Doctor Who’s Matt Smith and Karen Gillan in NYC

Posted on April 12, 2012

Darlings, in our ongoing efforts to be as transparent as possible, here are some pictures for nerds and fangurls to squee over while we have coffee and figure out what else to write about today. It’s Doctor Who‘s Matt Smith and Karen Gillan shooting the show’s 11,000th season in Central Park in NYC. We can’t stand the internetism “adorbs” but OMG! ADORBS!!!

Oh, and we were going to put this info at the bottom but then we realized how flakey nerds and fangurls get when squeeing over their obsessions, so we better state it now before your minds get all addled and you start walking into walls or touching yourselves inappropriately. Tom spent an hour last night chatting with his TV-writin’ pals Mo Ryan and Ryan McGee about the latest episodes of Mad Men and Game of Thrones for their “Ryan & Ryan” podcast. You can listen to the whole thing here. Yes, Tom is aware he sounds like a gay cartoon character.

It almost feels wrong for The Doctor to be wearing a puffy jacket, doesn’t it?

Oh that last picture is WAY too nerdy cute.  I wanna straighten his bowtie.

    • suzanne77

I wanna mess it up further and steam up his glasses and MUSS HIS HAIR! Rowr!

  • I want his jacket, and his shoes. NOW.  I needs them real bad. I’m heading to Paris on Saturday, and I NEEDS them.

    • Economie

You can buy the jacket and bow tie on Think Geek. No idea on the shoes.

    • Tafadhali

An exhaustive rundown of what he wears and where to find it. 🙂

      Have fun in Paris!

      •  Thanks. I’m to the, “driving everyone nuts with talking about it incessantly” stage.  Its my first trip there, and I’m about to burst with gleefulness.

        • kimmeister

I have relatives who live there, but haven’t been since 1999!  The Eiffel Tower was all covered in scaffolding as they were sprucing it up to ring in the year 2000.  I hope you have allocated sufficient time to the Louvre (if that’s your kind of thing) and that you revel in the pastries.  Just beware that they smoke like chimneys everywhere.

          •  I’m going with 3 friends who have been numerous times.  My idea of this trip is to just be there, wander about, and allow Paris to “happen” to me.  Oh I will make some obligatory stops, including the Louvre, but in the main, I am going to wander around aimlessly most of the trip. Of course there will be ample opportunities for eating, and drinking, and shopping.  lol

          • kimmeister

The women’s lingerie is TO DIE FOR but that’s neither here nor there for you!

          •  ROTFL.  Um, no, its not.  However I will be making pilgrimages to Balenciaga, Gautier, and a few others.  Just to say I did, since I doubt I could afford so much as a tie clip there.

Unsolicited advice: You should head to the 8th arrondissement immediately and go right to the Avenue George V (which is George the Fifth, so ‘George Cinq’)- last tima I visited there was, on that one block, a Louis Vuitton, Brioni, Armani, YSL, and Zegna, just off the top of my head. Plus it’s right off of the Champs Elysee.

I would suggest taking the Metro there, getting off to see the Arc de Triomphe, walking from there to Avenue George V, see everything there, and then go back to the Champs Elysee and walk allllll the way down to the Jardin de Tuileries and the Louvre.

Another option is to continue on the Avenue George V, go across the pont neuf bridge (which takes you to the 16th arrondissement) and walking to the Eiffel Tower. I have the most incredible pictures from this area…

ETA: Sorry for the unasked for opinions. Paris is my favorite place in the world, and I can’t stop myself from going on, at length.

          •  I totally appreciate it! And some of this may in fact come to pass!

My favorite thing was climbing the stairs of Notre Dame. Fabulous views and you’re in the midst of the gargoyles.

          • lovelyivy

This is pretty cool, plus if you go to the Musee Cluny you can see a ton of pieces that used to be at Notre Dame and are now housed at the museum. A bit boring, but still interested if you like to look at churches.

The Basilica of Sacre Coeur is pretty amazing too- the views at sunset are unreal!

My absolute favorite is probably the Church on St Germain des pres. It is more than 1500 years old, and one of the best examples of what churches looked like pre-Luther. The paint on the interior is incredible, and unlike anything you would ever see in the US.

I worked for a church so I went to see a lot of churches lol.

That is the best way to see Paris- I lived there for a year, and every day (when I wasn’t working) I would walk outside of my apartment (which was in the bell tower of a Cathedral on the Avenue George V- sometimes working for non-profits does not suck) and pick a direction to just walk in for two hours. I am pretty sure I managed to see 10% of everything i wanted to get to, even after a year. It was the best experience EVER. Bonne Voyage!

          •  Thanks, Lovely!

Oh kill me now. I writhe in envy. You’re not JUST going to Paris, you’re going in the absolutely ideal manner, IMO. (Short of going with a free month, several hundred thousand euro of mad money and an open return ticket, that is.)

            Enjoy. Splurge.

          • Oh I plan to do precisely that! I am going to nothing that is not indulgent, flirtatious, and perhaps just a trifle silly.

          • littlemac8

My best friend just got back from Paris and they experienced France by going to a central lost&found for objects perdu!  I think they left it on the Metro.  Anyway they DROVE there and filled out many forms in triplicate and found 8 yo darling Alice’s backpack.  However, the man at the lost and found asked how she could prove Alice was her daughter and that stumped her.  Eventually they got it back.  Bon voyage and bonne chance!

When not at its mercy, there is much to appreciate in the devilish artfulness of France’s talent for bureaucracy.

I just got back from there. It’s nice, but bring something for light rain. Also, buy a coat there, the clothes there are seriously adorable. I got two jackets and a ton of dresses.

Have so much fun on your trip. I just bought the app ParisPastry for my phone, so I can find the closest and highest-rated dessert wherever I am in Paris. (I’ll be a few months behind you, though.)

      • Loading ParisPastry as we speak! I’ll give you some highlights on my return. Thanks, sweetie!

        • travelingcat

Speaking of Paris pastries… My best friend is a pastry chef based in NYC. I went to Paris for the first time with her and at the time Pierre Herme was considered the best pastry chef in Paris. May still be, it’s just been awhile. If in your wanderings you stumble upon one of his shops, it’s a wonderful place to indulge. One of my favorite memories is having a raspberry tart on a park bench she brought me after a class and meeting with his staff. Have a wonderful time. I love your plan, getting lost in Paris is the best way to experience that magical place.

Agreed, that last picture is too much! In a good way!

I wish I was in NYC so bad!!! They really do look “adorbs” (couldn’t stop myself), is it really that cold in NY that they need puffy coats? I saw pics of Arthur Darvill and he one too.

    • MoHub

Yes! Pics of Arthur Darvill, please! One Rory is worth 10 Doctors!

  • Made. My. Morning.

  • RzYoung

    Who pinched his eyebrows?!

    • lizajane1776

He’s never had any. That was the one thing that worried me when they announced he was taking over the role. But he just works sooooo well, most of the time I don’t even notice it any more.

      •  Okay, THAT is what bothers me about his face!  Or at least it’s one thing.  He’s just… odd looking.  He’s pretty good as the Doctor, although I am a Tennant fan forever. 🙂

    • Dejah_Thoris

Holy Shit. I have NEVER noticed this, and I’ve watched all the eps at least twice, some even more. He was so enchantingly alien-looking to begin with, that other than his sly smile, his “oh, that was the wrong lever wasn’t it?” worried look, his childishly delighted look, and his grim tardis-of-the-apocalypse angry visage, the particular details of his face just didn’t compute.

  • My hubby has boots like those. I love them.

  • ChaquitaPhilly

    Just…Thank You!

  • Spicytomato1

Love her shoes, similar to the ones  I-can’t-remember-who was wearing them with the dress earlier this week. Are they a thing now? A Fall 2012 Trend, perhaps?

    • I want them too! But I am mostly jealous of her ability to wear them without making her feet look like boats. We’re the same height – she’s got to have feet about as big as mine! They’re adorable.

    • MilaXX

yes they are. I’ve found them in black, brown, metallic and they are affordable.  I think I saw them on either ASOS or Nordstrom website

    • Spring 2012 – they are all over the shops right now.

    • Anathema_Device

I splurged on a pair of Frye oxfords abut 4 months ago, but wish I had waited because so many varieties are available now. The Dr. Martens ones are making me swoon:

  • I’m so bitter I don’t work anywhere near Central Park because I was all set to spend my lunch break stalking them. I would full on SQUEEEEEE if I met Matt Smith. And full on do something else if I ever met Rory.

  • He’s wearing a girl’s puffy jacket

  • MilaXX

    • formerlyAnon

Yes, I’m totally entertained by how it looks like somebody said “it’s damn cold out today and I don’t want anyone wandering away into a coffee shop to get warm” and sent a PA to bring back coats for the cast.  I kind of doubt that’s what happened, but that’s what it looks like.

  • I love her hair. Reminds me that my roots are well and truly due a touch-up.

  • I LOVE THEM SO MUCH! They are so gorgeous in person it is ridiculous.

  • Anathema_Device

Well, thank you for not putting “totes” in front of “adorbs.”

I cannot stand the cuteness of these two together. The last shot of him reading on that wall vastly  improved my shitty morning.

And I would love to look like her just for one day.

  • ccm800

If he is a time lord – why isn’t the show called Dr. When?

  • Hum. I thought they were done filming the Amy Pond episodes, but maybe not.  Guess they aren’t up to the Christmas Special filming yet.

    • MoHub

That was my understanding as well. I was under the impression Amy and Rory were departing to live their own lives, and the Doctor would be getting a new companion. No word on River, though.

      •  i’m really ready for the amy-rory-river storyline to go somewhere else… somewhere far, far away.  i know i’m being a hater, but i never really bonded with amy pond and that makes me sad.  i still miss donna :/  she’s my absolute fave 🙂

  • Why are the Ponds back?  Seriously, they HAD an ending.  There’s no reason to bring them back for more episodes, give Matt someone new to play off!

    • Fay Dearing

Don’t worry. They’ve announced that there’s going to be a new companion this series. Amy and Rory are going to be around for the first half of the season, then the new companion is going to take over at Christmas or the episode after that. Moffat seems to be into not having a companion a season like RTD was.

  • Judy_J

Love, love, love the bow tie!

  • TheOriginalLulu

    This whole post is hilarious.
The pics-I don’t know about anything else, but she has really gorgeous hair.

  • But their puffy jackets match! That’s adorable!

  • Joyce VG

  • GorgeousThings

I love the picture of the two of them in a little tete-a-tete whilst the camera is rolling behind them. Squee!!!!

  • MilaXX

Just finished listening to the podcast. Glad to know I’m not the only one who watches GoT’s that needs to watch more than once to pick up everything going on.

  • I want her shoes!!! <3 She's so gorgeous.

  • glennethph

    Where’s Rory?!

  • lordandtaylor

I always thought he kind of looks like Frankenstein…with that high forehead and all. I think both of them need a quick trip to Lord and Taylor!

  • TieDye64

Oh, dear lord. Off the charts adorable!

  • Beyond cute as always, but this totally proves nobody looks great in a puffer coat.

    • Maggie_Mae

The first series of Sherlock was filmed in record-breaking cold weather.  There are shots of Benedict Cumberbatch & Martin Freeman between scenes in that “puffer” coats.  Benedict has a white one–worn over the famous Sherlock coat…

  • SatelliteAlice

That last picture actually made me squee out loud.  That doesn’t happen often.  He is just so precious it makes me melt.
