Cillian Murphy for Clash Magazine

Posted on April 06, 2012

We’re going in a different direction for your Mid-day Meat post; a more refined direction. Delicate. Sensitive.

Cillian Murphy featured in the May 2012 issue of Clash Magazine photographed by Christian Oita and styled by Matthew Josephs.

We’ve never encountered him in a role where he hasn’t completely captured our attention. And that boy has a FACE on him. So much so that they barely bothered with the clothes. They should put his face in the credits:

“Cillian is wearing a shirt by Tom Ford, pants from Armani, a Burberry Prorsum jacket* and a face supplied by nature (presumably).”

And unlike a lot of attractive men (but exactly like a lot of attractive women) he knows just how to work that face to its best effect. You really can’t take your eyes off it.

See? We don’t just go for the jut-jawed caveman types! There’s room for plenty of types to sigh over. We are large, we contain multitudes.

*Totally made up clothing credits, before anyone asks.

We are large, we contain multitudes.” hehehehe.

Also, he creeps me out. He’s good looking, yes. But he creeps me out. Wasn’t he the creepy crazy guy in that one batman movie?

    • Isy

Me too!! He’s beautiful but something about him give me nightmares. And I haven’t even seen Batman anything.

    •ía-Gavello/1253586868 Lucía Gavello

Indeed, but I think the psycho face is part of his charm, if that makes any sense. The ice cold stare, tight smirk, looks like he could SNAP in a second… maybe I need to see a proffessional XD.

      • janedonuts

I’m picking up what you’re laying down here, sister.

    • krelnick

He’s got those serial killer eyes…  GAH!

      • Ginger

My son has the same clear ice-blue eyes that look spooky in pictures.  However, the iciness of his eyes is tempered by the freckles on his nose.  SOOOO precious. :)

        • Candigirl1968

He definitely has a “not of this world” look.  If they were casting a movie where pretty aliens steal our souls with their intense gazes, he’d be the alien leader.

        • adnama79

Well, teach him to treat people kindly – they’ll be willing to do anything for him and it will be tempting to take advantage.  My brother has gorgeous eyes, but fortunately ended up with a woman who can keep him in line!  We all breathed a sigh of relief.  😉

    • Bridget Smith

Oh, he’s SO unnerving. Even when he’s just playing a normal person (which is, honestly, rather rare), he’s a little bit creepy. I think it’s the eyes.

But the man is a very, very talented actor, no denying that.

      • doodle_bug

I think it’s his nose.  I come from a family with those really light, clear eyes so they don’t bug me at all.  That chiseled jaw, those lips and cheekbones and eyes all read so UNF! and then he’s got an Olsen Twins nose.  It’s too manufactured, perfect and girly…that takes him to uncanny valley for me.

    • Carla_Charlton

Have you seen “Sunshine”?  He was really good in that and really appealing — not creepy at all.  He has a look (maybe it’s the styling of these photos) that reminds me of a 60s mod.

      • mountainFashionista

Yet, in an ironic twist, that movie is creepy as HELL!

      • rynerman

Great movie and he is just so SO good in it.

    • Jessica | Surely Sonsy

Yes, exactly! his role in the batman is all i can think abut when i see him. so as luscious has his lips may be, he just kinda freaks me out.

    • RebeccaKW

Yes, but even as the crazed Scarecrow, I thought he was hot.  That worries me about me a little.

    • VicD

See him in Girl with the Pearl Earring.  He is freaking gorgeous, and seems like a classy, thoughtful guy.

    • miagain

It’s his eyes…  they are spooky.  It’s as if he’s staring right through you to your soul…. brrrrrr…. just felt a chill!!

    • joe_tey83

He creeps me out too. He reminds me of Norman Bates or some other character with lines like ‘I like to watch the lights go out of their eyes when I strangle them.’

    • fatima_bird

I was just watching Batman Begins last night and I was thinking, “Dear Lord, those cheekbones are unholy.”

    • mrspeel2

Creeps me out too! Not too badly in the color shots but in the B & W ones, he looks like one of those gunslingers in the old daguerreotype photographs. Who is he anyway?

    • adnama79

Scarecrow in Batman and a psycho in Red Eye.  But hot in 28 Days Later.

    • Aisa Ginger Jake Psenicnik

yea he was the scarecrow in the first batman….. and I loved every second.

    • fungstyle

It’s totally his eyes. They’re hypnotic but in a way that’s a bit unsettling. For me anyway.

  • Karen

I have no idea who he is, but my god, he’s stunning!

  • Sandisan

    YUM.  That is all.

  • geekgirl69

He was the creepy, crazy guy in Red Eye.  don’t know about Batman.  He is beautiful  It’s the huge light eyes that take it to the uneasy side of beautiful.

    • Laurie Bergman

“the uneasy side of beautiful” is a spot-on description!

    • Whever

Great description- “the uneasy side of beautiful” could also work really well for Rufus Sewell, who has some of the same off-kilter beauty to him.

    • JosephLamour

He should play Prince in a movie.

      • Heron

THANK YOU.  He looks too much like Prince, but like 3 feet taller, obviously.

      • filmcricket

He looks like the love child of Prince and Peter Dinklage in these.

      • mom2ajs5

When I first glanced at the small bw picture on the home page, I thought it was Prince!

        • ballerinawithagun

Prince was my first thought also…well after Wow!

  • Sammi M

He is just exquisite, and so are the photos. His eyes are what get me, mmm. This + Dita Von Teese = a great start to a Friday.

  • foodycatAlicia

I’ve only seen him in 28 Days Later, but he was amazing in that. He doesn’t have a huge range of looks, but within the range he’s gorgeous. I am such a sucker for dark hair & blue eyes.

  • vanjar

Great face, gorgeous eyes. You guys have excellent taste in men. Love the photo’s, keep me them coming. :)

  • stilly001

Can you imagine being in an argument with this guy? He’d stare at me for 5 seconds; I’d start babbling. Beautiful eyes, but a little creepy…

  • Kiltdntiltd

    I want.

  • Claire Haley

Love him. Wish he was in more movies. He was really on a streak the year he was in Red Eye and Batman Begins but besides Inception he hasn’t done much (besides tiny indies and straight-to-DVD flops) in recent years.

    • Bridget Smith

Some of those indies are great, though. Intermission is really entertaining, and he plays a real actual normal person! Breakfast on Pluto and The Wind That Shakes the Barley are both incredibly difficult to watch but very good.

Also, he had an uncredited cameo in TRON which was supposed to be a set-up for a larger role in the sequel, but who knows if that’ll actually happen.

      • Claire Haley

Oh I love Intermission and Breakfast on Pluto, and The Wind That Shakes the Barley was good too. But those are from 2003, 2005 and 2006, respectively. I’m thinking of more recent movies like Peacock (which was a pretty ridic movie), Watching the Detectives (which was somewhat charming) and The Edge of Love.

        • Bridget Smith

Oh man, Keira Knightley was so fabulous in The Edge of Love, until everything went to hell. Her lipstick in the first half of that movie is just incredible, and I LOVE the scene where she’s singing in the tube station. Her Welsh accent is also adorable. But the plot? Yeah, no.

I haven’t seen Peacock, but on paper it looks great – love the cast. It’s not? I guess I won’t watch it, then.

          • Claire Haley

It’s a very… weird movie. A lot of suspension of disbelief is required in terms of the plot. It’s not horrible, but not exactly good.

        • julnyes

Breakfast on Pluto – where I realized he is not only a fantastic actor, but also a prettier woman than me :/

        • H3ff

You should see Sunshine. It got very mixed reviews but I loved it.

          • jabes

Loved Sunshine, too! When I finished watching it, I immediately watched it again, and then watched it with the commentaries.

      • jmw1122

BoP and TWTSTB are excellent movies, I wish more people would watch them.

He was also part of the man candy festival that was the craptastic In Time. So much pretty, yet so so awful. Unfortunately he didn’t have any scenes with Matthew Bomer. Though that might be a good thing, I think my brain might’ve melted from all the pretty on one screen if that’d happened.

        • Claire Haley

If you want to experience a great Meeting of the Man Candy, watch Girl With a Pearl Earring. Both Cillian AND Colin Firth. Both in long wigs, though. But it’s a great movie.

          • jmw1122

I didn’t know Cillian was in that! Hmm, might have to re-think my anti- ScarJo stance to see that one now.

          • Claire Haley

Scarlett has very little dialogue if that helps, though she does have a fake British accent (even though it takes place in Delft). That was the first movie I saw Cillian in, and obviously it made me a huge fan.

      • H3ff

I almost died when I saw him near the start of Tron Legacy. I hope to God Tron 3 goes ahead.

      • MinAgain

I attended the showing of “Breakfast on Pluto” at the Toronto International Film Festival, and he and Liam Neeson attended with Neil Jordan (Bono was there, too, for Irish solidarity, I suppose).  You cannot imagine how tiny Cillian looked standing next to Liam.  But still pretty as a picture.

    • Jen Alien-Spouse

I think he does a fair amount of theater too – And he’s bloody good on stage, so that’s something to be encouraged!

  • DominoEstella

  • Anna Daugherty

One of the most beautiful men alive. But scary.

  • librarygrrl64

Meh. VERY talented, but way too skinny to give me The Feelings.

  • Alli

Oh my he is lovely. I’m just going to print out that second picture and tape it next to my bed now.

  • AlexisPayne

Oh, I’ve had a crush on him for the longest time. He’s beautiful and slightly sinister/dangerous. Those eyes, and cheekbones, and lips, and freckles, and accent. SWOON.

    • Ginger

Freckles?  What?  Where?  Did they photoshop out his freckles?  Assholes……

      • AlexisPayne

Ha, I think they’re just more prominent in some rolls

  • Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Definitely handsome, but I’m with everyone else, those eyes are borderline freaking me out.

  • YourBaloneyDontGotNoSecondName

He was buck-nekkid in 28 Days Later!  Full frontal.  Very pretty everywhere.  He has one scene where his heartbreak is conveyed only through his eyes.  It’s lovely.  28 Days Later is also one of the best and scariest zombie movies ever, and the zombies aren’t even what is scary.

    • Sara Munoz

Ok. You’ve convinced me. I will see that now.

  • Paula Berman

He is a beautiful man. I just wish they hadn’t gone for the dead-eyed doll look on the cover.

    • Alisa Rivera

I agree, the cover photo makes him look like a wax mannequin.

  • Micaela Cannon

God I’ve been in love with him for so long, and it’s always upset me that so few people know who he is. When he was Batman Begins I almost lost my shit, and then Nolan cast him in Inception, I seriously did. He’s so friggin captivating. LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE.  And yes he is sort of scary but. UGH. I love him.

  • AthenaJ

I feel like the perfect backdrop for him would be in some out of the way, dimly-lit Paris cafe… drinking a bottle of wine, reading Dostoyevsky, and brooding…

  • ChaCha_70

That first picture is swoon-worthy. He’s absolutely stunning in photos but not as much on film. Great actor though!

  • Gus Casals

He does nothing for me. Actually, he kind of creeps me out, specially in the movies. I really don´t get the hard on Nollan has for him.

  • Jennifer L.

He can work the angles of his face to transform into creepy in completely realistic ways, but at the same time, it’s the kind of creepy that you think, maybe he just needs some more hugs. He’s the reformable villan who makes you sigh wistfully as he gets thrown off a cliff/stabbed in the throat/bludgeoned with a table leg.

  • gabyripple

Oooh yes. I usually am not in accord with the TLoins (sorry Lo, but it worked so well!) but here I am in perfect accord. I have always thought Cillian Murphy was so hot. And such a good actor. And so hot. Plus, I’m a comic nerd, and he was probably the best part of Batman Begins.

  • merciblahblah

He reminds me of Prince in the last photo, for some reason. Not the guy for me – he’s too creeptastic.

  • gabyripple

Also, Breakfast on Pluto. ’nuff said.

    • DonnaL

I thought he was really good in that, playing a trans woman.  I usually hate it when they cast non-trans men as trans women, but I was impressed.

  • RebeccaKW

LOVE.  His eyes.  Those lashes.  Those lips.  Hypnotizing.  Ovaries exploding.

I love that they didn’t photoshop his face (too much).  These shots shows skin texture, some forehead lines.  Like a real person.

  • Elizabeth Wiggs Maas

He could be Angelina Jolie’s brother – I’ve always thought that about him. He’s just stunning. (And I don’t mean her actual brother, the one she did weird kissing with…shudder.)

  • YoungSally

I don’t know — at least in the first photo he looks like Prince after he turns into a walker.

  • cjcris23

I think he’s incredibly attractive — and totally creepy. I can’t get past him as Scarecrow in Batman Begins. It’s a shame because he’s so good looking.

  • VioletFem

Love this guy, and I agree he is a phenomenal actor. Also, I rarely say this about most guys, but he looks really good with facial hair.

  • Elyse Klova

Props on the Whitman quote! Love you guys : )

  • Sara Munoz

Why I do declare! I believe this is the first time the Kittens have been treated to a serving of Cillian. Thank you kind sirs!

  • alyce1213

He does have a gorgeous face, but I can’t get past the eyeliner.  It’s creeping me out.

  • soren

Love him.  I don’t really understand why people think he’s creepy looking.  Are they just intimidated by that much beauty?

    • MilaXX

Sometimes when he is clean shaven he does cross the line from pretty to creepy. I think it’s a combo of too perfect skin/full lips and large eyes.

  • Emily Scott

Ooo, excellent choice. I’ve always found men who are a bit offbeat to be the most attractive, and Cillian Murphy definitely fits the bill. At first glance he seems almost delicate, but the way he knows how to work that slight creepiness gives him an edge. I know that puts some people off, but I think it’s sexy.

Does he have a movie coming up? I’m a little surprised to seem him getting a photo spread, not that I’m complaining!

    • Claire Haley

“Red Lights” with Robert De Niro and Elizabeth Olsen, coming out in May.

  • sleah_in_norcal

i’m not familiar with him, but i’d like to be.  he looks like a poet.

  • Kate4queen

He looks like all the Irish boys I went to school with in England-so of course I think he’s gorgeous :)

  • DiverK

Is there something wrong with being clean shaven?  I like beards, and I like a clean shave, but this in between thing is over.

    • formerlyAnon

From your lips to God’s ears – but I fear it’s not.

  • Sunshine16

I’ve always found him to be arresting, but his eyes freak me out a little.  Not the actual eyes (which are gorgeous), but the eyelids.  I always wonder if he had major recontructive work done on his eyelids…kinda like women who can’t step away from the plastic surgeon’s table…This, however, is the best I’ve seen him look.

  • andy

“We are large, we contain multitudes.”

Oh my. Don’t hurt yourselves, fellas.

  • andy

“We are large, we contain multitudes.”

Oh my. Don’t hurt yourselves, fellas.

  • Rebecca

    God, he is beautiful.

  • Rebecca

    God, he is beautiful.

  • Aaminah Khan

    He has phenomenal eyes.

  • Catherine H.

The last picture tells me he’s going to be a sexy old man someday.

  • janedonuts

Oh, I love love love love love him! Thank you for this! He has such a captivating presence.

  • giiiirrrr

He’s aging very nicely.  I think a little rugged to balance the pretty is going to make him positively yummy.

  • Jen Hughes

I’ve been crushing on that boy for years. He is STUNNING.

  • MzzPants

I love to watch him in films.  Those eyes are riveting.  And that last photo is beautiful.

  • MilaXX

I have to admit I prefer him with a bit of scruff rather than clean shaven. Those eyes are just so mesmerizing!

  • formerlyAnon

He is arresting. His eyes border on creepy, I guess because they are large enough to show off how light they are.

  • McSpanky

I’d catch a grenade for him/ Make lemonade for him/ Take him home and just cradle him…Oh sorry. God I love him more than moondrops on kittens and whiskers on roses.

  • guest2visits

He’s gorgeous. But I’m wondering if it’s eyeliner in the final pic that’s making him look so spooky.

  • RedRaven617

For some reason that last photo made me think of Prince. The same intense look I guess.

  • gabbilevy

He’s always creeped me out a bit but WOW these are stunning. And those EYES.

  • TAGinMO

    He is objectively striking, yes, but he does less-than-nothing for me. Apparently my tastes run slightly more vanilla. {Sigh}

  • Lilak

My first nansecond glance at the b+w pic on the main page, I thought it was Prince . . . . Heeee!

  • Kathryn

I would call Cillian Murphy the braised pheasant of man-meat.  He is delicate and refined in a way that everyone can appreciate but no one actually wants to have for dinner.

    • Elena Krafcik

I have to politely disagree – I DO actually want to have him for dinner. And breakfast. And lunch. And a midnight snack.

    • Jaeda Laurez

No, he’s more like ribs- I don’t eat them often, but I lick the bone CLEAN when I do.

  • Erika Schultze

I find him endlessly fascinating. He seems to play bad guys a lot but even as he was the Scarecrow in ‘Batman Begins’ he was GREAT and Batman needs scary-ass villains to overcome.

His eyes should come with a warning label.

  • Amy Ellinger

i’ll be in my bunk. for a while……

  • Jennifer Worick

He looks like Prince in these photos.

  • Robbyn Hopewell

OMG! He’s the love child of Prince! Look again at those eyes…

  • lilazander

I fell in deep love with Cillian Murphy upon watching “Breakfast on Pluto”. I am happy to seehim as capturing and beautiful as ever. Gross, but I am sallivating…

  • Shawn EH

    His eyes are ah-mah-zing!

  • kimmeister

    Those eyes are hypnotic.

  • theafternoonknows

I’ve been told by several (okay a LOT of) people that my husband looks like him. Which has kinda creeped me out and I’ve never really seen it. Because my husband is FAR from creepy. And not as delicate or pouty as Cillian. So thank you for this. You’re helping me a) see the resemblance and b) start to accept it!

  • Presumptuous Insect

Alright, after seeing what’shisname with the supposedly large dick the other day, I have to say, I am sick to death of this fuzz face look. Either grow it out properly or shave it off. It just makes you look dirty and smelly.

  • Phyllis Craine

The face yes but a nose that perfect can’t be natural

  • Marie Ee

I WANT HIM TO CREEP ON ME. If he had the kind of psychotic break he is giving in these photos, I want me some of that.

  • sockandaphone

i saw these earlier this week in tumblr and i died. his eyes are UNREAL.

  • LesYeuxHiboux

I love him in a way I cannot discuss in front of my husband.

  • Caitlin

  • JoannaOC

it’s not just his looks, it’s also that voice. such a fan of his work.

  • onyxkatze

Unf. I always thought he was Delicious.
    Yes, with a capital D.

  • quiltrx

Ah, those EYES.  He is a tad creepy, though, which I do think is part of the appeal.  Good actor, too.

  • ziarah

I love me some Cillian Murphy. He was SUPER creepy in Disco Pigs, though. Do not see that movie. I agree he was great in the amazing Sunshine. He was also in 28 Days Later (awesome), and played a drag queen in Breakfast on Pluto, which I didn’t make it all the way through…

  • Pants_are_a_must

He is gorgeous, amazing, beyond talented and TINY in person. To see him perform live is to understand why actors are today’s royalty.

  • TieDye64

Wow, these are really beautiful. I especially like the last photo. He does have an intensity that makes him rather mesmerizing, doesn’t he? He seriously creeped me out in the Batman movie. Big time. Still, amazing photos.

  • P. Capet

    different and lovely

  • bass

i would unashamedly wreck this man.

    • Jaeda Laurez

      Everyday and twice on Sunday.

  • Susan Crawford

What a gorgeous face it is, indeed! Those eyes – phew!

  • Candy Kane

He truly is a beautiful man. I just want him to come to my house and sit still so I can stare at him all day…that came off a lot creepier then I intended. He’s good-looking is what I’m saying.

  • Raistlinsama

He is stunning. With that face and those eyes… [service message: brain drowned in icy blue sea. please call later]

  • Lilia Murphy

I’ve been in love with Cillian Murphy since I was 19. When I was 19 Aer Lingus had cheap flights round trip to Ireland so I went to Ireland in January. I saw an ad saying that he was going to be in a play in Dublin in March. Since, the tickets were so cheap I went back to Ireland in March to see him in Playboy of the Western World. He’s an amazing actor and he’s just as beautiful in person. I sat in the 2nd row so I could be really close to the stage lol.

  • hearkentoit

I love him. I’ve even watched Red Eye several times just for Cillian, and that movie is not good. He’s a wonderful actor and I have the world’s biggest giggly schoolgirl crush on him and his knife-sharp cheekbones.

  • Vera

He just made my “Actors to Get to Know” list.

  • bellafigura1

Interesting actor, yummy to look at, no remix to ignition.

    • FashionShowAtLunch

plus one million points for the remix to ignition reference.

  • AdrienneD

If ever there was a jawline that deserves to shine, it is Murphy’s.  I dislike stubble on most men, particularly men with strong chins.  For some reason, this stubble annoys me even more than most, because it makes Murphy, to my eye at least, look semi-juvenile, like a middle schooler trying to be a hipster.  That said, he is still incredibly beautiful and talented, and in interviews, down to earth.

  • mozzer0906

He is beautiful, no doubt about it.  His eyes are captivating, but his lips are pretty spectacular too.

  • Larkin21

He looks like the love child of Prince and Viggo Mortensen. Very hot.

  • Snickleboom

And he has an accent, so he wins at life.

  • terekirkland

Love him! He is the original “Kitten” (Breakfast on Pluto, anyone?) So right, he knows how to give good face. Love the eyes in the last pic! Amazing!

  • bitterk

Mesmerizing indeed. We don’t see enough of him for sure.

  • Thombeau

Love him! And love you guys for posting him! (Well, I love you anyway, but you know that!)

  • Amy Ennis

I have found the actor to play Christian Grey. I hope he’s chosen because he looks exactly what I had in my mind.

  • Lu Sousa

hes uniqué….his eyes…creeps me out too but i love it 😉

  • ErinnF

His wedding ring RUINS that second picture! 😉

  • Fred D Brazzell

Those gorgeous eyes just cut right through the very core of my being

  • frankystein123

I’m definitely gay for this gorgeous man. Does he even age?
