Dianna Agron in L.A.

Posted on April 06, 2012

Ooooh, Dianna isn’t looking too happy about being photographed right now so we’ll make this quick.

Glee’s Dianna Agron shopping at the Grove in LA.

We never really fell in love with that whole west coast-born thing of pairing big boots with little sundresses. It’s a look that  comes and goes, and each time it reappears we look at it and think, “Nope. Still don’t love it.” We don’t hate it as a look entirely, but it’s not as easy a look to pull off as you’d think and it doesn’t suit everyone.

This isn’t the red carpet, so we’ll just say the proportions aren’t right for the boots and that bulky cardigan thing she’s sporting should be taken out back and set on fire. Sweetie, that thing isn’t your friend.

As always, great bag and sunglasses, though.

Um, love the woman in the background changing into flip-flops.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UCLO5V2YD36T7QMPKOC7YXPOFU Erica

Yes, HER outfit looks quite cute, doesn’t it?

        • AthenaJ

I’m giving flip-flop girl an IN!

          • MilaXX

Bitter kittens have spoken; Flip flop lady IN, Diana OUT

            • P M

TLo should do an ‘IN or OUT: photobomb edition’, n’est ce pas?

          • LaylaSV

No joke. That girl is trés chic.

          • portlandmermaid

me too. Out of the way, Diana, we want to see the flip flop lady’s outfit.
Diana looks like she put on the sundress, got cold and kept layering. Worse than the sundress with boots is the dress worn over jeans. God I hate that look.

            • ballerinawithagun

              Thanks for pointing her out.

            • meowing

It’s been cold in the a.m. and hot in the p.m. here in southern CA, but there’s still no excuse for this ugly type of layering.  Another yea to flip flop lady–hope she’s a TLo munchkin and will enjoy seeing all our huzzahs to her!

      • BlondettaChick

        Yes! My thoughts exactly.

      • uprightcitizen

She almost looks like she just accidentally stepped on the flip flops, as if someone just left them there, and she’s trying to figure out what they are. She definitely steals the photograph. Plus, even though Diana looks the way a four-year old girl does on her first opportunity to pick out her own clothes (does ANY of that go together?), the woman in back is apparently dressed like Grace Kelly in the middle of the day on an L.A. street … which is even more odd.

        • Lilithcat

the woman in back is apparently dressed like Grace Kelly in the middle of the day on an L.A. street … which is even more odd

What’s odd about a white cotton skirt and a black pullover?  Besides, Grace must have worn something when she was on an L.A. street in the middle of the day!

          • alyce1213

Maybe it’s odd because simple, perfectly put-together chic is not what one usually sees on the street, which is why everyone is writing about it here.

        • alyce1213

I know — it’s like there’s a story to her picture, which makes it all the more interesting.  Wish Dianna wasn’t in the way.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OD35QQZNBPZJXWTCBY7N4EE7VY Sarah

Background lady definitely steals the shot.

      • joe_tey83

How sad it must be for Dianna to have her thunder stolen by a woman changing into flip-flops, a woman in the background no less.

        • MilaXX

Flip flop lady just looks better.

      • http://profiles.google.com/dandesun Erika Schultze

        Now THAT’S LA!

      • H3ff

Now that bitch is fabulous. I love a stark monochrome look like no one else.

        • AllisonAndStuff

Totally. And the flip-flops will work, too. Fierce one moment, breezy the next.

      • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

I hope she reads this site. Congrats, lady, hope we made your day!

      • butterflysunita

Yes, I wish Diane wasn’t blocking my view of her.  She looks quite stylish, and she’s changing into flip flops with such elegance and grace.

      • CrazyAuntie

A girl after my own heart……..

      • MadAboutMen

Agreed!  Flip flop girl fabulous all around.

        • DCSheehan

I daresay FF Lady is bordering on a werq.

      • miagain

        I agree… she’s the interesting one!!

    • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

I like western-style boots with sundresses, but not these big winter boots, and especially not with leggings. I will take the boots off her hands and pair them with skinny jeans, as nature intended.

      • http://www.facebook.com/mary.nease Mary Nease

I hate sandals and flip flops, but I have these awesome cowboy boots that I wear with summer dresses.

    • funkypeanut

      I want flip-flop lady’s other shoes.

      • LJCdoc

I do to. I’m a little obsessed with flip-flop lady. Is she changing? Or was she walking along, and suddenly found herself almost tripping over a pair of flip-flops, & is trying not to fall? As for Diana, welcome to SoCal. Students on may campus do this all the time. Sundress (usually no big ugly sweater), Uggs, and a scarf.

      • makeityourself

I have a pair of reptile Jimmy Choo pumps that look very similar. I love everything about flip-flop lady. Reminds me of Caroline (sp?) Bessette Kennedy with her black & white elegance and pulled-back hair.

    • janedonuts

Outfit is really too boring to give much thought to, but I do love those sunglasses.

      • kimmeister

Yes, they are the only redeeming part of her ensemble.

    • TieDye64

What the heck? A summer dress, winter boots and a chunky little cardigan that looks like fall. This is split personality dressing. Pick a season and stick with it. Love the shades, that’s about it.

    • MilaXX

If she had paired this with a simple shrug, I would have given it a pass since it is a girl on the street look. However, that sweater is the very definition of hiddy and should be taken out back and shot.

    • crash1212

I’m totally loving the woman behind Ms. A in the first frame. I love a black top/white skirt combo…she looks WAY cute…although I can’t tell if she’s pausing to put on flip flops or tripping over rogue street flip flops, or what. Anyways, she’s way cute and chic. As for Ms. A…as Uncle T & Lo say – great glasses, great bag.

    • Jasmaree

I like it. It’s very simple, but stylish and chic.

Oh, wait. We’re all talking about the lady in the background, right?

    • http://www.myblackfriendsays.com myblackfriendsays

I wouldn’t be happy to be photographed in that outfit either.

    • RebeccaKW

I like the dress with boots look, most of the time.  My biggest issue with this look is that cardigan.  It is ugly and clashes with the dress.

    • E_bee

I don’t think either the cardi or the boots are bad, per se, it’s just that there are two looks here that she shouldn’t have tried to put together. Personally, I’d ditch the dress, not the accessories. Switch out the dress for a simple white T, she would be fine. Maybe a little dull for a starlet, I don’t know, but plenty sharp for a normal person’s shopping day.

    • http://twitter.com/lenabena_ Elena

      Umm, gimme those sunglasses. Now.

    • janetjb

      I love the sunglasses.

I’m very happy to see the background woman stealing the show while taking off her heals.

      • mjude

i love when a bitter kitten notices something in the background!

    • LJCdoc

Perhaps there should be a new feature called “Ordinary people in the background that steal the photo from the famous people”, based on the number of comments here about flip-flop lady.

    • guest2visits

I like the boots with sundress thing; just not crazy about this pair.
      She looks pretty good.

    • MK03

UGH. She looks like a bag lady who dumpster-dives outside a Neiman Marcus.

    • http://twitter.com/asciident Melissa Brogan

I think there are plenty of cute boots-and-sundress pairings (but I’m a west coast girl at heart). This isn’t one of them. Not sure I like that dress at all, actually, although it’s hard to tell if it would work styled differently. That sweater is just horrible.

    • http://profile.yahoo.com/J2VE4NE2FY2BP4QD2XOYKJGLPI Laura

Well, I LOVE the sundress with the boots and tights thing (and I AM on the West Coast), but I don’t like the sweater…

    • nannypoo

If I were wearing that crappy outfit I wouldn’t look happy about being photographed either. There is not one element here that goes with any other element. On the bright side, I’m glad her hair isn’t pink anymore.

    • Lisa

Everything looks kinda big on her, the boots included.  Plus, I got that dress from Express in 1992, so maybe that’s why she looks pissed.

    • granddelusion

I’m more interested in the woman behind her. Can we have that story please?

      • sagecreek

Hee! I just typed in the same thing!

      • holdmewhileimnaked

just somebody walking around the grove in heels, apparently looking at someone else’s lost silver metal zori.
dont ask me how that happened [or why she is so transfixed by it].

        • ZnSD

I think she’s just trying to negotiate a quick shoe switch. ;)

          • holdmewhileimnaked

may be. hell, i’ve done that a thousand times if i’ve done it once. maybe even at the grove.

ps. i remember once in the rain switching from zoris [plastic yellow two buck zoris this time] into platforms & somehow between the car & the curb they wound up floating all the way down the street, so fast i never saw them again.

            • ZnSD

that’s brilliant and hilarious all at the same time.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

have been wearing that combo* since i was, i dunno, seven or something? i thought for a sec it was punkrocker born, of combat boots & rayon housedresses, but it precedes that. it’s hippie born. of the same housedresses & only slightly different boots. i didnt know it came straight outta LA but that makes sense. straight outta the canyons, then.

as an aside, i liked that lang bag so much i went to ebay to see if i could find it. no dice, but if anyone’s interested theres a really nice theyskens theory one available in a good, sturdy deep blue starting at two hundred bucks.

      edited to add:
      * but w/ better dresses & better sweaters. not a better bag though. i almost thought the boots were good, then i looked at them again. no. squishy.

    • sagecreek

Honestly, I’m much more interested in the lass with the white skirt and black top just to the right of DA. Much better look! And she appears to have come with her city-walking sandals, smart gal!

ETA: Oops. I see I am about the 37th person to say this. Unks, find that girl!

    • DominoEstella

      wow, awful.

    • marilyn

Tomorrow must be laundry day.  This looks like the oddball collection of clean clothes that she has to wear because nothing else is clean.  The boots and the sweater could be worn together, but the dress just looks dowdy with them.  An expensive handbag won’t save this mess.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

My West-Coast roots must be showing because I think she looks pretty cute (except for the shrug thing)

    • TomBord

bag! oh i thought it a pup tent.

    • Lilak

Downside of carrying a high-toned handbag is, the rest of your get-up had better look pretty sharp.

    • funkypeanut

Hello, Dianna. Look at you. Now look at flip-flop lady. Now back to you. Now back to flip-flop lady. Sadly, you aren’t flip-flop lady.

    • http://twitter.com/dianasof Diana

can flip flop lady become a meme? like, she’s photoshopped into the background of every awful celebrity outfit picture.

      • ZnSD

Exactly my first thought. Flip flop lady is KILLAH.

      • alyce1213

        Great idea!

    • lifetime_student

That sweater should only be worn by someone at home with flu and should be accessorized with tissues tucked up the sleeves. The dress might work without the sweater and leggings, but I’m afraid I have to say OUT. I do love flip flop lady’s outfit, however.

      • sleah_in_norcal

is she changing into or out of those flip-flops or what?

    • sleah_in_norcal

this looks like something i would wear in early spring when it’s first warm out so i put on a sundress and sunglasses to sit on the deck in the sun and have my coffee, but then in the house it’s cold again so i put on a sweater my mom made and some long underwear/tights and that’s better, but then i have to take the dog out so i put on boots because it’s muddy outside and i have no excuse for the purse.  but i’m sixty-four and i live in the mountains and hardly ever see anyone.  until the summer tourists arrive.  anyways…

    • LuisaNL

Dianna’s outfit is tragic. Lady in the background, very stylish!

    • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

I know a lot of Queensland girls do the sundress/tights/long-sleeve tshirt thing too, because they don’t really need a whole separate winter wardrobe, but I really don’t like it. I LOVE packing away the summer dresses and pulling out the autumn/winter colours and fabrics!

    • velomango

Does anyone else *detest* handbags that have a shoulder/crossbody strap AND short handles? I hate the look of a satchel with a long strap hanging down from it – and so many handbags are designed this way. Tis fugly, IMHO.

      • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

I more than detest them and will never buy a bag like that. I can’t understand the appeal of the crooked elbow, especially when you have a perfectly good shoulder strap just hanging uselessly from your purse.

    • bellafigura1

I love the stylin’ lady in first pic death-gripping the bushes as she can. not. wait. to get into those flip flops.  Been there!

    • http://twitter.com/Wint3rhart Winterhart

I wouldn’t be happy about being photographed in a floral dress and ugly cardigan (complete with inexplicable sleeves) either.  Bet she’s thinking “damnit, the ONE day I didn’t do the laundry…”

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

Plus, the added horror of the black tights.

    • MzzPants

Background woman is saying, “If Diane Argon can walk around looking like that, then SCREW heals!  I’m wearing flops!”

      • UptownNippy

I don’t think Ms Flip Flop Lady Chic even noticed frumpy Diane Argon.  She is too busy livin’ her fab life   and steals the scene.

    • Ogden1990

Flip flop lady is getting redi for a pedi.

    • alyce1213

      Dianna is sadly schlumpy.
Flip-flop lady is totally fabulous and chic, head to toe.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Reminds me a little of Nashville club chic…sundresses with cowboy boots.  Only you need a push-up bra to really make the look work.

    • TheOriginalLulu

Oh lord. I hate this kind of look. I see a lot of girls dressed like this here in NY. The kind of artsy girls I think. This time of year they usually have an ugly knitted scarf around their necks too and a Starbucks cup to complete the look.
It’s like a raid the trunk in your grandmother’s attic kind of look. Pile on as many ugly pieces as you can and don’t bother looking in the mirror.

    • UptownNippy

I wish that shot didn’t have Argon in it so we could concentrate on the Chic Lady behind her.

    • PhillipWilde

Meh. I think she’s kind of adorable here.

    • amanda crow

I am always trying to think of ways to wear my summer clothes in the winter, so I can’t hate on the boots and cardigan idea with dress too much.

BUT. It is the idea that I like, and decidedly NOT Dianna’s execution. No bueno, muchacha.

    • http://www.thirteen.org/downton-abbey/category/the-downton-dish/ Gotham Tomato

When I clicked on this, the first thing I thought was that I’d love to know where she got those sunglasses. Then I scrolled down and, of course, you boys had thought to post the info.

      You think of everything!

    • http://twitter.com/nkk Nikki

That boots with a dress thing is SO L.A./Southern CA, sorry, but I hate being grouped with that whole bunch…

      LOVE the sunnies though!
