“Smash” for ELLE

Posted on March 16, 2012

We love it when our little obsessions collide for us. Smash’s Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty get the Joe Zee treatment in the latest issue of ELLE magazine.

Christian Dior Spring 2012 Collection

And to no one’s surprise, the man does all right by them, dressing them both in ways that suit them best and also, somewhat ingeniously, that look like more stylish versions of their Smash characters’ wardrobes. In other words, it’s like Karen and Ivy got a spread in Elle. LOVE that Dior on Megan and the Jason Wu on Katherine.

More pics here, including Joe’s thoughts and a surprising story about his past.

I know none of you know me, but does anyone have any ideas as to why Katherine McPhee annoys the bejeezus out of me?  It’s unnatural how much I want to hiss and spit at her…poor girl’s never done a damn thing to me.

Aside from that, I love Megan Hilty in these pix and agree about the Dior.

      • NatalieD28

It’s funny – I could never stand her either. I have absolutely no reason to dislike her, I just do. Ugh!

      • Anathema_Device

What’s funny is that I really like her and I have no idea why. I remember her season on American Idol. She was just a year or two too late, as being the pretty girl with a big voice wasn’t enough anymore. I  mean she lost to Taylor Hicks!! Yikes. I think I have a stab of sympathy for her after that. (btw, that same season produced Daughtry and Pickler. One of those years where the “losers” did so much better than the winner.)

        • MissAnnieRN

          Completely agree, Device.

      • introspective

Im with you. Still on fast fwd thru all her solos and some of her speaking parts when shes not at the workshop during Smash eps. The doe eyed business rings so false. And the vamping (see above) seems like doe eyes is trying to sex it up. Double ring of falseness. In short she can sing but Im not convinced by her acting or her modeling.

I’m glad it’s not just me…  She just BUGS me!

      • Denny Li

These are my 2 issues w/ McPhee/Karen: (1) Talent is great and all, but without the discipline and hard work behind it, you’re just pulling a Lohan. The episode where she sang at a Bar Mitzvah epitomizes this. She did zero preparation, had no idea what she was doing. Spent the evening glued to her phone texts, and some famous producer wants to talk to her?? It’s just obnoxious, and (2) The so-called “talent” isn’t even there. Annoying as all get out when I can hear them auto-tuning the hell out of her singing. This is standard in pop, but for Broadway? The Smash producers/writers must think we’re idiots.

      • Vodeeodoe

I don’t like her for an extremely childish reason. She’s being favored over the curvy blonde. Yes she has a great radio singing voice, but she ain’t no Marilyn. She’s too skinny and she doesn’t look like her at all. She gets more fancy numbers on that show and even in the poster, her character is at the top of the pyramid. I have a tendency to favor the underdog, underdog being a figure of speech; in no way am I referring to  Meagan as a dog.

      Katharine McPhee is workin’ it.

IMO, that first dress is ugly from the front, the hem is hanging down on the side and the shoes are ridiculous. But she is beautiful.

    • Malice Grant

Megan always looks so much fresher when her hair is styled back and away from her face. Or maybe I just have an ear fetish…

    • beebee10

Love how these ladies work it in these pics. They look fantastic. Thank you Tlo and Mr Zee!

Hope SMASH continues to entertain. I’m liking it (even with a few little complaints)!

I love the clothing in these pics. Even though they are out of my price range, they are really wearable looks. Joe Zee did a great job of making McPhee and Hilty relate-able here.

    • hughman

While I know T-Lo have an adorable crush on Joe Zee (which I wholeheartedly endorse), I also feel like Zee kind of dumb downed the looks here which leaves me ambivalent. That Jason Wu went from being a rather sharp urban dress on the runway with its metallic buttoned up collar and concise belt to looking like something you’d buy at Banana Republic. Maybe this was the whole idea (didn’t go to the link) but it kind of killed my buzz. McPhee especially could use all the Glamazon skills they could muster and here she’s ready to go job hunting.

    • uprightcitizen

McPhee looks phenomenal in the Jason Wu. Maybe it’s because that looks like a dress a real person would wear, and she looks so girl next door. The Bottega Veneta she’s wearing is just a mess. Looks someone grabbed some scrap fabric off the floor of Pier 1 Imports and was told to make a dress in five minutes. The Dior on Hilty is pretty, but the combination of her pose (with the unattractive attention to her underarm) and the way that already thick bodice is folding up on her is giving her serious uni-boob. The Veneta on her is cool, but the skirt looks like it was designed to hold a lot of stuff … rolls of quarters, maybe?

But love them both. Katherine McPhee was almost too classy for Idol. Have seen Megan Hilty on stage twice in L.A., as Glinda in “Wicked” and as Dora Lee in “9 to 5″ and she knows how to steal a stage. Such an amazing talent. Happy that both ladies are getting this opportunity to shine.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

Katharine McPhee is a sexyface criminal and Megan Hilty looks cute as a button.

    • rkdgal

Am I the only one who thinks that McPhee could use a rosier-hued blush?  Her face — otherwise beautiful — always looks super monotone to me.  Those shoes in the first pic look fun to stand in, not so fun to try to move in…

      • emeazul

In the slideshow, they say the shoes are Tom Ford.

I bought a similar pair (off ebay, of course!) YSL by Tom Ford…and let me tell you, they are still in the box!!!
They are super sexy, but even standing is tough! Doesn’t help that I’m 5’10 and have a longer way down!
Someday…still am glad I bought them (make me smile!)!

        • Miss_Magpie

I have a pair of YSL by Tom Ford as well, and they are totally S&M (Stand and Model) shoes. I am 5′ 9, all leg, and they kill me! But oh-so-very-pretty!

      • MissAnnieRN

ugh, I cannot stand that heel design.  So. Fucking. Ugly.

    • Larkin21

“LOVE that Dior on Megan and the Jason Wu on Katherine.” My two favorites as well.

    • granddelusion

Those are some shoes on McPhee in the first pic. Wonder how it feels to walk in those.

      • introspective

Joanna coles was walking in a version of these death traps with a too tight dress in a wonderful shade of yellow at the hearst offices on the last PRAS ep. Ive never seen a more awkward walk trying to be marketed to me as a strut in all my life…

    • Rroxy

Funny, Megan Hilty gets on my last nerve on Smash with her toothy, insincere smile and fake Diva outbursts. And there she is again, flashing her 200 teeth on Elle. I like Katherine McPhee on Smash, she seems by far the most likely Marilyn. Hilty plays her way too slutty.

      • Fat_Lady

Do you know anything about Marilyn Monroe? Really?

    • http://www.facebook.com/samuel.j.donovan Samuel Joesph Donovan

I actually think the both of them look really dowdy.

    • TSkot

Katharine’s Bottega Vanetta looks like a bad Project Runway project.  FUGLY! (Think Austin’s flag dress)

    • NoNeinNyet

McPhee is doing that weird kind of smiling but not really a smile thing with her mouth in the Jason Wu picture. I hate when she does that thing. Makes her look ditzy.

    • http://blue-again.myopenid.com/ blue

The shoes in the first pic are disturbing! I love Katharine’s second outfit. I WANTS.

    • http://eclectictsunami.blogspot.com/ Cassie

I also thought the Jason Wu picture stood out – that is just absolutely perfect on Katharine.

    • butterflysunita

I love that Bottega Veneta jacket.  I clicked on this post just so I could get a better look at it.  Sigh.

      • Girl_With_a_Pearl

Kudos to the producers of Smash for casting Megan Hilty who I just noticed is not a stick insect, but has a more healthy figure.

    • MilaXX

Not crazy about Katherine’s first look, but I like the Jason Wu and I like both of Megan’s looks. I ‘m surprised that Bottega Venetta works  on her, because looking at the model I would have thought the elements on the skirt would have made her look hippy.

    • EEKstl

I am officially obsessed with the Bottega Veneta dress and jacket that Megan is wearing. Pretty much need that in my closet pronto.

    • m0r0

      Boring.

    • CQAussie

Is it me or does Megan Hilty look different in these photos, face wise?  Love the clothes, they all work for me.  But Katherine’s Face Giving is annoying me.  I don’t really know why though….

    • http://6things.blogspot.com par3182

Yet again – Ivy owns Karen.

    • malvernite

the selections for the red-haired girl are off. they come off a little tight.

    • Francisco Baxin

A really bad editorial.. looks like a bad catalogue for a cheap store or something.. makes the great pieces look like something cheap..

    • Mariah J

      Adorable! Love this!
