Versace Fall 2012 Collection

Posted on March 01, 2012

This review’ll just work better if we do it stream of consciousness-style.

Goth chick meets sexy, armored Boudicea warrior meets Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, with bold graphic elements married to typically Versace elements of glitz, glitter, and religious symbols.

Hey, that wasn’t a half-bad description. We should do that more often.

Some of this could make really great stagewear, it puts me in mind of Florence + The Machine’s Ceremonials album. For some reason I am very drawn to the seventh-row, middle dress. Still can’t think of who could wear it. One of their more compelling collections.

    • Scarlet39

I’m admiring that dress, too.  I’m just hoping January Jones doesn’t wear it.

      • She’d look amazing in it though.

    • Comus

  • Christine Marie

I am going to have WEIRD dreams tonight.

    • Ceur

I’ll have a nightmare about the collarbone of the girl in the middle
in the second to last row where she tries to slice me open with her

  • I actually like this collection – normally I find Versace clothes tacky.

(Oh, FYI – Classicist here. Boadicea was a misspelling in the medieval age by a monk copying out Tacitus – it’s actually spelt Boudicca!)

  • FashionShowAtLunch

FLOVE those mesh (?) boot things.

    • dress_up_doll

Me, too. They’re actually one of the few things I really love about this collection. I also like them as hosiery/tights.

  • muzan-e

Eating. This. Up.  This is cosplay, for people who’d like to wear cosplay out to dinner but suspect the doorman might object. But enough about me. ….  🙂

Loving this.  It’s armour gone chic, it’s not too thoroughly Game of Thrones, and it sometimes even feels reminiscent of the Atelier line dresses from last year. I am right with them until we get to that crappy black top with the white gothic cross pasted onto it – which reads like something I’d buy at Hot Topic if I could stand the place.

    • PeggyOC

The Vampire LARPers WISH they could afford this (or could wear it).

  • michelle shields

I don’t use this word much but HATE!

    • IMNAngryLiberal

I agree — I was thinking that my stream of consciousness would have sounded more like “Ackkkk!”

  • afabulous50

Takes me back to Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” video…these looks would’ve come in handy.

  • alyce1213

Hate crucifix-wear. HATE.  Nothing else worth commenting on, except to say it’s been done and it’s ugly.

    • I don’t know if it’s the remnants of Catholicism that I will never, ever get rid of, or if I just think the Crucifix as fashion is too obvious and  reeks of trying too hard, but I don’t like it either. I’m not actually offended by it, but I’m sure it’s offensive to a lot of people. I can’t imagine myself donning a yarmulke because I think they’re cute, you know?

Plus, as you said, it’s been done. And it’s ridiculous.

      • Derek_anny

As a non-Christian religious person, I’m with you.  So I don’t think it’s just lingering Catholicism.

  • Clueless_Jock

Oddly depressing. I miss the colorful patterns.

  • jannanna

I keep flashing to Lucy Lawless to give it all some “oooooomph”

  • nannypoo

This might be the first collection I have ever seen where I hated absolutely every single component.

  • Depressing.  And a bit scary.

  • January Jones will be in at least half of those in 5…4…3…

  • I’m loving third row left. Gorgeous.

    • I do too… I think it’s the only thing here that I DO like.

  • Judy_J

Not my particular cup of tea, I’m afraid.

  • I’ll be the first to admit I’m not their audience, but crosses will never not look dated to me.

  • kimmeister

Some of these would go well with those weird face masks that showed up in some of the men’s collections.

  • might just be because the 3rd game was just announced, but the top rows wit hthe giant crosses just makes me think “THE TEMPLARS ARE TAKING OVER FASHION” ala assassin’s creed.

  • Love it.  There were times when I would have worn every single piece in this collection.

  • serenitynow02

Definitely looks like Rooney-wear. Never been a big fan of Versace and this collection isn’t doing anything to change that.

  • malvernite

the orange frock is nice. and the mesh boots.

    • Snailstsichr

That’s my favorite one, too. I didn’t like it as much in yellow in the next row.

The lack of eyebrows is a little creepy, though.

      • RedRaven617

So that is it! I couldn’t figure out why they looked creepy.

      • Heh.  I was thinking it was the eyes all made up to look like the undead are coming after you, but you’re right about the eyebrows as well.

  • spooki C

For a second I thought I was looking at old Lipservice clubwear. Nothing amazing, kinda bored by it because I’ve seen it all before at the goth clubs.

  • Those mesh “boots” are HI-larious!  Someone was definitely high when they came up with that idea.  Dumb!

  • MilaXX

ew, even for Versace standards this is ugly. Okay maybe the last row of gowns can work under the right circumstances.

  • mjude

    i really like this collection.

  • This is the second Versace collection that I’ve hated in the space of a year.

  • DesertDweller79

Big NO to the crucifixes.  And do people actually enjoy wearing clothing with the designers named splashed across it in huge letters?  Sorry, but I kind of hate everything.

    • muzan-e

My favourite pants have a large fabric logo stitched right into the butt.  It can’t be removed. I don’t know if it can be dyed. It’s not even made from the pant fabric. But I endure this because they’re the perfect brown, the waistline is ridiculously gorgeous, and unlike almost everything else I try, they seem to be specifically designed for tall, wide-hipped women with short, skinny legs.  They were also available for $25 instead of $175, presumably because they’ve got a large fabric logo stitched right into the butt.   *g*

I know that’s not exactly what you meant. I just have to let the angst out sometimes or else too much of it builds up inside me and eventually explodes, forcing me to do something godawful like – I dunno, buying that ridiculous dress with V R S C E A splattered all over it. I like to imagine that it’s marketed to the sort of people who’d buy black sweaters with giant white crosses pasted sloppily onto the front.

  • hughman

    “Resistance is futile, Patsy darling.”

“HAHA. Good one, Eddie. Too bad no one wants Donatella’s ass OR to assimilate it. No one wants to snort lines off chain mail, am I right? Let’s go outside for a smoke before their batteries die.”

  • minnye

The crosses, noooooooo.  Love the mesh boots though, and the orange keyhole dress.  It would be fun to see the first and third gowns in the last row on the RC, but I’m sure it would cause a lot of teeth to gnash.

  • Daenyx

Like the lines, textures, colors… hate, hate, HATE the crosses all over half of it.  Ew.

  • VicksieDo

Ah, a collection that two people can wear, Madonna and Rooney Mara.  Ok….. I do like those stupid boots though.

  • Oh my.

    I think I’m in love.

  • Great boots! You know who’d look fun in these? Jennifer Coolidge.

  • Qitkat

    Dragon meets Stepford.

  • LuLu Lemon is gonna sue….

  • Lauren Maier

Inner goth-girl loves the black stuff.  Inner-pagan hates the crosses.  Inner everything-else has a problem with the rest of the collection (except the orange and grey dress to the far left on the fifth row) because it kind of reads as “tasteful stripper-wear”.  :S

  • AthenaJ

I like this muuuuch better than the previous collection’s ‘seahorse circa Grandmom’s Boca Raton condo bathroom’ theme. A little too much use of the crucifix, but I’m guessing it’s an expression of the Italian Catholic culture and iconism (in a Madonna-esque sort of way), so I can deal. A few pieces go a little overboard into the goth and look too Hot Topic for my tastes, but overall it makes me think of the movie Underworld… I so would love to see Kate Beckinsale wearing quite a few of those pieces, all while kicking some Lycan ass and looking deadly fabulous.

  • For fans of the White Court and the Dresden Files… I think I’ll skip.

  • cleep1000

I’m sorry, but those mesh boots are hideous. They look like knee-hi pantyhose.

    • cleep1000

      The bangs are ridiculous, too.

  • Loving the little orange dress and the similar yellow one (without the giant Versace logo) and for some reason Christina Ricci popped in my head when I saw the last row left dress. She’s been doing very “I’m hot and my bod is rocking” stuff lately and I think it would suit her. HOWEVER. I know Madonna’s having kind of a “moment” because of the Super Bowl performance but please tell me the tacky crap covered in crucifixes is not going to last. A lot of this collection is very 80s, especially the big logos. Who is wearing that anymore?

  • Also just noticed that they all have Rooney bangs. Interesting.

  • giiiirrrr

Keep: the jackets, the grey dress third down on the right, the beige latticed-dress second from the bottom on the left.
    Lose: everything else.
    Fire: the stylist.

  • jilly_d

oh, the bangs.  Only The Roons can pull off those bangs.  These models look truly awful.

  • quiltrx

I’m surprised (from the description, before scrolling down) that I like this as much as I do.  The jackets are great, and the dresses have some interesting shapes.  I’m not wild about all the cross stuff…but I do REALLY like the latticework.

BTW, I feel a little squicky when I look at that boot picture.  It’s like her leg’s gone all wrong and the boot is causing it.

  • PastryGoddess

Which dress do you think January Jones will try to wear and fail to pull off?

    • annrr

#14 the white short one with the cut outs

  • Really love the dresses with scattered letters of Versace, and every middle look up to the 6th row. Digging that 1st row middle jacket and the chain mail jacket 4th row. I could see liking the crucifix dresses accessorized not so joan of arc-y, but I must say those scattered letter dresses, esp the yellow one, are just amazing.

  • gabbilevy

    This ain’t my collection.

  • I would never wear a cross normally but since my roller derby team is the Sisters of No Mercy (nuns with a nasty attitude) I want it all.  It would have the most bitchin boutfits and after party wear on the planet.

  • Bozhi

  • Sarah Thomas

Do not get and never have gotten the appeal of Versace. Everything they do looks tacky. It’s like someone decided Christian Audigier’s worst ideas would sell if they charged the price of a Fiat for them.

  • TobiannReinhard

Oh, if only I had the money (’cause I’m getting closer to having the body!)…

  • Kyle Crawford

hate is such a strong word……

  • annrr

The only think I like are the boots, those are awesome.

  • miwome

There are a lot of elements I don’t love, but the overall feel is awesome. I am obsessed with the orange dress and the similarly armor-y yellow one, and I would be delighted to see the last four gowns on the red carpet.

  • pippitypup

    Space Hookers from Mars!

  • There is something terrifically wrong with that leg in the 6th row of photos. What a weird angle? Is this the secret to modeling?

  • Not sure I like this collection, but it certain is interesting and well executed.  Although… I hesitate to use the word “executed” about a group in which the models look like futuristic gladiator assassins.

  • SpcilK

Repent! This line is a Holy mess.

  • No. I miss Gianni. Well, I have since he died. There are a few things in the past decade or so that I like, but as seemingly tacky and bawdy as Gianni could be, there was always something else going on. I so miss that.

  • ChelseaNH

I’m just amused by all the bangs…

    • sleah_in_norcal

it’s the girl with the dragon tattoo influence.

  • This is the tackiest shit I have seen in my life and if I could afford it I would buy every single piece.

  • Call me Bee

Oh dear.  I thought we were done with Goth.  Years ago.

  • bitterk

A nice reminder of why I dislike Versace

  • bitchfacela

    Some are really great pieces.

  • R. L.

    I love this collection.

  • I never expect to like Versace but there are several things here I like a lot!

how many damn collections are they releasing?
