Leighton Meester on the Set of “Gossip Girl”

Posted on March 21, 2012

We LOVE this look:

Leighton Meester on the set of Gossip Girl in NYC in a Peter Som dress paired with Miu Miu pumps and a Stella McCartney Bag.

Peter Som Spring 2012 Collection

Miu Miu Camel Patent Mary Jane Platform Loafer Pumps

It’s a bit on the Ladies Who Lunch side of things and thus, probably just a little mature for the average gal her age, but it’s ridiculously cute. A little too matchy for real life, but perfect for the screen. The coat is fabulous and the dress looks so much better without the black lace on the runway version. A perfect springtime look.

  • “A little too matchy for real life,”

Not if you live in The South.

    • JosephLamour

Not for the upper east side either. Or Blair, who’s definition of style is “Same shade of ______.”

    • serenitynow02

For the life of me, I will never understand the matchy phobia. Sometimes, I like things that match.

      • girliecue

I blame Michael Kors. He used to spit “matchy match” out of a very sour puss early on in PR and the world has been terrified of it since. Sometimes it just looks best when things match. I find it far more egregious to throw in a color just to avoid matchy match.

        • MilaXX

I’m not a fan of being super matched but I like this outfit. I’m not a fan of the pearls, and the shoes/bag aren’t the same color so they work for me.

I just think it looks kind of…Barbie doll and her set of accessories. Just my opinion, of course! I like things to go together, just not to look like they came shrink-wrapped together. 😉

      • I know right, I have never figured out how to mis-match correctly.

  • Pants_are_a_must

Ah, so even Gossip Girl is celebrating the return of Mad Men, I see.

    • Thank you. I can see Francine in this.

  • I know you guys love the just above the knee cut but I just think sometimes it’s not as flattering as right AT the knee. This is one of those occasions.

  • nannypoo

Platform Mary Janes and old lady hair? Why, oh why?

  • RebeccaKW

I kinda like the runway version.  I think it takes it from being too precious.  I do like the dress and the coat, but together with the pearls it’s a bit Easter Sunday.

    I LOVE the shoes.

    • I hate the pearls. Everything else is really fab, though. And I’m dying over the shoes. I’ve finally accepted that I can’t wear heels anymore. Those shoes are making me re-think my decision.

  • Isana Leshchinskaya

oh man i kinda want you guys to do a gg fashion retrospective…

    • dress_up_doll

That would be fun! I’d love to see how their fashion has evolved over the years from their high school looks to present day. I’d hope they would throw in Lily as well.

  • sharialbert

I think the lace kept it young, although it def looks cleaner without.

    • brokephilosopher

agreed–it looks sort of tacked on in the runway version.  I wonder if it wouldn’t look best if the lace were done a little differently, maybe starting lower and ending higher so it didn’t overlap with the pattern at all?

  • Laurie Bergman

I love EVERYTHING except the shoes, which to me have a plasticky Barbie shoe vibe going on.

  • TieDye64

Oh, how I covet that coat.

    • Get rid of the beads and she gets 15 years younger.

Sorry, that wasn’t supposed to be a reply but a new entry.

      • TieDye64

Yes, I was thinking the same thing.

        No problem. 🙂

        • ballerinawithagun

Yes, lose the pearls and wear more of a belt.

  • Sara__B

The three-strand gold beads and hair style are what make the look too matronly. Even so, it’s a sweet springtime look, especially welcome with the cold, relentless rain pouring down here.

  • finnishmaria

Blair is like a Young Lady Who Lunches, so it’s perfect!

    •  Yeah. I think TLo don’t watch the show, because if you do, you realize that this is a perfectly in-character outfit for Blair at this point in the series.

    • Libby Rhoman

That was my immediate thought too.  She’s always been a  Junior League-er in training.

      • Libby Rhoman

Also, I think she looks adorable.

  • More than anything, it helps me understand what a good stylist can really do — pull together these pieces from various collections (and modify them where necessary) to create a unified look without it being all from one collection, and the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

  • Monica Day

Seriously? She looks like a substitute teacher who shops at TJ Maxx. First off, the coat; the faded mustard color, aggressively matte material and the overly generous cut are hideous. That collar is huge. Is it a housecoat, a lab coat or a duster?  Second, the dress; without the black lace overlay, it looks both generic and matronly.

I have no words for the plastic beads.

    •  What kind of substitute teacher does your school get?  Lucky school.

      • Monica Day

Funny you should ask – in 1989 I was in junior high and I had a social studies teacher who dressed just like this – except for the shoes 😉

  • I always thought Blair had similar taste in fashion as Charlotte York (Sex and the City).  Glad to see matchy-matchy preppy chic Blair back!!  ANd she’s smiling!

  • serenitynow02

It is a little mature for her, but perfect for me. I’ll let her keep the shoes, I’ll take the rest.

    • holdmewhileimnaked

      i’ll take the shoes.
      i like the purse too.

  • BrightsideSusan

In real life we can’t afford to have the perect mixed sets of bags and shoes all the  time so matching should be ok on those occasions.  Love this look.  Hated that black lace on the runway version.

  • butterflysunita

I love it too.  It’s a great look for the early spring we’re having in NYC too–lovely flowered dress with a light coat since it’s still cool in the morning and evening.

  • SapphoPoet

  • another_laura

J’ADORE with about half an inch off that platform.

  • berkeleygirl

Blake Lively can only dream about looking this good…

  • CatherineRhodes

Letting down her hair and taking off the necklace would take this look out of the “Ladies Who Lunch” category.

    • TheOtherChristina

      Agreed. The rest is fabulous.

  • CarolinLA

    Absolutely ADORE this look!

  • Susan Crawford

I think she looks smashing! My only quibble would be those Barbara Bush-like triple=strand beads. They could be ditched and the whole outfit would look SO much more youthful.

The whole “matchy-matchy” question is interesting. I always enjoy seeing the symmetry of a good match-up. True, it is a bit League of Women Voters / Junior League, but hey – some of my favorite women have been LWV/JL types! In this case, the shoes and bag have a nearly identical color, and against the yellow and the print, it really works beautifully. The print has a LOT of color, so NOT going matchy could look a bit clownish and random.

Miss Meester is truly, truly a beautiful young woman who can rock some serious style.

  • Shoelover1512

    LOVE LOVE LOVE the shoes!

    • 3boysful

That’s SO funny–I just scrolled down thinking my takeaway was that the shoes are hiddy!  So, you, Shoelover, can have my pair!

  • glennethph

It’s perfect for Blair — who has always had a fashion sense of someone decades older.

  • Somebody popped the head off of Grandma Barbie and replaced it with Skipper’s!

  • Entirely adorable (especially the shoes) but those beads – so mumsy.

  • librarygrrl64

So fresh and feminine! If the shoes had been a neutral (light brown, maybe?), I would wear the hell out of this, head-to-toe. Yay, spring!

  • formerlyAnon

The coat makes the look, IMO. And the bag does more for it than the shoes. One of these three elements has to go for those shoes to please me: “Platform Loafer Pump.”  I don’t know that it matters, much, which.

  • Verascity

I love it in theory but styled that way, it’s super aging on her.

  • RzYoung

Gorgeous, I could live without the pearls though…and I couldn’t walk in those shoes. I love that coat. Oh i love yellow

  • Oh TLo, you really should watch this show so you would understand why they dress her like this.  This outfit is completely Blair Waldorf, she dressed like this even in high school, as she has always dressed older than her age.  I love it.

  • jw_ny

Pearls and hair are way too mature for her age.   The dress, coat, shoes are all cute…together and in combo with the pearls and hair, it’s ‘Easter Sunday Mass’…too matchy matchy.  I really hate the purse…especially the chain.

  • Eunice on Mama’s Family, v. 2.0.

    Nuh-uh. Not for me.
Love the coat. Would be great with jeans and a t and maybe the necklace, but as is it looks like she’s heading to a February wedding in Texas, as the Yankee girl trying to fit in but failing because her hair’s not big enough.

    • jw_ny

LOL!  I didn’t see Eunice until now…but YES!  Thanks for my 1st chuckle of the day. XD

  • laescupidera

We bitter kittens should start a petition for T-Lo to watch this show (for the fashion, if no other reason). You’ll have a whole new take on Leighton M. She always looks stunning as Blair.

    • Tell me where to sign!  It’s more because they always ding Blair for her mature look–when in fact that is the point.  If they watched they would say “This is a full fledged Blair WERQ”  And I have a feeling they  would love Blair Waldorf.  She is the only reason I truly love that show.

      •  Actually, we didn’t ding her for looking mature at all. We acknowledged that it was perfect for the screen, but would look mature on the average gal her age in the real world.

      • Yes, exactly as TLo said, they never said that. Read a little more closely.

  • Judy_J

Love it , but without the necklace and purse.

  • sagecreek

  • jenno1013

Patent Mary Jane Platform Loafer Pumps….is like four different shoes.

    • formerlyAnon

And at least one too many, IMO.

  • TheOriginalLulu

Gorgeous. I’m insanely jealous of anyone who can wear yellow without looking sickly.

  • Looks like an Easter going-to-church outfit from 1967, minus the hiddy shoes.  All she needs is a chapeau to top it off.

  • Blair Waldorf…how I love thee.

  • marywv

DE-spise those shoes! When did she age 20 years and turn into a matriarch. Girl is looking practically elderly – and it’s not just the clothes!

  • bellafigura1

Spare me the triple strand.  So Barbara Bush.

  • maggiemaybe

I love those shoes so much I’m getting kinda emotional about it…
