Pairs Division: Blunt and McGregor

Posted on March 06, 2012

Um, guys? You’re two of our very favorite celebs in the world and we’re thrilled to see you side by side like this, but …

Emily Blunt and Ewan McGregor attend the premiere of “Salmon Fishing In the Yemen” in LA. Emily Blunt wore a Naeem Khan dress.

Naeem Khan Fall 2012 Collection

Could you please not pose like you’re at the end of a 12-hour bender?  She looks like she’s about to topple over.

But enough foreplay.

SHE: Is rocking the hell out of that dress. It practically screams “Emily Blunt” so we would have been very disappointed if she couldn’t pull this one off. Hair and makeup are cute; jewelry is perhaps a bit too low-key (chunky would’ve worked well here), and the shoes are also cute, but perhaps a bit on the heavy side. Although we do love the fact that her ankles are wearing bowties. Score: 8.5/10. Not a lot wrong here, but also not selling it as hard as she could.

HE: Looks adorable. We would like to point out that he is on the red carpet, not wearing a tie, and yet he looks suave and not at all underdressed even though he’s got his arm around someone wearing thousands of dollars of clothing and jewelry. Two reasons for that: First, his jacket is buttoned. Boystars, we cannot stress this enough; closing your jacket will make you look slimmer, taller, more dressed up, and less sloppy. It takes 2 seconds of effort, you little shitheads. You can’t manage it?

Okay, sorry. We got a little angry there. Anyway, the second reason he looks good without a tie is because his shirt is pressed and his collar is standing up, something else that a lot of boystars can’t seem to handle. We love the pants (LOVE!), and his hair looks great. We don’t even mind the slightly retro ear hoop. All in all, it’s a fabulous little casual menswear look that manages to do the job for pictures. Score: 8.5/10. Get your damn hand out of your pocket, Ewan.

Combined Score: 8.5/10. They don’t look perfect and neither of them are wearing anything particularly difficult to wear, but they both look damn good.

    • MilaXX

Agree with the scores here. They look great and appropriate for the event. I almost want to score Ewan higher just for putting in the effort.

      • http://profiles.google.com/ameliaheartsu Amelia Logan

He probably has a stylist I would say his own personal effort is probably minimal.

        • MilaXX

He probably does use a stylist. Still he gets points for knowing when the occasion calls for using one, which is more than 80% of male Hollywood.

        • berkeleygirl

I’m not sure.  Some of the chicest shots I’ve seen of him have been candid, on-the-street – especially remembering the one posted here of him on the bike with his dog.  If memory serves, I think he was wearing an ascot tie with a tweed jacket – better than an editorial.

    • http://twitter.com/hmbscully WendyD

      He looks FANTASTIC!

    • http://www.facebook.com/madgeylou Megan Dietz

oh my gosh they are both so pretty! i love emily’s hair.

      • http://www.facebook.com/madgeylou Megan Dietz

and ewan’s everything! the scots get me every time!!

    • poggi

Thanks as usual for making my morning.  I have just spent a least 30 very enjoyable minutes catching up on all the posts and comments.  Also, they do look nice.  I love her dress, although I agree she doesn’t seem to be putting much effort or energy into it.  But if you are going to phone it in, at least make the dress do some work for you rather than resorting to a black caftan.

    • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

You’ll be pleased to hear that I was taking a picture with my former fencing coach and some other alumni the other day, and just as we all got into position, he yelled, “Wait!” so he could button his jacket. I immediately thought of you guys.

LOVE her dress. I think I like it better with the stiffer skirt on the model, but Emily is actually wearing it for longer than two minutes, so I suppose there’s not much to be done about that.

      • H3ff

        “former fencing coach” HAHA

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

My husband and son were both in a wedding this weekend, and my 7 year old in pictures has his hands down and his jacket buttoned.  His father… does not.  I take this as further proof that I’m a much better mommy than my mother-in-law :P

    • http://twitter.com/taijuuuh Taija HU!

That dress is so, so adorable. And he is just so delicious looking… So needless to say, I approve of practically everything going on in these photos. Even the fact that Emily looks like she had a little bit too much to drink beforehand.

    • MzzPants

I LOVE that dress!  And Ewan can dress however he wishes.  I’ll still take him.  The fact that he’s usually cute and stylish doubles the pleasure.

      • angela rose

I hear you.  Any man who can make me swoon while playing Renton doesn’t need to do much… all the better when he does.  sigh.

    • Laura Rizzo

they’re two of my favourites as well. and Ewan in particular is aging amazingly- he just gets more beautiful!

    • http://twitter.com/watchinginkdry Dr Skylaser

Hm. . . I don’t agree with you here.  I think his hair is oddly solid-looking, and hers is that flatironed-within-an-inch-of-its-life look I thought we were done with (which gives her sort of a bobble-head look.  Plus, the dress is mebbe four inches too long on her?–it would be so much better if it were just above knee-length like on the model.  And I’m not at ALL sure about the cut on his pants, but that might just be warping from the misguided hand in his pocket.

      • marcella peek

Totally agree on the dress length.  At the knee would be so much better on her particularly if she’s going to be wearing leg shortening ankle straps.  As it is, her calves look four inches high.

        • mshesterp

yes yes–love the pattern, but the proportions are off.  If it was the length of the runway version, I’d be thrilled.  And maybe some red/burgundy accessories?  I love black/red/white.  Something to make it pop a little more.  But I’m not mad at it/her.

        • http://twitter.com/Eovaai S R

Yes, that’s exactly my problem with the dress. It’s too long and makes her look squat.

    • 3boysful

[Quietly raises hand] Um?  While I think Em looks good, she would get more points from me if (1) the hem were shorter (maybe it’s the photo angle, but the that full skirt seems to be swallowing her a bit), and (2) she weren’t wearing ankle straps.

      Ewan looks fab.

    • kingderella

looking good, both of them! i probably would have rated blunt even higher, those shoes make the look!

    • dress_up_doll

Awww, I think they look close to perfect. I’d bump their score up to possibly a 9.5. The hoop earring takes away.5, but he’ll know next time.

    • Verascity

Really? I think the fit is odd as hell on the dress — it makes her look both shorter and wider than she is.

    • http://twitter.com/jerseyemo Edwina

Beginners was my absolute favorite movie of the year. Love Ewan, love Emily and the both of them are so adorable.

      • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

I just saw that and I really liked it. He was excellent, as always.

    • http://twitter.com/arodenha Alli

From some angles she looks like Katy Perry. Weird.

He is adorable and my favorite forever and ever. He could show up in a burlap sack and duct tape pasties and he’d still get a 10 from me.

      • merciblahblah

I totally thought it was Katy perry from the thumbnail, and was all, “Uh, what da HAIL is Katy Perry doing with my boyfriend Ewan????!!!” I was ready to scratch her eyes out. Now I have to scratch Emily Blunt’s eyes out. Ah well. At least I’ll score an adorable dress in the process.

        • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

But Blunt is already married, I believe, so she’s safe:)

    • http://twitter.com/The_Bugler Anna Daugherty

I think the dress is cute, but the length is better on the model.

    • miwome

I am pretty sure I would hate Ewan’s look on most men, but…it’s Ewan.

    • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Definitely feeling the E&E love here. They both are dishing out with the, “Yeah, I’m famous, but it’s really no big deal” thing. Love them. Okay, so I have ore major jones for Ewan. So sue me.

      • Laura Rizzo

i might have to sue you for sole custody. he’s all mine! :)

        • http://joyouslifesf.wordpress.com Kiltdntiltd

Uh oh, smack down over Ewan! Can’t we share?

          • Cautia

Ewan belongs to everybody. Let’s not be possessive, eh? ;)

            • Laura Rizzo

in theory, i’ll share, but when i look at him, i can’t help seeing THE PRECIOUS.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HBS4KWJ6XTPDEL2JMD37ZS5YHA Ben

      she looks adorable

    • janetjb

I don’t understand why male stars (or their assistants) don’t take their shirts to the cleaners and ask for extra starch.

    • sarahofalessergod

God, he looks edible.  I wish he never wore clothes at all, but at least he always looks put together when he does.

    • kimmeister

The length of the skirt and the ankle straps make her shins look like they’re 2 inches long.

    • janetjb

They look terrific, a little effort goes a long way doesn’t it?

    • Tashina Savage

LOVE Ewan! Such a style icon for me in the men’s realm of fashion (and I adore men’s fashion, despite being female). I love how he always puts forth an effort and makes it look so effort free.

    • RebeccaKW

She looks good, but I also wish for a bit a jewelry.  That dress is fabulous.

He is yummy.  I could look at pictures of him all day.  LOVE the pants.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=49702581 Susan Bullard Mayer

Her dress is too long.  Even if it were a more flattering length, all I see is the dress.

      HE is HOT.

    • Sara Leigh Merrey

      I don’t like the dress.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1344922354 Eric Scheirer Stott

I think that his hair probably looked great two days ago, but it could stand a wash now.

      • formerlyAnon

        Or a bucket less product.

    • bluefish

Oh come on now, TLo … They look terrific together and part of it is that they are kind of falling into each other in what I consider a really really good way.  That dress was made for her and he’s one of my all time favorites always.  LOVE him to death and I will be copying his outfit.  Part of what’s making this work is not just the banging clothes but that they kind of look like they let loose and went there.  Great publicity for their film.

    • nannypoo

When I was a little girl my grandmother made me birthday cakes that had a Barbie-type doll stuck into a bell-shaped cake so it looked like a big skirt. They were shaped a lot like the third picture above except that there were no legs. This is a strange way to start the day.

    • Cathy S

They look great. I love the little bow ties on her shoes. I, too, love Ewan’s pants.

    • mjude

there is just something about ewan. love him.. both look fab.

    • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

I swoon for Ewan McGregor almost as much as I swoon for Colin Firth…

    • Judy_J

The proportions of the dress aren’t quite right…I think the shorter length of the runway version looks better.  Emily’s version is about three inches too long.

    • ChaCha_70

Okay, did anyone else notice how flawless both of their complexions are? Jealous! And we know this isn’t photoshopped, right? What is their secret to such beautiful skin?

      • meowing

        Tres expensive dermatologists.

    • http://asskickingadviser.com/ Ass Kicking Adviser

Oh come on (she says whining), her hair and make-up are so perfect. Just because she makes it look effortless is no reason to give her points off. 9? 9.5? No? I’m giving her a 9.

    • Jessi03

I want to steal her dress and eat him with a spoon.

    • Terence Ng

From the angle of the shots, it looked like he was actually wearing an interesting collared shirt, but alas…

      Still, he’s gorgeous.

    • CQAussie

Ewan is sooooo pretty.  Love him.

Love Emily too but those are the wrong shoes for that dress.

    • mozzer0906

      Sigh, he looks phenomenal!

    • Anathema_Device

Fantastic dress, but I’m not loving it on her. I like the length better on the model. Could be the weird angle on her pic, though. Oh, and the ankle straps are also wrong with that dress length.

You forgot the third reason the more casual look works on him: He’s Ewan McGregor! heh

Pretty much agree with your scores, but I might knock a half point or so off of Blunt’s.

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Precisely.  He is inherently chic and stylish, so he doesn’t need as much help from the clothes as a lot of men.

    • julnyes

I find this slightly difficult to judge fairly because I find them both so likable – eh who cares about fair – 9’s all around!

    • http://smalltownbigwardrobe.wordpress.com Catherine

Absolutely love Emily’s hair. Such a cute cut/style on her!

Would not have guessed that to be a Naeem Khan dress.

    • Kate4queen

They both look lovely :) and I’m kind of looking forward to the movie too. :)

    • EEKstl

They are adorable, tho I wish she were wearing a necklace.  Don’t mind the shoes.  He just looks dreamy.

    • http://twitter.com/hamsteaky Maria Smith

He is just yummy yum yum.

    • miagain

I love her dress… I simply LOVE her dress, by the way, did I mention that I love her dress??!!
      and he’s pretty fab too…

    • Pants_are_a_must

Ewan McGregor, the only man who can still rock an ear hoop on the red carpet.

I could read your rants at the boy stars all day. Love!

    • http://twitter.com/Kerry_McC Kerry McCombs

Ewan makes me swoon. Always and forever.

    • http://twitter.com/VeronikaMK Veronika Kaufman

He looks fabulous. She is Emily Blunt hence can do no wrong. Well, practically no wrong: bows and shoes should never be seen together.

    • BPlease

This is possibly my favorite look each of them has ever worn.  They look fantastic.

    • LesYeuxHiboux

Guys! Can we be friends? And can I have Emily’s dress when she’s done with it? Love that print.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

That man is sex on a stick.
He’s kind of reminding me of Wham-era George Michael here. In a good way. I’m not actually sure there is a bad way though…

      • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

Actually, baggier would be the “bad way”. He is perfect.

    • LuisaNL

he is AWESOME! Ewan, call me.

    • crackineggs

Love her dress.  Somewhere Kenley is gnashing her teeth, wishing she had come up with it.  How have I lived so long and not realized Ewan is a redhead?  Not paying attention – 100 lines.  He would only look better is he was wearing a kilt though…

    • http://michjeff-quiltersparadise.blogspot.com/ Michelle Young

      You said it guys.

    • formerlyAnon

I can’t argue with the scores. I’d quibble and say either no ankle straps or go up to the knee with the hem, but it’s a quibble.  With him, the quibble is irrational: I don’t love the hair and I hate the half-way to a beard look.

    • SapphoPoet

      They look great!

    • cleep1000

If you haven’t seen “Beginners” you simply must. You will fall in love with Ewan all over again.

    • homespunner

Look at your man, now back to Ewan, now back at your man, now back to Ewan. Sadly, he isn’t Ewan…

    • CatherineRhodes

If Emily had just added a cool, chunky necklace I would have advocated for a two-way WERQ.

    • ccm800

I would have skooched them up to 9s simple because they look so effortlessly chic

      • NasserShaheen

        And agreed. J’adoreable.

    • Call me Bee

They look adorable, and I did not know they were a couple (though I really don’t keep up wth that stuff unless it’s posted here…)  I can’t think of two cuter people.  In beautiful clothes.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=847525391 Barbara Lee Woodruff

They aren’t actually a couple. They’re just on the red carpet together flogging their current movie. Ewan has been married for years. I looked it up and he and Eve Marakis have been together for 17 years and have 3 kids. Just another reason to love the man.

    • jw_ny

      They look great.

I’m not sure she needs a chunky necklace. The dress has a busy print, full skirt, and she has bows on her shoes. Keep the rest simple…which she did.

I’d give them both a 9.5, the half point deduction is for her sloppy arm on Ewan and his hand in pocket.

    • Leeloo_Multipass

I LOATHE tea-length skirts and dresses. They almost always make whoever’s wearing them look like their legs are 2 inches long.  Not a good look.  That being said I do like Emily Blunt’s dress – I wish it were shorter (obvs), and she had different shoes and accessories.

Ewan looks fab as usual, though his pants are a bit wrinkly. Maybe if they were in a slightly heavier fabric they would hang better?

    • Cautia

OY he looks really f’ing good. Except for that earring. Ew.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=847525391 Barbara Lee Woodruff

Love her, really love him. The way he’s touching her waist is making me all hot and bothered. If you need me, I’ll be in my bunk….

    • http://twitter.com/jaythenerdkid Aaminah Khan

That dress was so much cuter when it hit at the knee rather than at that awkward mid-calf length. I live for the day when that length just ceases to exist.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I don’t like Emily’s shoes as well as you do, but her dress is very pretty (if a skooch too long), and Ewan’s pants are very cool.

    • Emmyllou

Quibble, quibble. Give them a 9, for Crying Out Loud!

      • Lisa

Here here!  So few celebs really earn it, but two of them at once?  Yes, give them both the half a point you shaved off!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IEBOA5WAAIRKYXLALBIKMDFKKE abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz

i still have a sense of feeling that Ewan is bi…

    • PeaceBang

They’re so beautiful (and he’s so freaking hott) I had to tilt my head sideways and sigh audibly. Is it too much to ask that I just happen to run into Ewan McGregor on the street someday so I can grab him by the lapels, back him against the nearest building and snog him silly?

    • kimberlini

I absolutely LOVE what he’s wearing!!  Must keep photo for future reference for future boyfriend!  She looks cute too although I agree that the dress should be a bit shorter.

    • Zippypie

Ewan just gets hotter and hotter with age.  I also love the pants but not the pocket pool.

Her dress is perfect for her – I just wish she’d stand up straight and not drape OVER Ewan.  He may not be that tall, but she doesn’t have to bend over like she’s a foot taller.

    • Lisa

I agree with the score – they both look gorgeous and fabulously put together!

    • http://profiles.google.com/h.e.waddell Heather Waddell

I agree with their separate scores, but I do feel that there should be a pairs division category for “do they look like they belong together?” They both look great, but when I look at the picture of them together all I can think of is how distracting his pants are. I love them, they’re awesome, but they’re not the pants I would wear if I was going to hang out with a girl wearing that dress.

    • filmcricket

She looks wide from the side and stumpy from the front. She should have had it hemmed.

      He looks super-cute.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jane-Morris/1076502799 Jane Morris

Wow, really? I think the dress looks dumpy as hell at that length.

    • quiltrx

      He is SO hot.  Wow.

And I LOVE her dress.  Black and white is definitely my thing…the only way this could have been more for me is if she’d worn purple shoes!

    • http://twitter.com/TigerLaverada TigerLaverada

The proportions on her dress look off to me. It’s too long on her.

    • http://twitter.com/TigerLaverada TigerLaverada

The proportions on her dress look off to me. It’s too long on her.

    • cowper

Can that be ME with Ewan MacGregor’s hand around my waist, please? Ooo, normally not into this “project myself with celebrity” thing but that assertive grip…it’s just a little bit more than friendly, don’t you think? Mmm…..

    • bellafigura1

They look gorgeous.  One tiny comment, she should have picked up that hem a couple inches, as shown on the model.  This length is not quite flattering.

    • tsid2012

If i were lucky enough to stand that close to Ewan McGregor i would be hanging all over him too.  Probably even more so than she is….

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=768540908 Badriya Al-Badi’a

I agree with others, the length of the dress makes it sad and almost frumpy.  I was shocked to see how much you liked the look!  (he looks great, though, no argument about that :-)

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2P2ANLRZ6YAVGONA36I2AQJYGI VicD

There seem to be only 2 kinds of Brits – them that can dress (Bowie, Colin Firth, Dame Helen, Cathy Cambridge, SWINTON, Posh & Becks, etc.), and them that can’t (the Duchess of Cornwall, Russell Brand, Helena Bonham Carter (god love ‘er), all non-Posh football WAGs and Spice Girls, etc.).  I think we know which camp these two fit in.

    • frankystein123

She has great hair, great shoes, and maybe a great dress as well, but the angles at which the pictures were taken don’t make it very flattering. He looks good, as (almost) always.
