Leighton Meester on the Set of “Gossip Girl”

Posted on March 08, 2012

What the hell. Blake got the treatment yesterday, so why shouldn’t Leighton come in for some Bitter Kitten-style bitchiness?

Although we don’t know about y’all, but we have a hard time critiquing any lady rocking a trench coat.

Oh, who are we kidding? We can criticize anyone, anywhere, at the drop of a dime. It’s our god-given talent and we’re sharing it with the world. So here’s our criticism: This look desperately needs some color and we’re not sure that dingy yellow bag is doing the job. We joke, of course; there’s nothing dingy about that bag, but the paleness of the look does tend to cast that yellow in a more jaundiced light. Some little pop of red or blue would have taken this from blandly chic to eye-catching; we’re thinking yellow as the only contrast to all that beige wasn’t the best choice. Believe it or not, we love the shoes. Of course we’d love them more in another color, but we don’t mind them paired with the coat.

IF you’re going to wear a colorless shoe, that’s the way to go.

  • I adore a nice coat, but frankly this one looks more like a hotel bathrobe.

    •  we had the same thought!

    • I completely agree! It looks so big!):

  • Needs something at the neck – not to cover the neckline of the coat – but maybe showing something underneath (in a color or even the black) to break things up up top.  Don’t love the bag for how expensive I’m sure it is.

  • No. I cannot believe that. Aren’t these shoes the very definition of hoofy?

The coat strikes me as a little robe-like, perhaps a smidge too big for her. But hey, maybe it’s comfortable that way.

    • Definitely hoofy.

    • guestela

I can’t believe it either! They seem to break so many TLo rules… and they’re just not aesthetically pleasing. At least to my eye.

    • mshesterp

Of all the shoes TLo hates, to me this style should be near the top of the list.  I cannot STAND the teardrop peeptoe thing…what is the point??  Either show the toes or don’t.  I just find them so weirdly unflattering, like there’s a hole in her shoe.  Blech.  But the color is definitely better than the plastic silly putty pumps, so there’s that.

      • Amen to that. Let the toes peep! (I’m saying this even as an anti-toe kind of person.)

    • Looks like a camel foot.

  • CQAussie

I can’t love the shoes.  Too much.  I love that coat but the shoes are all wrong with it.  She’s awash in a sea of beige blandness.  The bag is gorgeous.

  • Jessi03

Love the coat, love the hair, want to slap the shoes.

  • It’s just so blah…

  • gdougs

I loooove that coat. Very chic. But I think black shoes and a bag that didn’t look like a hotel comforter would really make this look better.

  • Judy_J

She appears to be having a bit of trouble navigating in those shoes.  I do love that trench.

  • janetjb

It’s all too pale, but otherwise very lady like.

  • That makeup is leaving me cold. I seriously didn’t recognise her face at first. Something odd going on around the eyes, maybe?

    • sweetestsith

I’ve always liked her best with smudgy brown eyeliner, top and bottom. I don’t really think this ‘eyeliner on top, naked lower lash line’ thing suits her. Her eyes look all…puffy and weird. Or maybe they were just puffy that day. Who knows. 😛

      • Ah, that’s what it is! I was wondering what was different.

I really like her with the fairly strong eye makeup too. Really works with her face, I don’t know.

  • Sobaika Mirza

She needs a necklace or something. And yes, a much brighter pop of color than that mustard-y handbag.

  • Laurie Bergman

LOOK AT MY BAG!  LOOK AT MY BAG, damn you!

  • I like this look, but even Leighton looks like she is having a hard time walking in those shoes! I think they look like a wrenched ankle or knee in the making….

  • LesYeuxHiboux

Blair has been dressed like she’s five minutes from a nervous breakdown and forgot to bathe all season. I choose to believe it is for character reasons and not just shitty styling. It’s also the only reason I can imagine that she would have thought it a good idea to kiss Dan Humphrey.  My stomach literally turned.

Also, her current storyline has her trying to keep a low profile, so the understated beige thing makes sense to me. Just not the baby-poop bag.

    • Helen C

Really?  I never liked Dan, but I find the Dan/Blair story-line has been the most enjoyable to watch, if simply for the bantering.
My ideal would be for Blair to be single, return to W and Columbia.  But her scenes with Dan were the only times she seemed to be classic Blair.  And let’s face it, Chuck/Blair is just creepy now.

    • I’m all for the Dan/Blair pairing. Their chemistry is just amazing. They pull off romantic and comedic vibes so easily…thanks to the actors of course, Leighton and Penn.

It’s the best storyline “Gossip Girl” has at the moment. Even though Ivy taking the crib of Lily and Rufus was a bit amusing. I’m just happy the show is not focused on Serena at the moment.

  • serenitynow02

Hate the shoes, hate anything with conspicuous logos (I don’t care if it’s Vuitton.) and I really like the coat. Overall, though, it’s adding up to a very bland look.

  • I have an aversion to sling backs and mules. Either you want the entire shoe or you don’t.  I never quite understood them.  The color and print on the shoe is fabulous.  The rest of the look is quite boring.

  • Jordan Brodley

So the thing about this sort of stuff is it’s not actually fashion, it’s costume (very fashionable, yes). Leighton’s character, Blair is having a really rough time of things currently and I would bet it doesn’t get better too soon. Blair is super fashionable and prim, this look follows that but without a lot of the accoutrements she usually sports. This as a costume does look a bit walk-of-shamey which is very possible for her. I wouldn’t judge it strictly on fashion.

    • maggiemaggie

I agree… wish these Gossip Girl shots were critiqued more along the lines of the Madmen fashion posts, where TLo talk about how the clothes fit the story. Plus I personally like thinking about clothes that way – even red carpet clothes – what story are they trying to tell?

I haven’t been watching Gossip Girl lately, but I imagine that this over-the-top blandness means something specific to Blair’s story.

  • Kirsten Henry

That coat is weird and boxy on her.

  • tired_mommy

Cute shoes.  Coat is just too big. Bag doesn’t look as good as it should for the $$$$$$$.

BTW, has there been a Mondo light-brite post? My computer is acting up today and I can’t search back to old posts.

  • J D

At first glance I thought that coat was just the bathrobe that she was wearing to walk between the makeup trailer and the set.  It’s a fine look, but I agree with you that it’s awfully bland.

  • TheOtherChristina

I wish she had a good three inches of skirt and a smudge of neckline peering out from under the coat. That little bit of contrast is all this look needs to become amazing. As is it looks a bit unfinished.

  • DeborahLipp

The shoes are a blight on the world.

  • mjude

i thought for sure you would hate the shoes.  sometimes you confuse this bitter kitter.

  • MsOlympia

I think her feet look freakish.

  • marilyn

Is she wearing anything under that coat?  Yikes!!  The coat, purse and shoes do not go together.

    • Serenachan

I think she’s wearing some pants (not part of the costume) and they’re bunched up so they don’t show.

  • schadenfreudelicious

a bag that expensive shouldn’t look all creased and misshapen!

    • poggi

You’re right. It does look like she used her bag to fend off a potential mugger.

      • AthenaJ

Exactly! In the promo the bag looks like warm buttah… but in the photos with Leighton it just looks crinkled and sad… 🙁

  • Louise Bryan

I’m never really a fan of ankle breakers.  This look is bland and top-heavy.

    • 3boysful

Seriously–how does one walk in those shoes??

  • Wait, wait, wait.

I do NOT see a ring on either of her hands, so does this mean the marriage does actually end?  I can’t believe she’d go without it in public, and I know the photos could be flipped, so we should look for the ring on either hand.  But I see none.

  • I love the coat. I really like the style of the shoes, but they need to be an actual color. Between the color and the 784 “LV”s, that is one hideous bag.

  • Jessica Goldstein

Those shoes look like an accident waiting to happen. Seriously.

  • nannypoo

The coat is pretty but the overall look is bad. The shoes are scary. These pictures look nothing like Leighton Meester, who I think is a lot prettier and usually even more poorly dressed than we see here.

  • Bland. Hate the shoe. I am steadfast in my hatred of the tan, platform I don’t care if it IS a slingback. And the coat is, well, meh. It’s just that compared to some of the coats we have been seeing lately I agree with Charlotte: it’s rather bathrobey. The whole outfit inspires the phrase: Lack of Imagination.

  • ASK26

    bathrobe and an ugly bag

  • rivula

*neigh* to the hoof shoes and a hay-colored bag!

  • An electric blue bag would have made this look.

  • MilaXX

Agreed, cute look but the bag needs to be a brighter or more contrasting color.

  • miwome

You said “why not” and my answer is “because there is nothing interesting about this” except the slightly intriguing possibility that her heels might snap and send her into a faceplant. (Seriously, look at those things. I swear I can see them bending.)

  • PeaceBang

It looks like she’s not wearing anything under the coat, which is weird. Those shoes terrify me. The bag is creased (!?) So, ehn. Very bland but inoffensive. On second glance, I really can’t get over the precariousness of those heels.

  • lalahartma

I like it.  Those ridiculous shoes!

  • lalahartma

Maybe she has used the bag!

  • crackineggs

  • Bozhi

I just dragged an opinion out of my husband, and he does not like the trench.  He has no opinion on the shoes or bag.

I’m trying to get him involved.  It’s not easy.

    • sleah_in_norcal

with this look, who can blame him for keeping his distance.

  • glennethph

This looks like those surprise-your-boyfriend-naked-underneath-the-trenchcoat numbers. And knowing GG, it’s most likely the case.

  • tsid2012

Girl needs to cut off half & steal half of her costars oversized scarf to finish this outfit with a blast of color.

  • MissAnnieRN

Ugh – those shoes are awful!!!!  TLo – we must be off cycle or something.  I hope it stops soon because normally we are so right on.

    • sleah_in_norcal

yes.  it’s strange the way the peephole is off center.

  • bellafigura1

That’s an old lady coat, I hate the color (which may have been helped with some better styling), the non-style, the absence of any detail, and it’s too big.  Grr.

    • sleah_in_norcal

totally agree.  i’m not much of a fan of trenchcoats in general, and this one looks like her grandma’s bathrobe.  that camel/beige color is enough to make me cry with boredom.  and it looks like she stepped on her purse and squished it.

  • TheOriginalLulu

Some color would definitely have helped.
I may be in the minority, but I hate that bag. Not a big LV fan and I hate things with monograms all over them.

  • Even some jewelry would make it look less bland.

  • marywv

Uhhh… why does her face look so different? Is it me? I didn’t even recognize her!
