Royal Watch: Cathy Cambridge in M Missoni

Posted on March 02, 2012

She really is the Duchess of Coats, isn’t she?

Catherine, Duchess Of Cambridge at the Fortnum and Mason Store for a ceremony to unveil a plaque to commemorate the restoration of Piccadilly in London in an M Missoni coat paired with Rupert Sanderson shoes.

That thing is GORGEOUS. One of the most fashion-y things we’ve seen her wear in ages. Paired with the suede grey pumps, she makes a perfect backdrop for the daffodils she’s sporting for St. David’s Day. Well done, Cathy.

Camilla, bless her, just can’t keep up.

I love her but I didn’t like the coat at ALL.

    • P M

I like the colour; I’m not crazy about the trim

      • NC_Meg

The color is great, I don’t like the trim or the raw edges. I also don’t like the shape, or lack thereof.

        • classmate’s step-mother brought in $17882 lasṫ weēk. she works on the laptop and got a $322300 condo. All she did was gēt blēssēd and put into work the tips uncovered on this

        • @sljd

    • kim i

omg, really?  i ADORE it.  i think it’s dropdead gorgeous.

  • It’s a great look — formal enough to remind you she’s the Duchess of Coats, but informal enough to make her seem human.

And yet: still no baby bump.

    • GorgeousThings

I dunno – she looks really tired in these photos – kind of like the way I remember looking before I started to show.

      • I’d imagine being in the royal family and having obligations like this is also tiring.

    • EiEiOh

Didn’t she and William make a point of saying they weren’t going to try to have a baby until after the Olympics and the Queen’s whatever number anniversary it is this year?

      • NC_Meg

Yea, I think it recently came out that they decided to wait until 2013. The Olympics and the Diamnd Jubilee (60 years) are both this summer plus they have their Asia tour as part of the Jubilee celebrations.

        • Can you be suggesting that they use contraceptives?  I’m shocked!

          • fiestyfashionfem

God – don’t tell Rush Limbaugh.  He’ll call her a slut and a prostitute and demand to see her in porn. He is such an asshat!

I love that coat – and those shoes.

          • kentiesgirl

I have no love for the coat or shoes but anytime someone calls Rush Limbaugh an asshat deserves a major thumbs up 🙂

          • I’d so love to meet Rush right now, with the whole contraception thing.  I can guarantee I’ve slept with less people than he has, just by his number of wives, and I’ve been on virtually every form of birth control known to man since I was 15.  (I had a medical issue that required it)  And I have the crazy pregnancy hormones that I would LOVE to have someone to take them out on.

          • Well, since they’d been together for 9 years before getting married and we’ve seen no signs of 8 babies hiding around them, I think we can be relatively sure of that:)

    • MK03

Aah, who cares if she’s not pregnant yet? It’s ridiculous that there’s still so much pressure on the royals to spit out an heir as soon as rings are exchanged. And can you imagine the histrionics that would ensue if they *gasp!* didn’t want kids?? Quelle horreur!

      • Spicytomato1

As for not wanting kids, I don’t think William has any choice in the matter. Isn’t it his duty to provide an heir and, ideally, a spare?

        • Well, he does have a choice — he doesn’t have to tell anyone that they’ve PREVENTED children or that they are consciously choosing not to have them.  They can just have mysterious conception problems forever…

      • “Not wanting kids” is decidedly not an option for them, given that their number one job duty is “procreate.”

    • Tom Shea

Many thoughtful gossip bloggers (yes, there are some) posited the opinion that she won’t try to have a baby until after the Olympics. That’s one of theonly positive things that couldsteal the thunderfrom the Games,so if they’re going to try,I’m of the opinion it will be after the Summer Olympics.
Coat? Loverly. “Duchess of Coats” made me think of Pete Campbell talking about “the Republic of Dresses” at Bonwit Teller.

  • shirab

Love it! The shoes, the coat, the calf muscles. She looks great, and effortless but still like she’s putting in the effort, if you know what I mean. Just all so appropriate and well-planned.

  • Sara LaBatt

She’s the dutchess of adorable dimple and awesome calves too.  Of course the coat is beautiful.

  • I love how the little girl in purple is readying herself for a curtsey.

    • Michi Gee

I didn’t notice her until you pointed this out.  I am not particularly gooey about children, but my goodness that’s a beautiful collection of them, isn’t it?

    • Michi Gee

I didn’t notice her until you pointed this out.  I am not particularly gooey about children, but my goodness that’s a beautiful collection of them, isn’t it?

  • Jennifer Hejtmánková

The outfit looks like something her mother-in-law would wear.  It’s perfectly serviceable, but not very interesting.

    • Farthingale

I think the style is purposely an homage to get on Betty’s good side. Also, her dressing in this kind of “uniform” keeps the hysterical speculation about WHO she will be WEARING at a minimum (which was NOT the case when Diana and Fergie (oh, dear!) were bestowed on us.)

I think the royal handlers of an increasingly useless monarchy have learned their lessons and want to keep the focus on the causes not the clothes.

HOWEVER, when a girl has unlimited resources, it’s only a matter of time. Just you wait…

      • poggi

I agree.  She also appears to approach the princess part of her life and the public aspect of her marriage very professionally and as a job, as opposed to seeing it as a fairytale so she seems less swept away by the “princessness” of it all and the change in lifestyle.  Her approach to fashion seems very consistent with her approach to her official capacity (look nice AND appropriate and communicate the right message rather than wear fabulous things–not that she doesn’t wear fabulous things but they always fit her mission, her position, the people she is with and around…).

    • kim i

wow.  i think that coat is so chic it hurts.  lol.  different strokes, hey?

  • Spicytomato1

Love the coat, love the daffodils. Both complement her ring nicely. But I’m starting to think her eyeliner is tattooed on because her eye makeup always looks exactly the same.

    • Farthingale

Diana was know for her eye liner addiction as well.

  • it really is a beautiful coat! I wish I could afford that many great coats.
I am surprised you guys didnt address the whole confusion with wether its Missoni or not? I dont quiet understand what that’s about

  • serenitynow02

Major case of coat envy. And shoe envy.

    • homespunner

Coat envy. Shoe envy. Leg envy. A trifecta of envy.

      • TheOriginalLulu

        HAIR ENVY! *seethes*

  • CPK1

I love this. And she apparently got it a the outlets at Bicester Village nr Oxford. It’s very fab outlet shopping but still!

  • Clueless_Jock

Nice to see her wear a non-British designer.

  • TieDye64

She looks fantastic and that is one gorgeous coat. Camilla does her best. Bless.

    • Farthingale

Right. Poor Cammy. She wasn’t thrust into the royal sites until late in life. A little late to develop your fabulousness (when you’ve been in jodhpers and riding boots for the last 40 years.)

      • TheOriginalLulu

True, Cam has never been the glamorous fashionista. The woman is probably more comfortable in more casual clothes, not that there’s anything wrong with it.

      • BerlinerNYC

I’m actually surprised by how well put-together Camilla generally looks in her public appearances. It didn’t help that she first became famous as Diana’s rival, which was an impossible competition in the first place, but they always showed her in that riding getup. Starting with her dress for the wedding to Charles and continuing since then, she’s not nearly the frumpy mess that she got burned into our consciousness as.

        • kentiesgirl

I’m with you, I think she found her niche and I personally like it. She owns her style, that’s the best way I can think to put it. I’m apparently the only person who thinks this, but I like her coat/coat dresses more than Kate’s a fair amount of the time, because Camilla seems comfortable and happy and confident and that, to me, is pretty fabulous.

HA! Shoulda read the next few replies, I guess I’m not the *only* person who thinks so.

    • AudreysMom

Is it just me or is Cammy finally looking happy these days?

      • TieDye64

Noticed that myself. Good for her!

    • I read somewhere that Charles has final say on her clothes and loves the way she looks.  Which might explain a lot about his lack of chemistry with Diana!

      • I think it has more to do with the fact he loves HER, so loves the way she looks.  My husband will tell you I’m stunning while pregnant and sick — and believe me, it’s either total insanity or a great deal of love, because I am decidely unfabulous at that point.

    • I actually rather like Camilla’s coat (?), but then I’m a sucker for navy and white stripes.

      • TieDye64

I think she looks pretty good as well, but I can’t imagine standing next to Cathy who’ll steal the show.

    • Can I just say how much I love the commenters here and their ability to NOT slam Camilla and compare her to Di every time she’s seen or mentioned?

And I don’t think she looks bad.  I think she looks like a post-menopausal woman who is not the slightest bit interested in wardrobe and wants to be comfortable.

      • alyce1213

Being a fashionable woman who happens to be post-menopausal, I don’t think that’s a good thing. Nor is just looking comfortable commendable to me. I wouldn’t expect Camilla or any woman of any age to be UNcomfortable in their clothing choices, but Camilla has never, ever dressed well. She looked matronly and dowdy thirty years ago. With the resources she has, she could do a lot better than comfortably post-menopausal. No excuses, simply bad taste.

  • sarahofalessergod

Fab.  And I never noticed her dimples before!

    • Farthingale

    •  That was my first thought as well. What a darling dimple. And great calves–I’d kill for them over my linebacker calves and shoulders.

  • That shade of blue is such a good color for her, too.

  • Well done indeed! And while yes, she seems to be the Duchess of Coats, let’s all take a moment to appreciate how seasonally appropriate she dresses. It is winter, y’all. In England. Coats are appropriate.

  • I want her legs.  Damn her!

  • tinyredlocks

Love both the shoes and the coat. But what I love even more is the little girl in the middle with blue(purple?) dress, white socks, Mary Janes and apple cheeks. How cute is she?!?

  • Love the Duchess of Cambridge’s coat and the daffodil corsage, it’s lovely.  The oversized collar on Camilla’s coat is hiddy, and the multistrand pearl necklace with the honking great stone at the center is also focus-pulling, both of which focus attention on her neck, probably not what she wants to do.

  • Farthingale

The Duchess of Coats shrewdly takes a page from Betty’s look-book who has been working the coat/dress combo for, oh, fifty or sixty years (

I like that she’s chosen a “work uniform” for her appearances. I think Caths is just pacing herself and we’ll be seeing her preference for designer duds emerge slowly but steadily. Also, I’d wager she’s been “advised” to not lose her “common touch” TOO quickly.

  • Jecca2244

not only does that coat look great on her, it is actually a piece of Missoni I’d wear off the beach. Gorgeous.

  • EiEiOh

I just love the way the kids are looking at her (not so much noticeable in these pictures but in others I have seen from the event).  They are such smitten kittens.  It must be so exciting to meet a real life princess and such a lovely one.

  • She looks fantastic! And simple enough to not upstage the Queen.

    • Farthingale

Right? Diana was not as shrewd. Drove the Queen nuts.

  • Hmm… gorgeous coat and she looks out-of-this-world beautiful, but it does hang a little bit on her frame, no? Shoulder/bust/upper sleeve area could’ve been taken in a skosh.

P.S. Who would’ve thought Camilla to be a trendsetter – keep an eye out for rugby formals next season!

  • The coat is ok, but those calves are killer!

  • Sara__B

She looks beautiful, fashionable, elegant, classy, approachable, and, my favorite part, happy. Thanks for the photos. The young duchess is always worth seeing.

    • TheOriginalLulu

Yes, I have always enjoyed watching these silly royals; so glad TLo has a regular post for them.

  • Judy_J

Love that coat, and I also love that she appears to be wearing nude hose.  Well done!

  • Does the UK have a collection of well behaved adorable little children ready to be toted out for photoshoots?

    • Stubenville

You can order them from Central Casting.  =)

  • I love the girl in #3 who is not impressed at all…

  • TheOriginalLulu

Wow, really a gorgeous coat. The color is fantastic on her and yellow flowers pinned to it are a nice touch. Not loving the shoes, though.
Camilla. Poor thing is just about as dowdy as you can get, but it must be said that she does have a great head of hair, even if the style is matronly.

  • Lizzyisi

Oh, I think Camilla looks lovely for a woman of 65! I guess she could use a new hairstyle and I don’t much care for the collar with that necklace, but the general shape is flattering for a coat (especially if you’re older and getting thick around the middle) and navy is safe for her complexion. As for the 30 year old standing next to her, youth and a slim figure have a way of making almost everything look elegant on a pretty girl. Although I agree with you, that M Missoni is a beautiful coat and it’s lovely to see Middleton wearing colors.

    • formerlyAnon

I would add: a woman of 65 who’s spent much of her life outdoors, by choice, and who’s never been willing to sacrifice for glamour – or even shown any interest in it.

  • That is the best Camilla has looked in a while- which is not saying much.

  • P M

    WELL DONE, Cathy Coats.

  • Kate looks great, but I wish you guys had posted a better picture of Grandma Betty. She is totally rocking that hat. How many suit and hat combinations do you suppose she has?

    • Sara__B  Try this site for a picture of the Queen at this event, and many many more. (I’m surprised Camilla and Cathy aren’t wearing hats, too.)

      • SapphoPoet

There’s a picture on that site of Camilla holding a lit candle where she looks really beautiful. Worth a look.

  • mjude

Kate looks just great.  then TLO says “Camilla, bless her, just can’t keep up” LMFAO

  • Tall and Salty

You GUYS.  I love you dearly but I have to object to calling this coat “fashion-y.”  It’s cute and lovely on her, but it looks like something any old gal could find on the Talbots clearance rack after Easter Sunday.

  • SapphoPoet

She looks like spring: bright and fresh. Gorgeous.

What’s she going to do in summer when she can’t wear coats?

  • newtonGOTbeaned

Eh. The coat is fine, but I like her McQueen coats a lot more.

    • Vava Shagwell

Absolutely agree with you on that.  This blue coat looks MATRONLY.  Like someone said, Talbots!  ICK

  • MoHub

Love that she’s not wearing platform soles; that alone is worth bonus points.

Also, I think Camilla looks pretty good and very happy.

  • Lilak

V v pretty coat  (the seam treatment in the back made it just right).
Choice of shoe perfect (the color, of course, and just that leetle bit of texture).

The Queen (not counting the bagginess of her suit) actually looks the freshest of all three women!
(Poor ol’ Camilla — last place again, outshone even by her no-spring-chick mother-in-law.)

  • Lilak

(Ref. my original comment:  Photos of Queen, etc. seen on another site.  Whoops.)

  • 3boysful

Camilla’s ensemble would’ve looked a bit fresher sans the navy pantyhose.  And the big honkin’ jewels.   That’s why I rarely wear mine-ha!

All told, tho, Camilla doesn’t look too bad for her.  Cathy is, as usual, adorable.

  • Cathy S

She wears the greatest coats. And I love her shoes–check out those calf muscles!

  • holdmewhileimnaked

that kid in the pink is gonna have her own–television program, internet program, major blog, whatever works–one of these days.
sooner rather than later, give her ten or fifteen years.

    • BigWhiteGrannyPanties

I was scanning the comments to make sure I didn’t say this after someone else did.  I’m with you.  I’d put money on that little pink one that she’s going to go far.  She’s NOT star struck at all, she dresses well, and she knows where the cameras are.

  • Carla_Charlton

No one can beat her for having clothes that fit impeccably.

  • Pants_are_a_must

I’m not sure I love the color of the shoes with that coat, but she looks gorgeous nonetheless.

  • Chic on a stick. I love, love, love that coat. Stunning color.

  • She looks gorgeous, of course. Love the coat.

And with the daffodils Cathy is multi-tasking: They are also the symbol of the Marie Curie Cancer Care charity, whose supporters wear them. And children often give the Queen daffodils when she goes on walkabouts because they are her favorite flower.

  • I’m constantly jealous of people who live where they can wear fabulous coats.

    • pokokpuding

Joining you in the jealousy corner.

  • Kayceed

Love love love the coat. Am currently obsessed with longish spring coats that are not raincoats and not trench coats. Did I mention I love it?

  • Beth G

It’s March in London.  It’ can’t be all that warm, plus it’s not like she’s got much on her to keep her warm!  I think she looks adorable and proper for the occasion.

  • I love that she’s found a look that works so well for her and just trots out different (gorgeous) variations on that look. Also, I love those shoes.

  • janetjb

I love her coat it makes me think she could wear some of Victoria Beckham’s line

  • Fer cryin’ out loud!  Camilla isn’t supposed to keep up with Cathy C.!  I think she looks pretty good here-nice hair & makeup plus an attractive coat/dress to boot.  Since when is she possible going to compete w/ someone a third of her age.  I think she’s ahead of the curve for the older Royals (in spite of the matchy shoes) in this outfit.  Give the ol’ gal a break, T-Lo!

  • JaneDC

Ahem. Camilla is 2x plus Katherine’s age. She’s not Helen Mirren for sure, but she does OK by general British upper class late middle age standards. I’ve appreciated her ever since she wore that Fuck You All circle of feathers when she married Charles.

    • And they both looked so happy when they got married.

  • amywinns

    Cute, serviceable look for Catherine.
And personally I’m imagining Camilla saying “yeah, my collar is wide, but are you getting a load of these PEARLS, bitches??”

  • rainwood1

The Duchess of Cambridge looks fabulous.  And one of the things I love about the Duchess of Cornwall (they’re both D’s of C’s!) is that she’s not trying to keep up with someone half her age or upstage anyone.  There are a lot of Hollywood folks who could take some lessons from her.

    • AuntieAnonny

      That’s not what I read..

      • rainwood1

I’m reacting to the photos of what they’re wearing and what she often wears, and not to what someone might have read.

    • Lisa

That’s what I was thinking too.  I doubt very much that Camilla was fancying herself as a fashion plate to begin with, but she doesn’t look like she’s trying to compete.  I mean, she can’t, but she doesn’t look like it even bothers her.

      • Gail Kwak

Very true.  It took her a life time, but Camilla ultimately got what she wanted.  She has nothing to prove to anyone, and for that I love her. Besides, I think she looks great here.

  • Love.

  • I had pair of grey suede pumps years ago, I have to say they are the perfect spring shoe, they work with EVERYTHING

    •  Heh – knew you’d be here, Phyllis — I’m sure you noticed the sleeve heads on the coat that the Dutchess of Cambridge is wearing. Just a little detail there that lifts the whole look, I think.

  • NurseEllen

Of course that darling Mrs. Cambridge looks wonderful, she always does.  The little boy in the receiving line, with his eyes closed, looks like he’s about to experience the rapture.  Just adorable!

  • littlemac8

Gorgeous.  Love the color and the seaming that give the coat an edge and a shape.

  • BazoDee

I like it -but really you have to be built like her to pull this off – she looks lovely -but no one else could wear this. I do fantasize that she wore yellow shoes though.

  • Love Her.  I’m sure you’ll see CC in many coats until it warms up, it’s chilly in England. I wonder what the blue dress looked like underneath?

  • sleah_in_norcal

camilla:  a little advice.  i wouldn’t be standing next to the duchess too often with those legs.  the sheer navy stockings were a good idea, though.

  • She never wears tights or pants, I imagine she’s cold. I’d like to see her in more dresses now. Her coats are beautiful and even I have been inspired to pick a few nicer coats this year. It has been only coats for months now and I’m ready for a change.

  • Miss_Led

The Daily Mail is clutching pearls and screaming “Frayed Coat!”

  • luluransom

That girl can do coats like nobody’s business.

  • Lisa

She looks fabulous!  That coat is seriously gorgeous!

  • quiltrx

I like the shape, but not the edge treatment.

I actually like Cammie’s coat, if the bottom weren’t so full.

  • In that last picture, the ring on her wedding finger is one I used to DREAM of wearing. Lucky, lucky lady!

  • calimon

Yes, I approve, your Majesty (if you can refer to a princess as that)!

  • formerlyAnon

DAMN this girl does her job well!  How she manages to look so consistently good without every being remotely daring is beyond me. Love coat.

And Camilla is looking damn good for her. I kind of love her shoes, they’re almost not frumpy. (I also stick to the low heeled options, and yes, they aren’t as good.)

  • Lilithcat

I never realized her legs were so lumpy.

  • PeaceBang

Another coat win for Cathy! And Camilla’s hair looks really beautiful. She doesn’t need to keep up with that spring chicken. I like Camilla. She has a natural elegance and self-possession, and any woman who can endure what she has in the public eye and make it out the other side has my admiration.

  • Susan Crawford

Great color, superb fit, and just perfectly royal but youthful for our Cathy.

Whoever talked Camilla into those horizontal stripes on her coat should be banished. That design was NOT her friend, was it?

  • I wish her clothes could be my spirit animal. I know it doesn’t make sense, but between her and hamptons batman i think i would have the best closet in the world.

  • MilaXX

Camilla couldn’t keep up back when there was no one to keep up with.  Fashion is simply not her string suit. Cathy on the other hand seems to love fashion and does a terrific job of being fashionable and royal at the same time. It also looks like she’s pulled back a bit on the eyeliner. She looks terrific.

  • kentiesgirl

Even though Europe’s going ,or was, thru that crazy cold snap (feel for ya, get that every year here, we’re just prepared for it cause we’re so darn used to it), it’b be great to see what’s under the coat once in a while. I caught a flash, and it seems like it’s an exact match. Shocker.

Sorry, but I think it’s Camilla ftw here. It may not be my cup of tea, but at least it’s not monochrome. Again.

But points for the shoes not exactly matching the coat. Baby steps!

  • BuffaloBarbara

Coat’s meh, and Kate still needs to get a sandwich somewhere.  Has she still not found the kitchen at the palace?

  • bellafigura1

The little girl in the purple frock is just. so. princess-stricken.  This might be the exact moment she’s deciding what she wants to be when she grows up!  Adorable.

  • voter1

Camilla should be called “the Duchess of Frump!”

  • Miss_Magpie

Well, our girl is rockin’ her uniform once again, and she looks great, was appropriately deferential, no complaints here. It is interesting to see her warming up to brooches via flowers, well played. (She didn’t look comfortable wearing the Maple Leaf, in my opinion. Long hair gets caught in and covers them, something she will have to figure out eventually…)

What I DO have issue with, and it is painful to say, is that I am kinda horrified when I hear sound bites. And I Adore her. Bless.

  • maggiemaybe

    Those shoes are totally yummy.

  • sashaychante

    Catherine always looks so lovely.

  • bluefish

Love the coat and the shoes.  She looks great.  Wish she would get a more modern haircut but, given her job and general vibe, I can see why she keeps it as is.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

Well, Camilla has NEVER kept up, but she HAS been kept.  😛

Anyhoo, love the coat but I covet those shoes so damned much!

  • ri_dic

I’d kill for access to her coat closet.

  • siriuslover

LOVE Cathy Cambridge and I want that entire outfit.  Dear Camilla, please note that the 70s left a long time ago and people your age should not try to feather their hair like Farrah Fawcett.

  • Camilla never could keep up.  Had she bagged her prince the first time around, there’d be no Cathy Cambridge, because there’d be no Wills and Harry.  Camilla’s stripes and coat/dress length seem designed for maximum frumpiness. However, Cathy and her grandmum-in-law … PERFECTION!

  • nancylee61

I don’t really like this coat – and I usually love her coats!! Can’t put my finger on it. I think Camilla looks good for Camilla. I like her coat, actually, and the Queen’s hat cracks me up!!

  • Cathy’s great, as usual. Camilla looks like she’s wearing a rugby shirt. It also reminds me of those acrylic Lacoste dresses our mother had us wear when we were traveling during the very early seventies.

  • OneTwoThreeFashion

omg LOVE the coat AND the shoes AND the flowers pop of color!!

  • Derek_anny

Stupid photographer cutting Betty out of that first pic.  All I know is she wore a pale blue hat and matching something that goes well with the blue in Cathy’s coat.

  • Diego!

Cathy looks stunning! Camila honey, go on retire. And I don’t like the hat the Queen is wearing. She looks like “El Zorro”

  • mozzer0906

fabulous coat, fabulous shoes.  I love Cathy Cambridge

  • ccm800

I’m beginning to worry they are camouflaging her thin.
