Fall 2012 Trends: Hats

Posted on April 19, 2012

Darlings, who doesn’t love a good hat? Well, people with big heads, we suppose.

Marc Jacobs

Granted, it seems like a bunch of designers went full-bore crazy when it comes to the hat designs for this season.

Anna Sui, Burberry Prorsum, Christian Dior

Donna Karan, Emilio Pucci, Giorgio Armani

Jason Wu, Jen Kao, Lacoste

Mara Hoffman, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors

Missoni, Moschino, Prabal Gurung

Rachel Zoe, Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger

Tracy Reese, Victoria Beckham, Yigal Azrouël

It’s interesting how many of these are menswear-inspired, from Donna Karan’s tiny little fedoras to Rachel Zoe’s and Armani’s more normal-sized ones; as well as Burberry’s newsboy cap, Hilfiger and Tracy Reese’s jockey caps, Moschino’s cowboy hat, Lacoste’s Holmesian deerstalker,  and Marc Jacobs’ train conductor cap. It’s like playing dressup using a little boy’s toy box. Cute, but we’ve always been partial to a good cloche a la Ralph Lauren. Which ones are your favorites? And could you see yourself sporting any of these styles?

Since I am of the big-head variety, I’m going to have to say no. But I am fond of the top row the most, although I could buy that Anna Sui one for, like, twenty bucks at any boutique.

    • SignLadyB

The newsboy cap with that gorgeous coat! The Giorgio Armani fedora. Period. The rest for me run from silly to hiddy (the hat that matches the plaid suit).

      • NormDeplume720

I love that one. Also the Ralph Lauren. The rest, not so much.

    • gsk241

The first one looks like something you would see walking around the LSU campus on a football weekend.  Blech.

Other than that, some of them are cute and probably wearable by the right person.  Unfortunately, I’m not that person since I’ve never found a hat that I look cute in.  :-(

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/4KLZGI7NMQE2LQDYYSMPFXANW4 Uche

Everyone looks great in a knit hat or fedora!

        • kimmeister

Problem is, rarely do fedoras come big enough for us large-headed gals.

          • NinaBoo

I’m with you, my big headed sister.

          • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Too true. Why do so few women’s hats come in larger sizes?

      • TheDivineMissAnn

Neither can I !  And it breaks my heart, because I love the addition of a hat to an outfit.

    • Michelle Nguyen

J’adore that angled fedora from Armani. I hope the trend catches on, so I can keep my head warm on those cold San Francisco nights.

      • TieDye64

It is gorgeous. Too bad I look horrid in hats. Well, that and not allowing myself to sell my firstborn so I could actually afford an Armani.

      • Stefanos Mantyla

I would agree with you about an angled fedora, but you see… Ne-Yo really killed that trend already with his ill-conceived brand of it. Douche. And he still insists on it.

    • SignLadyB

And then there’s that whole ridiculous Marc Jacobs get up. What were those designers smoking?

      • schadenfreudelicious

perhaps he is experiencing a Jamiroquai phase??

    • http://www.djplaw.com/ Tadiana

Interesting range from the sublime to the ridiculous.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I adore hats and wear them all the time.   So I say yes, yes, a thousand times yes!

    • TheOriginalLulu

Loving the Burberry newsboy and the Armani fedora. Also the Rachel Zoe and the Ralph Lauren. The Mara Hoffman could be wonderful and dramatic, but I don’t think it belongs with such a breezy little dress. I see it paired with something more like what the Michael Kors model is wearing or with a gorgeous, luxe coat.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/4KLZGI7NMQE2LQDYYSMPFXANW4 Uche

The Burberry,Jen Kao,Prabal Gurung,Rachel Zoe and Tommy Hilfiger. Fabulous outfits plus the hats. Honestly I could wear hats all day, even the few times my hair looks decent.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

i was trying to find one i wouldnt wear. cos, sure as shootin, i’ve worn variations on every one of em. except maybe the cowboy–then again, when i was a very little kid i’m certain i wore one of those too.

the only one i dont like is the lacoste [which figures], as i dont like lacoste [which figures]. & i’d rather the faux ones were either 1/ fake or 2/ recycled–& theyre probably neither.

i like the anna sui the best, which figures just about as much as my lack of lacoste love. i like visiting the intersection at glam & silly, which comes right before i hit the boulevard of broken dreams, which is probably the street upon which i sort of live. i like the other better, though, so maybe someday i will be allowed to head back there. who knows.

&, strange as it seems to me, myself, & the even more tired me, myself, i really like some of the stuff in this marc jacobs collection. strange cos i can usually write MJ off rather easily. then again, i liked a lot of his big eyelets too. odd redux. especially since most people who ordinarily like MJ, which i dont, did not like the eyelets. otoh, i think they grow on a person. not the eyelets themselves but–you know, i’m beat, i gotta get back to work before i begin to actually make sense!

    • Sara__B

No hats for me personally — my head’s too big. I like hats on other women, but not many of the ones shown here. Most of them would look even sillier off the runway than they do on it.

    • MilaXX

I love hats, bit since I’m one of those big head folks hats have always been a bit of a challenge for me. It’s even more of a challenge sine I now have a head full of dreadlocks to try and fit under said hat. As for what type, it depends on the outfit and mood. In fact, it’s easier to say what I dislike than what I like. Dislikes (on me); cowboy hats and lady fedoras. That’s about it. Otherwise I’ll wear whatever I can fit on my big head.

    • schadenfreudelicious

not sold on most of the hats, i will take that Victoria Beckham dress in a heartbeat however….

    • Isana Leshchinskaya

i would do the donna karan look head to toe. fabulous.

    • Lina_bee

Oh, I love hats!  I have about eight of them and I always want more.  When I’ve considered moving to a colder climate, the extended opportunity to wear hats is a big selling point!  Of these, I most like the Ralph Lauren smushed brown cloche, the Christian Dior fuzzy skullcap, and the Rachel Zoe relaxed fedora. I’d argue with you on the menswear inspiration, though — there have always been (going back a few centuries anyway) women’s hats that looked rather like men’s. Anyway, I’m glad to see the focus on them. Maybe there will be more good hats this fall in colors I can wear.

      • kimmeister

I live in California and yet I wear hats all the time.  Every couple of months, someone I barely know at work will come up to me and tell me, “I just love that you wear hats.”  You just gotta own it!

    • MitchellGilburne

It’s all about that Mara Hoffman hunty.

    • kimmeister

Faves: Burberry, Armani & Beckham.  Although I did go on a cloche-buying bonanza this past winter, and just bought a royal blue fedora last weekend.  I like the idea of the Marc Jacobs, but on me it would read “communist.”

Also, the Donna Karan dress is awesome.

    • Anathema_Device

Gimme that Armani fedora and I will rock it like no one’s business! I do love a cloche, though. I have a Kate Spade knit hat like the Anna Sui owl one, but mine has devil horns knit on it. I love that thing.

    • RebeccaKW

The Burberry, Armani, and the Rachel Zoe.  I need them.  Now.  I also think the Anna Sui is fun.

    • j_anson

My impression from my friends who have big heads is that they not only love good hats, they PINE for them.

That Marc Jacobs up top isn’t even crazy, it’s just stupid. Making something that looks like a cheap souvenir from the Doctor Seuss museum isn’t fashion. I WISH I were the kinda girl who could get away with the Giorgio Armani or the Moschino.

    • rawrgrowlrawr

I wear hats all the time. They look great on me (unlike sunglasses which always look awful). I need the Armani hat and the entire Victoria Beckham outfit.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1260924501 Frank Butterfield

This is all I can think of.  I think it was the headline that did it…

“That season we were loaded with pizazz. Earrings of fuchsia and peach.
Mind you, peach. And hats. Hats, hats, hats for career girls.”

    • Snailstsichr

I adore the entire Ralph Lauren ensemble. I also like the V Beckham, Armani and the Lacoste. I would wear the D Karan to a party or to lunch with the girls.

    • NDC_IPCentral

Headwear is in my pretty immediate future, but few of these awfully autumnal and wintery chapeaux will serve my needs this spring and summer, when the hair finally finishes falling out.  Beckham and Dior are the only ones that would seem even remotely appropriate for my chrome dome and the seasons!  In the meantime, baseball caps and knit caps and berets from dear friends of mine.  Not haute couture, but probably made with more love than any of the designers’ toppers.

      • Kayceed

The straw hats are in stores – not just the big sun hats, but also the fedoras, etc. I saw some nice mid-sized ones at Target this week that were not so aggressively hipster. I hope you can find something suitable for the warm weather.

    • VicksieDo

I like the Mara Hoffman, but alas, I have a huge head~

    • http://www.celestiae.net Isy

Donna Karan suit + Armani hat… perfection!!!

But I have a big head and even bigger hair, so I rarely can find hats that fit. I’m a sad cat with no hat. I love hats too. :(

    • librarygrrl64

LOVE the Donna Karan and Victoria Beckham!!!

      • Patricia Gillett

Those two were my faves as well!

    • Nonnah

I have a large head and I love the Giorgio Armani hat.  I figure a big hat or big hair fools people into thinking “Her heads not that big, it’s just the hat/hair.”

    • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

I looooooove the Armani fedora-like hat in the 3rd row.

Actually reminds me of one of grandfather’s fedoras that my mother just dug out of a closet for me. Too bad I can’t wear it until the fall!

    • http://twitter.com/marriedkuntz treat yo self

Love the jockey caps (the Tommy Hilfiger and Tracy Reese), and Donna Karan’s, even though I HATE fedoras almost as much as I hate newsboy caps.

    • RWtD

I shall be wearing the first ensemble to the Vikings’ home opener. If they are still here.

    • Judy_S

I wear broad-brimmed hats all the time, because I live in Florida. I tend to look more for SPF than style–square yardage. All the same, i wouldn’t trade my Outdoor Research Sombrero for any of these. The Donna Karan one seems to me the only one which echoes the ultimate inspiration, the Royal Wedding. The others seem like afterthoughts (PR last-minute challenge: make a hat from leftover fabric).

    • Lisa Kramp

I too am big headed, but I can get away with Fedoras and Newsboy caps, so the Armani and the Burberry would be doable. I love the Lauren and the Pucci, too.

    • guest2visits

A surprisingly lot of interesting and want-able hats and clothes. Alot of wacky too. Moshino is a big smile.

    • Monabel

Not one I’d wear, and I wear hats.

    • AudreysMom

even though we had a mild winter here in Minnesota, I’m voting for the Yigal Azrouël. Because you can never have enough fur on your head around here. For the total look though, I’m voting Donna Karan.

    • PeaceBang

As the granddaughter of a milliner, I am genetically inclined to love hats. Love the Donna Karan, like the Rachel Zoe (a look I would wear) and the Vicki Beckham and Ralph Lauren’s look is a lot of fun and the Giorgio Armani is sharp as hell.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Sarah-Adams/1143985903 Sarah Adams

I LOVE a good hat. These hats on the other hand…Meh. They range from boring to moronic. If I wanted to parade around in a padded jockey helmet I’d join a riding club. Don’t even get me started on the purple and yellow monstrosity.  And why do all the hats have to be menswear based? There was a time (many times actually) when women wore all kinds of awesome hats. Bring some of those back.

    • tinyredlocks

I love hats! But with a big head, and a lot of hair, I can never find one to fit. :-(

    • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

That Donna Karen ensemble is chic as sin. Meanwhile, Marc Jacobs clearly misses Jamiroquai. Gross.

    • ccm800

For spring nah –  fr fall sure!  that Armani fedora is mack!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Adore the Rachel Zoe, Armani and Ralph Lauren.  All classic and easy to wear.  I’d love to see more women wearing hats.

    • bluefish

Anna Sui (funny and cute), Armani, and Marc Jacobs for me.  LOVE the Tracy Reese outfit!  And the Armani suit.

    • Lilithcat

The Armani, Michael Kors and Rachel Zoe for me.

I like the Ralph Lauren, but I don’t look good in that style hat.

I love a good hat, but generally stick to what I find in vintage stores.  Modern milliners make hats so large that they end up sitting somewhere near my nose!  (Okay, I exaggerate, but only slightly.)

    • http://twitter.com/DarthJaeda Jaeda Laurez

Love the Armani and the Burberry Prorsum. I kind of like the Lacoste, I’d have to see it in profile to be sure.

    • Beardslee

I love hats and would love it if they came back.  There are a lot of fun ones featured in this post – thanks.

    • Cathy S

That Armani fedora is incredible. I wish I were chic enough to pull that off.

    • Jessica Rowe

Who’s the model in the Donna Karan?  Anyone know?  She was at every show…

    • lilazander

I love hats (as much as sunglasses, shoes, and bags) and I would totally wear Lacoste, Marc Jacobs, Ralph Loren an V. Beckham; who knows, maybe even the Yigal Azrouel. I also very much like Ana Sui, because it’s fun.

    • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

Let’s bring the fedora back. I love that idea.

    • formerlyAnon

Without an extended period of mirror-gazing, I can only claim the Mara Hoffman (in cold weather) and the Ralph Lauren for myself. IMO, there’s an upper age range for several of these (newsboy cap, the owl) and I don’t think an equestrienne’s hard hat works as a model for street wear, just because it is such a function-specific shape.

But all that’s MY bias. There’s a person for every one of these out there. And since hats no longer have a “proper” place in our fashion lexicon, as long as you feel better with the hat on your head, I say go for it!

    • Judy_J

I love hats, but I have such a small head that I am unable to find any that fit, unless I shop in the little girls department, which severely limits my selections.

    • luciaphile

Yay to hats. Always yay to hats, although not necessarily to THESE hats.

    • twocee

I don’t have a big head, but I’ve never found a hat that I think looks good on me.  Perhaps I just need to keep looking, because I love the concept of hats.

I love the Armani, the Rachel Zoe, and the Ralph Lauren.  Now, these need to trickle down to their affordable knock-offs.

    • ElitheMonkey

It took me a few seconds to realize that the Moschino on didn’t have fangs, the model was just wearing sunglasses. I love the little fedora and the newsboy one, but the rest- blah.

    • histrogeek

Jacobs had better watch his back. That pimp whose hat he stole is going to be pissed.

    • http://twitter.com/Petramatic Petra Mayer

Has Marc Jacobs been taking design lessons from Mystery the pick-up artist?  Ooooghhh, that hat.

    • http://twitter.com/jaythenerdkid Aaminah Khan

I want that Burberry newsboy cap pronto, please.

    • splix71

God damn it, I’m going to rock a deerstalker this fall. I believe in Sherlock Holmes.

      • LambeeBaby

I hear pipe smoking is making a comeback too

        • splix71

Maybe I’ll go with a nicotine patch. Even if breathing is boring.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Josefina-Madariaga-Suárez/100002964685796 Josefina Madariaga Suárez

I wanna try the Anna Sui, I could have so much fun with that one.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I hate to say it because I hate Victoria Beckham on principle, but I love that gray dress and beret so much and got sad that I could never ever wear them.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

I love nearly all of them – it would be easier to list the ones I WOULDN’T wear – well, Marc Jacobs, of course, that one is just a joke.  Also Donna Karan, and I’m not crazy about the Jason Wu.  Otherwise, LOVE ‘em!  I can rock a hat.  But nobody wears them here in Seattle, except the usual baseball caps and watch caps.

    • KathKo

I have a fetish for hats but sadly not the head for it.
I wear proudly a bonnet in winter and a fedora in autumn but I don’t think it suits me all that well.
It’s heartbreaking because I love love love hats and I think I could love wear every single one of those here.
      Yes, even the mini fedora.
Can’ts stand animal prints but just give me hat and I go all nuts.

    • http://www.thirteen.org/downton-abbey/category/the-downton-dish/ Gotham Tomato

As batshit crazy as that Marc Jacobs hat is, I wish I lived the kind of life where I could wear that hat.

And I actually like the Anna Sui character hat, but past a certain age, if you wear a hat like that you look like a crazy cat lady.–GothamTomato

    • Louise Bryan

I hate milliners because they don’t make hats that fit me.  Boo!!  I think some of these hats would be fun to wear.  Others are just worth making fun of.  Love, love the Armani fedora.

    • Stubenville

Why is there a raccoon sitting on the head of that last model?

    • http://twitter.com/Kikishua CMS

My 75 year old mum can wear hats.  Any hat.  I bet she’d even look good in that first huge Marc Jacobs.  I, on the other hand cannot.  Not even one as elegant and yummy as the Armani.  Gah.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1241487378 Lauren Lynch Fox

      like the Armani.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=630168379 Brian G. Cox

The tiger-striped, Lakers pimp hat looks like something that gets picked up on Bourbon Street when self-discipline is impaired. (At least mine is mostly black, however, with pink and purple leopard spotted trim.)

    • LambeeBaby

Love the Dior and the Jason Wu. I LOVE a good hat…and can WERQ it too but sometimes I am unwilling to suffer the hat head aftermath.

    • http://twitter.com/Lola99959 Veronika Kaufmann

yes please. I’d like the Jason Wu fringe delight.

    • LilyPad

That Marc Jacobs looks like one of those fuzzy oversize pimp hats that you can win at carnivals, the only difference is instead of shooting balloons with darts to get it you have to pay 10 grand.

    • http://thatsaprettyhat.blogspot.com/ Kathleen Lisson

I am definitely a lover of cloches. I also like the fur hats.
