WERQ: Dakota Fanning

Posted on March 09, 2012

Girl, you are just kicking the world’s ass, over and over again, in this outfit.

Louis Vuitton Sofia Coppola Bag

LOVE. IT. Love every little bit of it. You WERQ that ninja schoolgirl shit, girl!

This makes up for the “Little Red Riding Hood goes to a cocktail party” getup you wore the other day.

    J’ADORE.

Is it April 1st? Dakota looks busted, and that is a term I never thought I would use about her.

    • filmcricket

My thoughts exactly. The skirt’s too short, the blouse looks limp, the blazer doesn’t fit right, and ohmygodgirlgetyourhairoutofyourface. Dig the bag, but that’s about it.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2P2ANLRZ6YAVGONA36I2AQJYGI VicD

Looks like a sullen teen with a very nice bag.  That is so far from a WERQ – you must be ready for the weekend.

    • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Kinda looks like the walk of shame to me.  Love the bag and the jacket.

  • StillGary

Kinda Ralph Lauren — not in a bad way, tho. BTW, the jean jacket flasher is is leeeetle creepy, no?

    • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

LOL– love that “not in a bad way, tho.”

  • Allison Woods

I would love this much more if the skirt were just the tiniest bit longer. I think it is throwing the proportions off.

  • understateddiva

I’d like to walk in her shoes for a day.  No, literally – THOSE shoes.

  • tworabbitshow

I hope she doesn’t have to sit on anything cold.

  • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

This is pretty much what girls at my school looked like before netball. Only we had to have our hair tied back.

  • http://www.facebook.com/charlotte.horseman Charlotte Horseman

“Girl, you are just kicking the world’s ass, over and over again.” – something to strive for!!  Love it!!

  • Vaniljekjeks

    Oh, honey, YES!!!

  • fungstyle

i still want, nay NEED, her to work on the hair. come on, girl.

  • http://twitter.com/xsquared23 kerry dee

I’d love this a tad more if her blazer fit her shoulders a bit differently but otherwise, amazing.

  • JosephLamour

Damn girl. You should consider dressing this way all the time.

  • lilibetp

OMG!  She looks like a teenager!

    • NinaBoo

Exactly!  I love the skirt length. It’s not so short that the skirt comes with a hair net.  She’s 18 and now is the time to wear this kind of stuff.

      *Sighs wistfully*

  • lilibetp

OMG!  She looks like a teenager!

  • Pannyx

Has the blog been taken over by impersonators? This gets a WERQ? Seriously? The skirt is much too short. The jacket to large and bulky. And the blouse is boring and sloppy. The proportions look completely off and while I love the shoes they don’t really go with anything else. At best this looks to me like an IN/OUT post and at worst a This is Not Your… post. First Project Runway turns into a huge pile of crack, and now you guys are too? Please no.

    • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

I always got the impression that “WERQ”s were about applauding someone for doing something risky, or outside their wheelhouse, and as such, they aren’t going to be to everyone’s taste. This is not to your taste, fine, still kind of crappy to accuse TLo of being on crack for an opinion you do not share.

      • Pannyx

Why is it crappy? It is just another way to say, “Are you guys crazy?”

        • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

What’s not crappy about thinking someone’s crazy because they don’t agree with you? I admit, it all depends on tone, since I can call my brother “crazy” and he’ll know I don’t actually mean crazy crazy. Strangers on the internet, however…

          • Pannyx

I don’t really want to get into this much more, but T-Lo themselves on a number of occasions have alluded to the crack smoking of the judges on PR based on their crazy opinions, even times when I’ve agreed with the judges and not them.  This is just what I’ve done here. I think half the point of this blog is to point out all the times celebrities (or stylists or designers) are crazy because of the whacked-out fashion decisions they’ve made. It is called hyperbole and is often used by the fabulous and opinionated.

          • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

Oh, I meant that last comment as a deescalation, so no worries. Just voicing my opinion, as non-hyperbolic and non-fabulous as it may be.

          • Pannyx

I have to apologize. I think I’ve just been in a pissy mood all day because of the tragedy that Project Runway has become. I’m not even a fan of Kenley (not even slightly) but her auf’ing last night just rubbed me the wrong way. You’d think a TV show wouldn’t be able to get me so ruffled, but it is just sad to see the show in the state it has been in recently.

      • alyce1213

If T-Lo can dish out crackhead comments, they can take it too.

    • kentiesgirl

I too, am a little confused about this getting a WERQ, even though I like it. But I like it cause the knee high socks and pleated skirt were something I rocked in H.S., which makes it seem not so fashiony to me and the hair is, well, not i’m gonna get my pic taken hair. Personally I preferred argyle knee highs and paired with skin tight tops, not loose blah blouses, so probably woulda been an out from me. :)

  • http://twitter.com/hdl_b Heather Barkman

    LOVE the bag. *sigh* someday…

  • Terence Ng

Ugh, no. Girl, I like you, but this is like trying to do Buxom Japanese School Girl/Switchblade Rollin’ Catholic Sistahs and failing.

  • nannypoo

This has a sort of naughty schoolgirl vibe that I like a lot. Not a fan of those knee-highs though. How about tights?

    • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

      Very much early Britney Spears.

    • http://twitter.com/pointlesswords jaymeglynn

Knee-high socks and boots are huuuge right now though. Huge. And Dakota to me has always seemed a trend-follower, if not trend-setter. I think it works for her age and current trends.

  • Martha Deutsch

If this weren’t a WERQ she’d be getting an OUT from moi.

  • dress_up_doll

I think she looks cute and totally age appropriate. HOWEVER, the granny in me wants to yank that skirt down about an inch or two.

  • Joyce VG

    Ohhhhhh the bag!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I thought you meant WERQ of the street walking type.  A bit more length next time Dakota.

  • http://annequichante.wordpress.com/ Anne

    All she needs are nunchucks.

    • girliecue

      You Go(go), girl!

  • jw_ny

I’m pretty much in agreement with the love of this look on her…shoulders look a bit too big and broad to me though.

  • lrhoff

    Yuck.  Not a fan.

  • mjude

i wish i could but i know i can with the bag

  • schadenfreudelicious

i cant believe i am about to type this but i think the proportions would look better if she was wearing an over the knee height sock, maybe not so much a thigh high as that might move the look too far into naughty school girl territory……

    • Amanda Gibson

agreed. the knee high is breaking her up in a weird way.  I think even a knee high boot would be better because they stop just below the knee–the socks hit mid-knee, and I think it makes her leg look thick because of it

  • annieanne

Does she get ‘styled’ to wander around town dressed like that? Or is that her own closet and taste? Because if its the latter, the girl has some serious fashion chops and could be the next celebrity designer who can actually design.

  • IAmJ

For me, a WERQ it is not. I rarely disagree with you guys, but I think this is a terribly unflattering look on her.

  • guestela

    WANT the bag.

  • kolokOlchik

OMG, this is how pretty much all the girls in Japan were dressing last fall when I visited the country.  Perhaps, minus the platform boots.

  • http://eclectictsunami.blogspot.com/ Cassie

I LOVE this outfit, but I’m not entirely sure I love it on her. Something about the proportions, I think.

She’s killin’ it, though. Makes me think of Gogo from Kill Bill Vol. 1, which is never a bad thing in my book.

  • Kristy Glick
  • http://www.facebook.com/aboutelle Ashleigh Boutelle

    little bit Clueless “Cher”

    • girliecue

I LOVE Clueless “Cher”! Needless to say, I love Dakota’s look here. Love the imperfect schoolgirl vibe. I even love that she’s frowning a little, given that she’s always photographed so Stepford Child smiling and perfect.

  • http://twitter.com/marriedkuntz treat yo self

She looks too much like a football player for my taste. Covet her bag.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Bethany-Roullett/100000413803142 Bethany Roullett

Love it.  And this is the age to wear such a skirt.   It’s not the RC, it’s around town being photographed.  WERQ it, girl.

  • NICHOLAS PASQUALE

Blouse looks a little limp, but this is cute as fuck.

  • rainwood1

Dakota must go to the same hair stylist as the Olsen twins.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1253053236 Belle Burnett

My mother would say that she looks like a whore, with that tiny red skirt and high heeled boots.
and unfortunately, I am turning into my mother.

I do love the boots, though.

  • Victoria Sharoyan

     LOVE. head to toe LOVE.

  • altalinda

Pasty white thighs highlighted by too-short skirt?  Sorry, no.

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

The skirt is too short, but what I really hate is her hair.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3JSTXMWWVZN2QNP2UEKJMTWD7U Isabel

      Black roots showing too much

    • MilaXX

I’ve been over the hanging from the head hair for a while now, but I love this look.

  • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

Sorry, I really hate that jacket.

  • http://blue-again.myopenid.com/ blue

I don’t like it. The skirt and blouse are nice and light and flowy. They’d be cute with a pair of sandals not those heavy and dark boots and jacket.

  • bitterk

Not werqing for me at all.  She doesn’t have the legs for this look.

  • http://twitter.com/TigerLaverada TigerLaverada

I like the idea, but not the execution. The outfit makes her torso look incredibly long and her legs look very short, which is not a flattering set of proportions.

  • svtl

Love the bag – looks like an old Air Canada flight attendant’s bag!

  • Pennymac

I love this. Hope it wasn’t a windy day, tho, cause that skirt is SHORT.

  • alyce1213

Adorable.  Maybe an inch or two longer on the skirt, but it’s not a big deal.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1248212910 Jessie Melcher Brown

Did T & L really start drinking after reviewing project runway?  Because with those shoulders and the knee socks it looks like Lurch goes to parochial school.

  • MilaXX

That is a young, cute look. Werq gurl! ……and give me that bag!

  • miwome

I am limp with envy. Simply limp.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Damn, girl – you go and get it!

  • Pants_are_a_must

Not a WERQ, dear overlords. Not by far.

  • Gener1c

I loathe this.  In the thumbnail, I thought “Madonna’s ‘dental work’ truly has settled in!” and my husband thought this was Lindsay Lohan.  That’s a bad sign.

  • Vickiefantastico

I love you guys, but seriously? Is this WERQ worthy? It’s an OUT for me, based on those funky shoulders at the very least.

  • quiltrx

Enh.  Gogo from Kill Bill wants her outfit back.  But you can leave the bag for me.

  • NasserShaheen

I like the look but it ain’t her look. She’s playing dress up and the clothes are wearing her. Also, Sofia fucking Coppola got a bag named after her?

  • marilyn

I don’t get the concept of having a long handle on a purse and a short one.  I have owned purses with both options, and take off one or the other.  I am not in favor of the slutty cheerleader in worked over school uniform look she is doing here.  All she needs is a stripper pole.

  • TSkot

!?!?    She looks ridiculous!  Skirt way too short, jacket too big, and anyone over eight shouldn’t be seen in knee socks!

  • butterflysunita

I really like it, especially since it appears to be a random “girl on the street” and not a red carpet appearance.  Don’t think it’s a WERQ, though.

  • PeaceBang

Really? Because this reads to me like Bitsy got busted for pot at Choate and she’s walking to the car with her dad’s jacket flung over her shoulders. Mother’s going to be *furious.*

  • gubblebumm

my daughter would sooo wear this….wish i still could…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1325734955 Robin K. Osterberg

not in love… looks like a walk of shame get up to me… maybe last nights panties are in her purse….

  • ccm800

    AAAGreed, Correct.

  • Greg Yoder

She looks great.  Totally ready to kill Bill.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=506473106 Mori Clark

uhm, what? i can see what she’s going for in this outfit, but she’s a loooong way aways from it. jacket is huge on her and gives her massive shoulders, shirt looks limp, skirt looks sloppy. bag is okay but somber, hair looks like she needs to tie that up, and please, honey, smile. or at least don’t look so painfully somber.

    far from a WERQ, guys.

    • http://shootingshoes.wordpress.com Amanda Gun

Totally disagree with you on the smiling thing. It’s one thing if she’s working, like on the red carpet or during interviews or what have you; people who can’t be bothered to smile for the few minutes that takes probably need a reality check. But when she’s just walking down the street? What do you want her to do, plaster a joker-esque smile on her face at all times just in case somebody’s about to take her picture? It’s completely unreasonable to expect starlets to just retire their relaxed face forever.

  • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Love the shoes and *gasp* that purse, but not in love with the naughty schoolgirl thing.

  • BayTampaBay

It works for her and her only.  The skirt is too short.

  • turtleemily

    Is it Flag Day?

  • Thathoodwink

Better WERQ on those black roots…I thought she was naturally blonde….?

  • http://twitter.com/Glam_Dixie Audra R

If those knee highs went over the knee I would love this and she would also look like she walked off the set of Clueless. But still, it’s cute, IN.

  • Tamara Hogan

I think she looks like she doesn’t give a damn what anyone thinks about her clothes – which is fierce in its own way – but outfit-wise, thumbs up on the purse.

  • PhillipWilde

Why do the Fanning girls always have their hair in their faces?  Invest in a headband, please.

  • rose88

I’m going to ignore this WERQ and pretend that this is a Chloë Sevigny post.

Meet Nina, a dominatrix who caters to men who want to have pain inflicted on them by Catholic Schoolgirls and Maîtres’d.  This is her two-for-one special look. Her hobbies include water painting and interpretive dance. She’s saving her money so that one day she can open her own animal shelter.

    There!  That’s better (-:

  • MissAnnieRN

I can’t cosign the deployment of those knee socks with those shoes.  Just can’t.  A knee high boot and I’ve have been onboard.

  • http://twitter.com/anacedillo Ana Cedillo

werq indeed i love! copying this outfit for sure today! to the comment about the skirt being too short, not in the least, its just fine! she is young and petite she can wear it!

  • Call me Bee

Really cute and appropriate–though it makes me think of all those girl Ninjas in Kill Bill Vol I (or was it II…?)  Anyway–I like it.

  • pottymouth_princess

It’s a lovely bag if you’re in the mood to be rid of it via mugger. Home/workplace/event to car would be about the only way any woman can get away with carrying a bag (and as pursewhore, I love it) that screams TAKE ME, I’M YOURS!

  • http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=lf UltimaEsperenza

I love the outfit.  LOVE.  But she looks so tired!  And unhappy!  And I am not an advocate of people walking around with idiot glee pasted on their faces all the time, but she really looks miserable.

  • CatherineRhodes

    Ninja schoolgirl, well said, guys!

Love the way she looks here, but I loved the “Red Riding Hood cocktail party” look as well. She should do her fellow thespian Elizabeth Olsen a solid and send over her stylist.

  • nancymae

PRO: the boots and bag, the pop of color from the skirt, the general shape and color of the jacket
CON: those roots are bonkers (I blame you Rihanna!), the shirt and the jacket which on her makes her look like Lurch’s lost love child

  • GTrain

I love the look and think it’s age appropriate.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

With the exception of the shoes, it’s very ‘Clueless’.

  • mozzer0906

    fantabulous.  I covet that bag.

  • Cathy S

The only part of that I like is the bag. And I usually love blazers, but that one’s just wrong.

  • Sweetbetty

Catholic schoolgirl who rolled up her skirt and changed out the flats that are now in her bag for the shoes she has on now heading to her after-school hanging out with friends.

  • Isana Leshchinskaya

maybe it’s that she’s slouching, but her shoulders look HUGE with the pads in the jacket. so no. gross. straighten your back. i can scream that at so many female celebrities it’s terrifying.

  • Peeve

I’m not in love with the shoulders on the jacket, but, alas, they’re back in style. (Sigh…) I think she looks great, finally like an 18 year old girl, rather than a tiny adult in 30 year old clothes. If I were 18 and could wear this, you bet I would.
