Rose McGowan in Donna Karan

Posted on March 19, 2012

Tsk.

Miss Rose, we were all set to give you a “WERQ!” because we love this dress. But you had to go and ruin it, didn’t you?

Rose McGowan attends Orange Filmball Vienna 2012 in a Donna Karan gown.

Donna Karan Pre-Fall 2012 Collection/Model: Maud Welzen

You had to just flaunt your dirty pillows like the sinner you are.

Damn, girl. Way to ruin a great dress. You couldn’t hike that thing up?

We’ll never understand how anyone can walk around at what appears to be a formal event with the threat of nipple exposure happening at any moment. Seriously, what if she had to lean over or, God forbid, bend over? What if she sneezes? Or even breathes at all? Does she stand and sit rigidly upright, taking only tiny little breaths all night? Is a chest cold practically an inevitability? Ladies, please advise.

Edited to add: Please don’t make the comments section all about her plastic surgery yet again, kittens.

Her plastic surgeon should be shot.

  • http://twitter.com/april_anita April

Agree that it should’ve been hiked up, but I’m thinking double-stick fashion tape was in play. At least, I hope it was, for her sake.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=21413366 Evan Hart

I can’t comment. My dirty pillows are quite a bit more… pillowier…. than Rose’s. If I went out in public with a dress like that, I might as well be at the porn awards.

  • somethingiatetoday

I’m more concerned by what she did to her face.

  • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

TLo, I agree that the dress is precariously positioned, but did you not notice the horrors of her makeup? Surely even with the dress pulled up, this wouldn’t rate a WERQ…

    • MoHub

The makeup nearly trumped the dress. She looks like Cruella de Vil.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1741621869 Jacquie Scuitto

Another dress that can’t be worn with a bra — which she needs!

    • giiiirrrr

Somewhere in the Marie Claire offices, Joanna Coles is smiling at you.

    • siriuslover

I’m sure there’s probably some kind of structure or boning in the dress. To me it looks like it’s not big enough to yank past her boobs, kind of like trying on a leotard you wore when you were twelve and seeing how well it fits (it won’t…)

  • mellorcr

I’m a dressmaker, and it is possible to fit a dress like this so the girls stay in place even when bending over, but it needs to be custom fit, which does not seem to be the case for this one. It is not possible to “hike up” a strapless gown with a heavy skirt unless a painful amount of tape is used. A dress like this has a structured under-bodice that sits on the hips to support the top of the dress.   If you hike it up, it slides back down again in seconds until it is resting on the hips again. The correct way to do it is custom-made so the height of the bodice is correct for the person it is made for.

    • Richard Harper

      Completely This.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

      What she said.

    • Little_Olive

      Totally.

And I would add, it is not a matter of yankin’ the dress up, because the tips would torture her armpits and almost reach her chin; it is the cups that need more depth.

    • littlemac8

Love a dressmaking education.  Your explanation makes a lot of sense but I still wouldn’t go out of the house looking like my dress might slide down further any second!

      • http://profile.yahoo.com/DSSSOKRSBEP7YR5XA52446SPOQ Mary

Likewise, which is why I started reading Tom & Lorenzo…well, that and the fun of it. They sure know how to turn a phrase. Please, mellorcr, more comments in the future to educate the bitter kittens.

    • ballerinawithagun

You definiely know what you are talking about!

    • formerlyAnon

Thank-you for your lucid explanation. I knew what should be going on but could not explain it nearly this clearly.

    • emily mcginnis

so, then she needs it fitted for her because it definitely sits significantly higher on the model.

    • siriuslover

Ahhh, I should have read your comment before posting mine (about the boning)

  • http://www.facebook.com/kati.irons Kati Irons

The thing is, there are ways of working your boobs and this business right here is not one of those ways.  This business right here looks like it’s an accident.  It looks like the dress doesn’t fit right, and her poor boobs look like they’re desperately trying to hide.  You can hear them praying “Please don’t fall down. Please don’t fall down.”  A girl can show her ladies, she can even show this much of her ladies, if it’s in a dress that displays them to advantage in a way that makes it clear that YES, you may see THIS MUCH of my ladies, but dammed if you will be seeing a millimeter more!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1043171034 Tadiana Walton Jones

Also, because she pulled the dress down in order to show off the girls (or letting it slide down because it’s not fitted correctly to her), it’s puddling around her feet.  That dress looks so good on the model and so bad on Rose.  It’s a sin.

  • AthenaJ

She took an interesting and elegant dress and made it look cheap. For shame, Rose. We know you’ve got a nice rack, but you really don’t have to come THISCLOSE to flashing us all to prove it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=847525391 Barbara Lee Woodruff

I think the problem is that it doesn’t fit her right. But I can’t figure out if it’s too loose or too tight. It does need to sit higher on her torso. Maybe her rib cage is bigger than that of an anorexic 18-year-old model, so that the dress is too tight if she hikes it up. Or maybe it’s too loose altogether and is sliding down. Either way, it needed to be altered to fit her correctly. Do they do that with loaner dresses? Or do the celebs just have to wear stuff the way it is and do the best they can, fit-wise?

Or maybe she’s just wearing it that way deliberately, to show off the girls….

    • sleah_in_norcal

well, she’s not showing them to her advantage.  they look flat and droopy, like the dress is pulling them down to her waist.
      ouchy!

  • BrooklynBomber

I don’t like the dress all that much, but it looks good on the model and look ridic on Rose.

    • bitchybitchybitchy

I am not feeling the love for this dress, but it looks much better on the model than on Rose.  There are other ways to showcase the girls, sweetie.

  • MK03

That needs a hemming in the worst way.

  • lalahartma

She is looking great, except the boobages.

    • sleah_in_norcal

and the hideous makeup!  no to that icky orangey mouth.  and the smeared black eyes.

      • Snailstsichr

Maybe my monitor is different – her lips were a pretty coral to me. I thought her lipstick was the best part of the look.

  • unbornfawn

She managed to make the dress look as limp as her hair. For shame.

  • rawrgrowlrawr

At this point, I just feel sorry for her.

  • holdmewhileimnaked

i think she has to do it cos everyone else is doing it. really. kind of like the nude shoes or something. it’s stupid, i know, & she’s more interesting than most of them, ibid, but she does wanna get work. & it’s an industry that runs on a combo of thinking it’s far more clever than it is while drawing people in via the lowest of lowest common denominators almost every time. be it violence or pillows, there you go. & there, unfortunately, she went. but i wouldnt say she wouldve done it so poorly werent it expected & the rest of her looks wonderous so put a check down on the plus side for me.

ps. i can also vote personal preference once in a while, i guess.

    • sagecreek

If everyone else jumped off a bridge…?

      • luciaphile

But this is how fashion seems to work a lot of the time. Someone comes out with a dumbass idea and the next thing you know EVERYONE is wearing the same damn thing because they are afraid to say the emperor is buck naked.

        • http://www.wordydoodles.com WordyDoodles

          truly.

      • holdmewhileimnaked

thats only the first line of what i said.
i think people feel stifled cos, for decent reasons, they are no longer allowed to address her car accident, her subsequent insecurities, her plastic surgery. so, cos it’s easy to do it, they find me, either dont read or dont understand what i said & use that as a platform.

        • sagecreek

Chill, holdme. It’s a friendly site. I just don’t think anyone, famous or not, can be excused because “everyone else is doing it.” Sorry you felt offended.

          • holdmewhileimnaked

            please.

    • RebeccaKW

We are talking about a woman who wore a thong and thread to the MTV movie awards.  I don’t think following Hollywood style trends is high on her list.

      • holdmewhileimnaked

        i know who she is.
ever more reason to not give up who she was before everyone else jumped on the everlovin bandwagon trying [more or less] to be who she was when she was who she was before it was popular.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Christopher-Lally/1813707728 Christopher Lally

I think with Rose it is “go naked or go home.”

  • GTrain

Agreed. It would have been so pretty without all that cleavage. It’s kind of sad how that’s a default for so many actresses/celebs.

  • http://twitter.com/rmcgrudiva RL McGruder

I’d like to point to Sofia Vergara – a prime example of someone who knows how to show up in a perfectly fitted dress that shows off the girls spectacularly, not vulgarly.

  • crash1212

It’s a fab dress and I love the earrings – also, her bitch-I’m-fabulous pose in the first pic is the best in the biz. As for showing the dirty pillows, I’m with T Lo – I’ll never understand it. I figured that the rich and famous must be genetically engineered to keep those dresses from falling down…or maybe that skill was taught in the grad school portion of Celebrity College.

  • TheDivineMissAnn

Wonder if she pulled the dress down a bit for comfort?  If you look at the model’s picture, the dress is cutting deep into her armpits.  Looks uncomfortable to me.  It really is a beautiful dress.

    • kimmeister

Ha, yes, she was just avoiding pit stains!

  • Beardslee

    This isn’t sexy, it’s anatomical.

  • lrhoff

    Tacky and classless.

  • allisankelly

Yes, I really just want to  walk up to her and yank that up to cover her puppies. The make-up is doing her face no favors though, either.

  • Sophie Collier

It looks badly fitted to her and probably slipped down from its original position.  Or she just feels that her old girls only have a few good years left in them and she should get all the mileage she can.

  • Bozhi

Not attractive at all.  She ruined that beautiful dress.

  • Offbalance

Oh, her boobs are out? I was too distracted by her AWFUL PLASTIC FACE.  No seriously, I’m scared.  Hold me.

  • http://cheekypinky.wordpress.com/ Rebecca

At least her earrings are pretty?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Didn’t even notice do to the mammary accessories.

  • EmilyMullasWilson

She took a sexy, elegant gown and completely slut-ified it.

  • janetjb

The dress reminds me of a vase my mother had that I always loved.

Too bad the dress doesn’t fit Rose.

  • girliecue

I think the problem is that this dress is made for only girls with throw pillow-sized pillows.

  • sagecreek

Way too low cut. I agree.

  • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

Not the dress to go down a size on, Rose.

    • Imasewsure

I think she went up a size and it’s just sliding down!

      • http://twitter.com/cornekopia Shawn EH

It looks a little cramped around the middle. Maybe it just needs straps?

  • jcolli69

The model looks statuesque in the dress…Rose looks like she’s keeping things classy at the Porn Awards, picking up her trophy for Best Blow Job.

  • jw_ny

she may as well just go topless.  ridiculous, and a shame too, because the gown on the model is lovely.

  • clatie

Oh, c’mon.  She was great on “Designing Women”!

  • EveEve

Look at the model.  See how the hemline perfectly hits just a whisper above the floor in the front?  Then look at the mess at the bottom of Rose’s dress.  She’s melting.
Now, look at the bodice tips on the model. See how they point up and out just so- accentuating the elegant neck and sleek shoulders?  Now look at Poor Rose.  Poor, poor Rose.

    • formerlyAnon

Why loan a woman a gazillion dollar gown and not INSIST it be properly fitted?

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Its a damn shame what they did to that dress. I mean, if you’re going to go for it, show the navel as well Rose.

  • Kate4queen

I don’t like the dress anyway and she just makes it look worse.

  • http://www.facebook.com/mikemoralesLA Mike Morales

She really does know how to work a pose.  But I am fascinated by the near-nipple exposure at any time too.  It’s a great dress and she has the most beautiful skin, if you’re gonna expose it like that it better be. BTW, ever since I read she had a terrible car accident where her face was severely damaged I don’t comment on her surgery. It was necessary, NOT her freaking out about her age.  I give her a WERQ just for that.

  • Elizabeth Wiggs Maas

Yep, it’s aaaaall about the tape. And she’s so skinny that I’ll bet her pillows aren’t super heavy (and therefore unruly). If I were her, I would have also put those little skin-colored nip covers, just in case the fun bags DID pop out. Sometimes you can sweat through your fashion tape.

But all of that said, I think she looks great. I’ve come to expect a little bit of fun-baggery from her.

  • CarolinLA

I get being photographed with your titties exposed but how do you walk around and converse with people at the event itself?  And I think the dress looks like something Miss Sophia would design if he had balance issues.

  • cakesandale

The dress seems to have wilted and lost any sense of sharpness on her.

  • Cathy S

Hike that dress up. It looks incredibly dramatic on the model and an accident just waiting to happen on her. Plus I don’t need to see that much of her breasts. Not interested.

  • Allyson Wells

And if she’d pulled it up, it would have been the right length! The bunching all over the floor ruins the dress as much as the boobage.

  • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

I like the dress, but yeah, hike that shit up!

    I love her earrings though.

  • beebee10

Thanks for that “edited to Add” boys.
Love miss Rose but careful girl! I suspect that her rib cage is that of a woman and not a 15 yr old so she needed more room up there.

  • LambeeBaby

Maybe her nipples have glue on them.

  • Imasewsure

Someone has got to redo Sunset Boulevard and cast her as Norma Desmond…. maybe the horrible makeup and ruining the look of the dress is just pre-marketing for the role…pretty on the model though for sure…

  • Amy Ellinger

I’m sorry, it still looks like a bad prom dress to me. If it was different sheens in black, and not black-and-white, maybe it would get a pass.

If it doesn’t fit, a WERQ you won’t get!!!

  • Judy_J

It is a gorgeous dress….on the model, who obviously knows how the dress is supposed to be worn.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SEQSTTROV2O3U5WCMP5GUI2CTA Laura

The mis-displayed bosom bothers me less than the dress itself; shiny and bad-bridesmaidy.

  • MzzPants

I’m guessing that after the photo shoot, she spent the rest of the night with her arms crossed in front of her.

  • http://twitter.com/chylde bellalozza

No, no, she’s got the double sided sticky tape on those niplets.

  • http://twitter.com/chylde bellalozza

But hey, if she wasn’t showing off the dirty pillows, you’d accuse her of looking like a drag queen, which she does. Lord, what a load of botox…

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=579041922 August Galifi

it looks ridiculous and like it is just sliding down on her. The look is much more chic when it is worn properly. Rose managed to make it look like any ordinary low cut slut dress.

  • rainwood1

It’s all about the publicity.  The possibility of a nip slip generates more press than if she had the dress in its full upright and locked position.  Unfortunate, but true.  Potential wardrobe malfunction is the name of the game these days.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2B6U4UNVYIV5DLEG6Z24ALYOC4 Dan Alexander

I don’t know who this is! Certainly NOT Rose McGowan.

  • StrandedFashionista

Wow. What a way to absolutely KILL a dress.

  • spooki C

I refuse to believe that is the same dress in those pictures. She totally killed that thing and not in  a good way.

  • NatalieD28

I can almost feel the need to pull it up on my own body! Like, I’m pulling at my own dress just looking at it.

  • http://twitter.com/dollsaga Helen

looks elegant on the model, trashy on McGowan

  • Julie Fountain

It’s all about the doublestick tape, guys. That dress isn’t going anywhere.  Still, wearing it this way made a pretty dress look cheap.

  • TheOriginalLulu

Wow, that really is a beautiful dress. I have to agree about the excessive chest exposure, though. Damn girl. Granted, the boobage looks pretty spectacular, but we’re just seeing entirely too much of it.
I like that she went for big, showy earrings, but I think something’s missing. A big ring perhaps?

  • Pennymac

Is the the voluminous amount of fabric around the bottom pulling it down? Did she wear it like this on purpose? Hut 1, hut 2, HIKE! HIKE! HIKE!

  • Call me Bee

Wow–that dress certainly needs to be fitted on her correctly, since right now it is not.  She looks to be longer-waisted than the model, so the neckline is not getting up to where it’s supposed to be.  It’s a gorgeous dress, and she shoulda spent the extra bucks to have it fit, or even re-done, to her body.  Such a shame.  Plus–the orange-y lipstick is not helping her one bit.
    She shoulda stood in bed…

  • http://www.ellenciompi.com/ NurseEllen

I tried to post this earlier, but I guess it didn’t go through.  I think Miss Rose needs to look at John Singer Sargent’s “Madame X” to get the correct kind of inspiration for wearing a dress like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portrait_of_Madame_X

  • Jecca2244

how did the Donna Karan press team NOT have this tailored to her perfectly?

  • ccm800

You don’t for a minute think this was not the plan? “These paps will follow me everywhere as the greatest nip-slip possibility of the night!”

  • http://twitter.com/Kerry_McC Kerry McCombs

I can’t comment because all I want to say would betray your “Edited to Add.”

  • CatherineRhodes

She looks awful, head to toe. You must be in good moods to have allowed even a fleeting thought of a WERQ.

  • GorgeousThings

Please don’t make the comments section all about her plastic surgery yet again, kittens.

Well damn, who can see the dress past those…  oh.
She should at least wait for a week to 10 days after…  um…
Well what are we going to talk about? That’s one majorly large elephant in that room!

  • formerlyAnon

    “Ladies, please advise.”

Ahh, but ladies don’t know – because ladies do not appear in public in a garment that appears to be the human equivalent of a clever napkin-folding used to highlight the party favors.

  • MilaXX

Instead of a scroll down fug, she made this a scroll up fug. This would be really pretty if the bodice fit correctly. As it it she looks saggy and trashy.

  • Lisa

It’s a shame, because it’s a beautiful gown, but I can’t even pay attention to it, I’m so unnerved by the tits ready to pop out!  And I know it’s only an unmoving photograph, but I’m still eyeballing them nervously like they’re going to fall out anyway!

  • aristida_girl

Wow, that dress looks terrible on her and she needs to leaves her face alone, she is starting to look like Lindsey Lohan…oops, sorry TLo, couldn’t help it…

  • snarkykitten

homegirl’s face is also looked ragged

  • BrightsideSusan

There is plently of fabric scrunched at her waist to indicate that she could have pulled the gown up.  I suspect many of these women are so insecure that they feel they must display the pillows or people might forget they have them!  Teenaged girls are frequently guilty of the same thing.

  • Nora Mulllin

I wish it fit her. She’d probably look really great but all I can focus on is the fact that if she inhales or shifts even slightly everyone will have a fantastic view of her tits.

  • http://twitter.com/BeantownMrs Praggya R. Barretto

The only redeeming thing about this outfit are those earrings.

  • Neverbuynewclothes

Does anyone else think her eyes look drugged?  Is there a special drop they put in to create bedroom eyes?  If so, she has had a little too much.

  • akprincess72

It’s not how I would EVER choose to accentuate my girls…

  • AngDM

The whole dress sits low on her.  I know the bodice is the glaring issue but there’s a trickle down effect.  It’s just a few inches but if the split in the black bodice happened just a titch higher the white underskirt would make her look taller.  You know, like the model.

  • MoreShoes

She really managed to ruin the dress. On the model it looks chic and sophisticated, on her vulgar.

  • http://twitter.com/stopENtalk Brittany Johnstone

Sooo… why would a designer (or their team) ever lend a dress out to someone knowing it wouldn’t fit them the way it was designed to be worn? And, why would a stylist (or celeb) choose to wear something that is so obviously not working the way it is meant to?

The original isn’t even that spectacular! Gorgeous skirt, but the twin triangles are aggressive and off-putting.

    So much head scratching!

  • betty language

you know…she’s almost 39 (i’m almost 37) and if i had lovely breasts that could stand up on their own like that, i just might show them off, too.  i don’t think it’s particularly stylish to have them on the verge of total exposure, but it’s understandable to show them off.

  • TieDye64

Well, she basically ruined what was an otherwise pretty fabulous dress. This is a tacky trend that I wish would DIE.

  • Beth G

The lipstick color is also horrendous.

  • mayavaly

This dress is just begging to be worn by Angelina. Can you imagine?

  • http://janitesonthejames.blogspot.com/ Vic

She looks like she’s been rode hard.

  • ChristySchiff

I know there’s no point in commenting on a post so old – but I loved that you edited the post to advise that we keep our snarking to the boobage being shown, and not the surgery face.  This cracks me up.  And though I haven’t read the rest of the comments (’cause I’m not the best of bitter kittens today), I feel sure that the snark was kept in line.  This place makes me happy.
