WERQ: Nicole Kidman in Erdem

Posted on March 08, 2012

Y’know, sometimes, as a fashion blogger, you just have to let go of your rules and complaints. Sometimes, no matter how much we may bitch about dresses that match hair colors, or how tired we are of black lace, or even how pre-tired we’re getting of the sudden new micro-trend for pointy-toed shoes…

Nicole Kidman on her way to dinner in an Erdem dress.

Erdem Pre-Fall 2012 Collection

… sometimes it all comes together in a manner that’s so impossible to argue against that a couple of bloggers just have to throw their principles out the window and say, “GIRL! You WERQ that list of common T Lo  complaints!”

She does look good here, gotta hand it to her.

  • Sobaika Mirza

Loooooooooove. She looks so very chic.

  • Margo Anderson

Her hair is awful.  Put down the Bump-its, Nicole.

    • xmixiex

      huh?

  • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Too bad she’s got hanger bumps.

    • Diane_G

Sara, I stared at your comment for a minute or two, trying to figure out what “hanger bumps” were until I saw her shoulders. Kind of surprised she couldn’t steam those puppies out.

      • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

I considered adding “on her shoulders” to the comment, but I’m not gonna lie, I was in a hurry to post. :)

      • uprightcitizen

Not really sure those ARE hanger bumps. When you’re extremely thin (and let’s face it, she’s as much of popsicle girl as any of the frighteningly thin women in Hollywood), your clavicle’s shape becomes very apparent, even in clothes. I’m a guy, and have been that thin before (without attempting it) and had my whole skeleton show up like that in lightweight clothes. I really think that’s the bone structure of her shoulders showing through. Most people just aren’t used to seeing it because most people carry a little more meat on their bones there.

        • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Ooh, that’s possible. She is rather skinny.

        • http://vvatima.livejournal.com/ murt

Yes I think it’s her clavicle – it’s just her bone structure though, not so much how thin she is… I’m not crazy thin and my clavicle is very prominent as well. Plus I think she’s put on weight and is looking very healthy now.

Which is the reason I sometimes hang clothes inside out.

    • ccm800

that may be her razor sharp collar bone

  • http://www.facebook.com/charlotte.horseman Charlotte Horseman

I love it too.  Only complaint (come on! we gotta have one or its just no fun!) is that it’s such a “fall” dress – it’s gorgeous and would be even better worn in the actual fall.

    • luciaphile

I don’t know where she was when this pic was taken, but it’s darned cold here. I know I should be breaking out springlike clothes, but when the temps are still in the low 30s…

    • dress_up_doll

I agree, it does look a bit autumnal. Perhaps better suited for a posh Thanksgiving dinner with friends? Anywho, she does look pretty fabulous.

    • Zaftiguana

I wonder if she might be in Australia where it’s essentially autumn (a couple of weeks from the equinox, but close enough). I always wonder about that with Aussies.

      • H3ff

Judging by the car licence plate in the last picture, she was probably in Italy.

        • Zaftiguana

Smell you, Nancy Drew! Nice catch. So yeah, unless internationally imported car service is a new trend I don’t know about, probably not autumn.

    • https://twitter.com/Gayer_Than_Thou Gayer Than Thou

Is she in Autralia?  It would be fall there.

  • Sara__B

That’s a bad hair cut/color/style. Other than that, she’s definitely WERQing that list of common complaints.

  • Zaftiguana

This is the best her hair color has look in…maybe forever. And she can really pull off that waistline in a way few other women can. Very much her dress.

  • SewingSiren

The dress does suit her very well. My only complaint is that the gold (jersey) shows every little mark. Note the underarm area. Maybe she’s had  a flash.

    • kimmeister

      Whoa, good catch.

  • kentiesgirl

Looking fab, but I think I can see your extensions hon. Unless the butt head hairstyle is a thing. Like, a double bumpit?  Am I the only one seeing that? Maybe it’s just the camera angles. Otherwise, very, very nice.

And please don’t let those super pointy toe things be a thing again.  My toesies hurt just thinking about them.

    • Dejah_Thoris

What, you don’t think it’s perfectly acceptable for a person’s toes to be at right angles to each other?

I didn’t realize that top-of-the-head fluffing indicated extensions, I thought it was something “older” women did to hide thinning hair. My mom was a hairdresser and had a lot of older clients who wanted the bouffant hair specifically for that reason. Although I suppose that might also be the reason one would get extensions.

      • kentiesgirl

If you look at the part in the hair then the height on each side, I thought that’s where they generally clip or weave them in. If it was just teased it would start at the roots, wouldn’t it? I honestly have no idea what the criteria for a bouffant is. I keep thinking beehive.

Re: Toes. You’re right. Shame on my unfashionable self. :D

I think she’s got extensions in and it’s been teased…. Poor Nicole’s hair has been thinning for a long time. I struggle with it as well so I can identify.

          • Qitkat

            Me too (the thinning) :(
I’ve actually had to give up my bangs (which I loved) and grow them out. They were just too skimpy no matter what tricks I tried.

  • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Yep, She looks stunning. Can’t complain a bit.

  • Anathema_Device

“Pre-tired” LOL!!!  I love the dress, save for the top/underlayer color. A little on baby-poop spectrum for me, but I like the overall look.

  • Spicytomato1

She looks prettier and more natural than I’ve seen her in a while. The dress is beautiful from afar but up close I think it looks a little cheap.

  • Vaniljekjeks

I like it.  And she should absolutely keep her hair that color.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2P2ANLRZ6YAVGONA36I2AQJYGI VicD

Love the colors on her, but does it seem too tight?  I can’t understand how someone SOOOOOO thin constantly looks as if she need to go up one size.  This dress looks tight to me across the hips (misnomer – it’s where her hips would be if she had hips) and in the arms.

  • BazoDee

No complaints here -other than the increasingly hard to look at over botoxing. WERQ.

  • GenXcellent

    She does look good.

I do dread the new pointy shoe trend.  My toes have barely recovered from the last time.

    • lessax3

If it causes the five inch platform heels to go away I’ll wear pointy toes without complaint.

    • Corsetmaker

My poor squashed big toes are desperate for pointy shoes!

  • Kate4queen

    It’s a beautiful dress. :)

  • EEKstl

Gorge.  Sorta need that dress in my closet.

  • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Very chic. But I join the others in not feeling the hair. No one with her forehead needs more volume on top.

  • miagain

I gotta ask… what kind of shoes DO you like?

  • newleaf1

She is one who really can WERQ that baby poop color – it works on her.

  • Jessica Rowe

    LOVE it.

  • Diane_G

She better’ve paid for that dress outright, cause that is HERS to own.
I think the pointy toed shoes work here. They help make her look EVEN LONGER.

  • http://twitter.com/democracydiva Democracy Diva

TLo, don’t complain about pointy shoes yet. You know your power over celebrities – they’ll all revert back to those way more horrible, giant round-toed pumps if they fear your wrath! :)

Also, Kidman looks fantastic, and this dress is beautiful.

    • sherrietee

round toe pumps prevent hammer toe and bunions.  All hail the round toe pump!

  • CozyCat

Please don’t pronounce against pointy toed shoes, boys.  Those of us with, uh, thick ankles have discovered that they lengthen and slim the leg.  So if they are becoming trend worthy, it will increase our options.

(Ankle straps, on the other hand, are something we have to avoid at all costs.  So feel free to go after them…)

    • tinyredlocks

Here, here! Always loved pointy toed shoes. Always will.

  • http://twitter.com/delysia_lafosse Delysia LaFosse

Wow. Definitely the best I’ve seen her look in a while (and it’s not like she’s usually a trainwreck). Chic as hell.

  • lrhoff

    Gorgeous!

  • http://twitter.com/ShelfAfterlife Shelf Afterlife

If she fixed her hair she’d look better.  It looks like straw.

  • BayTampaBay

    She looks great!

It needs a belt!  Otherwise this is fabulous.

I think I finally get that WERQs are graded on a curve (right?!?!) but when I think of specific examples of previous honorees (think Tilda, Evan, Zoe at their best) and then I look at some WERQs that have been handed out lately… may I respectfully renew my call for an option between it and “Girl, That is NOT Your Dress?” on the scale?

Something like “THERE You Go, Girl!”  Or anything, really. I defer to the TLo genius on the name.  I just think the air around a WERQ bequest should be more rarefied, that’s all. :)

She does look great. But I wonder if she always needs this much ‘handling’ (literally – check the pictures) just to go to dinner.

    Fantastic. Love it.

    Fantastic. Love it.

  • deliadee

Dress shields needed.  And I wish she’d go back to the curly hair once in a while.  But a lovely dress, and she looks good in it.

Looove her.  She doesn’t always get it right, but this woman actually takes chances and when she gets it right she muh fuckin’ KILLS it.

  • marilyn

I just don’t like the dress, with a combination of the lace skirt and the solid embroiderd top.  It just looks too much like home sewing to me.  There is too much of a creative stretch from refined black lace with roses to ethnic embroidered roses for me.  She is a beautiful woman, it fits her well, and accentuates her great shape.  I think the shoes are great, because they don’t pull attention away from the dress, which is obviously intended to be the focal point.  But, the colors and the textures in the dress are just wrong.  Wow!!!  Isn’t anyone going to have a fit because she is wearing normal shoes?  Isn’t that usually grounds for a lot of snide comments?

  • NCDFan

Rules were made to be broken. She looks fabulous.

  • http://www.facebook.com/erin.kristoff Erin Kristoff

I don’t ever think I’ve seen her look so happy and alive. Bravo Miss Kidman!

  • Judih1

Looks great, best I have seen her in awhile But her bobble head and forehead as smooth as a flat screen TV kinda bother me.

    • Laylalola

Her head is wider than any part of her torso or hips.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=561903133 Sage Andersen

I love this dress, and like TLo, I am surpised that I do. But I must ask: what if she actually ate something one of these days?  The model looks curvier than her! Too bad, because it is a gorgeous dress.

  • http://twitter.com/stellaphone Stella Zawistowski

“Pre-tired” is officially my favorite neologism of 2012.

  • giiiirrrr

I had to keep looking at it to see if I liked it.  Still not sure.  The silhouette is divine, the top of the dress is gorgeous, and the bottom needed the texture to work, though I wish to God it was something that wasn’t lace.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_YMEB3XKJCE4WL62SKN473LWBXQ Frank

    omg she is so skinny…

    • bellafigura1

      yes, very very skinny.

  • http://twitter.com/chylde bellalozza

Hey, at least the shoes aren’t nude.

  • GorgeousThings

Attention Sarah Jessica Parker! Nicole here is going to give you a lesson on how to not look like 1, mutton dressed as lamb or B, desperate. Please study these pictures carefully. There will be a quiz at the end of the period.

  • Judy_J

Christina Hendricks would look great in this dress.

    • alyce1213

I can’t agree.  Christina Hendricks has such a completely different body type than Nicole Kidman.
This dress is for a tall, slender body. I think Christina, with her curves and enormous bosom, would look like a squat sausage in this dress.  It would make her frumpy.

  • http://twitter.com/GaraStJames Gara St. James

She looks too thin, but the dress is beautiful and she’s wearing it as casually as some of us wear jeans, meaning that for her, this is just another day in a great dress, facing the paparazzi.

  • alyce1213

Love everything from the neck down, including the shoes.  I’ll take them any day over hoof platforms or round toe pumps (which make me and most women look stumpy).
In most cases, when you wear good quality pointy shoes that fit, your toes will not be squooshed and your feet will be fine.  I’ve been wearing pointy shoes, NOT extreme points, since the late ’60s and my feet still look and feel fine.

  • bluefish

Cool dress — great colors and fit on her.  Look at those legs!

  • megohd

Thank GOD for pointy toed shoes. Those silly putty pumps that look like bricks are boring the shit out of me.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

What a lovely dress.  Hair and makeup are good.  But is that a stain on her left shoulder?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_K7SEDEVEYD5WGLTT5PGC6DURDQ B

It looks like one to me. Tsk.

  • bellafigura1

I can’t keep up.  Why do we hate her shoes?  Pointy bad?  I thought pointy good?!

  • Susan Crawford

Well, T and Lo, as you know, your bitter kittens and unborn fawns depend on you for guidance and insight during these perilous fashion times.
Through you, we have learned to eschew silly-putty shoes.
We deplore the use of heavy, smoky eyes AND a fire-engine red lip at the same time.
    We avoid bear-trap sandals.
We know that good posture and a hairbrush can count for a LOT in life.

So when you need to admit that you love a look that breaks some cardinal rules . . . boys, you’re entitled! Why? Because you have also taught your commentariat to value that special brand of TLo quirk that makes our day!

(Plus, Nicole looks absolutely AMAAAAZING in this Erdem design.)

  • http://twitter.com/jaythenerdkid Aaminah Khan

    That is definitely her dress.

  • cclaussen3

This was featured on other blogs who chose to feature her unfortunate perspiration stains (which in these pics appear to have dried). No worries , Nic, your statuesque beauty always prevails!

  • Louise Bryan

*sigh*  never in my wildest dreams…..  So altogether, so fabulous.

  • Allison Woods

Why is her head so big?

  • greyhoundgirl

Love–the colors all work on her beautifully.

  • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I love the pointy toed shoes.  I will love them forever.

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Her face is a little shiny, but other than that, she looks great.

  • http://profiles.google.com/phyllis.craine Phyllis Craine

What is the spooge on her shoulder? Oh ok I think it was raining…

  • NasserShaheen

I love brown but this isn’t working for me. Gold maybe rather than that odd poop shade would have worked better. Also, shoes. Witch like. Don’t wear them please ladies, they’re just ugly and harsh.

  • luluransom

That dress suits her perfectly. Best she’s looked in ages.

  • PeaceBang

Nic! You look so fantastic!! I love the outfit, love the earrings, and strangely, love the two-tone hair!

  • DebbieLovesShoes

    Love it.

  • kimberlini

She looks tinier than the model.  Glad I’m eating my dinner and not hers.

  • maggiemaybe

Those colors are amazing on her and that dress is heavenly. I’m a sucker for that embroidery stuff. Can anyone explain to me why designers have their models look like zombies/cadavers with the dead-looking complexions and the thrust-out-chin weirdness? I mean, some art director or photographer advised her to stand like that. Why? WHY!?

  • sid123

her head looks HUGE.  nice dress.

  • MissAnnieRN

I hate this dress.  TLo – we will have to agree to disagree here.

  • Beardslee

She looks great and she looks a lot more comfortable in her skin than when she was blonde and severe.

  • CatherineRhodes

LOVE that dress. I actually did a little gasp.

  • oohsparkley!

    You guys crack me up!

  • oohsparkley!

    You guys crack me up!

  • butter nut

i never would have picked this for her, but she looks great.

  • bitterk

    Not my favorite dress

  • OneTwoThreeFashion

    Awesome dress!

  • miatamam

Is it me or does that girl just look just plain happy?

  • mike__tv

Whatever happened to sexy Nicole? Ditch the straight hair. Eat a little more. Stop with the forehead and you’ll werq anything.  Stop with the forehead!!!

  • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

    That is completely her dress!
