Emily Blunt in Carolina Herrera

Posted on April 11, 2012

We adore Emily, so our bitchfest at her for wearing the wrong lip color the other day left us weary and heartbroken. Okay, no; not really. But we did take a look at these pics and clapped (not really, either) because it meant she could return to our good graces. Because nothing ruins an imaginary friendship like the wrong lip color, amirite, girls? Anyway, take it away, Ems:

Emily Blunt attends the premiere of “Salmon Fishing In The Yemen” in London in a Carolina Herrera dress.

Carolina Herrera Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Julia Frauche

SUPER-cute, yes? Hair and makeup look great, the dress fits her like a dream and makes her butt look fabulous, and the shoes are perfectly chosen. Yes, it’s true. We’re totally okay with the peeptoes. We honestly don’t think any shoe would be more appropriate for this dress than the ones she’s wearing. What prevents this from being a WERQ entry is that hem. We get it, but it looks better in the rarefied atmosphere of a runway show. Out on the street, it just looks like her hem’s coming undone.

Still, it’s a fab look. Well done, Miss Blunt.

I like the dress, but the fact that the sleeves end at the elbow and the hem just below the knees strikes me as a tad awkward in terms of proportions.

And is it just me, or could she play Christina Hendricks’ sister judging by that top pic?

    • I could see it.

      • LAVINIA

I was thinking the same thing re: Hendricks!

    • Funny, I was thinking she should be cast as Gabrielle Anwar’s sister. Similar smile.

      • KC

OMG she needs to play Gabrielle Anwar’s sister STAT

    • Candigirl1968

       Agree on all counts!

    • fursa_saida

I was just about to comment that she looks like Joan’s skinny sister here. MATT WEINER, DO YOU HEAR US? MAKE THIS HAPPEN IMMEDIATELY.

    • charlotte

My first thought was that she looks like Christina Hendricks minus the boobies. Glad I’m not the only one. Weird though that I’ve never noticed that before.

    • megohd

That is exactly the thought that came into my mind—she should play Joan Holloway’s sister.

  • I hate that it looks like they put a matching belly shirt over this beautiful dress.  Hemline isn’t terrible, but it looks like it would be kind of itchy.  Her face, looks positively gorgeous.  Bravo Em.

  • She looks great. Where’s her super-cute hubby? He’s a nice accessory.

  • MilaXX

I like and don’t mind the hem

    • Adriana_Paula

Ditto.  I think the sheer hem flirts with the calf-length people are always freaking about while still being flattering.

  • Wow – love this!!  She looks amazing!  Very cool dress.

  • fringebenefit

Black stockings on the model are what make the look. With the nude stockings, it just looks like Emily’s on her way to the office wearing a dress with inappropriate bling.

    • jw_ny

       To the office?!…nope, I don’t see that.

      • lovelyivy

Ditto. The shape of this dress is vaguely office-wearish, but every single other element about it takes it away from that.

    • Lori

The model isn’t wearing black tights though. She seems to be wearing blue tights + black knee socks. That’s fine for runway, but I think it would look odd on the street and Emily’s choice to go with bare legs makes more sense for the real world.

      • Spicytomato1

Actually I think they are black tights but the hem creates an optical illusion. I definitely think dark legs (blue, black, whatever) with this dress are a cooler choice than bare ones.

        • ringthing

I think so too, but she still looks fabulous imo.

    • jessieroset

I’m seeing older-woman formal cruise wear – although she still seems to making it work.

    • kimmeister

I don’t think she’s wearing any stockings at all, since we can see her pedicure so well.

  • P M

This is not meant as a personal attack (sorry uncle TLo!) but I prefer her smirking to actually smiling. Her smile, especially with teeth showing, is something I find unsettling.

  • P M

The dress should have been altered to either remove that hem or shorten it. Otherwise, FAB.

  • jw_ny

Emily looks so much better than she did with that totally wrong lip color she sported the other day…that, with all the matchy matchy and severe hair, was a disaster!  This look is beautiful and the perfect color lip. Hair is perfect….eyes are a bit too SJP, but I’d give her a werq anyway…and that hem doesn’t bug me.  Oh yeah, her butt does look pretty amazing too!  😉

  • RebeccaKW

    I love it all.

  • Little_Olive

I actually like the hem; I think it gives it a good finish. The length I’m not no convinced about but it’s nothing serious. The shoes are good with the outfit but I would’ve loved something a bit more interesting (just a bit because the dress is busy enough). Man, did I wake up nitpicky.

    • NurseEllen

My thoughts exactly.  The hem is what keeps it interesting, otherwise the dress would just be a horizontal black & blue blur.  I prefer the bare/nude stockinged legs to the black sported by the model.  However, I love the model’s hair, I think Miss Em’s looks a tad on the limp side.  A great look all around.

  • Jessi03

I say WERQ!  The looks incredible.

  • Super cute dress, I love the hem, it’s the bridesmaid shoes that are giving me eye twitches.

  • Sarah Thomas

Hunh. Never realized she looked like the good Perry sister, the one who can’t sing and went to law school while Katy was out eating Ring-Pops dipped in molly at sick teenage keggers.

    • I have no idea what most of those words mean, but I love the mental image it conveys!

    • ballerinawithagun

I agree, Katy Perry’s sister not Christina Hendrick’s sister.

  • LOVE this.  Its an awesome dress, a perfect color for her and just edgy enough to be really interesting without being insane.

  • She looks beautiful!

  • She’s so adorable. Just look at that bum!

  • Pants_are_a_must

It’s like Carolina Herrera by way of Hervé Leger. And somehow it works! I think Blunt is the only one who could werq it anyway.

  • gdougs

Gorgeous. Love it. She is the one person that could pull off that dress. And she should keep whoever did her hair and makeup on speed dial for all the rest of her events!

  • lordandtaylor

Cute male reporter in photo six. He can interview me anytime. Oh, and Ms Blunt looks good, too.

    • Funkyjuicebox

Agreed! And did you see his shoes? He looks like he should be walking the red carpet with her! And yes, she looks great. Dark blue is amazing on her.

  • Since The Devil Wears Prada, Emily has been my friend in my head. Love her and love this look!

  • Spicytomato1

Pretty dress but I like the styling on the model with the dark hose/tights. Somehow that looks more retro/mod/edgy to me and more appropriate with the dress. Her hair and makeup are nicely polished, too. Thumbs up.

  • ballerinawithagun

Great dress, I love the hemline and her fabulous butt! I don’t like the neckline on her, it needs to be lowered a bit. A square neckline would have been great with the stripes. Hate the bare legs and the shoes are too clumpy.

  • Judy_J

I love this, and I’d give her a WERQ.  She looks gorgeous.

  • Call me Bee

Love it!! I’d give her a WERQ–it’s all perfect.

  • Jessica Goldstein

She looks awesome all right. I think what you two don’t like about the hem on the street is that it looks very different against bare legs compared to being against dark tights.

  • SapphoPoet

LOVE IT. I would totally wear this to my chemo sessions. She looks great. Although do we need an eyeliner intervention? Looks like she used a pretty heavy hand there.

  • janetjb

She doesn’t look like the same woman, Brava!

  • blumonky

Love the dress, the makeup not so much. A lighter touch with the eyeliner would balance better with the pale lips… On another topic, is anyone else tired of the red carpet photo stance with the one leg crossed awkwardly in front of the other? It doesn’t make you look thinner, it makes you look like you’re about to fall over.

  • gabbilevy

Want. that. dress, right now. I have my spoon in my hand and I will cut the first bitch who tries to take it away.

    Also, Emily look fantastic.

  • Still a WERQ for me. She looks flawless.

  • I actually think it looks better on her than on the runway.

  • nannypoo

Take away that stuff at the hemline and this will be perfect. She seems to be wearing a lot of non-statement rings that do nothing for the styling of her outfit, and in fact seem a little distracting. Otherwise, fabulous.

  • Bozhi

She does look really good, but I liked the dress on the model better because of the black tights and booties.  This is a great dress, but not a spring/summer dress.

  • juliamargaret

Yes, super cute! I want that dress, although I do go back and forth on the hem. The beading effect is pretty, but the very bottom layer also kind of looks like a layer of plastic wrap at some angles, especially on the model. Over bare leg it looks a bit better. Just not quite right.

  • dress_up_doll

Looooove all things Carolina Herrera! I get that some find the length of the hem a bit awkward. However, it’s also my favorite part of this look.

  • Agree completely. I was going to say I almost love it, but that sheer part is unnecessary. Drags the look down.

  • judith traherne

…it’s just the color; it does *nothing* for her…

  • I am in the minority here but I really find the dress oddly aging.

  • DeborahLipp

Oh, go on and give her the WERQ. You know you want to.

  • MzzPants

What a great look.  This is one time when I think the sheer hem is perfect.

  • TheOriginalLulu

The dress looks great on her and I love her hair like that. She’s so pretty.
Agreed that the dress would have looked cleaner without that silliness at the hem, but it’s not horrible.

And HOORAY for the elbow-length sleeve!

  • lilazander

I tend to love Emily in everything she wears (though I agree with you about the lip colour last time). This lady just knows how to work a hell of an outfit.

  • Carla_Charlton

Hate the peep toe shoes.  This will sound grossly old-fashioned, but if the shoes aren’t sandals, generally speaking, the toes shouldn’t show.  But that’s just me…

  • Anathema_Device

I love it all, unconditionally. I even like the hem. It looks intentional enough with the embellishments. Well, if I had to pick one little nit, it would be her hair. No, I wouldn’t pick nits out of her hair, you know what I mean. It is a little blah. I’d have either pulled it back or straightened it more or made it wavier. It is a little too in between for me.

  • Annabelle Archer

So….my brother’s neighbor is the PA for her husband and they hang out at the PA’s place occasionally.  Apparently they are salt of the earth type people, genuine and totally non-affected.  I love that you feature her so often, she is cute as a button and takes a fierce fashion shot. I wish she was getting more work I’d love to see her get a cute little rom com with a sexy leading man.

    • Anathema_Device

Nora to Johnny Depp’s Nick in the Thin Man movie in the works!!

      • alyce1213

Is that set?  I’d heard she was “in the running” and I’m pulling for her.
Gosh, I hope ol’ Johnny doesn’t go too quirky with it.

  • CatherineRhodes

What makes the hem work on the runway is the dark hose.

But I’d still vote for a WERQ.

  • guest2visits

This is a pretty and interesting dress. But dark. I think it looks slightly better on the model; if only because she’s fair haired
and walking across a bright white runway. It ‘lifts’ the whole look.  Certainly; Emily’s beauty still comes shining through,
though I wish she had done something extra with the hair, and maybe even a different eye-treatment.  Picky ?

  • fringebenefit

I love the hem, but it’s just not working for me with the nude pantyhose. The dress seems more evening because of that bit of bling on the hem. Maybe a 6pm cocktail reception kind of thing. In any case, she looks lovely in it.

  • ThaliaMenninger

I like the hem.  It makes it more interesting than just a cute navy dress. I think she looks super. I like it better with the boots on the red carpet, but still, very nice, Ms. Blunt!

  • luciaphile

    Love this!

  • amber_julene

Putting to bed the myth about horizontal stripes making a lady look wide. Wowza.

    • j_anson

Well, I think it helps if the lady is, like, a size -2.

  • I LOVE this dress and it totally shocked me to see that it’s by Carolina Herrera because I tend to hate her work as generally matronly and ladies who lunchy. But this is adorable and Emily looks gorgeous.

  • Hem included, WERQ. Love it. She looks amazing.

  • i’m ok with the hem, as bizarre as it is.  i think that nude hose / no hose (can’t tell) was the better way to go instead of the black tights.

wow.  the more i look at that dress, the more i want it.

    • jw_ny

No hose.  I agree that this was the better way to go too.  The black hose would be fine for winter or even an edgier woman, but I also think that they make the overall silhouette quite dark and bottom heavy.  The exposed leg skin helps keep it fresh, balanced, and more Emily’s style.

  • guestela

    Truly fab.

  • giiiirrrr

I don’t like the hem either, but it gets a WERQ from me anyway.  That dress is to DIE for.

  • Joyce VG

LOVELY! I love that the dress covers her, but gives her such a sexy silhouette.

  • Sophie Collier

I kind of like it better with the black tights like the model is wearing.  Pale legs under a dark dress (esp with a longer hemline) look unappealing.  But yeah, the fit is to die for and it’s a cute dress.

  • unbornfawn

Too much dark eye make up can ruin an imaginary friendship for me.

  • Fabulous.  I want it!

  • alyce1213

I’m calling it a lower-case werq.  The hem would be okay with darker hosiery, but it’s fabulous.

  • poggi

From the front, it’s nice.  From the side, it’s a WERQ. I suppose that adds up to nice werq.

  • abigail3

What?! The hair looks pretty boring. Otherwise quite gorgeous!

  • I usually am not a fan of the thick black eyeliner – it’s actually what is ruining my close friendship with Sarah Jessica Parker – but here it really works. I love the whole look, even the hem and yes, I agree, the shoes are perfect.

  • granddelusion

This dress is kind of wonky, but I love it.

  • Wow, her butt looks pretty awesome in that dress. You’ve been making me oogle ladies all day TLo!

  • snarkykitten

She’s also ruining the silhouette by posing her arm like that.

  • She’s adorable. Love it. Love her.

  • IAmJ

    She looks lovely. Very chic.

  • piecesofconfetti

Love this look. Her makeup is perfection.

  • bluefish

She looks gorgeous and I love the dress — hem and all.  Gorgeous top.

  • formerlyAnon

    Super-cute, yes.

  • bellafigura1

Love, and love her.  Something so decent, smart and funny just shines right on through.  She’s one of those celebs I (no doubt stupidly) secretly believe is better than the rest of them, and has good common sense and will stay true blue and married (I’m looking at you, Mr. Krasinski!) And great ass in these pics!

  • Wow, I love that dress. So interesting and flattering.

  • Judih1

love everything from the knees up. do not like the shoes. prefer boots paired with black hose

  • sid123

    ohhhh pretty.

  • PeaceBang

I madly adore the styling on the model and love it on Emily B. Her tushie really does look fantastic.

  • rainwood1

Now those are color tones that she can look great in.  She looks great.

  • Corsetmaker

I love that dress! And I love the hem. That’s what takes it from being a nice but unexciting dress into being a wow dress. I’d like to see it closer up actually. as the fabric looks like ribbon stitched onto the sparkly base fabric.

  • Kolo_Ol

    I actually love that hem!

  • EEKstl

She is a total WERQ for me.  Normally I HATE sleeves that length but it so perfectly matches the layer on the bodice that I can’t even complain about that.  This is the total package – perfection.

  • beautiful!!

  • DAT ASS.
