Emmy Rossum in Rachel Zoe

Posted on April 09, 2012

Oh, Emmy. Your outfit is so very.

Rachel Zoe Joplin Ruffle-Skirt Shirtdress

So very “Oh! Photographers! How unexpected!”

So very Beverly Hills (because gas station coffee runs require cocktail dresses with matching iPhone cases in the BH).

So very adorable. Sassy-cute and stylish. We all kind of hate you for making the rest of us look like slobs.

But we love the shoes, girl. LOVE.

Love how minimal her makeup and hair are. What a fabulous little dress – and the shoes are totally perfect with it! I covet everything she’s wearing.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/J2VE4NE2FY2BP4QD2XOYKJGLPI Laura

Hate the bag with it. Otherwise, cute!

      • http://profiles.google.com/valencia.lucia87 Lucía Valencia

We can barely see the strap, how can you diss it? O_o

        • TieDye64

For me it’s the color of the bag that’s all wrong.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_64HSRZWCSJ5RBFGCWDLFQOICYM G

I think the shoes are fugly.

      • AthenaJ

Same here, all I see are old lady orthopedic shoes – even though I’m sure they cost more than my monthly car payment.

        • suz72350

Oh good, I’m not the only one who recoiled in horror when I saw her feet. Old lady shoe cute cocktail dress?  Noooo!

          • tinyredlocks

Nope. You are not the only one. If you are going to go very casual shoes with very flirty/fancy/girly dress, you can never go wrong with Chucks. I’d wear a dress or skirt with Chucks any day over those fugly things…

            • TheOriginalLulu

Ok, glad there’s a group of people who feel the way I do about the shoe situation here. I don’t hate the shoes themselves; they would actually be very cute with something less formal than a cocktail dress. If she wanted to do flats, there are a number of cute options that would go better with this dress than those shoes.
Other than that, though, she looks adorable.

            • michelle shields

Glad I’m not the only one who thinks those look like my grandmother’s orthos

        • http://profile.yahoo.com/ZFKRECRF5BOBWB4RXAJGI4D6KA mmc

          Yep, the shoes are cringe-worthy.

      • mshesterp

To me they look like shoes I wore for marching band in high school, so I just can’t get behind them.  I don’t know that I can appreciate the men’s wear paired with women’s wear when it comes to footwear.  :-  The rest of her is adorable, and you know–props for not having to wear heels around town, although the shoes seem a little too casual for the rest of the outfit.

      • mountainFashionista

They seem self-consciously retro to me.
In 1992, when I came home with a pair of shoes very much like these, my mother said, “Ugh!  Nun shoes!”

        • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

I also had a similar pair in the early nineties. I believe my mother also hated them. I wore the ever loving crap out of them though.

          • meowing

Yup, I had a  collection of what I lovingly called my ‘old lady shoes,’ but Mom called them ‘sinfully ugly.’  Looking back, she was right.

            • TheOriginalLulu

Yes! I had a pair of shoes that were black leather, thick-soled oxford type shoes and my mother HATED them. She said they looked like the orthotics they make for 80-year olds. I didn’t care; they were SO comfortable. I wouldn’t be caught dead in those things now, though.

            • http://twitter.com/Mylynka Mylynka Cardona

Yes. 80’s. So IN then. So fug in hindsight!

      • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I love those shoes.  I have had a version of them every decade of my life, starting with high school.  I hope they’re coming back, because I could use another pair.

      • guest2visits

Yeah I hate the shoes with this pretty dress. Or any dress. Would they even look good with pants, ?
These shoes walked right out of a 1930s dust bowl featurette.

        • TheOriginalLulu

They would definitely look great with a pair of jeans or khakis. But not with a cocktail dress.

      • NurseEllen

        Those. Shoes. Are. Awful.
        Period.

        • Adriana_Paula

          Word.

      • tween00

This outfit would be so much cuter with a more feminine shoe. Yeesh!

      • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

It’s a scrolldown fug to me.

But I have a serious bias against short dresses worn with oxfords.

      • Patti Lever

        Hideous!

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

She looks totally great.  Head to toe.  Congrats, Emmy.

      • Jill_3

I pretty much love everything about this, shoes, bag, glasses, dress. As a native of the BH, I’m going to run out and buy this outfit IMMEDIATELY so I don’t look so out of place at my local gas station.I mean, last time I filled my tank, I was just woefully under-dressed. It was embarrassing.

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

The thing here is, this is a look that could translate to an affordable ready to wear context quite easily.  So I say, GO for it!

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

It’s a bit much. I am in awe that those shoes don’t make her legs look heavy though.

      • ballerinawithagun

She has fabulous legs! I wish I could get away with that look. Women who are great swing dancers wear those shoes with skirts all the time. She probably has always worn that type of shoe because of her extensive training for Broadway.

        • amywinns

Ha! You must be a lindyhopper. Never thought I’d see Aris Allens referenced here! (not namechecked exactly, but clearly you’ve seen the oxfords in action) :)

    • http://www.thirteen.org/downton-abbey/category/the-downton-dish/ Gotham Tomato

The dress is adorable, and the shoes are unexpected. Not exactly sure I’m crazy about them with this dress, but three cheers for bucking the 7-inch heel trend and going with something she can walk in.

      –GothamTomato

    • http://twitter.com/geekgirl69 geekgirl69

LOL, I own similar shoes and where them with skirts and dresses.  Seeing her look so cute in them is a little like affirmation of my own style.

      • lonepear

I was thinking the same thing. (“Hey, I have those shoes! Maybe they are cute when I wear them too!”)

    • Golfkat

I would hardly consider that a cocktail dress. I like the look, but the shoes are not working for me at all, though at least she’s not in platform heels. Hair and makeup is perfect. You almost can’t tell she had her hair lightened for Beautiful Creatures.

    • SpcilK

      Adore! Great little dress.

    • kimmeister

I like the phone case and the sunglasses.  She can keep everything else.

    • Rebecca Johnson

I like everything but the pattern of the dress. It’s like looking at a blood sample under a microscope.

    • nannypoo

I like that she’s not pretending to be horrified to be spotted by photographers. She got her picture taken, so she lives to be relevant another day. She looks cute.

    • http://twitter.com/knitgrlnyc Maureen

Hate the shoes.  Remind me of shoes I had to wear to jazz class back in the day.

    • marilyn

It was perfect until I got to the prison matron shoes.

    • http://twitter.com/delysia_lafosse Delysia LaFosse

A little much, but super, super cute. I love the colors on that dress.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

Love the pattern, hate the old-man shoes, hate that every single proportion on this dress is off. The sleeves are a bit too long, skirt a bit too short, waist a bit too low. She could have looked amazing but instead she’s just okay.

    • MilaXX

I love this look and actually found an affordable pair of those shoes in a metallic finish.

    • SapphoPoet

I like the shoes (I have a similar pair) but I don’t care for that dress–it makes me think of blood cultures on slides. And as I just had a mastectomy, anything that reminds me of the doctor makes me shudder.

      • sagecreek

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

        • SapphoPoet

Thank you, sagecreek. Recovery is going well. Lymph node removal (a minimal number, luckily) and chemo is next. Gonna be a long summer. But…keep calm and carry on. :)

    • quiltrx

Those shoes ARE so very!!  All she needs is the red scrunchie now. :)

When I saw the first pic, I just glanced and the frou-frou phone cover made it look like she was drinking a juice box.  How cute would that have been????

      • sagecreek

        I thought the same thing!

        • SapphoPoet

          Me, too!

    • DaringMiss

I love the shoes (in my lifetime I have owned several paris of these shoes), but NOT with this dress.  The skirt fluff takes the dress to levels that are too fancy for these shoes.

    • mjude

i love me a boy shoe

      • SewingSiren

        Me too.

    • Stephen Bornstein

That dress is a Seurat painting…..no pretense here.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Emmy just loves this.  Oh my gah, the paparazzi are here and I just happen to look amazing, without really trying!

    • Anathema_Device

Yay! I love the dress and the oxfords with it. She looks adorable.

    • Verascity

I’m surprised people are loving this dress so much. I hate that fussy little skirt. And I hate the shoes.

      • In_Stitches

I’m with you on the skirt.  It’s just too much with the busy print, sleeves and built-in belt.

The shoes, I don’t hate on their own, but they certainly don’t work with the girly dress.

    • ArrEssJay

      I don’t love the shoes.

    • TieDye64

Suddenly I feel under dressed. She looks adorable. Except for the bag.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Love the dress. Could live without the shoes. I guess I love them on her? I would look like a dork in them.  Something about oxfords with no socks – it looks hot and uncomfortable.

    • DominoEstella

cute as a bug in a rug.. whatever that means

    • Spicytomato1

I’m seeing those shoes a lot lately. And I have a pair from J Crew, circa mid-90s…I hung onto them because they were my favorite shoes for work for years (now I work at home). Wonder if I can actually wear them again?

    • Lulu Lafurge

I knew if I hung onto my comfy Munro Oxfords they’d come back in style. Took 15 years, but it was worth it.

    • Susan Crawford

I have to admit it: Rachel Zoe may not be groundbreakingly original in her designs, but she knows what is au courant, on trend and extremely “buh-na-nas”. This is a really cute dress, accessorized with flair – nothing I love better than Oxford-style shoes with a flirty dress or a well-worn pair of khakis.

    • http://twitter.com/connectinglines Me Again

She looks fantastic.  What an interesting dress.  And of COURSE she has to wear a cocktail dress to do a coffee run, because of all the photogs and the cruel gay uncles like T-Lo who will tear her a new one if she pokes out from behind her curtain in anything un-fabulous!

    • bellafigura1

      Perfection, including the bag.

    • abigail3

Are you kidding? Those shoes look insane with that dress, and not in a good way.

      • Lisa

        I know!

      • sleah_in_norcal

yeah…i’m not buying the shoes either.

      • Melvis Velour

Me 3…the shoes are totally wrong for that look…LOVE the dress though!  Motherhood has definitely been good to Ms. Zoe

      • cluecat

Flat leather mens’ shoes with dresses and skirts are on trend now in street style.  It’s kind of a hipster influence thing – like no make up and large frame glasses.

Back in my day (early 90s) we wore tiny, floral printed sundresses with docs and other clunky shoes and boots.  No socks.  At the end of an ’80 degree day, we’d sit around our dorm rooms, smoking pot, and airing out our wet, sweaty feet.   No way in hell I’m going back to that for fashion!

    • SewingSiren

Love the whole look dress + phone case + most especially the shoes. The shoes really make it her own.

    • girliecue

This outfit looks very contrived to me. Cocktail dress with a shoulder bag and oxfords. Really?? Oh, I’m just out running errands – hence the sensible bag and shoes. I’m wearing an eye-catching cocktail dress, but don’t mind me. Just taking care of a few odds and ends. In perfect hair and makeup. Not trying to be noticed or anything. Not at all.

And if she’s not wearing footies, those oxfords are going to be painful.

    • jw_ny

I also absolutely love the look!  A touch of well chosen quirk.  8-)

      • rawrgrowlrawr

But doesn’t quirk lose its meaning when it is so deliberate?*

*why I don’t like Zooey Deschanel

        • girliecue

          Exactly.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Julie-Chase/731391326 Julie Chase

I hate the shoes, but the dress is unbelievably adorable. Great pattern.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Micaela-Cannon/1465504041 Micaela Cannon

      that’s totally starbucks tlo.
      as if.

      • sleah_in_norcal

and it’s not coffee, it’s ice tea.

    • DebbieLovesShoes

Please find out for all of us bitter kittens where those shoes came from!

    • formerlyAnon

Can’t like. Too ’80s in my brain.

Do like the shoes. In fact, I had some like that. In the, um, ’80s.

    • http://korilian.livejournal.com/ korilian

You call that a cocktail dress? I would wear the shit out of that as a day look.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6PUVFQ7YCZZFZRIER6BEJ4HVYE Amye

Those are the UGLIEST shoes (for a female), I have ever seen.  And I have seen some pretty bad ones.

    • ChaquitaPhilly

LOVE the Shoes! The dress is pretty nifty, too. What a great combo!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=583505025 Kelley Comfort

Meh, I’m getting Alexa Chung flashbacks. This look reminds me of when Alexa carried that brown Mulberry bag everywhere and wore nothing but flat, black shoes with mini dresses.

    • Allyson Wells

I do not love those shoes. I think this would have been so much cuter with some flat sandals. I do, however, love the dress, bag and Katniss hair!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HY37OQ6GEB5IMWUREVZ2KE5HYA Norita

In what parallel universe are “Eleanor Roosevelt Groundgrippers” cute shoes?????

      • http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/ Tom and Lorenzo

The one where people have taste and style.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000031452008 Eileen DeSalvor Cannon

Really, TLO? She looks so…. waitress-y. I keep thinking I see her restaurant check pad peeking out of her pocket — errr — ruffles. Maybe she’s wearing those shoes to drive in, and will slip on something more coherent when she reaches her destination. Otherwise, a touch of cognitive dissonance.
The shoes bring back too many disturbing catholic school memories to ever be anything other than an OUT.

    • http://blue-again.myopenid.com/ blue

The dress is adorable but those shoes? Ugh. Would’ve looked super cute with some strappy sandals.

    • Cathy S

That dress is so fabulous. I love it.

    • http://twitter.com/starrika Ali

She looks miserable. Back away from the Rachel Zoe, Emmy! She’ll turn you into another Hollywood bot!
