Michelle Obama in Preen

Posted on March 20, 2012

Why, Miss Shelley! You look stunning! We almost wish you hadn’t wasted such a fabulous dress on a talk show appearance.

Michelle Obama makes an appearance on “David Letterman” in a Preen dress.

Preen Pre-Fall 2012 Collection

But we don’t blame you, dear. This is perfect for television; bold, graphic and colorful. Suits you to a t. The only thing we don’t like is the broach, which is kind of ugly on its own, but sets off our OCD placed exactly against the seam like that. This really isn’t a dress that required embellishment.

Hair and makeup? To DIE. Well done, FLOTUS.

Sorry. Ahem. She looks lovely. I didn’t notice the broach until you pointed it out. Great hair and makeup.

    • giiiirrrr

It’s almost physically painful how awesome she is.  Worth the burn for sure.

  • Mrs

I love her more than life itself but I wish her bangs weren’t covering the audience side of her face.

  • could michelle be any more perfect? ugh.

  • Christina Brennan

Looks like the top is too small… it’s bunching around the shoulders.  Otherwise, I love it.

  • NinaBoo

TLo, dears, that would be “brooch”.

  • I like the broach, a necklace might be to awkward against where the colors meet.

  •  I almost typed brotch, but that didn’t look right so I went with TLo’s spelling.

    • TropiCarla

The incorrect spelling makes Baby Jesus cry. It’s “brooch.”

  • The brooch wasn’t really needed IMO.  Love the look, and her, regardless.

  • carolynmo

I just love her! She looks fabulous.

  • Sara__B

I just wish her hair were parted on the other side so we could see her better.

  • serenitynow02

Let us broach the subject of brooches: TLo are absolutely right, this one’s really not necessary. But those colors are fab on that fab First Lady.

  • F*cking FABULOUS. What a perfect TV dress!

  • Snailstsichr

I just loved her on Letterman! And I loved the brooch. I just want to know one thing – do her legs ever end?? (Whoops – did that sound like a jealous short person??)
I’m very proud that Shelly is my first lady. You gotta love a woman who believes her dog is the best dog in the world.

    • AthenaJ

Strong, intelligent first lady with a healthy body and great style, AND loves her dog too? Michelle rocks 🙂

    • MilaXX

I like her too. She seems like a cool gal to hang with and shoot the breeze, but knows how to get down to biz when needed.

    • I was waiting for her to say there is a doggy door in the White House. That would just tickle me for some odd reason.

  • Anathema_Device

Love that dress and love it on her. Don’t like the brooch with it. Looks like she carries her pet lizard around with her.

  • CPK1

she looks insanely good! Love her! Whoever said it was a good idea to put that fug brooch there, however, should be fired.

  • kimmeister

LOVE LOVE LOVE the dress.  Can’t tell if she had the green belt on, and what color were her shoes???

Totally agree about the brooch though.  She seems to want to put one on everything, whether it works or not.

  • I love her hair. Super shiny here.

  • ampg

That brooch is the same one she wore at the State of the Union, and it looked much better there. I usually like the way she wears them, but it doesn’t work this time.

  • formerlyAnon

Huh. I think the broach works in the very long shots, but not at a distance under 10 feet. So, not for a talk show. Maybe if you’re standing on a podium.

Though maybe I’m entirely wrong. No one’s asking me for fashion tips.

    • Beardslee

I am so with you!  I loathe ‘impact on,” using adjectives as nouns, which Madison Avenue loves to do lately,  and of course affect vs effect.

  • Judy_J

I would have left the brooch off.  Otherwise, perfect.  Love that dress!

  • NurseEllen

I watched the first part of her appearance last night and was thinking of what you guys might say.  I was wondering about the necessity of the brooch myself, and I was sorry her hairstyle covered half her face, although the hair itself looked great.  She should have taken that pin and used it as a barrette to hold back her bangs!  Otherwise, perfection.

  • BrooklynBomber

She looks good, but eek, I don’t like that dress.

  • cjarellano

It actually looks better on her than on the model.

  • She is just FABULOUS!

  • nannypoo

I actually thought the pin was sort of fabulous. Unnecessary, but fabulous. She’s so smart and funny, there has never been such an amazing FLOTUS. She makes me proud.

  • rainwood1

She looks great and I like the unusual placement of the brooch.  Good for her!

  • Our local news carried a clip on the morning news & I thought she looked great EXCEPT for that broach.

  • That’s how you do colour blocking!

  • joe_tey83

That broach is a jewel leech sucking the fabulousness out of the dress.

  • Judih1

I wish she would have worn the green tights the model had on. But other than that (and the ugly brooch) it is perfect. Great color blocking!

  • alyce1213

I can’t imagine why you’d say “We almost wish you hadn’t wasted such a fabulous dress on a talk show appearance”
I kind of dig that she looks SOOOOO good with 4.3 million watching.  No?

  • MilaXX

I saw this last night and was hoping it would make it to the blog. She looked fab and Dave seemed to really like her. I actually don’t mind the brooch.

  • ballerinawithagun

Perfect (except for the brooch, of course)! She could give lessons to the female movie stars who wear their dresses too short when they know they’ll be stting down with the camera shooting them at a very unflattering (not to mention revealing) angle.

    • sagecreek

Yes. My first thought was, Gee, I hope Lea Michele sees this…

  • Rand Ortega

I’m sick of posting how gorgeous this woman is.
HA! No I’m not! This never gets tired. What style, beauty & grace. For the 1st time in my life, I’m so proud to be an American! Yeah, I SAID IT! She & her whole family is living proof of what this country is capable of achieving when it lives up to its ideals.

  • Wow! Could have done without the pin, but Wow!

  • scarlet1815

I love the dress SO MUCH. The color scheme makes me think it should be the newest version of the cadet Girl Scout uniform.

  • TheOtherChristina

    Stunning. Love this on her.

I’m with you boys on the brooch, but I’ve noticed that the inappropriately deployed brooch is something of a signature for her. I wonder if it’s meant to make her fashionable outfits look a little bit more traditionally First Lady-like.

  • I like it but I think it looks a little bit like she’s wearing a flag.

    • Lisa

You know what?  If Austin had designed THIS dress for the U.N. flag challenge, he wouldn’t have gotten himself into trouble!  🙂

  • Love, love, love the dress.  She looks perfect.

  • Cousin_Rose

The most fabulous thing she is wearing is her smile but the dress is pretty great too.  Will forgive the broach.

  • Lisa

You know what?  It looks dumpy and secretarial on the *model*, but flawless on Shelly O!  Way to go, FLOTUS! You out-modeled a model!

  • I wish her bangs were out of her face. Since her bang side of the face is facing the camera.

  • Magatha

The crisp white and those great saturated colors look so beautiful on her.

  • eight_of_nine

Haven’t we seen that brooch before?  I feel like I remember it from a black dress…

  • RWtD

I don’t like the dress sitting down. The shoulders are puffed up and the color-blocking in the arms doesn’t line up as well. This is not her fault, but the dress would be better deployed at an event where she was photographed/filmed standing. Her hairstyle looks nice, except that it covers half her face, as others have mentioned. The makeup looks good, although I can’t see the eyebrows, which is where she always gets it wrong. The one I can see looks ok. I did makeup for one of my clients who was attending the event she just had in MN, and I was telling her (my client, not Shelley O) I’d LOVE to get the chance to do Mrs. O’s makeup and just… deal with the brows.

  • OneTwoThreeFashion

Awesome! Best First Lady ever! A gracious smile, always!

  • quiltrx

She’s so lovely, and so REAL.  I’m proud she’s our FLOTUS!

  • I kind of love the brooch. Actually, I think she just looks fantastic, top to bottom.

  • ccm800

    put the hell together.

  • colleenjanel

I was hoping to be able to see the shoes. I heard on the radio this morning that just before her appearance, the heel on one of her shoes broke. She just had someone run down to Payless and pick up a pair. Why do I have a feeling that our FLOTUS even managed to make a $19.99 pair of Payless shoes look fab?

  • abigail3

Remember Laura Bush? No? THis is why! Our fabulous FLOTUS! Isn’t it wonderful to have a stylish, attractive First Lady! Four more years!!!

  • Thundar99

    Love the brooch!

  • No other First Lady or even politician would ever wear Preen. And not only get away with it, but to rock it THIS GOOD. Holy mackeral, I could not be more in awe of her.

  • She looks amazing.  I think the (old lady ugly) brooch is what identifies her as the FLOTUS and not just some other public figure.  Like Cathy, she does little things that may not comply with the TLo rules of fabulousness, but it’s those little blips that identify her as “important tied to tradition old fashioned gal” as opposed to “celebutant.”

Politics aside, the Obamas are very charming.

  • LuisaNL

she looks awesome. and I want that dress.

  • I bought a Jason Wu for Target dress and was pleasantly surprised that ShellyO has the same dress and she’s worn it for various public appearances. Naturally, I am pleased as punch.

  • I agree the dress did not need embellishment, but if you were to go with an embellishment I like the unusual shape of the brooch and putting it against the seam like that.

  • jjfg

    VERY well played!

  • tsid2012

Love, love, love this look on her.  And I am in the minority here but I think the brooch is dead perfect, placement and all.  Adds just a little sparkle and glamour for the evening.

  • Catiline

Democracy is great and all, but I’m in support of bringing back the monarchy because SHE IS MY QUEEN.

  • mjude

cant never say it enough…love her

  • sarct

The colors make me think of a 1980s Girl Scout uniform.

  • BazoDee

    Preen -the FLOTUS in Preen!!
    She looks great!
I think the brooch isn’t my favorite -but I don’t hate it. It adds something that I think was necessary -but perhaps could have been added with a different piece -a plain silver curly abstract piece to contrast the lines maybe. I feel like a silver cuff  would have been  good addition either way.
    Something like this http://www.walshbrothers.co.uk/watch_jewelry/HB3143.html

At least that’s what I would have done -but then I’m not a stylist -but I play one on the internets sometimes!

  • aimee_parrott

I agree that the brooch wasn’t really needed, but man does she look good!  I love her.

  • altalinda

Very good.  Now move that hair away from the eye that’s nearer to the camera and sit up because that diagonal white line makes me feel like you’re listing.

  • TheOriginalLulu

*gasp* I LOVE that dress. She looks great.
I’m so jealous of her ability to look amazing in every color she puts on. Not loving that brooch, though. The dress doesn’t need it. She seems to love her brooches about as much as she loves her under-boob belts.

  • LOVE the colors. I want this in my closet!

  • Stubenville

She looks great, but you boys are right; the broach does not add to the equation.
