Elizabeth Banks in Peter Pilotto

Posted on April 20, 2012

Oh, Miss Elizabeth. You’ve been suckered by a dress.

Elizabeth Banks attends “The Five Year Engagement” premiere party in NYC in a Peter Pilotto dress.

Peter Pilotto Spring 2012 Collection/Model: Janice Alida

And we don’t blame you, because really, this dress is pretty fantastic and the colors really suit you. But this is why stylists need to do their due diligence and why you should take some test shots to see how it photographs before you go out the door. Because if you had, you would have realized that the way a dress is lined is of the utmost importance when one is to be photographed, and when the lining – for no reason that we can fathom – suddenly goes dark just north of your lady area, it’s going to force bitchy bloggers like us to do a double-take because it gives the impression that you’re… um… doing the opposite of hiding your light under a bushel, if you know what we mean (and we think you do).

Also: something-something about drapes and carpets.

man alive…you are so rights… because that is one glorious dress..being underserved by it’s underpinnings.

  • introspective

my eyes are seared. what happened to the hot streak you were on for the non stop hunger games poledance a few weeks back? was the stylist for that rented for a limited time only? looks like it…

    • Spicytomato1

Lol, but I have to respectfully disagree. I don’t think it’s THAT bad. A small misstep, maybe, on what I’d say is still a hot streak.

  • HomeOfficeGirl

I laugh.. you’re right.  Man, it so HARD to pull off a perfect look, isn’t it??  And otherwise, she looks really fantastic!

  • Patricia Gillett

Is there any universe in which that dress works with that lining?

    • I don’t think that’s lining. I think it’s actually a two-piece outfit and what we’re seeing is the top tucked into the skirt. The skirt should have been lined to prevent it showing through.

  • ccinnc

Ugh, all I can think of is biology class – veins, arteries, skinless muscles, heartbeats on a monitor, etc. Dislike.

    • jtabz

Now that I see it … I can’t unsee it!

    • poggi

I thought the same thing about the skirt part.

    • MilaXX

       like Slim Good Body.

      • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

    • Violina23

Dude! Especially those two big “arteries” going down the legs! @jtabz:disqus is right, I’ve seen it, I can’t un-see it!

    • up with pod people

Exactly what I was going to say!! Total anatomy diagram.

  • schadenfreudelicious

aside from the disconcerting lining action in the crotch region, if you stare at her chest for awhile (especially in the first pic), it creates a truly weird optical effect….

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Exactly!  It looks like one big blob that is coming away from her body.  Too freaky.  I like the skirt, but would have lined it completely.

    • It’s the eye of Sauron in fabric form.

  • introspective

OMG just took in the whole south side of the dress and the proximity we all have to the good china. GOOD LORD NO. this is clearly not an in or out post, because we all know homegirl is OUT.

  • I think it’s oogly. But it does make her eyes look like blue lasers, so that’s probably good?

I don’t see the fabulosity of the dress – lining or no lining. It really hurts my eyes. And it’s too early for that. But I still love Elizabeth for being risky.

  • TheDivineMissAnn

Yep.  It’s a shame about that lining, because that is one fab dress.  She looks fantastic otherwise.

  • Love the skirt part of the dress, to bad for lining issue. The top part= meh!

  • MilaXX

Those prints are um…, interesting. I’m not sure I like them. I think I would like the skirt part is the lining completely matched the bottom and was one color. Really not crazy about the top.

  • Sobaika Mirza

That dress is a stunner, and so is she. Lady are notwithstanding.

  • nannypoo

Whatever it’s doing, it seems to be doing it again at the bottom of the skirt. Except for this strange problem, I love the dress and it looks great on her.

  • Violina23

I feel like it’s a magic-eye dress, and if I cross my eyes and stare at it long enough, some kind of object is going to project itself out of her boobs

  • I didn’t even notice the lining! I was looking at the top and trying to figure out where her boobs started and ended.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

in gay-bear speak, i’d say her dress lining makes her look like she’s an otter.

  • Jessica O’Connell

While the lining is a little…odd…I still think this is a great look. Not overly fond of the hair all over the one shoulder (short mermaid hair, better or worse than the long, typical mermaid hair?), but I still think she looks sharp and gorgeous.

    • Spicytomato1

Short mermaid hair drives me crazy…my sister does that all the time, I think it’s a nervous tic. Everytime she swoops it off to the side like that I immediately want to push it back where it was. To the point where I couldn’t even look at her at the Easter lunch table. Just took a deep breath and kept my eyes on the plate.

  • bluefish

This is a beautiful dress that looks great on the model — seems to be a theme this week, eh?  EB is an attractive woman but never seems to dress to her strengths.  She’s not edgy enough in looks to pull this kind of thing off and the hairstyle has nothing to do with the garment and makes her look ten years older.  She needs a good stylist who can help her figure out what suits her and what doesn’t.  Like you say, can’t blame anyone for liking the dress — beautiful and original.

    • mountainFashionista

She should hire the costumer from “Our Idiot Brother” to be her full-time stylist.  She looked amazing in that movie!

  • quiltrx

Wow–you can kind of see this in the model picture, but those flashbulbs really show it.

And while we’re at it…I like the bottom, and I like the top, but not together.

  • Anathema_Device

Oh, yes, such a shame because I do like that dress. I like the mix of colors and patterns. Not being a real fashionista, I had never even heard of Peter Pilotto until a year or so ago, but he is one of my favorites when it comes to pattern, color & texture.  With the proper lining, this would have been a home run. Although, short mermaid hair is even worse than long mermaid hair.

    • guestela

Yeah, the hair looks ridiculous and seems to distort the shape of her face/head.

  • guest2visits

I don’t love this dress; but she is stunning from the waist up. Also; love the newer, fresher make-up styling.

  • Judy_J

It is a very cool dress, and the colors look fabulous on her.  I really don’t like the see-through skirt, though.

  • Visually a very interesting dress, but practically its a lot going on.  And with the nude slip, it ruins the overall look.  I can say for her, from the neck up she’s always got it right.

  • It looks the same way on the model…like she wore dark blue panties, and they’re showing through the dress.

  • TheOriginalLulu

I really want to like this dress, but I can’t. I think maybe if the top didn’t have that humungous blue thing splitting her chest in half or maybe if it just had a simpler top altogether, then maybe I would like it better. And also if the lining didn’t do that thing you mentioned. It really is distracting.
I have a question. How come when a girl styles her hair off to one side like this, she ALWAYS feels the need to lean her head to one side like that? What, is her hair all of the sudden so heavy that she can’t hold her head up straight??

  • Also, the two red stripes running down the skirt are looking like the legs of a peculiarly jointed red insect.  Now it’s bugging me. 🙂

  • BioDrag

What?!  No Frankendress comments?  That’s not one dress, it’s two!  I bet in a week we see Ms. Banks on another red carpet wearing with that scury veins & arteries pattern on top (with the odd lining across the boobs, no doubt) and the migrain inducing optical print below the waist.

  • Knightley

Every time I see her, I think she’s a younger Chelsea Handler.  The dress is a bit off, but could have been great.

    • PeaceBang

me too. They need to play sisters.

  • PeaceBang

She’s got a lot of GUTS to wear that dress. Get it? Guts? Because the dress looks like it’s a sartorial representation of intestines? Ha ha! I got a million.

  • amywinns

WOW do I ever hate that dress. Basic silhouette is good and it fits her are all the positive things I can possibly say about it. Ugh.

  • Is this even a dress?  It looks like a top with a skirt, and the hem of the shirt is showing through the skirt lining.  Note how the color seems to follow the basic blocking of the top.  And what is up with that hair.  HATE HATE!

    • j_anson

Oh, huh. I think you might be right. How sad.

  • Lina_bee

Something about her hair and makeup here seems weird. Like, she doesn’t look entirely like herself, and it’s completely distracting.  I agree the dress is kind of awesome  but badly lined. I might like to see it in another color palette.

  • MzzPants

The lining appears to be the same on the model.  Odd.

  • ballerinawithagun

Gorgeous details on the dress but those details would have been perfectly highlighted with a black lining. Notice in the photo at the lower part of the dress where the nude lining stops and all you see is black, it looks fabulous!

She is looking prettier all the time!

  • j_anson

What’s filling me with rage is that I think that’s the effect the designer intended – why else would you do that? The runway model has the same effect. What a nasty thing to do to a nice dress.

  • marilyn

She needs wacky shoes for this dress, like the runway model.  Also, the colors in the top don’t mach the colors in the bottom.  It is just off enough to make my teeth hurt.

    Beautiful girl, trainwreck dress.

  • BrooklynBomber

  • bububear

That’s her shirt tucked in showing through the top of the skirt, not a two-toned lining.   The lining should have a been a darker color to prevent that effect.

  • SignLadyB

My first thought was that the dress was arresting (that’s supposed to be a good observation) but as I continued to look at it I found first that the design panel in the bodice actually seemed to broaden and flatten her bosom. Again, the cutwork skirt was amazing but between the black portion of the lining and the lining being nude and not completely down to the hem I thought it was extremely poorly executed. Lovely color palette and good on her though.

  • Honestly I can’t get past THE EYE OF SAURON on her chest to notice the scary skirt…

  • ICFashionChic

Unfortunately, it’s like that on the model too but because Elizabeth’s legs are not as long, the dark part of the dress is around the model’s ovaries area and not her hoo haa.

  • EEKstl

Not in love with the top half but the skirt is interesting, tho vaguely vascular, non?

  • jilly_d

The hair!  I want to go to there.

  • TSkot

Nominee for ugliest dress of the year.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

If there was a dark background throughout as the underskirt – then perhaps.

  • rainwood1

I didn’t even notice the lining issue because I was so distracted by the blue runway going down her chest.  I agree with all those who were thinking anatomy class.  Eeeewww.

  • TieDye64

Ick! that skirt is just…wrong. And the top with it’s optical illusion thing? Is it supposed to hypnotize us into thinking this is fabulous? Fail.

  • turtleemily

Is it a dress or separates? The dark lining almost looks to me like if the top is a shirt tucked into the skirt.

  • Louise Bryan

It kind of gives the illusion of one giant “girl.”  This dress sort of seared my eyes right from the get go.

  • jw_ny

At 1st I thought she was wearing a body suit with an open lace skirt…then I thought how odd that her crotch is so high!  All that visual impact of the bold print up top and the busy lace skirt…and the eye goes right to the lady bits…just ain’t right.  😉

That top does very weird things/optical illusion to her chest.

  • Kayceed

I think this dress is horrid. The print on top, unsophisticated, the weird neon macrame on bottom, ugly. Wow do I not like this dress.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

it’s not even her fault, it’s the designer’s.
why the h-e-toothpick one-toothpick two did peter p, there, take a gorgeous dress [?] suit [?] pair o’ separates [?] & outright destroy whatever it is w/ that lining par un idiot? if you will. not only that, not only does it look bad, not only does it force the eye where that eye does not wish to meander [&, upon arrival, does not wish to linger] it also takes all focus away from the very complicated, very unusual dress & gloms it straight to her half-hidden babychucker. if you will, redux.

  • Megan Patterson

It looks like it does that on the model too.

  • understateddiva

I’m much more disturbed by the retro-cute hair and matchy pumps.  We’re gonna need to revoke her “edgy dress” pass.

  • ccm800

I think its separates. Its tucked and does the same on the model.

    • That is so NOT the shirt to tuck in. Though then I guess you lose the black waistband; it’s a lose-lose seperates issue.

  • bitterk

Wrong dress for her, wrong occassion

  • kikisayshi

    Love it on the model.

  • lesmaha

Horrible underlay on that dress.  That should have never left the designer’s workshop with that fabric underneath. Sloppy.
