Sarah Hyland in What Goes Around Comes Around

Posted on March 16, 2012

How cute does Sarah look here?

Sarah Hyland attends The Paley Center for Media’s PaleyFest 2012 honoring “Modern Family” in a What Goes Around Comes Around dress.

We don’t know if it’s career strategy or just personal taste, but unlike almost every young actress who made the transition from teen to adulthood (because she’s 21, as shocking as that may seem), she’s not rushing straight to the super-sexy or grownup looks. If anything, this strikes us as a tiny bit young for her. It’s like she’s actively trying to dress like a teenager. Not that we’re suggesting that this is how the average teenager dresses; just that this would look perfectly at home on someone like Elle Fanning or Chloe Moretz. Still, she looks absolutely adorable here and if she wants to stretch out that time when she can still play teenagers, who are we to argue with that? She’s half our age and makes way more money than us so she must be doing something right.

And yes, the shoes were a good choice for this dress. Also the big hair, which is super-cute on her.

I have always lived by the credo that you can never have enough paisley in your life.  Love!

    • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

Yes! I love paisley, and I’ve loved it since I was about 12. It’s so much fun.

  • Jennifer Hofstetter

Doesn’t it make sense to try to dress young in a public forum specifically for your TV show if you’re trying to sell your young character on that TV show?

    • glennethph

I agree. The first thing that I thought of is that her character in Modern Family would probably wear something this fun and young.

    • hearkentoit

I don’t know, a lot of actors playing younger characters seem to take red carpet time as an opportunity to show that they’re adults. Like Lea Michele.

  • rivula

Hmm, I don’t know.  The outfit seems weirdly aging to me (hair+makeup+dress+shoes) but she still looks so young (like a teenager, as you said) that my first reaction was utter confusion about what age she’s trying to dress.  This doesn’t scream teenager to me at all (Dakota or Chloe or otherwise).

Right?! Her character on the show is 17 or 18? Not so far off from her actual age. She looks totes adorbs! But I hate those shoes. Just hate them. On anybody.

It’s the new backup dancer for the Sheepdogs!

  • http://twitter.com/marieldrucker Marie Drucker

I saw a bit of the Modern Family PaleyFest interview and all of the woman — Sarah and Ariel Winter included — wore really short dresses. I was worried for them when they sat down. Esp. Ariel.

  • DinaSews

    Love it.

  • http://twitter.com/riosramblings Michael Rios

This is my favorite outfit I’ve seen this week! You WERQ that va-va-voom hair/flower child dress/actually flattering nude pumps shit gurl!!

  • Sara__B

I’m always glad to see a female celebrities looking good at a photo op without over-exposing her body. That said, I’m pretty sure I had that dress in high school (circa 1968) but I wore it with much better-looking shoes.

    • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

I was Sarah’s age in 1965 when I wore the same dress in a different paisley pattern.
Zanes, a little shop in West Hollywood, made this dress to order in a wide variety of fabrics for about $20 and my closet was filled with them. So comfortable and versatile. An aptly named company – What Goes Around Comes Around for sure.

PS I think she missed an opportunity for a great pair of shoes. These are boring and add nothing to her outfit.

  • http://twitter.com/PlanetSandisan Sandisan

I am glad to find out she’s 21. Cuz DAMN.

  • BrooklynBomber

Very cute. Disagree about the shoes, though. I think sandals, flats, or boots would have worked much better.

    • Judih1

Me too! Boots would have balanced out her big hair. She looks top heavy to me

    • MissAnnieRN

ooh, boots!  I don’t think this looks too young for her at all.  If she threw on a pair of go-go boots, she could have stepped directly out of the mod late-60′s.  It’s a fashion period I happen to adore, and if only I could rock this look!  Sadly, I would need it to be 3″ longer and throw some opaque black leggings underneath it, because that would be a tunic on me, not a dress..

      • BrooklynBomber

See, now I was thinking knee high boots, more ’70s, but I’ll be happy with either!

    • tsid2012

You are so right!  boots would have been fantastic.  Maybe a little too literal retro but who cares/

  • jw_ny

oh idk…I think the dress is perfectly suited to a young lady in her 20s (she’s got the bod for it)…and as a tunic for a woman older.   Love the paisley pattern, color and style.   She looks very cute, however I really dislike the Snookie bump-it hair.   I’m not digging her shoe choice either.

  • Pants_are_a_must

She looks like a 70s Barbie doll.

  • serenitynow02

I love it and I don’t think it is at all too young. But may I add to the chorus and say how very much I HATE those stupid shoes. Thank you.

    • Adriana_Paula

I’m with you.  Los zapatos no son buenos.

      • NinaBoo

        ¡Los zapatos son tan feos!

  • http://twitter.com/catherineeileen Catherine H.

How are we the same age?! I suddenly feel very old.

  • JasmineAM

Good lord, I thought she was 14.

  • tallgirl1204

Modern Family is the only reliably entertaining show I watch these days…  Quick, funny, and often clever.  The characters, although drawn broadly for comic effect, behave consistently, and when they do step outside their normal behavior, the other characters notice and comment on it.  I save my web-watching of it for after I’ve been disappointed by PR or Glee.

  • merciblahblah

Mila Kunis, Jr. is freakin adorable. Love her.

  • BethR52

I had a dress very close to this sillouhette when I was 17.  Made it from a Simplicity pattern!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=27432316 Ally Monge

She looks great. Love that she is working that 60′s vibe, but in a young and different way. And I actually like her nude shoes (*gasps*), I think mostly because she is slightly tanner than they are.

    • http://beautyforrealgirls.blogspot.com/ accidental housewife

*gasp* indeed. I feel the same way about the shoes. I like them and am kind of shocked and horrified that I do. But they’re not that horrendous “government office filing cabinet” putty color, and they work well with the dress. Some cute sandals would have been great, but these are fine.

      She’s so adorable.

  • hughman

This is the best Mondo has looked all season.

  • SapphoPoet

    Very mod.

  • howdoilook

Wow. This is the first time I’ve loved the nude patents on someone. I think it’s the fact that the shoes don’t match her skintone, in addition to not detracting from the super-cool dress.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Her hair seriously looks *gorgeous*. She definitely looks great!

    • SouthernGirlRena

That’s what I thought.  When your hair is that healthy and shiny, it hardly matters what you do with it, but the style looks great on her too.

  • http://twitter.com/PhDKnitter marlie

Her hair seriously looks *gorgeous*. She definitely looks great!

  • girliecue

She’s adorable and knows how to make the most of her adorableness. LOVE her hair – it’s the hairstyle I wanted the most as a tiny tot whose hair had yet to grow! The shoes are a good choice, but the pair on the Saldana post earlier today would have been perfect. A bit puzzled why T Lo thinks she’s too old for this cute little dress. I think anyone mid-teens to mid-twenties could wear it. Anyone older or younger could also wear it, but only as a top.

  • maggiemaybe

I love a bit of paisley. Super cute.

  • granddelusion

I had a dress just like that in eighth grade. During the Nehru trend.

  • Cathy S

I’m not a fan of paisley, but I love this. She looks adorable.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=733516833 Toby Wollin

OK, I’m going to go way out on a limb here and admit that I wore a dress exactly like that in 1968.

  • finnishmaria

The outfit is super-cute, love it. I know you two try to stay away from discussing physical attributes outside of clothes + makeup + accessories (which I admire) but I feel like her face looks different than in Modern Family. Looking sideways – I thought that maybe her cheeks look puffier. Anyone else see that? Do you think it’s the makeup and hair doing that — or perhaps she just has a slightly swollen face for some reason? (Or perhaps gained a pound or two, which would be of course fine.)

  • Nariya

Meh, it looks like a shirt to me. Not that it’s short (although I don’t envy her trying to get out of a car in it); it needs a leeeetle more taking in at the waist. Not much. Just a little.

  • piecesofconfetti

    Cute!

  • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

That is one girl who likes to smile. The Mara girls have nothing to worry about.

  • http://promiscuouslola.blogspot.com/ Cate

I had NO idea she was already 21. WOW.

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I owned that dress in a slightly different paisley in the 70′s.  I don’t really like the colors on her–they look a little old–but the shape is really cute.

  • http://twitter.com/TigerLaverada TigerLaverada

I had that dress in high school, or one just like it. I looked great in it, too. :-)

  • MilaXX

She looks super cute here and while I agree Chloe or Elle could wear this, I don’t think it’s necessarily a young dress. It has a sort of mod/retro feel about it that’s perfectly suited for someone in their early 20′s. More importantly it’s appropriate for the event.

  • Spicytomato1

She gets it right pretty much every time, kudos to her stylist or mom or whoever is helping her. Also, to all those folks who are saying that Jennifer Lawrence just needs time to evolve fashionably because she’s young…I present you Exhibit A, Sarah Hyland, who is (I think) the same age yet whose sense of style miles years ahead. (And I’m not trying to be unkind to J Law. I think this shows that some people have a more innate fashion sense than others regardless of their age.)

  • lalagigi

She looks absolutely fabulous. I can find nothing to snark about…not even the putty shoes.

  • EEKstl

    Super cute.  Love the hair.

  • http://twitter.com/jaythenerdkid Aaminah Khan

That print is making my eyes bleed. The rest is great, though.

  • snarkykitten

it looks like some old lady’s curtains used as a gyno gown. NO.

  • TieDye64

Looking so very cute! I do think strappy sandals would’ve been a much better choice, though.

  • ccm800

I disagree with the shoes for sure -  but the rest is pretty sweet

  • http://twitter.com/asciident Melissa Brogan

I’d like it a touch more if the silhouette came in just a little more at her waist, but it is a super cute dress and I’m glad she’s sticking to one or the other (legs or boobs).

  • NurseEllen

Hey, she’s at the Paley in paisley!

Seriously: looking very cute.  Love the “bump it” hair!

  • DCSheehan

Gorge although a little too short for my liking. Not sold on the hair either but it kinda works. Some rings Wouldn’t have hurt either.

  • Sophie Collier

The dress is super cute and her hair looks great, but together it looks a wee bit costumy, like those celebs who wear the flapper style dresses and then finger-wave their hair.  But still, this chick is stylin!

  • lifetime_student

Love the dress and hair, not so much the shoes. Actually, this dress is almost identical in shape to one I made in 8th grade Home Ec in 1969. If I had saved my high school wardrobe my daughters could save a lot of money on clothes.

  • SewingSiren

    Very cute.

  • Lisa

It’s a very 60s look, both the dress and the hair, and she looks very cute.  She’s 21, I don’t think it looks too young for her.  Nice and very put together!

  • PrunellaV

Adorable. But while they don’t look bad here, I don’t think there’s ever been a look that just cried out for putty pumps.

  • xmixiex

love it.  she’s SUCH a beautiful girl.  almost the way lindsay was, before she lost the plot.

  • Bozhi

The sleeves are not right for this short and style dress, they should have been longer with more volume at the wrist.

She is not too young for this look. She looks great.

  • tsid2012

Super cute!  She is such a pretty, pretty girl.

  • adnama79

That length is pretty daring and sexy – but you’re right about it not being icky trying-too-hard sexy like some young stars do.  Sleeves balance it.

  • http://angryfemur.tumblr.com Andrea Lane

…she kind of looks like an extra from That 70′s Show…

  • YAELS

I think she looks great except for the makeup. I would have toned that down about 3 notches. Otherwise – Brava, Sarah!

  • http://www.facebook.com/dancinfool Ditty Nicolaides

I wore that dress in 1969. Black and white rather than the muddy colors here.

  • kimberlini

Does every female in Hollywood own a pair of those shoes?  I guess so….

  • frankystein123

A bit too hippy like for me, and what’s up with her face, it looks like a pear here.
