Florence Welch in Tadashi Shoji

Posted on April 24, 2012

Okay, okay. We’ve been harsh on Flo for either stepping out in something completely cracktastic or stepping out in something that made her look 30 years older than her age and made her seem a little grandiose and humorless.

But can we all agree that this is at least a step in the right direction?

Florence Welch attends Florence + The Machine Las Vegas Afterparty Celebrating the “Ceremonials” Tour in a Tadashi Shoji Fall 2012 gown.

Tadashi Shoji Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Shena Moulton

Sure, it’s still a bit grandiose for a Vegas post-tour after-party, but it’s at least pretty, right? And even though she still looks like she could use an IV hookup of liquid anti-depressants, she does look kind of soft and kind of near her actual age, yes?

Baby steps, people. It’s your duty to encourage confused celebrities when they get something a little right. They’re like Tinkerbell that way. You have to keep clapping.

  • look at her cute little figure. who knew!? *clap clap clap*

  • Great dress and good color.

And like it or not, Flo is going to look 40 when she’s 25, and 40 when she’s 65 (I’m speculating, anyway).

    • JillSpill

I agree – I just think her features make her look more mature than her age.  But in probably in 20 years we’ll be saying “Damn doesn’t she ever age?”

    • Sobaika Mirza

Agreed. Her height/body type and features would never read young, no matter what. Kind of like Jon Hamm. I can’t imagine him ever looking 16.

    • sweetestsith

Agreed. I’m in the same boat with the droopy eyes, and the unfortunately placed wrinkle below the cheek. Smiling would help her out, but some people just don’t get lucky in the young & fresh faced department. Alas!

      • slightlybitterkitten

I kind of think that in person, she’s probably super pretty.  Stephen Colbert actually kind of seemed a bit speechless in her presence.  I think her bone structure just makes for bad photographs… IMHO.

      •  Please restrict comments to clothes, hair and makeup and not an assessment of her physical features.

        • sweetestsith

Apologies! I’ll be more careful in the future.

      • enchanted216

Wrinkle?  Wow.  I’m oddly offended by you saying that.

        • sweetestsith

I posted the comment off hand, and really didn’t mean anything negative by it. Sorry it came off wrong and was generally inappropriate for this website.

  • Ceur

I think someone finally taught her the word ‘highlighter’. She looks comparatively amazing.

  • Paigealicious

She looks 35, not 45, so that’s an improvement. Do like the dress and color.

  • SusiePamudji

That dress is gorgeous and she looks gorgeous in it. Perfect color combo.

    • B+ -still not there!
      You’ll do better next time

  • JasmineAM

The dress is great, but her eye makeup makes her look sick.

    • kimmeister

The eyeshadow is the exact shade of her hair!

  • halleygee

Careful, looks like she’s shooting daggers at you, TLo!

    • TheOriginalLulu

Yeah, she’s thinking, “I swear If those bitches have something negative to say about THIS…”

  • funkypeanut

Great color and shape for her, but it could be improved by cutting off the bottom three tiers.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

      My thoughts exactly!

  • erinbinek

MUCH better!  Normally, her style gives me an eye twitch, but this I can get behind.

  • You have to keep clapping! ROFL  I love this dress, but it would have actually looked better if chopped off at the knee although I suppose that would make it too similar to M. Suvari’s ?

  • JMansm

I’m actually enthusiastic about this one. I LOVE that dress (even more than the red Tadashi Shoji that was on Mena Suvari in yesterday’s post) and I think it’s pretty much the most suitable dress for her that I’ve seen (plus, redheads look GREAT in greys).

  • MilaXX

I definitely like her hair and makeup better. If we hadn’t seen Mena looking positively radiant in this in red, I’d like it more. As it is I can’t help but wish she removed a few ruffles as well. I think I’m tired of seeing her in gowns. I think she needs to show some leg.

  • TieDye64

The color is very flattering on her, though it sure looks more like fall/winter to me. Not really a criticism. Don’t hurt me, girl.

  • The green and maxi- version of that dress that got Mena Suvari a WERQ. It would have been cuter if it was shorter – but Flo never wears short does she? The maxi version is a little unrelieved. Also, I suspect this dress might look better in motion than it does when someone is posing but that’s no one’s fault.

  • onyxkatze

It’s a fabulous dress for her, so why does she look so pissed off?

  • MitchellGilburne

Anyone else think she looks a bit like Catelyn Stark here?

    • Yeah and equally disturbed by recent events apparently.

    • calimon

She always struck me as a reincarnation of Vanessa Redgrave in Camelot (1967).

  • Judy_J

I’m clapping.  This is the best I’ve seen her look.  Great dress (I’d kind of like to see a version that has the last 3 tiers removed), and she does look much closer to her actual age.  She’s on the right path.

    • TheDivineMissAnn

Take a look at the Mena Suvari post from yesterday.  It’s a shorter version of the dress, albeit in red.

      • Judy_J

Oh, yes.  I like the red version as well.  The skirt seems a bit more flared in that incarnation.  Both dresses are beautiful.

  • butterflysunita

Yes, it’s a step in the right direction.  Great color on her–brings out the green in her eyes.

    • 3boysful

Was just about to type that!

  • RebeccaKW

I think she looks great in this dress.  Her hair looks washed and brushed and the bangs are soft.  I don’t agree with the eyeshadow shade, I think it’s making her look even more tired.  But she does seem LESS tired than she has been.

  • SewingSiren

Oh now. I thought the red one that the cute little blonde, that I always think is going to be Mira Sorvino, had shorted to show off her skinned knee was cute, but this one is fabulous. A shame that they both would look even more fabulous in the fall or winter where they belong.

  • SpcilK

Ummm, I guess it’s an upgrade. I don’t love the prarie look on her.

  • She looks great.  Finally her facial features are a bit softer and she looks really good in that dress.  I would say this is more like a leap in the right direction for her.

  • TheOriginalLulu

“You have to keep clapping”. LMAO
Yes, a definite step in the right direction. The color works beautifully with her hair/eyes/skin. Now if she could only bring herself to smile…

  • marilyn

Good colors for her.  Great hair and makeup.  Good dress choice. Kudos.

  • Anathema_Device

Yes, much better! She ditched that awful lipstick shade she was wearing for a while there. I like her hair pulled back. The dress looks great on her. Totally in her wheelhouse, but definitely pretty on her.

  • She looks AMAZING.

  • The dress color goes great with her hair and skin colors. Black is so over powering and neutral washes her out. ::clap clap::

  • asciident

It’d be nice if she didn’t look sleepy and/or pissed off, but at least the dress is pretty.

  • Clap clap clap clap…

Pretty dress, maybe the color isn’t spot-on, but I still like it.

  • Pants_are_a_must

That dress is FAB. The make up isn’t, but hello bangs! Nice to see you back!

  • Better hair color, please.

I love the dress though. Definitely a step up.

  • Beautiful dress, and she finally did something with her hair.

  • Sara__B

I saw a photo of woebegone Flo in this dress and she was actually SMILING! I was enchanted. I don’t like it as much paired with her usual wan and consumptive expression, but it’s still a great dress.

  • PeggyOC

I want to baby step on the hem of this and pull out about three layers of ruffles, leaving it cocktail length.  Then this would be a really cute dress.

  • colleenjanel

I love this dress, and most of that TS collection, but I hope that this doesn’t become the next Stella McCartney dress … in other words, some variation shows up on every.single.red.carpet.

  • hughman

Miss Brodie is not fooled by your use of quarter-hours.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

she looks a lot like chloë sevigny.

the dress is pretty great–it’s from the same collection as mena suvari’s yesterday, right? but she looks so much better when she doesnt feel she has to look serious, not to mention that serious = miserable.

  • Lovely!

  • One of my favourite dresses from my favourite NYFW collection. Needed red lips and some vintage jewelry. And the wearer to be awake.

  • BrooklynBomber

I kind of love this dress, though I prefer the version we saw yesterday because this color’s kind of eh. Green doesn’t always look good on redheads–she looks washed out. On the model it looks turquoise; I wonder if that’s lighting or a different color. Turquoise would’ve been better on Flo.

  • SapphoPoet

    Gorgeous color on her.

  • Judy_S

Clap clap. But I always like her anyway. Maybe it’s that I’m so old I cheer for an older woman who looks so young, even if she really is so young. If that makes sense.

CAN’T. STAND. HER.  Someone get the anti-depressants, STAT!  It is part of the job of celebrity to smile for your adoring public, isn’t it??
    Lovely dress though.

  • bloggertobenamedlater

She looks pretty which is a huge improvement from her previous incarnations as my grandmother’s bridge partner. I still think with her height and striking looks, she should just aim for fierce with clean, modern lines a la Tilda.

  • poggi

I am usually happy when wearing a new fabulous dress, and my dresses are less fabulous and substantially less free.  Despite her serious/dour expression, she looks good.

  • TheDivineMissAnn

I like it better in the red like Mena Suvari wore in yesterday’s post.  Long or short, red or green, it is a pretty dress.
    Flo looks fab!

  • janetjb

The color is very nice on her, but it looks too wintery for Las Vegas in April.

  • CatherineRhodes

I look she looks terrific. Love the dress!

Would it kill you to put on a little lipstick, Flo?

  • Nariya

The woman needs a week-long nap.

  • Oh we’re ALMOST there.  If only it stopped at the knee, but I’ll take what I can get.  Maybe in the next picture she’ll smile just a tad.

  • Kayceed

A clean silhouette serves that brocade well. The colors are really nice on her. But I would have saved it for October.

  • another_laura

This has got to be a longer, in-green version of the dress that a starlet was given a WERQ for, yes?  I love this dress and it works great with her hair and complexion.  Let the fabric do the work, honey.

  • I actually love that she dresses for herself. It’s like that dress was designed with her in mind!

  • Jennifer L.

The dress looks great on her – she’s lanky enough to pull off tiered lace. Don’t care for the librarian hair though.

  • kikisayshi

All she needs is a parasol and a giant hat.

  • I’d say more than just a step in the right direction.  This look is right in her wheelhouse, but in a fantastic way rather than slightly loopy.

  • PeaceBang

I’m just so irritated by the whole neckline of this dress. It’s better in green that it is in red, and I love it at this length, but she still looks morose and stiff to me. If the hair and make-up were pumped up a bit she could be Glamorously Melancholic Approaching Tragic, so she needs to keep at it.

  • She just doesn’t look happy in formal wear.  Her outfit at Coachella was pretty silly, but she looked luminous.  Her smile has massive star power, I wish she’d unleash it more often.

  • oohsparkley!

I’m clapping!  I love her no matter what she’s wearing.  She’s an original.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I like the shorter length that Mena Suvari was wearing in a previous post.  Love this color on Flo,and her makeup is good, but she looks just miserable.  I agree that she should have her hair up for the gorgeous dress, but this style is so “just got out of spin class and I can’t do a thing with it!”.

  • mjude

    i really like it.

  • tsid2012

Ok, I’ll say she looks better.  Marginally.  I know I will get in trouble here but she still looks very “man in drag” to me most of the time.  However, I would love to see that dress on Shelly O. Sleeveless, of course.

  • charlotte

I like the dress, but I’d prefer a shorter version of it. This makes her look seven feet tall. I know she is tall, but not that tall.

  • guest2visits

Better. But how did the dress suddenly get so drab. It’s a nice subtle blue on the model.
And it’s a dreary artificial looking green on Florence.

  • NatalieD28

I don’t know if I’d like this on almost anyone else, but I think it looks fantastic on her (dare I say, better than on the runway as well?!). It definitely looks like a step in the right direction! Clap clap!!

  • Love that color on her.

Not such a fan of the layer cake dress, but hey, it’s a little less Stevie Nicks than normal,
    and that’s good.

  • Oddly pre-Raphaelite. I love the wallpaper effect–it’s like she leaned against a wall, they papered over her, and she walked away unfazed. Only Florence could make that work.

  • Hands down my favorite look of hers, ever. When in doubt, redheads (I am one!), go green! So long as you pick the right shade, it almost never fails.

  • She always looks like she doesn’t give a damn and a I love that about her.

  • BeeBeauNYC

Wow, this is the first outfit that I’ve ever seen her in that works for her — it’s a nice color on her, and her makeup isn’t harsh, and her hair is actually under control.  Keep it up, Flo!

  • MK03

  • MzzPants

Yes, a healthy step forward.  It’s a gorgeous gown.  Girl needs to smile.

  • portlandmermaid

gorgeous dress needs a gorgeous smile. She looks tired and pissed off, like she’d rather be wearing her ratty old bathrobe.

  • I saw this and was expecting you guys to give her a WERQ for this.  Definitely a step in the right direction for her.

  • nannypoo

This is the best I have ever seen her look. She has actual color in her face, and her hairstyle gives her usually gloomy face a big lift. Also I think the dress is pretty fabulous.

  • jilly_d

love the color, love the neckline, love the sleeves, love the hair.  not crazy about the tiers but I’ll take it!  Go, Flo!

  • Definitely a step in the right direction, but the makeup is pretty bad…

  • enchanted216

I’m ok with the dress.  Obviously, this is the look she likes, and it suits her sensibilities.  I think if she were to let down the hair, she would look more youthful and happy…..?

  • sagecreek

That’s a good start! Would it kill her to put on some rocking earrings? I think not. I think not.

  • moja31

she should slap her makeup artist, but other than that she looks great.

  • kingderella

never agreed with most of the flo criticism, i like most of her looks.
this one is just ok. love the upper half but kinda hate the lamp-shade/wedding-cake lower half.

  • Lisa

MUCH better!  The dress and the hair look great.

  • alyce1213

This is somewhat better than the red/black incarnation, but what is up with her?  Must she always look so ennui-ish, like she’s doing everyone a big fat favor by putting on some clothes and showing up?  Her hair, as usual, is abysmal.

  • quiltrx

This dress is SO Flo.  I love it, and she looks so pretty.  Nice job toning back the Miss Havisham makeup.

And Flo, sweetheart?  You are a vocal GODDESS, and we bow at your feet.  You can SMILE now, m’kay?

  • bellafigura1

I dunno.  OK, it’s not terrible.  But she looks like she’s doing some major fronting.  She just looks like … well, not herself.

  • FlamingJune1967

I adore this dress!  As a fellow ginger, I appreciate the color combination, and I also think it would look flattering on a variety of figures.  I’d love to get my hands on this to wear to my daughter’s wedding next year.  Oops!  does that automatically qualify it as mature?

    • Hell no. It automatically qualifies you as having excellent taste.

    • sleah_in_norcal

uh-oh.. it’s the mother of the bride curse.  watch out for the tangerine duchess!

  • Pennymac

    Progress! (But not perfection)

  • Sophie Collier

Yes, very good!  You look lovely! (Psst!  TLo!  Sneak up behind her and take off about four of those tiers.)

  • judybrowni

It might help if she had feet.

  • If only she’d cut that dress off at one of its tiers mid-calf or something. Maybe a glimpse of shoe. idk! She’s lovely, though.

  • Love the dress on her, I just wish she had better eye makeup.

  • plinkiedoodle

Sister wife clap clap clap Sister wife….

  • Jo Miller

I would like to see Florence in that dress minus the bottom three tiers. This is an improvement over the granny dresses.

  • crash1212

I think she looks fab. I love that dress and she’s totally rockin’ it.

  • I think this is really pretty on her!

  • minnye

Totally fab, although here we go again with season inappropriateness. Not sure if that is a real word.

  • I think it suits her to a T and is really pretty.

  • sleah_in_norcal

absolutely 100% perfect!  i would wear this in a hot second.

  • The makeup went all pink to contrast all the green, but I’d give this a werq! Loving all the finger bling, looks like Flo’s stuff rather than a stylist or expensive loan.

  • Cathy S

I’m not crazy about the neckline but otherwise I love it and I think it looks great on her.

  • bitterk

    Doilies and more doilies

  • I love it, the color totally suits her and the lace is beautiful and rich looking.  It’s a WERQ for me 🙂  I want…

  • I have never really noticed that she looks a lot like Chloe Sevigny. Do others see this ? Maybe Florence is just a CS alter ego. Florence likes grandiose capes, tea stained romantic dresses, crazy printed suits, and her dramatic red hair and porcelain skin. Florence spends most of her time making wonderful music and acting as if she were staring in her own opera

  • ballerinawithagun

  • I am okay with people commenting on Florence’s style.  However, I think the whole “liquid anti-depressants” was below the belt being a person who is fighting depression and Florence has also admitted to struggling with it.  I like the humor of this blog but there are somethings that are best not joked about.
As far as the dress goes I really like it on her but I wish she paired it with a lighter shade of red hair. Personally I love that Florence does not stick to the “rules” for her age and just wears what she likes. As she once said, “Being normal is overrated.” 😉

  • Tatiana Luján

Red eyeshadow isn’t good on anyone’s face. Girl, you don’t have to match your eyeshadow to your hair. In fact, you must not do that.
