched little creatures who help dress them) are apparently struck completely blind or somehow relieved of their common sense whenever they put on a free dress. And hey, who wouldn’t be? Because…free dress. You would think the stylists would have the balls to tell a celeb when something doesn’t work for them, but they’re on the payroll and thus, like all smart employees, their mouths remain shut lest unpleasant truths emerge from them.

Kelly, we’ll say it, because the silly queen who dressed you wouldn’t: This is not your dress. Pack it up and send it to Michelle Obama or some other much taller ladystar who can pull it off.

It wouldn’t look half as bad if they had cut down the proportions… A little bit of tailoring would have saved this look from being a disaster. But alas, right now it’s kind of a disaster.

    • Candigirl1968

Ah, yes.  And it’s too bad, because the color really works on her.

  • Funkykatt

At least she’s not in some dreadful Stella McCartney thing.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Patrick-Cleary/1201575213 Patrick Cleary

Are these free dresses only available in one size? That’s what I don’t understand. Why are designers happy with celebrities who look terrible in their creations, when an hour with a seamstress would fix most of the problems? Is it truly that bad press is as good or better than good press?

    • AuntieAnonny

I just assumed that they whore’d out the runway sample until it went flat. Pity this one fell as soon as it did.

    • Beardslee

I’ve wondered the same thing.  Why not have a sample made for wee little stars instead of making them wear something sized for a tall model?  Their clothes would look so much better.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

Not THAT bad – I see what you are saying about her being too short for the dress, but I think she looks a lot more soft and feminie here and the color is perfect for her!  It’s one of her better looks!

    • Patti Lever

I agree. Color is great on her and the style suits her, but it is a tad too long.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3JSTXMWWVZN2QNP2UEKJMTWD7U Isabel

Agree with you on the color. Because of her size, she could wear almost any style. But, not this one.

        • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Agreed.  The length of the skirt, and the length of the bodice, are too long for her short little torso.  Good color, though!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6PUVFQ7YCZZFZRIER6BEJ4HVYE Amye

And she’s grimacing, like she knows it’s not her dress.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=727168324 Maxine Horne

    It’s a bridesmaid’s dress……….

    • AuntieAnonny

I think it just looks that way on her, I really like this dress, but you need the height to make it work properly.

      • MaryMitch

         And a waist.

    • Kimbolina

      More like junior bridesmaid…

If the proportions were better, it might work.  But as is… ehhh.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=546029712 Bibiana Beardsley

Too bad because the color is gorgeous.

    • VioletFem

On the model yes, but on Kelly the color looks kind of dull. Although, this could be an effect of the lighting.

      • TheDivineMissAnn

I was wondering about the lighting.  I adore the color of the dress on the runway, but on Kelly it just looked washed out, like clothes that have been laundered too many times.

  • http://oshunanat.livejournal.com/ Carrie

Looks like a prom dress that was picked up because she waited too long and couldn’t find something better.

    • SapphoPoet

I posted the same prom comment–shoulda read through first!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=567947249 Christine Allen Sterne

I wore that dress to Junior Prom in 1993 with died to match shoes.  I was chic!

    • MoHub

Christine—I think you meant dyed, but died is so much more appropriate that I wouldn’t edit it if I were you.

  • Spicytomato1

I’m not sure any ladystar can pull that dropped waist off, tall, medium or short. It’s like the formal wear equivalent of the gangsta low jeans look, which I completely, utterly despise.

It’s kinda quirky/cute on the model at that shorter length but I think it’s a case where what looks good on the runway just doesn’t translate to real life. It looks like a bridesmaid dress I wore in the 80s (except mine wasn’t strapless). And why even do a dropped waist if you’re going to accent the real waist with a belt?

    • kimmeister

The thing is, it’s not supposed to be a dropped waist.  Look at how it fits on the model.  Kelly is just way too short-waisted for the dress.  The last picture is particularly tragic.

  • Laylalola

She thought the color made her tan look glorious shades of glowing glow and her waist tiny and a mile long, and up close it probably was very hard for a handler to do anything but agree because that much is true.

    • formerlyAnon

I would like this 100 times if I could. But I do have an irrational hate for Ms. Ripa, so that skews my view.

    • Kayceed

And now I am humming Spandau Ballet. How appropriate.

  • schadenfreudelicious

The only people who should be subjected to this dress are prom dates and groomsmen…

  • NDC_IPCentral

It would look stunning on the First Lady – great color for her, and her height would make the original, varied length hem of the skirt work.  However, it would be interesting to speculate on whether the waistline here would flatter Ms. Obama, short-waisted (as am I) lady that she is.  And of course, there would be the minefield of that narrow belt, since we have a body of evidence that Ms. Obama wears her belts a bit too high…..

  • http://twitter.com/TheRedZavodnik Ginger

EEK.  That dress looks like the unfortunate contraption I wore during the one misguided participation in a youth beauty pagent in my hometown…like 25 years ago.  It was tragic…I mean I was tragic…wait, no, uh….it sucked.

  • http://twitter.com/Danielavanrein Daniela van Rein

Let the dress flare out at the point were her belt is.. wear the belt a bit higher and it’s fixed.

    • TheDivineMissAnn

      This.

    • MoHub

Absolutely. The belt needs to be at the waist and cinched a bit tighter as it is on the model. Kelly has changed a figure-flattering bitted bodice into a shapeless tube.

      • Adriana_Paula

        Precisely.

  • formerlyAnon

Kelly Ripa is one of my irrational celebrity hates, even though she’s sometimes funny.

So it’s fine with me if her red carpet clothes are unflattering.

And I’m not sure she minds either. As long as she’s got her extreme thinness and painstakingly age-defying self-care on display, I think she’s perfectly good with it all.

    Yeah. Irrational, I told ya.

    • Ms_Flyover

Loathe – mostly irrationally, but partially based on the fact that she was featured on the cover of self magazine and proceeded to talk about behavior that reinforced that women must torture themselves to meet some externally determined ideal.

  • SapphoPoet

She looks like she’s going to prom.

  • http://www.what-the-frock.com Dana WhatTheFrock

I don’t think it’s that bad. The color is lovely, and the fit isn’t ideal but it’s not terrible. I’ve seen worse.

  • http://dentsdelait.tumblr.com/ Nancy Marion

You’d think she’d have a more convincing fake smile after so many years on TV, no?

  • 3boysful

Why does the torso on Kelly’s dress look so much longer than on the (presumably) Amazonian model?  I don’t think it’s simply because she’s too short, b/c it looks like it’s hitting her at about the same spot as on the model?

    • MilaXX

Because Kelly is flat chested and has no curves.

      • TheDivineMissAnn

My thought too when I was looking at Kelly -vs- the model.  You need an actual shape to wear that dress.

      • MissAnnieRN

as a flat chested woman, I prefer more flattering terms such as “small busted”  haha.

  • ElitheMonkey

There’s something very different looking about the hem of the two dresses. Like, one is soft and flowy and the other has a lead lining. That poor dress, it has a sad because of who’s wearing it.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_64HSRZWCSJ5RBFGCWDLFQOICYM G

She is so pretty, but she has morphed into a pre-pubescent boy… and yes, M O would look amazing in this!

    • guestela

Yes, exactly! I saw her on TV the other day at the gym (sound off) and all I could think was, “she looks like a 6-year-old — huge head, teeny narrow body.”

What’s worse to my mind is that the way she dresses, she looks like she’s *trying* to look like a 6-year-old.

  • PastryGoddess

That is some scrolldown fug for sure.  I was so sure that you guys were being mean…you were not, that’s for sure

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

      Yes scrolldown fug indeed.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

      Yes scrolldown fug indeed.

  • MilaXX

YEESH! She far to tiny and small chested to wear this. While it looks great on the model, it looks like a cheap prom dress on Kelly. Girl set that dress free!

  • EEKstl

It looks like she’s 8 and trying on her mother’s dress.

  • BazoDee

Ew – nope. Not for her and quite frankly it sort of looks like a bridesmaids dress off the runway. The hip seam looks off to me -the fabric is too stiff for that many gathers. And yes the proportions are dreadful and the shoes weigh it down.

  • GorgeousThings

Whenever I see (or even worse, hear) Kelly Ripa, I just want to haul off and smack her. I don’t know why – she’s like nails on chalkboard to me. And here’ she’s nails on chalkboard playing dress-up in mommy’s good dress.

Hold still a second, Kelly…. *smack*
    There, that’s better.

    • mjude

i feel the same way. why is that?

    • formerlyAnon

Wow, you’re so actualized and initiative-taking! Obviously primed for living life to the full. You fill me with admiration and respect.

All I do when exposed to Ms. Ripa is seethe with inchoate loathing and exponentially burgeoning irritation. Sometimes I wonder how her co-hosts keep from hauling off and smacking her, though.

ETA: And I know I’m irrational. Just because I think she exudes the aura of “trying too hard to meet all the culturally appropriate stereotypes and please everybody,” with a whiff of “pathetic self-congratulation” when she feels she’s achieved her goal of pleasing the immediate audience, is not a good reason to hate someone I’ve never met who is good at her job, works for good causes and sometimes makes me laugh.

Nice bridesmaid’s dress that Kathie Lee is wearing there. In 1985.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

    I don’t think is Shelley O’s dress either. It’s a repurposed bridesmaid’s dress from 1989.

  • thanswife

This looks like the Oscar de la Renta dress from Sex and the City that the Russian bought for Carrie. Hers was pink.

  • janetjb

She needs a dress that plays up her lean athletic body.

the dress is not as bad as that horrendous grin she’s trying to pass off as a smile.

  • Judy_J

    Awful, just awful.

  • mom2ab

On a positive note she appears to have gained a pound and no longer looks like a skeleton.

  • nannypoo

She shouldn’t need a stylist to tell her this dress is a bad idea. A mirror is all it takes. And I’m pretty sure Michelle Obama would have the good taste to reject it, too. I could maybe see it on ….. well, no one.

  • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Bet Kristin Davis is pissed that Kelly took her dress.

  • quiltrx

It looks nice on the model…but it looks like a second-hand prom dress on Kelly.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1374511853 Sara Yungwirth

Oh golly. I saw the thumbnail where it only showed from the waist up and thought “Oh well that’s not that bad”…

and then I saw the actual picture. Oh golly, that skirt…

  • http://twitter.com/annmartina Ann Harste

She’s doing the Morgan Fairchild wrinkless smile too

    • kimmeister

Ah, so THAT’S what’s up with that smile!

On an unrelated note, she is sort of looking like Jane Krakowski here, no?

      • charlotte

Totally, glad you are seeing that, too.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ValTayl Valerie Taylor

The color’s great on her, but it looks like she’s playing dress up in mommy’s closet.

  • Snailstsichr

Oh ugh – this is the wrong blue to set off her eyes and the dress swallowed her waistline. I don’t pay much attention to Ms Ripa, but I cannot fathom that she doesn’t work hard to have a lovely little waistline.

  • BeeBeauNYC

This would go great in a “How to look 4′ Tall Guide”.

  • Rebecca Johnson

Her face says “I’m Kelly Ripa and I’m regretting this choice.”

    • rowsella

I thought her face was saying  “CCccan’t Momomoove”

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/J2VE4NE2FY2BP4QD2XOYKJGLPI Laura

Yup. Too long, too poofy. She’s got such a fit petite figure that this kind of thing just looks like a tent on her.  That belt is weird. Do not like.

  • marilyn

It is also too long waisted on her.  The proportions are completely off.  Good color for her, though.

    • gabyripple

This. What I find strange is that it has totally different proportions on the model, to the point of almost looking like a completely different dress.

  • lrhoff

It looks as if she’s playing dress-up in her mommy’s closet…..beautiful color, though.

  • IAmJ

I honestly don’t know if anyone should be wearing this dress on the red carpet. I guess it all depends how inexpensive you’re willing to look.

  • Louise Bryan

My impression of Jason Wu is that he thinks women stop aging at about 20.  This dress looks too youthful on Ms. Ripa, besides being too long.  Actually, I think the neckline is nice, but when I scrolled down and saw the skirt, I couldn’t help snorting.

  • guest2visits

O.I. Sincerely disagree. She looks pretty wonderful; as usual. Both the color and the difficult design of this dress
make it almost impossible for ANYONE to carry off. But I think a size 0 pixie like Kelly has done the job.

    It fits beautifully, it’s not falling down on her, the shoes are great, she’s looking less washed out than usual;
what more do you want ? (please Kelly; NO more tats; everyone,- no more tats please.)

  • http://katelorenzdesign.com Kate Lorenz

Thank GOD you posted this.  I saw this on another site and honestly, I think this might be a ‘worst look ever’ for me.  Shiny, bulky, too simple, and desperately begging for alteration…and she has no idea!  No idea.  Seeing the runway picture helped me understand the problem, but still – how a well paid beauty team let this happen is beyond me.  Even at the proper height, had it been altered or worn by a tall ladystar, it’s still a basic corset with a bulky waist in an ugly color.  Fin.

  • CarolinLA

Put a bow on the back and that’s what I wore in my sister’s wedding.

  • http://www.djplaw.com/ Tadiana

I think you need to be taller AND 20 or 25 years younger than Kelly to make this dress work.  It’s crying out “teen starlet” to me.

  • unbornfawn

That dress lost a lot in translation. The color is much better on the model and the skirt is fuller and more fun. On Kelley it looks dull and droopy. It also looks like she is wearing the prom dress she didn’t get to wear in the 80′s.  It’s all wrong.

  • prettybigkitty

This snow white craze is getting out of hand.  Not only bad movies, but now bad dresses.

Wow, I didn’t know Kelly Ripa was only 3′ tall!  That, or her femurs were surgically removed.

that is SO not her dress! It’s not just it’s too long but the style is just wrong for her.

    • luciaphile

I used to like her back in the day when she was a teen actress on All My Children. She looked normal back then…I don’t mind this look from the top half up, but the bottom is totally late 80s prom.

  • http://twitter.com/suryasnair suryasnair

And also please dont color your skin, hair and lips the same. PLEASE.

  • FashionShowAtLunch

    NOOOOOOOOOO.

  • http://twitter.com/ThisIsNotEmber John Watson

the only issue i see is that its a tad long, but other than that i really dont think she looks bad. She looks really lovely in my opinion.

  • KathKo

Well… It’s a nice color for her, but… Does she looks dwarfed by that dress !
And it looks so much stiffer on her than on the model.
    Bad idea…

  • PeaceBang

That dropped waist is a disaster on her but the dress is really cute on the model. More unflattering though, is the clenched teeth face. What is that all about? I also tire of the BEACHY WAVES. Enough with the BEACHY WAVES. Also the matching skin, hair and lips. I am a very Bitter Kitten today.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=610791985 Aniela Marie Perry

I can’t believe that’s the same dress as the one in the runway shot. Wow, she looks goofy in that.

  • TheOtherChristina

Shame, because if it fit her properly I think it would be a great dress for her.

In other news, I think she might be fixing to bite the cameraman.

  • http://twitter.com/MandySCG MandyJane

The skirt just swallows her, makes her look 4ft tall…. unless she is 4ft tall, lol.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_YAMNQMUGFM4NNSPAQLZRODSD5I Angela

I got her autograph at an AMC event years ago, and I was stunned! She truly is no bigger than a Barbie doll…and just as pretty, if you like that sort of thing (blond hair, blond teeth, blond personality). She was sweet and accommodating to a VERY long line…

  • http://twitter.com/GaraStJames Gara St. James

Color is the only good thing about this, it’s very flattering to her. The dress itself, though, is a big old mess on her. She’s too short to wear that length, and she doesn’t have much of a waist, and the belt only draws attention to her boyish build.

  • altalinda

Interesting.  I must be flunking TLo Academy, I like it on her.

  • http://heartprintandstyle.blogspot.com Vivi N

Or give it to someone who has a shape.

  • Dagney

OR she could send it back to a prom in 1987 where it belongs.

  • MissAnnieRN

What in the Bridesmaid hell??  P.S. Kelly – dropped waists are not your friend.  P.S.S.  How DO you get your arms to look like that?  I’m jealous.  better luck next time. xoxo

  • snarkykitten

it looks like a bridesmaid dress. boring!

  • TieDye64

The proportions are terrible, but the color looks great with her spray tan.

  • BarbaraNovak

Don’t think she’d wear it, but I’d love to see this on Robin Roberts.

  • sashaychante

The dress is total bridesmaid.  Kelly is too short for this dress.  Of all the dresses she has access to, why this one?

  • Mexxoo

Crazy, after seeing so many dresses recently where the bodice part is WAY to short for the woman wearing it, to see Kelly wearing something where the bodice part (I’m not talking about the dropped waist, I’m talking about the part from the ribbon on up) is way too long.  Then again, Kelly is petite (the only one who makes Kelly look normal-sized is Kristin Chenoweth, lol).

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

Why do they look like 2 completely different shades of blue?  Or are they different versions of the same dress?

    Toddlers and Tiaras, right?

  • Vanessak69

Missing the crown of thorns realness.

  • Lina_bee

Good lord, this would have been appropriate for my 7th grade formal, back in the mid-80s. This woman is not twelve! Why is she dressing like it?

  • Sophie Collier

Proportions are soooooo off.  Don’t they offer free tailoring with the free dresses?  So sad, if it had been fitted right, it would have been awesome on her.

  • http://profiles.google.com/phyllis.craine Phyllis Craine

She really needs to update that hairstyle.  Welcome to the 90′s Kelly!

  • ccm800

if it fit her it would look great. It surely does NOT fit her.
