Leighton Meester for Marie Claire

Posted on March 19, 2012

It’s funny. The writeup for this editorial is all about how it’s “ultra feminine,” which isn’t how we saw it at all when we first looked at the pics.

Vionnet Spring 2012 Collection

Which isn’t to say there’s anything UNfeminine about any of these pictures, but when we looked at them, the first word that came to mind was “edgy.” We mean that in the sense that they dolled her up in some very pretty, yet unconventional dresses; the kind of dresses we like to characterize as “tough to pull off.” Granted, a lot of the pictures are closeups, so you can’t really see much of the clothes except the parts near her face, but she’s working the hell out of that Theory gown and we would have considered that beyond her somewhat limited style capabilities.

Still, she looks great throughout and all credit to Marie Claire for giving us some interesting dresses to look at.

she looks rather “ultra stoned” to me……

    • Sobaika Mirza

I think she was shooting was a dreamy, far away look in her eyes. She failed.

      • schadenfreudelicious

agreed, she looks great in the clothes, just a bit “high” in the eyes :)

      • poggi

Yes, so many actresses try to do this deep, dreamy look and they end up appearing confused.  I am not sure the photographer was going for perplexed or befuddled.

    • Little_Olive

I was going for constipated (esp regarding the last picture), but that’s about right.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HREPOWNBVUBRIVPQCF3ST2IKDM Euphory

Really?  I thought she looks sad and melancholy.  Not stoned.  Funny how people see the very same pictures.

      • Helen C

Yeah, not seeing “stoned” or “vacant” at all, unless they mean sad.

  • http://twitter.com/bredalot Bridget Smith

I love that D&G dress on her. It’s a good blend of the feminine that she wears so easily and the rocker-chick she was trying so hard (and so often failing) to pull off. It looks great.

  • shirab

In that last one she looks like Keira Knightley with a few much-needed pounds. But why did they give her eye bags?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Margaret-Carlson-Nikoleit/100002490979930 Margaret Carlson Nikoleit

Yes, those eye bags actually distracted me from the clothes! Can’t believe a girl this young could look this world-weary from the weight of those bags.

    • Basil Von Broccoli

I thought she looked a bit like a mix of Rose Byrne and Penelope Cruz, not that that’s in any way a bad thing.

  • guestela

Maybe it’s just me, but I think the Theory dress looks terrible. So drab and misshapen. Doesn’t do her any favors, or she it.

    • boweryboy

      Nope, not just you.

    • Lizzyisi

I also thought she looked terrible in the Theory dress–it looks like ill-fitting, poorly-conceived hardshell plastic, and she looks completely dead-eyed and entirely divorced from her surroundings.

The other shots are sort of pretty and boring.

To me it looks like the Theory dress is wearing her and she is too stoned to escape its clutches.

To me it looks like the Theory dress is wearing her and she is too stoned to escape its clutches.

I’d like to see the Theory Dress on Miss Havisham.

I think the Theory dress is the same one Piper Perabo wore to some awards show (Golden Globes, maybe? I’m pretty sure I remember TLo covering it). It really didn’t work on her either. I think the best that can be said for this gown is that it is “interesting.”

    • Adriana_Paula

As someone on this blog once said about a different garment, this dress looks like the muslin for a better dress.

  • jw_ny

Leighton looks beautiful in these shots…except the makeup under her eyes looks like bags.

The Theysken’s Theory dress looks great and dramatic in the photo shoot..that’s where it should stay!   Hideous and drab on the model.  Some dresses are not meant to be worn in public.

Anyone else see an uncanny resemblance to Penelope Cruz?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=720742723 Sarah Winningham

Poor Piper Perabo, remember how dumb she looked in that Theory dress? http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/2012/01/golden-globe-awards-red-carpet-part-1.html

  • holdmewhileimnaked

she looks great in the theyskens dress. though while i am, oddly, glad they put her in a bra she, & it, might probably have been better served in some sort of slip or lining or camisole or other less breaky-uppy type thing. she looks great in all of this, actually. then again, i am really sick today & she has always been the one i liked best of her & her compatriots so that may be befogging my judgment. then again, no.

  • Kimbolina

I kind of hate the Theory dress, both on her and on the model.

I think she kind of looks like Penelope Cruz in some of these pictures, especially in the black and white shot.

    • LJCdoc

I was just gonna say this. Really ,really looks like Penelope Cruz.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/C5DHGDPX5J7BENE4HI6TBQUZHM Kathryn

I like everything but the cover photo.  That is one awkward, uncomfortable, and tense facial expression.

  • http://twitter.com/arodenha Alli

Did she do something to her face? She’s looked off in the last few pics I’ve seen of her….

    Love that Theory gown.

  • NCDFan

I think these dresses look kinda of awful on the models. The only reason they look good in the shoot is because of her face.

  • unbornfawn

Really like the Black and White photo.

  • ccm800

That theory dress looks like skin

    • Adriana_Paula

So there’s lotion in the basket?

  • kimmeister

I never noticed what great cheekbones she has until now.

  • Elaine Lang

Every time I see a close up of her, I get distracted by her perfect skin.   Girl must have a cosmetics endorsement by now, right?

  • http://profiles.google.com/jgonz85 Jasmine Gonzalez

She looks like a young Susan Sarandon in some of these photos.

  • marilyn

The yellow dress looks like a BAD home sewing project.   Pulling it open for underboob cleavage does not help.  It is a dog of a dress.  The D&G dress is great, and looks great on her.  It is very flattering.  The Theory dress reminds me of a costume, more than a ball gown.  It is intended to be a nude color, which makes it look icky on the model.  When LM wears it in darker light, it looks better, but it is long sleeved, and very severely plain.  What look were they going for here?  Does she need one of those cone shaped princess hats with a scarf coming out of the end?  .   The Vionnet dress is spectacular, and it is a shame the more of it is not shown in the LM picture.  Over all, LM looks good, but in spite of some of the clothes.

  • R. L.

I hate the yellow dress.  She’s working that Theysken Theory dress for sure.  The D&G is great.  The Vionnet is not my cup of tea at all as it looks like somebody put a dress over a separate and unrelated dress.

  • RedRaven617

The Theory gown is just weird looking to me. Without a bra it would be crass, with the bra it just looks weird.

  • Susan Crawford

Never really realized it until now, but this is a seriously beautiful young woman. GORGEOUS complexion, beautiful bone structure, and a features I would kill for. Wow.

    • Lisa

You know, I noticed that before I even noticed the clothes – she really is gorgeous!  She looks like a perfect cross between Winona Ryder and Susan Sarandon.

  • MilaXX

I saw the magazine in stores over the weekend and thought she looked really pretty on the cover. The Theory dress is pretty but I wish they would have lined the top rather than have the bra show through. The Vionnet is an interesting dress. I’d love to see if a non model could actually pull that off.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JSGAZPEESHQT47ATH55GNOHHBY Erin

I don’t usually like bangs, but hers look great.  She looks mature and sexy, and as if she’s poised to break out of the gaggle of fashion-y starlets and become an actual star.

  • giiiirrrr

Girl, those are not your bangs.  Too wispy, makes her look like she has less hair than she has.  Otherwise, well done.

  • aristida_girl

I love her hair color, it makes me want to try brunette

  • berkeleygirl

    She’s never looked better.

  • http://onionjam.tumblr.com SkipperJane

Just think of it in the sense that “ultra-feminine” in this instance means “but for my bra you could see my nipples.”

  • http://promiscuouslola.blogspot.com/ Cate

this is very “meh” to me. I love Leighton and everything, but I’m only mildly impressed.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61101261 Becca Robson

She looks like a cross between Penelope Cruz and Lea Michele…

  • http://twitter.com/foodycatAlicia foodycatAlicia

Do you think they had a different model lined up for this editorial? I am not seeing any of these as particularly flattering for her.

  • http://twitter.com/Highlandista Highland Fashionista

Agreed…she’s not quite pulling it off. As you say, these dresses are hard to pull off at baseline. As is the whole uber-feminine trend this spring (like the Louis Vuitton candy pastels….too sweet for a lot of us). I fault the stylist. None of these dresses are in a palette or cut that really enhance her beauty.

  • VicksieDo

The conventional bra showing in the Theory dress, is not good…

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Gorgeous cover.  The rest is meh.

  • Sweetvegan

The Theory gown is the one I like the least. When I saw the photo in the magazine, I thought it was so unflattering. The hem is about 12 inches too long and the sleeves are slightly bunched up and wrinkled, but they might have done that intentionally so that the sleeves wouldn’t look too long.

  • gubblebumm

    bores me to tears
