Pairs Division: Lewis and Danes

Posted on March 22, 2012

God, we miss Homeland. It’s been too long since Claire Danes scared us with her crazyface.

Damian Lewis and Claire Danes attend the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Presents An Evening with “Homeland” in California. Claire wore a Giambattista Valli dress paired with Irene Neuwirth earrings.

HE: Has been working out! Or that’s an unusually well-fitted jacket. We are so very NOT loving the trend toward fitted one-button sports coats and suit jackets. That split at the bottom rarely works on most men and truth be told, we don’t even think it works all that well on the supremely toned Damian here. Although that could also be due to the fact that it actually is just a bit small on him. This is a look – velvet tuxedo jacket, white dress shirt, tight jeans – that works really well for a lot of men. We both have velvet jackets and they’re among the most versatile items in our closets. Boys, you should run out and get one immediately. But unlike Damian, you should get one that actually fits you. This could’ve been a near-flawless look for him, but those tight, short sleeves and that gap at the bottom leave us no choice:  Score: 6.5/10. A shame, because we really love this look in theory.

SHE: Should soften that blonde. It’s starting to look a little harsh on her. This is a stylish and well-paired look. Not everyone could make those clashing prints work, but she somewhat wisely kept the look simple. The only color added is that slash of red across her waist, which was another wise choice because it provides the eye a definitive line so that the prints don’t blend into each other. We’re not crazy in love with the shoes but again, they were a good choice for keeping the outfit from looking too mismatched. Good job. Score: 8.5/10.

Combined Score:  7.5/10. That seems about right.

one should think with access to the best colorists in Hollywood, Claire could do better than what my mother always referred to as “bottled blond”…..

    • LeoBloke

My mom called it “suicide blonde”, i.e. dyed by her own hand

      • miagain

Here’s to you mother… “suicide blond”… you made my day!!

        • ALBERTA

@twitter-22869520:disqus my best friend’s ṡiṡter brought in $14392 past month. she iṡ getting paid on the computer and got a $546OOO home. All she did was get lucky and make use of the inṡtruc[email protected]:disqus hown on this webṡ

      • Yeah, that song is stuck in my head now. 🙂

      •  So THAT’s where that phrase came from!!!

    • Anathema_Device

Over the past 6 months, I’ve noticed more and more women on the red carpet who have hair color that is terrible for their skin tones. Way too many harsh blonds.

      • dress_up_doll

I’ve noticed it as well and it’s been going on for a while now. So, I suppose it’s officially a thing, which undoubtedly will be picked up by the unwashed masses. Le sigh.

      •  I think Lindsay Lohan is the worst offender.

        • Anathema_Device

Heh…you don’t have to limit that statement to hair color. Keep that in the cut+paste for hair, makeup, plastic surgery, sartorial, and behavioral transgressions, too.

        • lordandtaylor

You got that right, but let’s try not to mention Ms Lohan in polite conversation.

        • Pcatt

How bout Joanna Coles on PR All Stars?

      • TheOriginalLulu

So true! The idea that any shade of blonde is always going to be youthful and flattering on anybody is not true. It’s crazy how many women are running around with AWFUL blonde hair, just for the sake of being blonde. If it isn’t the correct shade for your coloring, it will make you look rough.

  • I think Claire looks near perfect here. 🙂
But Damian looks like he has been shopping in the Juniors department.

    • He looks like a 15 year old wearing his Bar MItzvah jacket.

      • melizer

I was so surprised to scroll down and read “well-fitted jacket”!  Chris Farley singing “Fat Guy In A Little Coat” came immediately to mind and made me laugh…not to say he’s at all fat, just the idea of the comically small jacket.

      • That he bought before having a growth spurt. 🙂

  • VicksieDo

She looks amazing~~  He scares me, even off set!

  • Agreed on all points. It’s amazing how good she does look, given that weirdly-shaped floppy bodice.

  • Lilithcat

I don’t know.  I like the dress in theory, but the top gives her an awfully droopy-looking bust.  And I’d have taken the skirt up a bit, to a just above-the-knee length.

    • RebeccaKW

       Agree with the hem length

    • DISAGREE with the hem length

  • I don’t know.  Claire Danes always looks like she wants to vomit. Cute outfit though.

  • I would have to agree with you both, Gentlemen.  Damian, hot as he looks. (and lordy does he ever), just doesn’t get all the way there. Before reading your commentary, I had sussed out the same stuff you had, I the fit IS a little off. Too short in the sleeve and a skosh too tight across the armseye.  And I’m with you in the hating of the gap under the button thing that is all over the place now.

    Claire looks lovely, and comfortable.

    • LANDRU3000

I’m seeing this trend of jackets on men getting tighter and smaller continuing until they are just little boleros.

      •  Which seems absurd from a sales standpoint, since only a vanishingly small number of men actually look GOOD in that sort of proportioning.  Even some of the runway models showing these styles of jackets look like their clothes shrunk overnight.

        • ballerinawithagun

Looks like they just went through their growth spurt. Ha! Ha!

          •  too true!

          • Anathema_Device

Sometimes I accidentally put my daughter’s clothes in my son’s laundry basket of clean clothes to fold. He’ll humor us by trying on a shirt or sweater. She’s 13 and 5’5″…he’s 17 and over 6’4″. Hilarity ensues.

          • kimmeister

Years ago, a friend of mine apparently got some of his laundry mixed up with his (very tall) sister’s.  He got dressed in the dark to go to work.  You can imagine the ribbing he got when day broke and everyone realized he was wearing flared jeans.

      • j_anson

Wow, I desperately want the fashion world to impose boleros on guys. Payback for so many ridiculous fashion trends for women. (They DID try to impose the dropped crotch, but I think most guys just looked at that and laughed. Boleros might actually be achievable.)

        • formerlyAnon

Oh, no. Because then we’d have to look at them.

  • jw_ny

He…I agree that the jacket’s fit is too tight, length is too short, and overall just seems small on him.  I thought the sleeve length seemed right though…seems like the perfect amount of shirt cuff showing…no?  I don’t think of him as being sexy at all…but he has a sexy kind of quality to him here for some reason…idk why.   bump up to 7.5 for that.  😉

She…I love the top and skirt combo…especially with the slim red belt.  Agree with TLo comments on hair and shoes.  8.5 seems about right.

  • Oh wow, I didn’t even realize Claire was wearing separates until you said anything – I think they’re a little *too* similar to really make the clashing patterns thing work, but that’s just me.

He is totally my favorite redhead, but that outfit is doing nothing for me. A shame.

  • I can’t wait for fall so I can get Showtime again. Homeland and Inside the NFL are both awesome.

I really like Claire’s outfit. And I’m completely behind the dislike of the one-button suit jacket.

  • janetjb

Damian was so very close to looking fantastic. The devil’s in the details.

  • StillGary

I’m sorry that I’m so very preoccupied by the moving American Apparel guy — but right now he’s doing that awesome shirt move that reminds me of the wrestler challenge on PR – “Roab-reveal! Robe-reveal!

  • HE looks as if he grabbed an outgrown coat without looking at it. Call me old school but smoking jackets are for relaxing at home and should stay there.

  • Judy_J

Claire looks better with a darker hair color.  This blonde is too brassy.  But check out those lashes…looks like the Latisse is working.

    • melizer

I can’t believe anyone hears the possible side-effects and says “okay!”

  • Monabel

Those mismatched prints look harmonious to me.

  • I think she looks great, really polished and fashionable without being too glossy. He looks like he’s wearing her jacket.

  • Pants_are_a_must

I’m surprised Damian Lewis isn’t featured more regularly, considering your affinity for Lady Gaga’s ginger handler.

Danes’ look is nicely done, if a bit yawn-worthy. Maybe it’s the colors.

  • nannypoo

His teeny little jacket makes me laugh.

  • Anathema_Device

Right as always, T Lo. Lewis actually looks uncomfortable in his jacket. His arms are sticking out like he couldn’t lower them to his sides if wanted to. Danes looks great in that outfit.

  • I quite like her look.  His jacket could stand to be bigger, but over all I like them both.

  • siriuslover

He looks like he tried on a little kid jacket. And her hair color is not great. I can feel the hair wanting to break off. Whatevs. I’m in a mood today and I’m gonna take it out on all the little fashionista celebs.

  • FashionShowAtLunch

Although I’m not generally a fan of the mid-length skirt, these proportions are fantastic on her.

These two have such incredible chemistry on the show, and while the styling might not be perfect, I think they even light up the red carpet.

  • MissFern

Damian is definitely a GILF (G is for ginger, of course).

  • BrooklynBomber

    Should soften that blonde.
First thing I thought, too. It’s the wrong shade for her skin color.

  • serenitynow02

I dunno. Clare looks like an Executive Assistant here and Damian looks like he just woke up and grabbed his son’s jacket by accident. Meh.

  • CPK1

I agree with TLo. She looks lovely minus the hair color. WTF?? It looks like the color I dyed my hair when I was 15. I wanted it to be white blonde so I left it on extra time. All I got was neon yellow with black roots. My mum cried when she saw me. He is too tall to do shrunken jacket although I like the components of the outfit. I think he is sexy, tho’.

  • NurseEllen

Is her outfit a dress or a skirt/blouse?  I’m asking because of TLo’s reference to “clashing prints”, a clash which clearly would be intentional in a dress, but not so in a combo.  The red belt *is* perfect both in color and diameter.  And here’s a hint for Damian: if you can see the white of the shirt through the buttonhole when the jacket is buttoned, it’s too tight!

  • Damien is hot!

I love Claire’s outfit. Would wear it immediately.

  • Sara__B

His coloring isn’t suited for that intentionally messy, unshaven look. He looks scary, not handsome. (Call security! Some weird dude has grabbed hold of Miss Danes!)

  • Snailstsichr

Sorry to disagree with you, but you forgot to add the extra points to Damian for being a ginger. Le Sigh! And don’t forget those intense blue eyes…
Oh wait, we were judging clothing, weren’t we? oops.

  • People with that pale ginger complexion should never EVER wear white.  It just makes them look all pink and slightly boiled.  He would have looked so much better with a soft blue or grey shirt.

  • JohannaEG

When did Claire Danes and Kirsten Dunst become twins?

    • Thank you! I never know which one I’m looking at.

  • Matt Bailer

Hey TLo, any chance you guys might start blogging Homeland next season?  It’s such a great drama and now that I know you guys are watching it, I can’t imagine not knowing your thoughts on each episode……

  • Spicytomato1

I love all the elements of his outfit, I would love for my husband to want to wear this. Too bad about the jacket fit.

I love all the elements of her outfit, too, and I think they’re put together quite nicely. Hair and makeup look good, too. I’m not inclined to quibble about the color because I’ve seem much worse.

  • aimee_parrott

She: looks great.  He: well, he almost got it right.  The jacket just looks silly.  Go up a size.  Or two.

I can’t wait for this show to come back.  Thank goodness for Justified, and Mad Men in (let’s see) 3 days, 1 hour and 11 minutes on the West Coast.  Not that I’m counting.

    • MilaXX

Agreed. The jacket would be spot on if it didn’t look like it belonged to his younger, smaller brother. I share your love of Justified. Tim O is a hottie.

  • What I like about her outfit is that it looks like a regular woman could pull that off too. You don’t always want stars rigged out in “normal” clothes but once in a while, it’s nice to look at a picture and think “Oh, I could do that.” He just needs a jacket that actually fits. Once it’s got that split on the bottom, it’s no good.

  • DinahR

I’m mentally refitting that jacket and I think they look great!  I reallllly like her outfit.

I miss these two and I miss Homeland.  When is it back?

  • AudreysMom

just have to say that Damian Lewis and his partner, the ever lovely and incredibly talented Helen McCrory are my new favorite celebrity couple (in other words, Claire who?)

  • bluefish

I can’t even focus on what he’s wearing and don’t much care.   Cannot get over how sexy he looks from the neck up — That crooked smile, those eyes … Whew

  • alyce1213

I’ve been searching everywhere for my 14-year-old son’s misplaced “dressy” jacket — et voila!
6.5 is way too high for that travesty. 4.0 tops – hand in pocket, weathered jeans that just look dirty, no effort.Too bad, he’s such a hot ginger.Agree about Claire’s hair — but she looks fine otherwise.  And her lashes are so-o-o-o-o long.

  • formerlyAnon

I *hate* the open-at-the-bottom jacket, it always looks too small to me, even on the beanpoles at whom I prefer to gaze.

He’s looking good (despite the odd posture, maybe that’s the jacket?), and it clouds my judgement so I’ll not attempt to score.

She is looking better than the sum of her parts, by far, so I’ll stifle my instinct to award the hair & the animal print lower marks than they truly deserve, here. The belt was genius. 8.5 sounds about right. Close to a 9, though.

  • kimmeister

LOVE her outfit.  Tops with some volume in front are great for us small-busted gals.

  • Joyce VG

Really love her outfit and he looks so handsome (a bit casual tho.) I look forward to TLo’s reviews of Homeland when it comes back.  Please say you will!

  • lordandtaylor

I hate the “I borrowed my little brother’s sportcoat” look. One would think these hollywood types would by jackets that fit. Yet another example of being to lazy to try on the clothes or go to a good tailor.

They both look a bit washed out.

  • Neverbuynewclothes

is anyone going to mention the shine on her face?  A more matte face might have made the hair color less startling.   Also at that hem length the ensemble looks a bit executive assistant.  Not much shorter, but a little.

  • I love her dress. He looks like he borrowed my blazer. Or his wife’s. Or some ladies. You get my point.

  • Lilak

Why did I have to double-check that it was in fact Claire Danes?  Is it the extra-bright hair color that’s making her face look different, or something else?  (Or is it just me?)

  • ThaliaMenninger

His jacket’s too small and her skirt is too long. Next!

  • ThaliaMenninger

His jacket’s too small and her skirt is too long. Next!

  • rainashes

I miss Homeland too. Also I wish Claire Danes would fix her hair color and either grow her hair out a bit or cut it (she looks so lovely with longer or shorter hair, but this mid-length is not my favorite).

I don’t normally care for ginger lads (ginger girls, though. . .) but Damien is growing on me a bit.

  • turtleemily

    Mmm… Ginger Ninja…

  • holdmewhileimnaked

was there not a time w/in the rememberable recent past where that shirt-filled gap between the jacket & the fingers was the correct way to go about things? you can put correct in quotes [or at least single quotes] if you want. i am just curious. i kinda sorta remember it that way but, in this case, you can
    sign me,
in other news, even i really like her outfit. after all these years, unobtrusively seems the best way to wear an animal print. unless, of course, you have both the chops & the wherew/al to go completely, sardonically over the top. few do.

  • Judih1

agree with you about her hair. I know actresses love blonde hair, but this color of blonde is not working for her

  • ccm800

Those prints are pretty easy, they’re somehow practically neutral.
As for crazyface – at least you get a big dose from the PRAS hostess…she has crazyface to spare!

  • Pcatt

I really like Damian Lewis but I think he looks ridiculous here.  That jacket looks small enough to fit Claire Danes instead.  And I like her outfit but it looks a bit “secretarial” to me.

  • marywv

She looks really pretty here. So does he. I love her shirt/skirt combo, but agree the shoes are meh.

  • MattCooper27

I’ve loved Claire Danes ever since My So-Called Life. Damien Lewis is gorgeous and makes me melt. The jacket, to me, seems more than a little bit small on him. But I don’t care. He’s so hot!

  • Patricia Gillett

ITA about the blond. Horrible choice for her. Some of these ladies need to check their color choices under pap lighting, not salon lighting.
