Fall 2012 Trends: Winter White

Posted on April 09, 2012

Rachel Zoe

Yes, the crocus is blooming, but let’s cast our fashion minds forward to the next time the weather turns cold and the leaves go out in a blaze of glory. Winter whites, darlings: cool, creamy, and sophisticated, they’re a defiant shot of light in the midst of a long, dark season.

3.1 Phillip Lim, Aganovich, Alexander Wang

Antonio Berardi, Blumarine, Carmen Marc Valvo

Chanel, Christian Siriano, Dennis Basso

Derek Lam, Doo. Ri, Elena Miro

Emilio Pucci, J. Mendel, Paco Rabanne

Peter Som, Prabal Gurung, Proenza Schouler

Reed Krakoff, Valentino, Yigal Azrouël

We’re not bothering with a “YEA or NAY” vote on this one. The very idea is absurd; as if to ask, “The Little Black Dress: YEA or NAY?” Winter white is always a YEA, no question about it. Instead it’s time for you to whip out your imaginary Gold Cards and do some imaginary shopping. May we suggest the Rachel Zoe? Or that Blumarine jacket, which is fierce as shit? Or perhaps that crisp, structured Valentino coat? We’ll hold your purse. Go try it on.

I don’t see why it has to be just a winter trend. I love all white regardless of season as long as I have a stain blotter with me and a huge fashionable bib.

      • http://twitter.com/herong Heron

You don’t have those with you where ever you go?

        Forever alone.

      • Derek_anny

Because white is the color of snow, silly.  Don’t you know colors are all assigned to the appropriate season and/or holiday?  That to wear them out of season is a horrible, horrible fashion crime?

    • SewingSiren

I love winter white so, YEA!
Although I must admit that several of these look much more like “Spring White”.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

I’ll take the entire Christian Siriano ensemble for everday, the Rachel Zoe fur hood for dress-up, the Proenza Schouler coat as wall-art, and I am willing to let Rihanna have the Carmen Marc Valvo on the condition that she stop releasing albums. Otherwise it’s going to Zoe Saldana.

      • http://www.facebook.com/charlotte.horseman Charlotte Horseman

I would LUV to hide in that Rachel Zoe fur hood… with just my insanely long eyelashes winking out.

    • crash1212

In my next life, I shall be the type who can wear Winter White and not look like a giant blobby ghost and/or be covered in schmutz as soon as I leave my room.

      • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Me too. I had one emotionally scarring lady-incident with white shorts as a 13 year old which has firmly put me off white, ivory and ecru for this lifetime.

        • alyce1213

OMG you had to remind me?
I have gone back to whites, but with full respect and precautions for Mother Nature.

      • Terrie_S

This. That much white makes my already pale self look down right anemic and sickly. I have no desire to wear a color that causes people to wonder if I’m about to pass out.

Valentino coat ! I love this kind of coats, although I don’t usually take them white and  with haute-couture feeling like this one. So yeah, it would totally be me if I was to wear haute-couture.

    • greatscoutm

I love the Antonio Berardi.  Dreamy.

    • Judy_J

Love winter white.  So cool and sophisticated.  Elegant.  And that Antonio Berardi would make a beautiful wedding gown.

    • http://eclectictsunami.blogspot.com/ Cassie

I can’t wait to see that Prabal Gurung on Rooney Mara. She might want to tone down the hip wings, though.

And I COVET the Christian Siriano coat and the Balmain jacket. That whole 3.1 Philip Lim ensemble is pretty great, too, even if I could never pull it off.

    • IMNAngryLiberal

Here in the lovely PNW, winter means rain, more rain, still more rain and mud.  Winter white will always be a NAY at my house.

    • Merridith Kristoffersen

      Blumarine and Dennis Basso!

    • ringthing

I’ll take the Christian Siriano for 500, Alex (and wouldn’t that be great?) And throw in the Chanel shoes.

    • ChiKat67

I’m loving the Christian Siriano and I’m sure we’ll be seeing JLo in the Carmen Marc Valvo.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I want the Alexander Wang cocktail dress (with opera gloves!) topped by the Dennis Basso (faux) fur.  My Amex is now in total flames!

    • Terence Ng

Pencillers and colorists for every X-Men title: Please reference these clothes every time you draw Emma Frost in civilian wear from now on. Thank you.

      • Amy Ellinger

yes, yes, a bazillion times yes.  I could accept January jones reprising the role if she wore things like this in the films.

What did they do to that poor Chanel model’s eyebrows?

      • PeaceBang

There you have the second appearance of the Scary Posh Spice eyebrows.

    • PeaceBang

Love the Derek Lam. That’s how I would dress if I was a rich, tall, thin girl.

    • j_anson

      Oh. White. Goody.

    • kimmeister

So much to love here, but I had to pick just one, I’d go with the Elena Miro.

    • Stubenville

Aaah yes; nothing says “winter” like short, white and gauzey fabric. Should we expect black for summer next?

    • marilyn

The last row of models look like nurses or orderlies.

    • MilaXX

Since we’re using imaginary gold and black cards I’ll take the Derek Lam sweater and the entire Elena Miro outfit. While I’m at it, toss in the Reed Krakoff dress for my causal days.

    • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

I’m going to take the Elena Miro, because it’s the only one available in my (plus) size.

    • butterflysunita

Looks lovely.  But I have to admit my first thought was of the astronomical drycleaning bills.

    • nancylee61

I always thought winter white was that creamier white that only a few of the designers used. And are they all lemmings??? Why do they all do the same thing?

And Zoe’s fur – she is an silly ninny and I hate her use of fur.

      • alyce1213

        What you said about Zoe.

        And yes, lemmings.

    • ccm800

just getting warm here –   all these bitches can freeze – NOT thinking about it.

    • ccm800

however chanel shoes look like her feet are on backwards.

      • alyce1213

Great observation.  How did I miss that?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=678337501 Carla Axtman

Dear Rachel Zoe: If I wanted to dress like an Eskimo, I’d live in Alaska. #SoMuchWrong

    • http://twitter.com/jaythenerdkid Aaminah Khan

I need more white in my wardrobe.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

but it’s all so similar, each to each. couldve mostly been designed by the same person or, rather, the same team of persons. except, maybe, for the massive bunches of hang tags on the hips of the peter som. which make no sense at all, really, particularly in the context of his semi-magnificent glow in the dark sandals, which are one of the things i like best here. only they’d be better w/ platforms, just like everything else. ie: the dennis basso shoes.

other than those, i think what i like best is the blumarine, that or the j mendel. the doo.ri isnt bad either. then again, none of it’s bad. it just doesnt stray into the land of phenomenal.

    • snarkykitten

White is always NAY to me.

    • DCSheehan

I would use my card pay for all these gorge clothes so all the girl kittens can wear whatever they want! Because these clothes deserve a home with women who love them.

    • inprovo

I am not versed in the ways of fashion.  Is the thinking behind fashion seasons really that people are going to be wearing these things in six months?  Won’t there be something that’s more fashionable at the time than what’s being touted now as what will be fashionable next winter?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2P2ANLRZ6YAVGONA36I2AQJYGI VicD

Paging Tilda Swinton.  Your lookbook has arrived.

    • http://needtherapy.tumblr.com/ skadi1

the models all look fine, but i look wretched in winter white, so i will pass on looking slightly dingy this year.

    • http://korilian.livejournal.com/ korilian

I say the Nay! I have no desire to look like a washed out corps, thank you very much.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=617249824 Dawn Sinclair

It’s out if you’ve got a three year old though

    • TheAutisticStepmom

I need a cape.  It’s missing from my wardrobe.

    • KuriousKat

I love the creamy winter whites and what they do for my complexion, having one of those complexions that can’t handle a crisper summer white at all. Definitely a “yea” for me.

    • Diane_G

I love most of these, but alas, probably won’t be able to rock them because I’ll have a messy baby in my arms by then. I LOVE that Christian Siriano trench. I’d wear that for the first-night-by-myself outing. And that Blumarine outfit..sans ridiculous shoes.

    • EEKstl

I’ll take the Blumarine and Proenza Schouler jackets and that Carmen Marc Volvo gown…oh, and that Derek Lam ensemble. That should do it: Just wrap ‘em, I’ll take them with.

    • alyce1213

The Philip Lim suit and the Siriano Trench (not to be confused with the Mariana Trench) are mine.
Also the J. Mendel, if I were still 25.
The Reed Krakoff can only look good on a runway model.  Otherwise, it’s Matron in a Prison Hospital.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=27432316 Ally Monge

I like the Prabal Gurung. I love the Derek Lam. And the Carmen Marc Valvo  is to die for. Wtf Chanel, Peter Som, & Pucci?

    • Louise Bryan

Nay, nay, nay.  Winter is colorless enough as it is.  Winter white just looks cold.

    • michelle shields

Thank god I don’t use credit cards!
